Obligatory "What Edition/Game?" Post :smalltongue:

EDIT: There was never a "basic gemstone" pricing chart. They were usually worth somewhere between 50-100 GP apiece with some at 500 GP or 1000 GP.

AD&D had a table which linked various types of precious and semi-precious stones to certain ranges of GP value. AFAIK none of the WotC Editions have such a table.

Forgotten Realms did have it's own table.

And I believe Magic Item Compendium merged gems with art items- and gave examples of appropriate items.

Art maxes out at 12000gp, Gems max out at 8000gp- but the MIC combined items table maxes out at 16000 gp.

One of the things that annoyed me about Gem golems in Monsters of Faerun, was that they need a single 10000 gp stone as the base on which to build the rest of the golem- but normally you can't find stones that size.

The MIC rules could be used to justify 10000-16000gp gemstones.

Aren't gems just worth as much as they're worth?

For example, a 500 gp ruby is worth 500 gp, a 100 gp sapphire is worth 100 gp, a 5,000 gp diamond is worth 5,000 gp, etc.

Yeah I was thinking this as well. That worth is derived as base worth and size. So it is possible to have a 5000 gp ruby and a 5000 gp diamond.
