One of my quirks is that I like to listen to music as I create a character. It helps me get into the mood and inspires creativity when I'm working. So, here's the rub: I'm trying to make a Paladin character, and I can't find any really good music that fits the "holy knight" archetype, and it's starting to bug me.

So here's my question for you guys: can you help me out here and give me some good music for a paladin? Soundtracks, songs, vocals, no vocals - give me anything that screams "PALADIN" to you. Thanks!

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

Iron Man by Black Sabbath? whenever i think about playing a paladin, this song plays in my head...its the type of paladin I would want to play...and itd make for a great backstory...a paladin traveling thru time, gets turned into a living construct, falls, becomes blackguard...sounds like a great character concept for the next game im in

I'm not a huge Dragonforce guy, but the song "Heart of a Dragon" might be pretty good.

There are a few other Hymns, that have a pretty Paladin-y feel. "Sound the Battle Cry" and "Hold the Fort." "Face to Face (in Stern Array)" Though those are very clearly Christian and as such have religious content. Be forewarned.

Sousa marches maybe?

"Stand" by Blues Traveler just screams Paladin. "It's a long.... way to fall!" The lyrics describe some of the Paladin's features fairly well, too, though I'm sure they didn't intend it that way.

Stand
Stand and walk
Tragedy
Is cheap and so is talk
Decision
Yours to make what will you do
In the end
It comes back to you
Cause it's a long... way to fall

Thunder
Don't scare me at all
Lightning
Well just a little
Pressure
It ain't worth a dime
And your wounds
They'll all heal in time

Cause it's a long... way to fall

The answers are getting harder
The answers are getting harder
The answers are getting harder
(If an answer comes to those who pray)
The answers are getting harder
(If an answer comes to those who pray)
The answers are getting harder
(If an answer comes to those who pray)

The answers are getting harder and harder
And there ain't no way to bargain or to barter
But if you've got the angst or the ardor
You might faint from the fight but you're gonna find it
For every challenge could have paradise behind it
And if you accept what you have lost and you stand tall
You might just get it back and you can get it all
So now you know why it's a long way to fall
Yeah cause it's a long way to fall

Cause it's a long... way to fall

"American Tune" by Simon and Garfunkel strikes me as a song for a Paladin in a reflective mood.

The lyrics for Indestructable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWxBrI0g1kE) SCREAM paladin at me. Loudly. In the most badass, 300-esque Spirited Charge way possible. With 2 levels of Fighter for Dungeon Crasher.

Then there's This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=les441EzrCg) or This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apRtamRa3NI). "Holy Orders; Be Just or Be Dead"

Obviously, my take on paladins is a bit old testimate/crusades type, rather than the Boyscout veriety.

You get way more badass points that way, and the party is prone to LIKE your pre-combat speeches.

(One of my Paladins stood up for a Vampire once, against an inquisition party- a cleric, another paladin, a ranger and a Thief. 'It must be nice to only grant mercy to those you like. She has surrendered to me. You will not take her. Stand down or be cut down.')

Honestly, I could easily associate a lot of Castlevania music with paladins. You know, the classics like Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears (though Young Nobleman of Sadness could also be awesome). Whatever version you like.

I cannot believe no one has yet listed THE iconic paladin song (for a certain type of pallie, anyway):

C'est Moi (from Camelot soundtrack)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgnwSpnJxxM

Lyrics:
Camelot! Camelot!
In far-off France I heard your call.
Camelot! Camelot!
And here am I to give my all.
I know in my soul what you expect of me,
And all that and more I shall be.

A knight of the Table Round should be invincible,
Suceed where a less fantastic man would fail.
Climb a wall no one else can climb,
Cleave a dragon in record time,
Swim a moat in a coat of heavy iron mail.
No matter the pain, he ought to be unwinceable,
Impossible deeds should be his daily fare.
But where in the world
Is there in the world
A man so *extraordinaire*?

