This is not a mistery to anyone.
but after 2 years of campaing and a tired DM I want to know if we re not misinterpreting the XP points needed to lvl up.

According to the table 3-2 from the players handbook (3.5)
" 1st 0xp
2nd 1000xp
3rd 3000xp... etc"

At first is obvious, you need no XP points to be a 1st lvl character
To reach the 2nd lvl yo need 1000xp points.

But here is our problem.
to hit 3rd lvl how much do you need?
3000xp sounds logic. BUT...

A) 3000xp from second level?
[that means you got: 1000xp(2nd) + 3000xp(3rd) for a total of 4000xp to achieve 3rd lvl]

- or -

B) 3000xp in total from first lvl?
[that means you got: 0xp (1st) + 3000xp(3rd) for a total of 3000xp to achieve 3rd lvl]

As i remember my master saying "reaching high lvls is tedious as hell".
He's saying is option "A". but if thats true it means you need a freggin total of 13.300.000 XP points to arrive at 20th LEVEL...

WHICH ONE IS THE CORRECT OPTION?

The numbers in the PHB are full XP totals. If you have 6000 XP total, you are level 4. The values are not added together.

The second option is the correct one.

pretty sure that you're not allowed to post that table. Because now anyone can derive how much XP it takes to get to level 20 and beyond.

OMG, now they can derive it here instead of googling it!

In case you need a reference beyond the text in the PHB (which I assume both you and your DM have scrutinized carefully), check the computer game Neverwinter Nights and its sequel. They are based heavily on 3e and 3.5e D&D rules, there is absolutely no ambiguity due to a computer handling the process, and there's no way WotC would have let an error that basic and that huge get in - and both games use your option B.

The XP points are being added actually, just not quite in the way you think.

To increase in level you need to gain experience equal to your current level times 1000.

At Level 1 you start at 0, to reach level 2 you need to gain 1*1000 xp for 1000.
At Level 2 you start at 1000, to reach level 3 you need to gain 2000 xp for (1000 + 2000) = 3000.

At least that how I've always read it as being done.

Yeah that confused me too at first.

I'm saying, saying "XP points" is redundant and silly. It's like "ATM machine" and "PIN number". :smalltongue:

Im afraid that doesn't make any sense. PersonMan's post isn't out of context, merely commenting on the term used, as the main question has already been answered.

XP is the commonly used abbreviation.

Topics don't tend to just stop around here. Even if the first question has been answered, people will post to enlighten you about, for example, the commonly accepted way of abbreviating "experience points".

Your title reads:

"Experience points points"

ATM Machine = Automated Teller Machine Machine
PIN Number = Personal Identification Number Number

It's definitely preferable to some other message boards where mods immediately lock a thread as soon as a partially-complete answer is supplied to the OP. I never really got the point of discussion-choking forum procedures. :smallconfused:

Can we stop debating about the "XP points" thing.

If anyone here has ever said "ATM machine" you're guilty of the same thing, there's a whole tv tropes page on it. lol

You're welcome.

I always say "ATM" and "PIN" because I am in fact pedantic enough to do that.

The Mod They Call Me: Actually, she had reason to be a cautious. Experience rules are specifically not part of the SRD, (http://www.d20srd.org/faq.htm) and thus would be against the forum rules to reproduce (third one down). It is, at the least, a good subject to tread lightly on, and to err on the side of caution.

Also, no need to be sarcastic.

Even so, because the conversation has become fairly off-topic, and at the request of the OP, thread locked.
