The fennec foxes were really awesome, Winthur! Foxes are my favorite! The video reminded of the "Simon's Cat" cartoons.

I had a live cuteness overload moment tonight, but it's not on video.

I live in a place where wildlife and suburbia have to coexist. Yesterday my dog, while inside the house, began barking at a herd of deer who had chosen to graze in the yard. I got her to quiet down, and we sat and watched them together.

Well, tonight dog indicated a need to go outside. So I took her out on a leash and she did the various things dogs need to do out there ... and we became aware that we'd walked right past a pair of grazing deer. They were quite close, and watching us intently. My dog got so excited that she began to vibrate ... but she did not bark. That was the cute part: she was trying with every fiber of her being to be good and keep that bark in!

I crouched beside her and put my arm around her; and I made a shooshing sound that deer like. The deer relaxed and started to graze again. We watched each other for a few minutes, then the dog & I went back inside.

I'll note that she has a special bark for deer, which is similar to the sound she makes when she sees a dog or a human she loves: high and excited. The bark she uses for racoons and foxes, or strangers is a deep, warning sort of bark.

My cat used to do this really weird sound that sounded like a cross between a hyena cackle and little dog's yap whenever he saw birds flying around through the windows. He only ever tried to actually catch one once, but learned that he can't go through glass pretty quickly.
