The Hints:
Hint 1: Halley is red-haired. Hint 2: We may assume her father is also red-haired ... Hint 3: or were, in the past. Hint 4: He's also a captive in Tarkin's reign. Hint 5: And we all know what Tarkin does with his prisioners.Hint 6: He puts them to fight in the arenas.

You're about three weeks late here. People started guessing it was him as soon as he showed up as a prisoner who's been in the Empire of Blood for a while, and the introduction was nigh unto confirmation, even for a skeptic like me.

It has to be Nale!

Back on topic, people knew this when that strip first came out however long ago.

The fact that he introduced himself as Ian right after Tarquin mentioned the country's old name as Tyrania helped just a little bit.

I'm starting to think that all new forum members should be required to read - not post, but just read - the forum for a month or two before they post anything. No offense to the new folk, but everyone keeps posting things that are obvious, and would be obvious to them if they had cared to read what everyone else is saying first.

That really wasn't intended to be a mystery. Her father's name was just recently mentioned at the begining of this book to remind anyone who had forgotten. Not to mention in the VERY NEXT STRIP, Elan points out that Tarquin is holding him captive.

Wait, Tarquin is Elan and Haley's dad? That means... Ewwwww...

While I've often thought similar sentiments, I still believe that such measures harm forums more than they help them. New blood is a vital part of any community.

How did you come to that conclusion? Did you just completely ignore this sentence?

Hint 4: He's also a captive in Tarkin's reign.

I am really dying for see Ian face when Roy tell him that his daughter is in a relationship with Tarquin´s son.:smallfurious:

Does Roy even now that Haley's dad's name is Ian? AFAIR she only told Elan about her father.

The have meet in the same cell, so I deduce that the plot demand Roy and Ian eventually realize about their conexion. Something like :roy: ""Wait, did you said your daughter´s name is Haley. I am afraid to ask about that in this sub-plot but.....

Even if Roy knows Haley’s dad’s name is Ian, he doesn’t have enough context to realize that Ian the Red is Ian Starshine. Hence the total lack of recognition on Roy’s part during the reveal. As faustin says, there are still a few more dots for Roy to connect.

And has been shown as red haired in all his appearances.

Tass, you know as well as anyone that internal flashbacks are always biased, and therefore false. YOU CAN NOT TRUST ANYTHING STATED (or, in this case shown) DURING AN INTERNAL FLASHBACK!!! I really can't stress this enough.

Also, Ian is going grey already in many of those flashbacks. Being in the desert didn't help his color much.

This seems a fine thread for a partial derail: In #467 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0467.html), panel ten, Haley mentions some words of wisdom from her father, and Belkar makes praise about his (Ian's) roast chicken. We know from his conversation with the beetle slavers that Belkar has worked in the same general area as where Ian is captive, is it plausible that Belkar has met or worked with Haley's father in the past? I would then think Belkar more likely to recognize him than Roy, barring his awful spot-checks.

Haley said her dad taught her the words of a very wise man, not that they were her father's words. The quote is from the Kenny Rogers song "The Gambler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gambler_%28song%29)", and Belkar refers to the chain of fried chicken restaurants that Rogers owns. Hey all, chill.

I've been here 6 years, and this is the first I noticed anyone say a word about that being Haley's Dad. Some folks just don't read the idle speculation here because it Never. Ends. and most of it is off the wall or pure speculation. After awhile you learn to just read the comic and see what happens. I rarely come in these particular subforums because of that.

I didn't make the connection until I read this, and don't recall ever hearing the name of her Dad.

Give the guy a break.

Previous appearances of Ian Starshine: #93 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0093.html) #608 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0608.html) #681 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0681.html)

Strips where he is referred to by name: #131 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0131.html) #581 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0581.html) #680 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0680.html)

...and it's stated in the letter in #131, by Haley in #680, and in On the Origin of PCs that he's being held in Tyrinaria. Really, that old gladiator turning out to be Haley's dad is the entire point of #758. Having two characters do something as mundane as introduce themselves is not something Rich would put in the very last panel unless there was something pretty important about that introduction. It wasn't supposed to be subtle in the first place, so posing it as some sort of mystery three weeks after the strip went up is a bit silly, I'm afraid. :smalltongue:

It informed me, didn't it?

Just that right there is enough reason for it to exist.

And if that isn't sufficient, surely there are a few others bad at remembering names that have been reminded through this post.

If this was the only thread we'd had on the topic, I might agree with you. After the tenth or so, it starts to feel like overkill.

(In fact, this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169702) predicts the reveal well over a month before it happened, and it's only been a couple of weeks since the last post there. And that wasn't even the first time I'd seen the idea suggested. And here's (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177240) another recent thread with the exact same title as this one.

Et cetera.)

Over two weeks old and on page 3.

Not saying it's not redundant, but it's not like this is a Belkar Isn't Evil or a V's Gender thread. If you didn't glance in at a thread that was only posted in for 5 days last month, and then lost to time, then you'd miss it.

Tell him its redundant, but sarcastic comments aren't required or appropriate in this instance. I'm a master of them, I should know. This isn't the time or place for them.

Until your post above no one had even linked him to the last one. That'd have been an appropriate post.

'Just comment on it here'

'Oh, ok'

*Mod locks this thread*

The end.

Meh, if it's going to get locked anyway, may as well have some fun with it. The thread had been answered by post number two anyway.

And another theory about Belkar's eventual death is born.

Though as was already pointed out, Belkar's comment is a reference to Kenny Rogers, who performed the song Haley is quoting from.

Thanks for being the Voice of Reason, Tribble. I just read this thread and was feeling defensive of the OP, until I got to your comments.
