View Full Version : Who would you cast to play the OOTS characters in live action?

As the OOTS is a stick figure comic we have infinite possibilities to imagine what the characters look like.

recently i've noticed that Franck Dubosc looks a lot like Tarquin could look like

May I suggest, though, that V be played by none other than Tilda Swinton (http://www.google.com.ph/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCkQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.imdb.com%2Fname%2Fnm0842770%2 F&ei=s7YFTdDdHsizrAe90_iQDw&usg=AFQjCNFu_4HW423GvQr-ZtVTm5UsBz5DTg)? That is all I ask.

That's where I'm hitting a wall.

Anyone who has seen Jake beat the almighty hell out of the guys in Once Were Warriors can attest to his ability to pull off a very convincing rage, but he would be no where near silly/cutesy enough to play Thog.

Which leaves the question of who plays Gannji.
Tim Roth? I know I cast him as the shoe-wearing wight, but that's only because I couldn't think of anybody adn he was the first actor who came to my head. Roth can do weaselly, and he can be repulsive and endearing at the same time. He'd make a damn fine Gannji.

Well of course I remember him as Haldir and I have vague memories of the episodes of Xena he was in. I still haven't seen Rise of the Lycans and I've never watched Shortland Street, though I hear it's good. Those are the only things I know he's in.
In my mind, Xykon is Johnny Depp and it'll take some seriously impressive scenery chewing to dislodge that image.

FotC were my favourite act in the Melbourne comedy galas before I ever saw their TV show. Oh I completely forgot he was in LotR, though that is far from his best work. He also plays the big bad in the sword of truth TV series, but I didn't see if that was any good. He is a fantastic stage actor, which is where I see him most.

Johnny Depp is a massive overactor, but very talented nonetheless. I think his brand of chewing, swallowing, digesting, and passing the scenery would be perfect for Xykon. As for intimidation, he was seriously unnerving in Sweeney Todd, even if his singing left much to be desired.

For the good Captain, I decided on Antonio Banderas. I was hesitant at first, this being a very obvious choice. But hey, when you want a swashbuckler, go to the guy who buckles every swash he sees.

Yeah good choice. I lean somewhat towards Sean Connory, a little old maybe, but he can charm the pants off anything on the planet. Also be a nice little nod to the outrageous character/mentor he played in Highlander.

As for his seeming refusal to change his accent, if a Russian submarine commander can have a Scottish accent (Hunt for Red October) than Julio can damn well have one too.

Lovely Casting. Zac Efron as Pompey is going to be soooo hilarious.

On a side note though, I've always pictured Miko to be wide-faced, and Lucy Liu might be a tad too thin looking. Might I suggest Gong Li? She can look pretty masculine too under proper prod design. ^_^

EDIT: Also, can I motion Hinjo's role be given to Takeshi Kaneshiro instead (House of Flying Daggers, 2046)? Yusuke looks too bishie and shady, while Takeshi can pull off a goody goateed paladin pretty nicely. ^_^

Al Pacino as Xykon. He's got the age, the badassness, and chews scenery like it was made of gum.

Wouldn't have thought it from Firefly, but after seeing Dollhouse I can picture Alan Tudyk as Belkar. Just a thought there.

I could see either Christopher Lloyd or Willem Dafoe being Xykon - Lloyd can easily skate the line of outlandishly funny and deadly serious, and Dafoe just plays that role of crazed, homicidal villain right - his voice certainly fits that role

Order of the Stick: No Cure for the Paladin Blues
Jet Li as Soon Kim

Nothing against Jet Li, I love him and think he'd pull it off spectacularly, but I feel as though a Japanese actor should play Soon. Perhaps Ken Watanabe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjUpyKjUlLA)?

As for Lee, Nero, and Cedrik, they need to be played by Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, and Tim Curry, at least as far as their voices go. Mmm.

He'd do an excellent job too. I'd be satisfied either way.

No. Jeremy Irons might work, although I feel Derek Jacobi is the much better actor, but Tim Curry's too comical sounding. Stephen Fry's smooooooth voice is, to me at least, beyond perfect for Cedrik.

I can give you Jacobi, but Tim Curry? Comical? I guess I can see that, but to me, it's partially that quality that sends shivers down my spine. He ruined my childhood as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wihDQnkzyMA), and now he's ruined my adulthood as Billy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keKMuKfSVI8) Flynn, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd5NDU15nv8) and in my opinion, if Chaotic Evil had a voice, it would sound surprisingly like Tim, only not quite as evil.