C'est moi! C'est moi, I'm forced to admit.
'Tis I, I humbly reply.
That mortal who
These marvels can do,
C'est moi, c'est moi, 'tis I.
I've never lost
In battle or game;
I'm simply the best by far.
When swords are crossed
'Tis always the same:
One blow and au revoir!
C'est moi! C'est moi! So adm'rably fit!
A French Prometheus unbound.
And here I stand, with valour untold,
Exeption'ly brave, amazingly bold,
To serve at the Table Round!

The soul of a knight should be a thing remarkable,
His heart and his mind as pure as morning dew.
With a will and a self-restraint
That's the envy of ev'ry saint
He could easily work a miracle or two.
To love and desire he ought to be unsparkable,
The ways of the flesh should offer no allure.
But where in the world
Is there in the world
A man so untouched and pure?
(C'est moi!)

C'est moi! C'est moi, I blush to disclose.
I'm far too noble to lie.
That man in whom
These qualities bloom,
C'est moi, c'est moi, 'tis I.
I've never strayed
From all I believe;
I'm blessed with an iron will.
Had I been made
The partner of Eve,
We'd be in Eden still.
C'est moi! C'est moi! The angels have chose
To fight their battles below,
And here I stand, as pure as a pray'r,
Incredibly clean, with virtue to spare,
The godliest man I know!
C'est moi!

Maid of Orleans - by Darkmoor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Ni-wrFwVs) Or some other stuff by Dark Moor, too.
Blood is the Price of Glory - by Ensiferum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY8iIBs5axs&feature=related) Like Manowar songs, this goes for all frontliners.
The Maiden and the Mindstrel Knight - by Blind Guardian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zSONEoJv18) More for the old-school, knightly paladin.

And not a song, but awesome music:
Crusaders - by Harry-Gregson Williams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3m3le8py6A)

And one more, for fun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tL_rYDO7Mw)

Warriors and some other songs by Freedom Call seem rather paladin-like to me.

(One of my Paladins stood up for a Vampire once, against an inquisition party- a cleric, another paladin, a ranger and a Thief. 'It must be nice to only grant mercy to those you like. She has surrendered to me. You will not take her. Stand down or be cut down.')

Blade by Frameshift (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYx1mpjEee4)

For heritage, love and pride
And for this land I’ll give my life
Guard against the raping flag
Here’s a blade, now you’re a man
From a horse or flaming arrow
You may take a mortal blow
They will underestimate
Damage one man fighting for his home can make

I have no choice but to defend

I draw the line
In this dirt with my metal blade
Not gonna cross
If you don’t believe that
In the end they may take all I love away
But not today

Walls of rock on an empty plain
Give way to greed when it invades
But there’s a creed that builds a bridge
Of strength and honor in this village
Stench of death seeps from the ground
Take a life with a name and lay it down
I see their eyes fade and turn to stone
Their faces haunt and follow me home

It's time to take a stand
I have no choice but to defend

I draw the line
In the sand and I’m asking you
Brother of mine
Won’t you follow through so
In the end they may take all I love away
But not today

With this blade in my hand
I’m ready to conquer
Ready to fight for it all
And if I should die I will go with honor
Take one more life before I fall
With this blade in my hand
I’m ready to take back
Take back what’s rightfully mine
And if I should die
My brothers will come through
Victory’s here for my kind

I draw the line
In this dirt with my metal blade
Not gonna cross
If you don’t believe that
In the end they may take all I love away
But not today

Depending on the personality or backstory of your paladin, here's some other stuff that could work. I should warn you though, I tend to favor musical theater for my inspiration, haha.

"Stars", by Javert from Les Miserables (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROr4vdRZxpU): Great song for a guy who favors law over good (but can still be LG). I wouldn't recommend this for background music, but it was good for inspiration on a inquisitor character.
"Into the Fire", by Sir Percy Blakeney from The Scarlet Pimpernel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrqCAO4BYe8): Fantastic for those inspiring songs about charging into fatal situations despite the odds simply because it's the right thing to do.

