It's about time we had a thread about it.

Obligatory link (http://www.brunching.com/pornorpony.html) to the Brunching Shuttlecock quiz: can you tell which are MLP names and which are adult movie star names? It's all clean and PG, just in case you're concerned.

DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility (though I take full credit) for damage to your sanity and/or childhood memories.

I got 4 out of 12 right, having never actually seen or been in the vicinity of anything having to do with My Little Pony. I don't watch TV, so the only thing I know about them is that "There is a thing called 'My Little Pony' that exists", and one Robot Chicken skit I saw on youtube about the "My Little Pony: Apocalypse Ponies".

So, I think I can be a relatively reliable control group when I say "What the hell is wrong with their naming conventions?" :smalleek:

(Also, the Powerpuff Girls are badass, so I'm now intrigued about this show.)

I got 6 out of 12.

I got 9, and that was by going completely counter-intuitive and saying "pony" for everything that didn't possibly sound like it should be in a kid's show and vice versa. At least I didn't recognize any of the names, pornstar or pony...
Should I actually pay attention to this now? I've never had anything but contempt for the entire existence of My Little Pony, but if it's actually at all like the Powerpuff Girls I may have to rethink my stance on it.

It's rather amusing with lots of self-aware and under-the-radar humour (Lauren says she was aiming for the Pixar effect by appealing to older fans), and some funny implications (in one episode Applejack gets tired over-working, but the way she acts as a result makes it seem like she's stoned).

The characters are incredibly cute (especially Applebloom and Fluttershy) and really expressive, plus it's got songs which have a tendancy to ear worm. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyrAkwJ6WsY)

And on /co/ it's approaching Team Fortress 2 levels of memetic mutation:

Let's not forget that the original My Little Ponies series is one of many many shows in the 80's designed to sell children gimmicky toys with cute or badass cartoons. But if this one has an original spin it might be worth something, but I still won't watch it. I mean what will follow next, tea drinking parties?

I'm watching this with my sister and at the same time we go, 'WHY ARE YOU WAKING UP THE POOR HIBERNATING CREATURES?!'

She is now complaining that it keeps playing in her head. It just rolled over me, can't even recall it now. May be my nausea I gain when watching Power Puff Girls, Spongebob and similar modern crazes.

Did I mention anime little ponies causes me physical pain?

So far as I could tell from the above song, the My Little Ponies are like Terrestrial Gods. While the Sun unerringly marks the passage of time, it is their duty as the stewards of the earth to make sure that the forces of nature move in proper accordance with it.

The sun is however, controled by Princess Celestia (that unicorn-pegasus hybrid in the first image). Which supposedly supports the wild fan theories that she's actually an evil tyrant trying to keep the Ponies under her control.

Pony theories are wierd. There's even a timelord theory thanks to that brown pony with an hourglass mark.

She isn't even a new one, Applejack is one of the few classic pony names which have been kept for the main cast.

Wait, this is the PPG animator? That explains it! I remember seeing an ad or bump or something and thought that SOMETHING about the animation looked oddly familiar, in that back-of-the-mind sort of way.

Haven't watched it, for reasons that become more obvious when you know I'm a 24 year old male with neither little offspring nor little siblings to entertain. Is it written by PPG people, as well? Is it funny, or is it just a straight-up show about magic ponies for little girls?

When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.My favourite toys as a kid included a Tonka truck, a rockin' train set, and My Little Ponies. Don't knock 'em.

edit: Oh hey, I had one of the rainbow-haired pegasus ones. When you pulled her tail it got really long, and then you twisted her head to make it short again :D I think I have the apples one, too, although I might be getting mixed up.

I watched three episodes (the first two and the slumber party) and these are my impressions. Keep in mind, I do fall within the shows demographic target of 18-36 year old males, so I may be biased.

Pros:
Theme song is incredibly catchy, all of the musical numbers are well done.
Protagonist is named Twilight Sparkle (!)
Applejack is the cutest pony ever. Bar none. Except maybe the hyperactive pony whose name is escaping me at the moment.
Pillow fight?

Cons:
Only had time to watch 3 episodes
Spike is... meh. He's not so bad, but he annoys me some. Mainly because he can't compare to the magic of the other ponies.

Other thoughts:
So far it's struck me as a reinvention of Harry Potter, but with the power of love replaced by the power of friendship. Because it is magic.

If it makes you feel better, I was wondering this too. Not only can Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash fly, they also have some form of animal-empathy and weather-control the others don't seem to possess, respectively.

