What are some good ways to get a good AC bonus at very low levels if you can't use armor? Bracers of Armor seem very expensive, same with the stat-boosting items like Gloves of Dexterity. I considered taking UMD to get a wand of Mage Armor or Shield of Faith or something like that, but as my CHR is pretty low it looks like that DC 20 will be hard to reach.

One method that isn't on the list is taking the "fist of the forest" prestige class. It gets you your Con-mod on AC instead of your Dex-mod. It's pretty handy for barbarians and other con-pumping classes and allows you to dump Dex (if you use str for attack and damage)

PrC's usually arent available at "very low levels" as the OP mentions.

Why are you not able to wear armor? What class are we talking about? How low is "very low levels"?

How low is your Cha? If you have 11 you can get +4 Armor AC for two hours/day from Hidden Talent: Inertial Armor

Two thoughts:

(1) Alter Self. Change yourself into a gargoyle or troglodyte. +6 or so Natural Armor bonus to your AC and you get to look well 'ard or cool as a lizard.

(2) If you're Small size and you ride a Large mount, Underfoot Combat: RAW abuse says if you're occupying the same space as something two size categories larger, you draw soft cover bonuses -- i.e. +4 to AC.

EDIT: BRAIN FREEZE.

Gargoyle isn't a humanoid, no go.

Why can't you use armor? You DO know that if the armor check penalty of an armor is 0, even if not proficient, there is no reason NOT to use it, unless you have to worry about an arcane spell failure chance? AND there are multiple ways to get arcane spell failure to 0?

Can you tell us as much detail as possible about the mechanics of your character?

Troglodytes are humanoids; gargoyles aren't.

Sure they are (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/troglodyte.htm)