Although perhaps, he would be better as Xykon.

I dunno what it is about me, but I didn't find Pennywise the slightest bit intimidating. My siblings were terrified, but I was like 'It's just a clown. How is that scary?'

Well, he wasn't just a clown. He was every nightmare you ever had. He was your worst dream come true. He was everything you ever were afraid of. He was the devourer of worlds...and of children!

</Tim Curry>

The Monster Clown (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MonsterClown) trope has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. But even the on-set cast and crew were terrified of Tim Curry during the filming of IT. :smalleek:

Just a couple of ideas:Wouldn't have thought it from Firefly, but after seeing Dollhouse I can picture Alan Tudyk as Belkar. Just a thought there.

Now that you mention it, I can sort of see that too. Alan was definitely an odd choice for the role of Alpha, but he pulled it off much better than I ever would have thought. I can see him working as Belkar for much the same reason.

Okay, I was having doubts about NPH being cast as Elan, but that right there? That won me over.

It's funny that so many people suggest Jewel Staite as Haley. I have an NPC in my D&D game that I sort of base a little bit on Haley, and I always pictured her as looking like Jewel.

It's all about verisimilitude, though. If you were a child living in Derry ME in 1957, then yeah, it was fairly likely to happen. Same thing with how Xykon is considered scary even though the possibility of a skeleton trying to take over the world is not really something you or I need worry about.

It would be wrong to make "Order of the Stick" into a live action film. It's the principle of the thing. Why do you think it's called "Order of the Stick"?

Now an animated film would be the right way to go. But that's for a different thread...

Too right. It's amazing how coulrophobia seems to have become our cultural norm, somehow.

Clowns are people who willingly sacrifice their human dignity to make people laugh. Can anything be nobler or more deserving of praise and love?

Elan (http://www.thatfilmguy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/neil_patrick_harris.jpg). Nale (http://cache.io9.com/assets/images/8/2008/12/dr_horrible.jpg).
This one would be an obvious choice for me.
I still think Christopher Walken (http://www.solocine.it/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/christopher_walken.jpg) can be his dad. The movie wouldn't be made with stick figures, you know, so the twins wouldn't necessarily look identical to their father (or to human Xykon, for what matters).

Also, we need somebody younger as Roy, like J. August Richards (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/buffy/angel/images/340/s4_gunn1.jpg), for example, who's handled swords on screen before. Morgan Freeman can be his dad. :smalltongue:

Oh, and Felicia Day (http://media.gamespy.com/columns/image/article/111/1113639/all-in-a-days-work-for-felicia-day-20100817041517888.jpg) IS Haley.

Yeah, and Tilda Swinton (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/39/Tilda_Swinton_crop.jpg/200px-Tilda_Swinton_crop.jpg) as V would seem another obvious choice.

Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster.

I haven't thought about this too much, but a few I think would work:

Roy - Donald Faison (Turk from Scrubs)
Haley - Felicia Day
Thog - Neil Flynn
Elan/Nale - Joel McHale

Trying not to use so many big name actors. If it was ever to get made, the budget needed to hire all the A listers would make any production company wash their hands of the project.

Hmm :p

What about John Simm for Xykon, he does the goofy but immensly treatening villain very well :)

I agree with Rickman and Jacobi for 2 of the three directors, but must admit being woefully underknowledged about Fry, so I'll take your word for it :)

I think Matt Smith would make a wonderfull Vaarsuvius

and while we busy with Whovian actors, Tennant could make a good Redcloak, as would Ecclestone, they both are pretty good at the viscious and broken veterans of many artrocities.

Colin Baker could make for a good Dorukan I think (if we would get the flashback from SoD) (speaking of which, does anyone know where the soulstones of D and L are?)

Shojo:

Why has no on put George Takai as Shojo yet?

Seriously, picture his face flying around during Belkar's vision. His voice is a perfect mix of "cunning patriarch" and comedic timing.

Roy:

I was kind of thinking Idris Ebla, although he is a bit old. I think Raistlin82's suggestion of J. August Richards is brilliant, though.

Redcloak
Bryan Cranston. (Though, maybe I'm biased, because Walter White and Redcloak are both such chemistry experts.)
