Random Banter

Ladies and Gentlemen, I bid you welcome to this most glorious of threads, Random Banter! Do kindly read the rules, for the preservation of all that is good in those posts which are yet to come is of a supreme, if understated importance...
Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. Whenever the word "banter" is uttered, posters are to respond with "EXCELSIOR!" in order to win Fifty-Eyed Fred Awesome Points.

I think I ruined the new Random Banter. Oh well, let the nerds REJOICE!

The Rules To prevent this thread from going down in a flaming ball of death, you'd better follow these.

Gentlemen, shall we begin bantering in a random manner?

The Rules To prevent this thread from collapsing due to structural problems, follow them.

Rhythm & Blues 151?

Why don't we discuss who gets the next thread? That's how it used to be done at least. Also I thought we waited until we were close to post 1500.

Nope, thread goes to whoever first calls dibs on page 50 (For people who don't change the posts per page).
In this case, Fred was effectively the first to call dibs by announcing his thread. So his is the officially sanctioned RB.

I'll let Fred have it if I get #152 by default. Hehehe.

Doesn't work that way. Dibs must be called on page 50 of the previous thread to the one you are claiming. Rigid adherence to rules aside, what would we do if you weren't online when this thread reached page 50?

You've been a member for 4 months. I assure you, this has happened before.

It's fine switching off, with conversations about it. This tends to happen often when new posters get excited about the idea of having their own RB and just decide to make it without talking about it.

Call it on page 50. Make sure people know. It's not a race, it's a thread.

There's rules, btw. Read them. It's 50 threads between for elegibility. (Fred's new rule is not an offical rule. =P)

No. That was something mentioned as a problem the last time this happened (Creation of RB #115). We don't discuss who gets the new thread, because it tends to stop other conversations and is nigh-on spam.

Except it wasn't fun, there's a reason things were set out this way. And it's not "when it hits page 50". You have posts 1470-1500 to decide who gets it. And someone has to claim it in the old thread, make the new one, link it in the old thread, and get the old thread closed.

This, basically. Though, note, it can be 'when it hits page 50'. But someone calls dibs on page 50, then conversation continues in the old thread until the new one exists.

Looking at the chart I'm on the line between geek and nerd. I'm socially inept, people iust don't realise it.

It's gone further for me. At the after-show party for Pinafore, I was talking to Josephine, mentioned at some point that I was socially inept, and she absolutely refused to let it stand.

Hurrah! I've nearly dried all my clothes. Only one top, two pairs of trousers and a towel to go.

Yeah, well, I had the whole thing copied into word a whle before I posted to be sure I'd get this one. Clearly it didn't work.

Did you iust copy straight from looking at the post? Because that would get you the text, but not the formatting (e.g. links). You have to actually quote the post to get all the code.

I also think that anyone who has made a R&B shouldn't be allowed to make a new one.

The rule is they can't make another until it's been at least 50 threads since their last.
Edit: ninia'd, and also:

That said, I don't think anyone has had more than one RB.

Zeb has, InaVegt has, and possibly someone else.

I was wondering about that diagram and I've concluded that I'm kind of debatable on all three. Intelligence - I have it in exams, but I'm probably patently useless in the actual world, short of occasional moments of clarity. Obsession? I'm a bit obsessive with my music at the moment. I go through phases of obsession - quite mild obsession, though. I prefer to have a range of interests, which is why I still like reading, videogames (to an extent), stuff like that. And social ineptitude? Aside from being really bad at understanding what people are saying and coming out with non-sequiturs every once in a while (they make sense to me :smallannoyed:), not so much. Huh. Kind of a dweeb then? An indecisive dweeb?

LESS WORRY. That was the primary goal, because I had no idea what to get people.
I'm still kinda half-smiling even though we went separate ways an hour and a half ago.

I wouldn't consider you socially inept myself, then again, I met you on a forum that was created to discuss a stick figure DnD parody comic.
But you know, erudition, good conversation, wit, charm and whimsy; even in a 'sane' environment I'd consider you socially ept.

Well, it's partly a comfort thing. The more comfortable I am, the more socially ept I become. But around people I don't know at all, or not very well, I'm still liable to reatreat into my shell and not contribute anything to teh conversation.
But, yeah, you have a point. The thing is I'd been thinking I was socially inept for years, during which I had gradually become less socially inept, and I didn't realise that it might not be applicable any more.

And now, without any lyrics, let's see how far I can go . . .

What's this? What's this?
There's colour everywhere
What's this?
There's white things in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my eyes
I must be dreaming
Wake up Iack,
This isn't fair!

What's this? WHat's this?
There's something very wrong
There's people singing songs
What's this?
The streets are lined with lights
Everybody seems so happy
Have I possibly gone daffy

WHat's this?

There's frost in every window
And oh I can't believe my eyes
And in my bones I feel
The warmth that's coming from inside

Oh look, What's this?

They're hanging mistletoe
They kiss?
Why that looks so unique
Inspired!
They're gathering around it
Hearing stories, roasting chestnuts on a fire

What's this?