I guess Pinkie and Applejack just got the short end of the gene pool.

Earth ponies are the mundane ones. They have to make up for their non-supernatural abilities with sheer awesomeness, like one being crazy and insane, and the other being a southern hick-farmer.

Aside from that, Rarity is a gold-digger. That alone makes her my favorite little pony(-unicorn).

I am filled with deep self-loathing for saying this, but: My favorite My Little Pony is Fluttershy. If only there were actual people that were that nice.

Although, I think if we're opening up the favoritism poll for any character, regardless of species, I may have to go with Angel the Bunny.

It has been suggested that earth ponies probably tend to be stronger and tougher than pegasus ponies that need to be light to fly, and unicorn ponies who suffer from squishy wizard syndrome.

Good example of this is in the winter wrap up episode. Twilight struggles with hard farming work which seems to be done by the earth ponies.

There are male ponies, they just aren't main characters (Applejack's brother, for instance). For male main characters, we get Spike.

And I'm not sure how a world filled entirely with members of the female gender would be anything but a male fantasy world.

They're more similar to horses than the cutesy girl-ponies.

Ah. Weird.

...Applejack, the texan hick apple farming pony...
Her accent does get on my nerves a bit, for a single reason. I'm from Texas, and one side of my family is the hick farming type. My grandma owns a genuine ranch. My cousin is an honest-to-god cowboy. He rides a horse, and herds cattle, and smiths horseshoes in a forge (which is awesome to watch) and all that kinda stuff.

Applejack substitutes the word "y'all" for "you". Which is blatantly incorrect. "Y'all" is literally a contraction of "you" and "all". It only refers to multiple people. And yet, she says stuff like "Y'all need to get out of my face" even when she's only speaking to Rarity. In truth, she should just be attaching the "you" onto the beginning of the next word, like "Y'need to get out of my face". Every time she makes this mistake, it just jumps out at me and makes me facepalm.

Wiggy. Even in Kentucky it's plural but refers to a single group of multiple people and All y'all is multiple different groups of multiple people. And that's right next to Tennessee.

It is possible that in the example scenario, she was telling one of a member of a group off and extending the telling off to the rest of said group lest they get ideas?

I got 1 Pony and 1 Porny each. 2 out of 12. And I did in fact watch the original show. In part because of the Glowfriends after that. And yes, I still remember the tune of the song(mainly because a lot of it was just repeating the title ad nauseaum...)

Ohm'god would it be hard to choose. They've all maintained really good quality, in my opinion. Episode 2 did have a manticore, though. But Episode 11 has the Winter Wrap Up song. And Episode 9 has Flutterguy. But, but, but, the constellation bear in Episode 6 was so freaking awesome.

Ugh, I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with Winter Wrap Up. That song was too good.

Also, Jahkaivah, make more episodes come out.

So, I figured I should check out episode 1, just to see what all the noise is about.
And hey, of course it was a gosh darned cliffhanger. Episode 2 and beyond, here we go!

Also, I'm totally stealing this plot if I ever happen to run a game of D&D again.

The characters are incredibly cute (especially Applebloom and Fluttershy) and really expressive, plus it's got songs which have a tendancy to ear worm. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyrAkwJ6WsY))

I'm amused that I've been working on a webcomic plot idea for ages based on conflict between a goddess of light and a goddess of shadow and it's essentially similar to the concept behind My Little Pony.

I really love this show's art style BTW, especially the design of Ponytown.

Heh, reminds me of this list of house rules that fans made up for the six:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c226/saxcsa/MyTabletopPonies.png

I find it amusing how most of these seem to be because of Pinkie Pie.

1. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to borrow dice. She will start juggling with them.

2. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to roll Intimidate. She breaks out into giggles and is useless to the party for two hours.

3. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to use the Magical Clown class she found online. It's too broken

4. The Battle Mat and any Permanent Markers are not to be within 20 blocks of each other while Pinkie Pie is playing.

5. Pinkie Pie is not allowed to play World of Darkness...She just. Doesn't. Get it.

6. Pinkie Pie is not allowed to produce a musical starring all Kobolds in an attempt to improve a situation. That was just a very silly session...