Also, simply do a search for "Gregorian chants" on YouTube if you want a monastery feel. I know there's more stuff that I'm forgetting right now, so if I can find it again, I'll post that too. Grr, I hate having bad memory!

God's gonna cut down (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=9937343)

If there is any song that fits a holy warrior this is it.

There is also Hurt by nine inch nails and performed by Johnny Cash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go&feature=related) for the paladin/holy warrior that has gone to far in his pursuit of evil and is lamenting his loss (and in doing so takes the first steps to redemption)

On a very similar note from the same group, there is Sophia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPaUvYPRzrM&feature=related).

Also of interest (but *very* bleepy) is Darkangel by VNV Nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SCt2S6Tp1I). Works well for a falling paladin, grey guard or fallen angel.

I would link New Model Army as well, but they are probably CG ^^.

Definitely the, um, bardadin kind of music though, as opposed to the 'bring the fury' type.

Personally I think Hammerfall works great as paladin music. Like this video for example:
Hammerfall - Natural High (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDTmKNl3e6Q)

Summarized: a paladin like warrior rides a giant eagle, drops down through the ceiling into a vampire lair and smacks some vampire spawn into goo with a huge enchanted warhammer. Good times.

Yeah, that's one song (of a relatively small number) that I'd be happy to belt out in front of a lot of strangers.

And yes, only appropriate to a couple very specific kinds of pally, but for them it's perfect. The other kind (other than bardadins, that is) is the paladin who is utterly self-satisfied and full of himself. A bit less common in the D&D-verse than they once were, but still not terribly hard to find.

Maybe Defy You by The Offspring?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkzVHer6B8A

Ignore the video, and the lyrics sound paladin-y enough for me, it's all about defying something with all you will and strength, never giving up, and spitting in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Fearless by the Prince of Darkness himself for a lone wolf paladin that's merciless, a bit like Kore (from Goblins) but less evil.

Yes, you're right. I should not have forgotten that The Impossible Dream is the best possible choice for a non-optimized paladin. Of course, for a Superman in plate it's not as appropriate.

funnily enough, thats manowar as well. /pedantic

I'm the lord of the day and the night.

A bit hokey but

The Touch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZKpByV5764)

You got the touch
You got the power
After all is said and done
You've never walked, you've never run,
You're a winner
You got the moves, you know the streets
Break the rules, take the heat
You're nobody's fool
You're at your best when when the goin' gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You never bend, you never break
You seem to know just what it takes
You're a fighter
It's in the blood, it's in the will
It's in the mighty hands of steel
When you're standin' your ground
And you never get hit when your back's to the wall
Gonna fight to the end and you're takin' it all
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You're fightin' fire with fire
You know you got the touch
You're at your best when when the road gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
You got the touch
You got the power

There's also "Holding out for a hero" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HPnCraoav0). It's more an anthem for someone looking for a paladin, rather than being a paladin themselves.

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream
of what I need

[Chorus]

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder end rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet

[Chorus]

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere
Watching me

Through the wind end the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like the fire in my blood

Furious Angels by Rob Dougan. may not be in the same line of "epic" that a lot of people are suggesting, but if you're looking for a much darker, more introverted pali (possibly one with a serious tragedy/heartache in the back of his mind), I suggest it.

There's also "Holding out for a hero" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HPnCraoav0). It's more an anthem for someone looking for a paladin, rather than being a paladin themselves.

This. And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCvkclwBRjM).

But I think The Impossible Dream might as well have ended the thread. Nothing more can be said :smalleek: It's too awesome.

The lyrics for
Obviously, my take on paladins is a bit old testimate/crusades type, rather than the Boyscout veriety.

I demand you tell me how to make a signature so I can put this in it, and then add an addendum telling others to worship you.

Stand down or be cut down. Going to remember that one.

