So, I've got some interesting ideas for trolls, but I've run into a bit of a stumbling block. I need two words to describe bigger, nastier versions of trolls. I want it to be a word of its own, not just 'dire' trolls or whatever. I had the idea for Trollock, but my brother pointed out that's apparently taken. I'd like the words to involve 'troll' somehow, but that's not priority one. So, a little help, playground?

You could just drop the "troll" nomenclature from the name and call them "Savagespawn" or "Green renders" (Not related to Gray renders).

Megalotroll exists in Ultimate Monsters Vol 1 or 2, published by Mongoose.

It's huge, has twice the regenerative power, and is overall pretty nasty.

Let's go with Tolkien for this one. Torog (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/t/torog.html) is the Sindarin name for a troll. The Olog-hai (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/o/ologhai.html) were the greater trolls used by Sauron during the War of the Ring, commonly called war-trolls.

That would probably be the bardic troll mentioned above.

This troll has flaming red hair and is dressed in a khaki trenchcoat. It stops short of charging you, and instead claps its hands and begins a strange, shuffling dance.

Only in the original language. There's no particular reason that it needs to be the case for the imaginary language you're importing it into to use as a new classification of creature.

Is it bad that I've heard this song before, several times, and knew what it was without clicking? One of my friends has the weirdest taste in music.

Theres an old british tale of a troll so large his name was a portmanteau of the two largest trolls before him who became him? Gargantua iirc.

More seriously, you could name them after the region they come from, to borrow another Tolkien mainstay. (i.e. Northerlings are people from the north, Azurlings are from Azure City, Cailians are from Cairo, and so on.)

Just out of curiosity, what are your ideas for trolls? I ran a heavily fey and fairy-tale related campaign a while back, and I wound up making trolls in my setting into fey...of the "live under bridges and terrorize passers-by" variety.

You'll all get to see what comes of this. I just want to finish writing up the fluff for the last three varieties of troll before I post this into the homebrew section. I've already decided what the two troll-names are, I'm just enjoying watching what people keep coming up with.

You know something? It's really much more efficient if you don't name them. Much scarier. It's one thing to be up against a strong and fierce monster, but to then realise that no one has seen them enough to bother to name them (or, in this case, returned to name them)... that can be quite unsettling.

However, if anything, I'd advice a name that doesn't use the word "troll". that will just kill all the excitement; players will know "they are beefed up trolls, okay" and then they can be beaten by stat twisting. If you name them something obscure, then there's more uncertainty.

I second the no-name advice. Just make them bigger trolls and let your players figure out a name for them. This name will be more imposing than any name you come up with.

(Hint, if they're average D&D players the name will probably be Dire Troll)

The prefix ur- denotes something ancient or primevieal, which fits in with the idea in many fantasy worlds that older things are bigger, badder and meaner.

Hah, guess no one liked my funny idea of high trolls

but also, what about something that moves on four legs (quadroped)? Trolls seem very...animalistic, I've always been surprised that most fantasy writers put them as bipedal. Just a note...

Perhaps you could use "Trollop?" I remember in one fairy tale the main character had to defeat an evil troll, and then she had her beloved prince stolen by the Troll's daughter, who was called "The Trollop."