7. Pinkie Pie cannot throw a party because "the party needs a party."

8. Pinkie Pie is not allowed to LARP. Ever.

9. DO NOT LET PINKIE PIE ATTEMPT TO PUT EYESHADOW ON THE BEHOLDERS. THAT JUST MAKES THE SITUATION WORSE!

10. No miniatures at the table. Pinkie Pie'll start making them have a tea party.

11. You will not ask Pinkie about her encounter powers, because she will then count her powers.

12. Pinkie Pie cannot ask Spike for advice on dealing with dragons in-game.

13. No "cute" monsters. She'll try to befriend them or get really mad at Rainbow Dash for killing them.

14. No griffins, otherwise things get awkward with Rainbow Dash.

15. Pinkie Pie is NOT allowed to play Jump Rope with the Displacer Beasts' tentacles.

16. Twilight Sparkle uses her DM intervention power to ban the use of anything that has the term "Laughter" in any Spell or Class Ability under its Name/Description/Effect.

17. No Blink Dogs. Pinky Pie will try to challenge them to a Staring Contest.

18. "Party Throwing" is not a viable profession

19. No ponies, pegasus, or unicorn mounts. 'Cuz that'd just be weird.

20. Rainbow Dash is not allowed to take a gryphon as a mount.

21. In fact, no mounts at all.

22. No Animal monsters, Fluttershy refuses to fight them

23. Sneezing powder is limited to one use per session.

24. Pinkie Pie must understand that simply because her character has a horn doesn't mean she actually needs to bring one to the table each week.

25. Anything Mr. Welch can't do, Pinkie Pie can't either.

26. No invisible ink at the table.

27. Pinkie Pie is banned from dumping all skill ranks into; and my only mid max the Skill "Perform: Song & Dance".

28. Pinkie Pie can NEVER have watch duties while the party is resting

29. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to take notes on the session that week. It only ends with stick figures.

30. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to roll stealth. It only ends in attacks of opportunity for the bad guys.

31. Pinkie Pie can only sing every other session, and the song is limited to 2 minutes in length. Unless it's really good.

32. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to use Diplomacy. She'll just do... whatever it is she does.

33. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to role play in Taverns. Twilight doesn't have the energy to make up 20 NPC 'friends' for her.

34. Pinkie pie is no longer allowed to play Rogues, randomly breaking into song defeats the purpose of the class.

35. Pinkie Pie is not allowed to grab Spike and make him play the dungeon boss. He's too big for the board.

36. Twilight is not allowed to put more then one puzzle in each session, the group won't get anything done otherwise.

37. Pinkie Pie is only allowed to try and solve any riddle in song twice. TWICE.

38. If Rarity receives a new suit of armor and is not informed as to what it looks like in excruciating detail PLAY. WILL NOT. RESUME.

39. When Rarity gets new equipment, claim it's jewel encrusted even when it's not. It's the only thing that keeps her playing some games.

40. For the safety of everyone involved, Pinkie Pie is not allowed to play Paranoia. And neither is Fluttershy.

41. Fluttershy may not have Angel as her Animal Companion beyond Level 2 (3.5); Dire Bunnies in theory sound cute, but are not viable combatants at small size.

42. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to paint the miniatures. They'll end up neon colored or rainbows.

43. Rainbow Dash is not allowed in a tavern, lest a plot de-railing bar brawl can and will ensue

44. When playing "Vampire: The Masquerade", change the word 'blood' to 'chocolate', less we get Fluttershy to faint at the table again.

45. Pinkie Pie can only DM oneshots. There's usually no topping what happens during her sessions.

46. Fluttershy may only once per week invoke the power to call upon past Mysterious/Magical Beasts she befriended to aid her in combat.

47. Twilight must have every possible festival/carnival/theatre/party planed out in advance for every town the campaign goes to...Or Pinkie Pie will do the planning instead. And the game might as well be cancelled this week.

48. AppleJack is not allowed to play a character that'll need "fancy mathematics".

49. Fluttershy is not allowed to play tank, she always cowers behind other players.

50. Pinky Pie cannot play Monk, as she will use Unarmed Strikes to tickle monsters.

51. Pinkie Pie can't play Half Orcs. She'll only use the size bonus to try and hug every one in the party at once.

52. Pinkie Pie is not allowed to play Druid, she'll call storms just to give people the hiccups.

53. AppleJack is the only one allowed to bring snacks to games. Pinkie Pie is not allowed. For any reason. EVER.

54. While Twilight is playing, there is always an answer to a plot point in a Library.

55. Third party material is banned. Especially when the third party is Pinkie Pie.

56. Many breaks are needed...Other wise, Pinkie Pie loses interest and starts chasing butterflies and then Fluttershy gets mad and starts chasing her and then Rainbow Dash starts chasing her and she messes up Rarity's hair on the way out and...It's a huge mess.

