If I have a Wizard with Alacritous Cogitation and Heighten spell can I power my reserve feats indefinately as long as I don't use the Alacritous Cogitation slot?

Sounds like yes. You act like a sorrcerer. Reserve feats arn't the best to begin with so it's not that broken anyway.

Alright, I just wanted to make sure that all I needed was the capability to cast a spell of the required type, rather than knowledge of an appropriate level spell before metamagic applications.

Also, from what I've heard it's very hard to make a Wizard broken...

If you are taking Alacritous Cogitation anyway, you might want to look into Versatile Spellcaster. The 2 for 1 trade is a great deal at any level. The only time you might worry about it is during an endurance run against spread out mooks.

Don't you need to expend spell slots, rather than spells prepared, to use versatile spellcaster?

The feat itself specifically mentions slots, so I have doubts.

A slot filled with something is still a slot, no?

Even if that's the way your DM rules it, would it be so bad to be a Wizard who (almost) doesn't have to prepare spells? For example:

Level 5 Focused Specialist Conjurer with 18 Int, Alacritous Cogitation, and Versatile Spellcaster has

3(3)/3(3)/2(3)/1(3) spells per day

He leaves 1 3rd level specialist slot open (AC) and prepares the other 3. He prepares 1 2nd level spell and leaves the rest open. This means he can cast (spontaneously) 2 additional 3rd level spells, 3 2nd, and 3 1st level spells for a revised spell per day list of

0/3/3/3/6 where only 3 of the 3rd and 1 of the 2nd level spells have to be prepared.

well, if that's how Versatile Spellcaster works, then it would be a great choice thanks for the sugestion.
