How about this...

The party is hired on to escort a small trade caravan, since you said there is a high mercantile interest in this part of the world. Along the way, people start to disappear. Solve the mystery of where the teamsters are going fast, or face the possibility of disappearing themselves or not being able to take the cargo with so few people. Once the numbers get too small to operate, one of the remaining teamsters suggests sending the guards back to town for help. He is actually an assassin who was hired by a rival guild to slow-down/stop the caravan and distract the guards so that his guild could take over the shipment.

Yeah lots of fun can be had with caravans. Raiders, rival trade houses, rival cities, wild animals, magic gone wrong all these and more can attack a caravan and could lead to more adventures related to it.

Also trade espionage and vandalism. Maybe a trader that wants a rival dead or wants the party to make sure he can't fulfill a contract so he can get it OR if your party is good aligned then maybe a trader that is worried this is happening to him.
This can also be applied to whole merchant guilds. Maybe there are two merchant guilds in the same city and both want to edge the other out or maybe there is just one and it is forcing independent traders to join and pay a ridiculously high fee.

A group of immortals who get immortality by draining life out of people. To make them weak, say that they are in the very late stages of aging, and the boss could be their leader who is back to his youth. The other members will have very low physical stats, but will use some stratagy. They could justify their killing spree by choosing "appropriate" targets.
You could also do that the process gives them immortality, but doesn`t stop them from aging.

I can't find the link but somewhere on the WoTC website there's some pretty good 1-off adventures for a variety of levels. They're pretty generic and there's not much special about them but they make pretty decent filler.

If they're first-level characters, they shouldn't get nice things. It's the D&D way. Make 'em kill dire rats for at least a few sessions. Throw in a zombie or two if you're feeling generous or maybe an orc with a greataxe when want a PC to die. :smalltongue:

throw a Crimson Scourge at the party, who has been hired by a recurring villian (or a future BBEG)

A pack of wolves led by a Worg is attacking herds in a farming community. The party is supposed to stop this.

Edit: You will probably kill the party if the wolves fight to the death. Have them make morale checks, but come back a little while later after running away. And don't forget their Trip ability.

If you want it to be city/trade based have the party hear that a noblewoman was kidnapped and is being held in the sewers. There is a reward for her return; when the party goes down they fight Dire Rats and Were-rats that have infested the sewer tunnels. Eventually they discover that the noblewoman is a Were-rat herself, and you end up killing her.

Scourge of the Howling Horde is a short-but-sweet adventure, meant to last a level or two. Fits anywhere where you have a remote village with a goblin tribe close enough to threaten trade routes through the village. There's also quite a few modules online, some of whom are *INCREDIBLY* short.

A local lord has a problem with a local monster that's been bothering some farmers, and he puts a bounty on it... odd, though, that he wants you to bring back the beast's heart as proof.

A little later, the same lord has a problem with a different (slightly stronger) local creature, and puts a bounty on it... odd, though, that he wants you to bring back the beast's hand as proof. If anyone bothers to check with the locals, none of the farmers in the area seem to think the beast is a problem, as it doesn't really do anything.

A little later, the same lord has a problem with a different (slightly stronger) local creature, and this time he wants you to bring back the beast's skull. If anyone bothers to check with the locals, they'd actually prefer it be left alone, as it's quite helpful for them. The party gets a Knowledge check when the sight it, to recognize that it's a type of creature that's normally good-aligned.

If the party gets all three items back to the local lord, he completes the dark ritual and transforms into an X, which then goes on a rampage and attempts to kill everyone, starting with the party.

This adventure follows simular lines of some of the earlier suggestions but how about this:

The players are travelling down a road of some sort (protecting a carrivan, travelling, your choice) when they are attacked by a large group. (My suggestion for the group is waves of 4-8 cr1/4 monsters (kobolds would be ideal)) they are over wellmed and all nocked out. They then wake up to find them selves deprived of their equipment and locked in cells. The players will have to escape (thier equipment in a near by locker room, possibly with extra treasure). It is entirly up to you but who are these asaulte-ers. Are they slave traders, a sacrificial cult, or some angry people making a point.

please remember that this is mearly a suggestion and feel free to take out and add to it.!

A local trade house that specializes in creation of magicaly do-dads has a production facility outside of town. A secure base with clerks, hedge wizards and a overseer.

The game starts by the party being hired to break into the place and steal notes from the overseers office. The task comes with one limitation that is not negotiatable, no one on site is to be harmed.

If all things go ok the party is paid thier money and all is golden. At the meeting for payment it is revealed that they were hired by the head of security for the site. He wanted to find holes in his security. He will pay them more money to work for two weeks fixing the holes in the security.

It seems that the site is also coming under attack from a group of terrorists lead by someone calling themselves red fern. As well as keeping the place secure they have to also have to try to find red fern and stop him.

------

As a small bit of background. Weeks ago the overseer had a problem. toxic magical waste needed disposing he had been shipping it out into the woods a few miles away from the site. His problem was locals finding the waste site. The overseer and a group of select men dealt with the problem. rounding up the locals and having them killed. Thier blood staining the trees red. The twisted magical wate in the area caused the innocent to haunt the overseer, his mind split and now while he sleeps his alter ego rises and tries to get vengence on the overseer and the magical factory. This form is of course known by the name Red Fern.

How this gets resolved is up to the players.

a few thousand years ago there was an ancient socity of mages who preety much ruled everything but they are all dead because of a war with an ancient death god who was killed and his soul esald within an artifact called the mask of death

earthquake near town opens up a dungeon filled with ancient macguffins and phat loot.

instant dungeon crawl that can eat up as much time as you need it to till you've got everything worked out.

if the players seem reluctant to bite the hook

have some merchant hire them out for an expedition

heck, you could even insert some future recurring villians in the form of rival adventuring parties hired to do the same thing, clear the dungeon and claim loot.