Since a few others have already suggested Warriors by Freedom Call (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzir1B43I3E), I will recommend something else.

Yep, User CP in the top left of the forum bar.
Glad you guys like the quote XD
Paladins, to me, reprisent the bloodied edge of the sword of good. You stand for all that's pure and good. You don't sit there and preach, that's a cleric's job. Your job is to bring the fear to the bad guys.

Improved Sunder is practically a prerequisite to paladins, dunno why they made it a blackguard prereq.

How about Trans Siverian Orchestra's Epiphany?

The first time i listened to this track I started thinking about background stories for a paladin that started to walk the path of righteousness after a particularily traumatic event.

Standing up for the rights of the "Evil but not necessarily deserving of death" is something I'd like to see more of when it comes to paladins.

The code does not say "Destroy all Evil" or "punish all Evil beings" but "punish those that harm or threaten the innocent" after all.

On tunes- Durkon (LG dwarven cleric) does use Led Zeppelin lyrics (I'm not sure how much they were modified) as a battle challenge in a bonus strip in War & XPs. Not a paladin- but close:

Fer I come from tha land o' tha ice an' snow
from tha midnight sun where tha hot springs blow
Tha snow falls hard and dinnae ye know?
Tha winds o' Thor be blowin' cold!

I'm wearin' steel tha's bright and true
I carry news tha must get through!
I choose tha path where no-one goes!
I hold no quarrrrrrrter!

Some of the lyrics are a bit specific to the game its from, but I'm surprised no one else linked it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9wUrZcf-qI)

Escaflowne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv50DzU2l4s) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSlNHi6wgQQ&feature=related) might be appropriate here.

Nightwish 10th Man Down

One of my favorite AMV's uses this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATS5UsFKyNQ)

A lyrics video for this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaEY7Z3QsOA)

For some reason, this song always makes me think of paladins, conflicted paladins, maybe, but paladins.

Touch Me by "The Doors" is what I listened to the last time I made a paladin for a friend....

Come on come on come on and touch me babe... Yeah lay on hands

Can't you see that I'm not afraid... Courage

And taking the song out of context would be something a paladin would do XD

I'll see your Impossible Dream and raise you an Impossible Dream as performed by Brian Stokes Mitchell. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g-T46ja95s&feature=related)
Though I have to admit that I much prefer his performance on the soundtrack (when he hits the impossible note at the end), but I can't find it on YouTube.

The Richard Kiley version from the old soundtrack is still my favorite, but I can't find it on youtube except for a terrible quality recording with a skip in it from someone filming a record player.

And yeah, pretty much *the* Paladin song, IMO.

Damn; someone beat me to The Impossible Dream. But I always felt that "I Don Quixote" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS8rpt1y6lk&feature=related) was pretty good for something in the same vein, or at least the same musical.

Also, another Manowar one - "Let the gods decide" - sort of works for the more religious types of Paladin; the 'our ancestors cheer' bit goes particularly well with a dwarven one, in my opinion, but that's optional.

Another rarely used, but viable option is "Ghost Riders in the sky" (any version) for the 'I shall punish sinners' type of Paladin, mainly because of the 'devil's herd' part and because of the contemplative, tragic mood it can set. Perhaps more appropriate for a Paladin intended as a villain or a Blackguard, though. Think - duh - Ghost Rider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Rider_%28comics%29) for a rough idea.

"The Dawn of Battle" by Manowar, Sabaton's "We Burn" and "The Bruce" by Grave Digger have been known to inspire awesome Paladins of Slaughter, on the other hand.

In that vein, Invasion of Israel by Saviour Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KepsB-D2zv0) brings to mind a paladin swearing vengeance, particularly the last verse.

And as birds flying, so will God defend her faith
And passing over, he will shelter her embrace
"And I will curse them that will curse thee in this day,
And all that prey upon you, I will give for prey"

here's another one, although it's more for a conflicted paladin;