57. Dash is not allowed to GM, she makes giant combat sessions and her tweaked out NPC does most of the work anyway.

58. Applejack is not allowed to stay up late and play if she has to work the next day.

59. When playing, Twilight isn't allowed to make the argument that ALL of life's answers are in the damn library.

60. Nightmare Moon is not allowed to be used as a campaign villain. Or a DMPC.

61. Never make a gladiator scenario. Rainbow Dash will NEVER leave the arena.

62. Never make a performance battle. Pinkie Pie'll take it DEAD serious.

63. No matter how much Pinkie Pie insists, 'Prop Comedy' is not and never will be a real combat skill.

64. No saving princes from monsters, Rarity gets far too excited.

65. At the start of each campaign, the DM must inspect Pinky's Character Sheet to ensure she didn't spend all her starting gold on sweets, props, and party supplies.

66. Big Mac isn't allowed to play. He'll just correct Apple Jack the whole time and make her really pissy.

67. Also Rarity isn't allowed to hit on Big Mac if he DOES play...That’s just weird for everyone involved.

68. If for some reason Spike is joining the session, there won't be any enemy dragons, dude takes it too personal.

69. Just because Rainbow Dash can fly, doesn't mean her character can.

70. Even if Rainbow Dash's character can fly it doesn't mean she can do any aerial stunt Rainbow Dash can.

71. Rainbow Dash is no longer allowed to demonstrate indoors how a particular aerial stunt would help in the game until she pays for the pictures, the china set, Granny Smith's new hip and the windows.

72. The party is limited to a maximum of five players and one DM. If Pinkie Pie wants to invite Big Mac, Spike, Derpy Hooves, Granny Smith and Angel to all play, she can start her own game.

73. If Spike is there, don't let him get any soda. We don't want him burping away the player sheets.

74. Dash is not allowed to bring Gilda. She's just too serious about making her character be "cool".

75. Dragons are a game breaker. No bringing them in the game unless you want Shy to hide under one of the chairs.

76. Rarity is not allowed to dress like her character at the table. We realize how stunning your armor set is, Rarity, stop showing it off.

77. Pinkie Pie is also not allowed to dress as her character. Or the monsters.

78. If Rainbow Dash does not win initiative, she cannot force anyone with a higher initiative to "hold their action".

79. The above goes triple for Fluttershy.

80. Rainbow Dash is not allowed to air guitar every time she rolls a Nat 20.

81. Rainbow Dash is now allowed to re-roll if she gets a 1.

82. If Spike accidentally sent his character sheet to Princess Celestia, don't try to invite her to join the game.

83. When playing Equixalted Rainbow Dash is limited to a 30-second description of stunts.

84. Pinkie Pie is limited to one stunt per session.

85. Derpy is no longer allowed to play ever again, her actions are too...'outside the box' for most campaigns. Except Pinkie Pie’s.

86. Pinkie Pie isn't allowed to paint her dice so they all have smiley faces.

87. Not every Kingdom is ruled by a Purple-haired Epic-Level Magician Queen, Twilight.

88. The GM is not allowed to kill Fluttershy's character. Seriously. There will be tears.

89. Rules aren't everything, Applejack

90. That doesn't mean you can break ALL of them, Rainbow Dash.

91. Spike is no longer allowed to GM without supervision, especially when Rarity is playing.

92. Spike and Twilight are not allowed to get into edition arguments mid-game.

93. Pinkie Pie Can't Cast Magic Missile at the DARKNESS

94. Nobody is allowed to make a campaign based on how we defeated Nightmare Moon. Especially if your part is highly exaggerated.

95. Do not tell Pinky Pie to roll for things. She'll just roll around on the carpet for a while and then ask "DID I WIN!? HUH HUH? DID I!?"

96. Pinkie Pie songs are no longer allowed to give the party any kind of bonus whatsoever.

97. It's not Friendship Missile.

98. Pinky and Dash are not allowed to "test out" new spells on party members.

99. Don't tell Fluttershy the game is Dungeons and DRAGONS. Pick something else, ANYTHING else.

100: NO Spike can't make his character with a mustache.

Applebloom is good at extorting money out of spineless time-lord pony.

Only downside in this episode is that Fluttershy and Rarity haven't appeared. I guess that's because of budget-reason, as every individual speaking role costs money, even if performed by the same voice actor.

Still, Pinky Pie is crazy awesome as always.

