View Full Version : Help loopy get a trip to America! (Now with update!)

Hey all! My work, an Australian ISP, is running a 'Top Geek' competition. I've decided to enter, as the top prize is a trip to PAX in the USA.

You may remember that I was planning a trip to Europe. Well... Um. Kinda broke my finger... Then found a tumor in my finger. May no longer actually be able to afford to go. :smallsigh:

So this is my fallback, haha. If you would like to 'vote' for me, just follow this link (http://www.topgeek.iinet.net.au/entry/view/26/?v=50&cmpid=00007-grpdiv_iires-tgty_psmid&2473SPEM).

Much appreciated all. (And really hope this isn't against forum rules)

EDIT: Hey guys, they have just set up a leaderboard, and our very favorite loopy is currently coming fourfifth! If you haven't voted for me already, please do so! (And if you have, voting for me on a different computer always works!

If it is or if it isn't, I still voted for you

Of course... then I felt compelled to go through the list and I also voted for the other person in there who I know :smalltongue:

Off the top of my head I know three people who work there and two (including my husband) who used to :smalltongue: ... but thank you, now I know what the topic of conversation at home group will be tonight

On the fact of this competition.

Friend who still works for the borg will come to home group and tell us all about it - probably also mention the other friend who I already saw has entered. Then I will nonchalantly comment that I already knew about it :smalltongue:

I forgot to comment on your picture. If creepy and disturbing was the look you were going for, you succeeded. Admirably.

PAX...is in Seattle. If you win, and you come to Seattle, we should totally like, hang out and drink a beer or 5. That would be fun. And stuff.

Dude, I was downtown last summer when PAX was going on. It was pretty awesome. All the geeks out in costume walking up and down Pike Street. One guy even had like, full roman bronze plate on. It was pretty sweet. Also, there was a giant beholder chillin outside of the convention center that looked like it was trying to direct traffic with its eye rays.

They should be careful, their site is massively game-able, they use a mechanism that is really too simple to detect if you've already voted. I hope they do result filtering, otherwise the ballot box is going to get stuffed by someone with a clue... (and by stuffed I mean ~1'000+ votes per second...)

I voted for you loopy.

But If I compare you to the girl "Tahlia C" next to you in the featured list (congrats on being in there btw), she's filled in her websites, twitter, flicker and other stuff. If you can still adjust your info, maybe you could show other geeky stuff in a flicker account, or do a geeky one-twit show to boost your support and your geek cred.

I'm only in featured thanks to you guys.

Yeah, my only problem is... Well, I don't have a website at the moment, I don't really do photography (due to not owning a camera), so I don't really need a flickr. Oh, and every time you make an alteration they take your profile down while they review it, and I don't want to risk being taken out of featured. :smallwink:

What I find bizarre is that my success thusfar is due, in near equal parts, to votes from my geeky mates (GitP represent!) and the various people I know from my other life as a music festival/rave promoter.

If hes a CEO of a large ISP, he should be able to afford his own dang ticket and badge for PAX. I say you guilt trip him into giving you his ticket if he wins, since it was your idea to sign him up.

The trick is to just send the direct link and have people vote on it, and then have them not look at the rest of the contestants.

I was tempted to vote for the Harley Quinn and the girl who were basically topless in the pic, with only a PS3 controller covering her (.)(.).
Didn't vote for them, though, as that'd hurt loopy's chances.

Truer words have never been said.
Well, to be honest, they probably have, but not in this specific context.
At least not in this thread. Definitely not on this page of the thread.

Loopy, I could give you a plug to a couple female friends of mine. You may or may not owe them some carnal favors when you get to Seattle in return for votes though.

...Well, I could add them to the list? :smalltongue:

Voted for you, but this is going to be tough as there are some hot babes ahead of you. :smalltongue:

Which is exactly why we should help Loopy win!

Girls who like to use the stereotype of geeks against them to get free stuff, that they may not appreciate.

Yeah, I know, I'm a beautiful female geek who gets annoyed by the whole "You can't be a real gamer, just because you're a girl!" because I just want to settle down and roll some dice with the boys, and not have to whip out my gamer cred every time I meet new geeks.

So, I'm a hypocrite... but still those girls don't look like they would appreciate a geek convention, and I'd rather it go to someone who would, Loopy especially so.

I think one of the was something of a expert on Harley Quinn, so she might enjoy comic con or the like. The other ones who were just flashing cleavage for votes? Really? All that proves is you're female (usually :smalltongue:) not that you're a geek.

Seems as if loopy's actually DROPPED two spots since this last push to get votes for him.

Not good at all.

I hadn't looked at the leader board when I made my post. Most of the women on the leaderboard look like they have a good chance of being geek core.

When I flipped through the competition when loopy first posted this, I saw many women that looked like cam whores and posted no geek interests at all.

But then again, I might be a geek snob. SXSW is an event I would love to go to... but liking Southby style music makes me a hipster douche-bag, not a geek.

Not having time to eat at Gen Con cause I'm too busy gaming makes me a geek.

Voted. For Awesomeness, and because I feel sad that I lost the link the original post containing your quote in my sig. :/

Okay, so voting has officially closed, and apparently I'm in the running for the top 15 places (which are picked by judges, not votes).

Pretty excited, so wish me luck.

And I helped! <3

If you win, I might just have to get a PAX badge myself. I ended up walking around downtown when PAX was going on last year, and it was hillarious to see all the geeks roving around in hordes. I just might have to join them!
