View Full Version : Of Dice and Men

I know it sounds kinda nuts, but I sorta associate things with each dice, based on what they're used for, and over time they've developed a sort of personality in my mind. Some examples:

d20: He's sorta the everyman. Kinda jockish and arrogant, since he's used ofr everything. REALLY self-important and fickle.

d12: Kinda lonely, a bit of an outcast. But rather than going off and being depressed, he's angry and violent, and picks on other dice to make up for it.

d10: d10s are twins, basically the same, but they're a little bit different. d10 is more sociable and outgoing, but d100 is somewhat reclusive and awkward. Still, d10 loves his bro and seems torn between doing his own thing and trying to help his shut-in bro.

d8: d8 is D6's big brother. He's a protective bro, and he does his best to set a good example for little d6. The problem is that he's a rather physical fellow and little d6 is good at everything, so he has some trouble relating to her, and it's a little awkward since she's more popular.

d6: D8's little sister. She's a prodigy and she's got lots of interests. She can do almost anything. d8's still bigger and he's better at what he does, but neither of them is sure how long that will last. d6 really likes her brother, though, and sometimes she'll subconsciously hold herself back so big brother can keep protecting her.

d4: d4 is a sneak. The littlest of the bunch, he can't do much, but he's quick and sharp.

So, yeah, a little crazy. Anyone got their own take on the minds of their dice? Mine are a little dysfunctional, I think.

They seem a really nice lot! I especially like the relationship between d8 and d6, maybe because I've a little sister too (actually not that little - she's 21), and I feel very protective towards her...

Well, the d6/d8 dynamic's quite nice, but you have d12 picking on all of them, d20 crowing his own superiority, d4's scheming, and d100 is just sorta dark, as much as d10 tries to help get him out into the world and making friends.

What about d3, d5, d7, d16, d24, and d30?

What about d3, d5, d7, d16, d24, and d30?

They are the cousins that no one talks about.

d3 is the baby of the family and thus does very little.

d5 follows d6 around all of the time wondering why she doesn't let d5 play her games.

d7 is basically the middle child between d6 and d8 that everyone forgets about.

d16 is the relative that everyone forgets to send invitations to.

d24 tries to pick on d20, but d20 just tells him off by saying he's just jealous that d20 is the one everyone uses.

d30 is the crazy cousin that sits in the corner until people remember him for some crazy stunt that d20 just doesn't cut it for.

And of course, d100 is the eccentric uncle/grandfather that shows up every once in a while.

I need to find an excuse to use all my exotic dice in a game sometime. Especially the d16. It's so pretty!

Also, d12 is jealous of the d3, who gets used more even though it doesn't exist.

I'm holding a legit d3 in my hand right now. I only have one, though.

I too have one d3 (razor edge), I had to get it... even if it is a polyhedral lie. Then again, the d10 is a bit of a lie too, but at least it has its brother.

What does it look like? I might be a little bit drunk right now, but I honestly can't imagine how a D3 die would look like...

Unless it's one of those spinny things, then it would be easy - just a triangle with equal sides impaled on a stick at the centre. But those ones are kind of lame, in my honest opinion. There's something satisfying about actually throwing the die as opposed to simply twirling it.

More on topic, I think the OP's descriptions pretty much fit the bill. I haven't seen D12 used at all in my games so far, but we aren't too big on barbarians and massive axes.

That one has numbers, on the edges. You can see them, if you look closely.

Let's invite Kevin_Cook: he knows many, oh, many members of the family that no one talks about, the genealogic tree could do giant leaps with him!

OP it sounds like you are experiencing some mild form of Synthesia. That's a good thing.

I would say he's the drunk uncle who shows up already smashed, manages to do irrepairable damage to the table during dinner and then everybody quietly agrees never to invite him again after he climbs into his car and drives away.

D4 is the evilest of the bunch, really mean bugger. Proof: no matter what number it shows, it still hurts like hell stepping on it.
