"Uncle P said once you hit level seven, your death will be painful, dramatic, or very boring."

Tarquin isn't doing it because he likes it.
Tarquin is doing it because it has a great retirement plan.

Let's say you're a good to neutral adventurer. What typcial ends your adventuring carrer?

1) You die adventuring. Very common.

2) You start a family or organization. This tends to root you into one place. You die of old age or by a wandering evil who needs his stats padded. Your magic items are handed down until a family member takes up adventuring or an adventurer needs a quest reward.

3) You start a family or organization. Your spouse, offspring, employees, or apprentices either turn on you or are forced to see you killed in front of them.

and a million other retired adventurer tropes. The common factor of most of them (if you don't become the Usher of the Golden Age) is that you die is a dramatic way or you grow into an old nobody.

Tarquin said "screw that" and took the way he was guaranteed a great life. But that way is through evil.
The BBEG path will cause too much stress dealing with the good guys, so he's not taking that.
The Evil Monster path has a great plan but it's very short.

So he told his allies the path to a long fulfilling life with plenty of fun and power without the fear of a random beatdown.

Yeah, Tarquin is great. Really fantastic.
This is quickly beccoming my favourite story arc ever, and it's mostly because of him.