So, having not really paid attention to My Little Pony before this show, I had no idea they were so radically different art-style-wise from the Powerpuff Girls-esque form in the show. Every other product of theirs just kind of creeps me the hell out now. They just seem off; like some kind of grotesque imitation so close to the original that it dips into the uncanny valley and pulls out my nightmares to distill in their tiny, vacant eyes, slack mouths, and pudgy, three dimensional limbs.

Yes, I know that, technically, the Friendship Is Magic art style is actually the newest, and thus the most alien, but...god; look at their eyes. It's the eyes that do it.

I think the old My Little Pony shows were dubbed in a variety of languages. As long as Hasbro thinks there's a local market for selling toys it will happen eventually.

So, apparently, though episode 11 occurred during the last day of winter and the first day of spring, episode 13 will take place during the beginning of autumn.

Do interesting things just not happen that often in a magical pony kingdom that the only event of note in a 6 month period was something not happening to Applebloom?

Tell them that you have a friend or somesuch who has a kid of the 'appropriate' age and who loves the bejesus out of this show. For added believability, say that you happened to catch one or two episodes and found it hilarious and fun to watch even for adults.

Or you could just come straight out and say that you enjoy the show and that you bet your niece's parents would enjoy it too. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

The key is to tentatively assert your manliness in a simple, direct anecdote relating your knowledge of the show. For instance:

Say, you were surfing your motorcycle down the freeway, bourbon in one hand, attractive, nubile female in the other, when you, did not so much see - rather, you perceived - an advertisement for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic as a searing void in the tapestry of your masculinity. Its concept did not exist within you, so its existence could only be felt by its lack of resonance with the seething aquifers of testosterone within your sculpted form. And, ever the selfless gentlemen, even as your motorcycle careened off the overpass into that combination Hustler/Cigar emporium, you manifested your Manvatar within the presence of your niece's parents so that you could inform them of this show their daughter might enjoy. But now you must be off, for that warehouse of pornography and smoking implements is about to explode, and you will need all of your cognitive powers present to walk away stoically from the flames.

Hello, ladies.
Look at your man. Now look at me. Now back at your man. Now back to me.
Sadly, he isn't me, but if he stopped watching other cartoons and started watching My Little Pony, he could seem like he's me. Look down, look up again! where are you? You're on a boat with the man your man could seem like.
What's that in your hand? Here it is! It's an oyster, with the first season of My Little Pony inside! Look again, the DVD is now diamonds! Anything is possible when your man watches My Little Pony. I'm on Rainbow Dash.

Hello ponies
Look at your town, now look at mine. Now back at your town, now back to mine.
Sadly, your town isn't me. But if you stopped bickering and started actually being friends, it could be like mine.
Look down, back up. Where are you? You're in Celestia's palace with the horse your town could be like!

Adam West Batman, and the 80s versions of GI Joe and Transformers all come on in a two hour block on the same channel, and MIB the Series, Deltora Quest and Batman Beyond are on in the mornings and afternoons. I actually love the idea of an extraordinarily vain character who is not only not-greedy, but whose primary character trait, even hedging out vanity to a close second, is generosity. That could be so amazing.

My only problem with Rarity is just that, the few acts of generosity she has actually shown, are immediately rendered moot and pointless by the show. For example (and there are few to begin with), in the second episode, with Rarity giving up her tail so they could get past the river monster thing. That would have been this big, awesome, character defining thing, except that five minutes later she just gets her tail back and there are no consequences whatsoever.

If she'd actually had to grow her tail back the hard way, it would've meant something, and I'd like her character a lot more (she might actually have been able to push past Angel for my favorite).

DeltaEmil
2011-01-31, 07:42 PM
Blame magic for regrowing her mane.

Also, she wants to marry the nephew of their living goddess to become royalty and tries to sweet-talk a full-grown dragon capable of eating little ponies in one bite into giving out his horde to her. Even if she wasn't generous, she'd still be my favorite little (unicorn-)pony, just for the stunt with the dragon. Only the Great and Powerful Trixie could come close to her.

PhantomFox
2011-01-31, 07:51 PM
I think the main point is that she did it in the first place without the expectation of getting it back. Getting her tail back was something of a reward for her sacrifice.

After thinking about it, the main reason we haven't seen much of her generosity, is that she hasn't starred in much. Just the pilot and Think Before You Sleep are the two episodes that come to mind that featured her beyond a scene or two. That being said, I'm interested to see where the next episode does with her.

Description from wikipedia:
"Suited for Success": Rarity becomes overwhelmed by details as she makes party dresses for her friends.

