If a character (or party) is invisible, then so is all of their equipment. If they are braving some deep dark dungeon, then they likely have a light source. In order for light to be useful, it needs to be visible. So, when invisibility is cast, does the light essentially go out or is there a floating ambient light that gives away the party location?

Light, however, never becomes invisible, although a source of light can become so (thus, the effect is that of a light with no visible source).

From the SRD. So yes, light source is invisible, light isn't. Best bet is to drag a stick with Light cast on it at the end of a 10ft rope, so there is at least a 10ft displacement between the source and the party.

Light is always the inferior option. Go for darkvision, there are a good deal of ways to get that.

But what if you have to discern colours!

Yeaaaaaaaah...

More on topic, I think having light with no visible source would make sense. You must always keep in mind that this is a fantasy world with magic and what not, and as rules say the equipment goes invisible with you, so should the lamp. But it's obvious that the character's interaction with the world while invisible isn't affected at all - else he'd be blind because the moment your eyes turn invisible you stop seeing anything.

So, yeah, magic. And monsters should be pretty suspicious about light coming from nowhere and moving around. Poke it with a stick!