In here
They've got a little tree
How queer
And who would ever think
- And why -
That covering it wiht tiny little things
They've got electric lights on strings
ANd there's a smile on everyone
Now correct me if I'm wrong
This looks like fun, this looks like fun
Oh, cOuld it be I've got my wish?

What's this?

Oh my, what now?
The children are asleep
But look, there's nothing underneath
No ghouls
No witches here to scream and scare them
Or ensnare them
Only cosy little things
Secure inside their dreamland

What's this?

The monsters are all missing
And the nightmares can't be found
And in their place there seems
To be good feeling all around
Instead of screams I swear
I can hear music in the air
The smell of cakes and pies
Are absolutely everywhere

The sights!
The sounds!

Tehy're everywhere and all
Around!
I've never felt so good
Before!
This empty place inside of me
Is filling up
I simply cannot get enough
I want it!
Oh I want it!
I want it for my own
I've got to know
I've got to know
WHat is this plce that I have found

What. Is. This?!

*donk*

Christmas Town?
Hnnmmmm . . .

Still got it.

Oh yes.
Nothing like 'misinterpreted' tragic anti-heroic portrayals of the Devil or the gorgeous verse, the epic battle in Heaven and all the angels walking around. Plus it's Bible fanfiction.
Why would you automatically assume Paradise Lost is male?
I mean, yes, I definitely agree with you there, but which books would be female?
I feel like La Morte d'Arthur should be female.

Can the goo left over from brewing be used in food?

Yep. Some recipes specifically call for beery yeast type stuff. You can even buy a pseudo-version in supermarkets.

I would assume so because it was written by a man and is highly male-dominated, plus it's about fairly stereotypically masculine things - big battles, and being all competitive about everything.

However, I did open my window a second ago to see if it was snowing again, there's about a sixth of an inch of ice on my windowsill.

Sky's gone a bit more overcast again now. We may get a bit more snow.

I love that we're talking about this.
What would be the sexiest book then?

Well, it's all subiective. Different people find different things sexy, with books as well as with people.
It's debatable to what extent actual sexual content within a book would increase its sex appeal. It probably would, but it's certainly not the only factor.
Off the top of my head, I'm inclined to say American Gods would be the sexiest book.

You didn't already know he was a he? :smallconfused: I mean, we've kinda been referring to Ol' Scratch with masculine pronouns for... quite a while...
And really, would anyone else do justice to it?

I don't really get you. You seem to be missing the point of an anthropomorphic personification.

Kama Sutra?

I initially thought this was iust a really odd non sequitur.

Kama Sutra?

Too obvious.

I would assume so because it was written by a man and is highly male-dominated, plus it's about fairly stereotypically masculine things - big battles, and being all competitive about everything.

Probably, but then again, I consider The Picture of Dorian Grey to be female, and that was written by Oscar Wilde and contains fairly stereotypically masculine things.
And I find Mary Barton to be male even though it was written by a woman and had a female main lead.

But but but but but. What are your typical hogswatch/christmas/decemberween presents? I'm guessing books.

Books and earrings, yes.

Sky's gone a bit more overcast again now. We may get a bit more snow.

The fun thing is that to most other countries, the snow we got is pitiful, so they're reading us marvelling over our several inches of snow and unusual cold snap while smirking condescendingly.

To be fair though, those countries get snow every year and are thus prepared. We don't usually, so it's novel and pretty (and also something we just have no plans for). I mean, if you include the snow we got in Jan, I've seen more snow this year than in the rest of my life put together. The last time I remember snow of more than inch is when I was about four. Two decades of very little snow will lull a country into thinking that planning for snow is a bit of a waste of money.

Glarb. D; Too much topics!

@Anthropomorphic Books:

Female Book? Hmmm...Anything by Jane Austin, obviously. :smalltongue: But that's even more obvious.

I also think biographies, both auto and non-auto, would be female. Something about discussing the important aspects of a person's life in reflection seems decidedly feminine to me.

And, for one reason or another, I think that the entire "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, plus The Hobbit, are female. The Hobbit is far more feminine in that regard. Just...something about his writing style seems feminine to me.

If who starts RB has become some kind of status symbol that people fight over, then we may have to find a way to undo that.

I'm not sure what that'd be but I suspect it would be unpopular. Well, since you did ask...

By using a very, very greal deal of force backed by a considerable amount of bad-tempered, venomous, vindictive pique...

Hit something hard enough, it's like stabbing a straw through a potato.

(It helps that the SK-series Snake launchers I prefer are large and heavy enough to beat a rhino to death with, being somewhere in the region of twice the size of a bazooka... Not many portable guided missile launchers are big enough to take out unarmoured vehicles without having to fire at them...)

That defeats the object of the exercise.

(It's quite well-known experiment, actually. Get a straight straw, put your thumb over the end or pinch it, and then stab it with enough force and it'll go into the potato. A google of "straw" "potato" and "through" turned up several links, including a video or two, if you're interested.)