Sounds like it has potential. A blurb for a future episode also seems to indicate she'll have a larger role.
"Rarity disrupts a race while enjoying her new wings (courtesy of Twilight's magic) and watching Rainbow Dash compete."

However, until she grows a tad more, she's down at the bottom of my favorite ponies, for the moment.. (I don't think I ever expected to say that phrase)
I think my list goes:
1) Twilight (I love a good snarker)
2) Applejack (Good sensible girl. Hard working and practical)
3) Pinkie Pie (She defies physics whenever she gets excited. I love goofball personalities.)
4) Rainbow Dash (Awesome, but a bit full of herself)
5) Fluttershy (Adorable, if timid. On the other hand, we've seen her face down a cussin' dragon)
6) Rarity (See above)

Xefas
2011-01-31, 08:08 PM
I think the main point is that she did it in the first place without the expectation of getting it back. Getting her tail back was something of a reward for her sacrifice.

That's not really a reward; that's a negation of consequence. Rarity didn't grow at all, there was no character growth; she was given an opportunity to grow and show strength of character and be very interesting, and then it was all just hand-waved away.

I'd like to allude to something else to continue my point, but I don't really know what movies/shows you like, so let me substitute this:

It would be like if [Insert Character You Like Who Was Interesting Because They Sacrificed Something And Then Grew As A Person Because of Their Sacrifice], mere minutes after they [Insert That Sacrifice That They Did], immediately had that sacrifice negated, and thus all of that character growth you've come to know and love never happened. [Insert Event That Happened As A Result of the Consequences Of the Character's Sacrifice] would have never happened. Do you really think it would've been as good that way?

(I'm hoping that one day, once we get ubiquitous computing down, there'll just be a "poignant allusion" script that you can run that pulls info from the reader/listener's mind and constructs the perfect reference for them to understand what you mean)

DeltaEmil

Also: New episode, so I'll say what I said there.
I found out that I DO get the HUB afterall, so I managed to catch most of today's episode. It's refreshing to see Rarity in a more sympathetic light. And her over the top dramatics is always funny with me, since she doesn't go into The Libby territory.
(Have you noticed I like to trope a lot?)
I'm a bit confused about the message though. Perhaps its solution was in the first few minutes I missed. Was the supposed goal for Rarity to please her friends, or make the best thing she could? Artistic integrity vs. The Customer Is Always Right? A couple ponies seemed a tad OOC pushy a bit during the redesign (Pinkie, I'm looking at you. Perhaps she got caught up in the excitement.)

Rarity was just making a kind offer to her friends by making them all dresses making the "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" aesop at the end really appropriate.
There is also an amusing element of value a professional's opinion in there as well.

The soundtrack in this episode was the greatest yet.

From the musical number to the fashion show beat to the epic fanfares... It was, as Rainbow would probably say, 20% cooler than anything else.

A nice episode, overall. Rarity seems to be the only sane pony in the group, which led to the episode being more of a group study than a character specific story. I like these episodes where we learn a little about each pony the most, though. Really shows the group dynamics in a way that some of the single-pony focused episodes don't.

The toys separately are $1.96 each. I have not seen nor heard of a person having to buy the meal to get the toy for... About 15 years now, anywhere. Not since the pokemon toys came out at burger king.

I asked for one of each. I'm afraid these three are all they have (certainly they are all that was on the display poster). Fair warning to anyone with pets; ponies must look delicious. I showed my cat Twilight Sparkle and he sniffed her for all of 1.5 seconds...

... Before her entire head disappeared into his mouth. The kittens were more accommodating, with one of them stealing Rainbow Dash to add her to my heroscape figureshis collection of zombies under the bed somewhere.

Now that I think about it, he's got some of my dice too. Cute little menace...

Which 3 do they currently have? :smallconfused:

My only problem with Rarity is just that, the few acts of generosity she has actually shown, are immediately rendered moot and pointless by the show. For example (and there are few to begin with), in the second episode, with Rarity giving up her tail so they could get past the river monster thing. That would have been this big, awesome, character defining thing, except that five minutes later she just gets her tail back and there are no consequences whatsoever
see, this is only an issue from a meta-plot perspective. In character, it shows a lot of conviction to generosity to literally give someone the shirt off your back. or tail off your butt in this instance. Having been there, it's a painful thing to give up something else that resides on your first tier of priorities (I'm assuming Rarity places personal grooming on the same level as her generosity) for a first tier priority- No matter how much or how little the consequences will seem or be afterwards. Yes, getting her tail back takes the bite out of it for us the viewers (and even for a little kids show, thu would have been better off giving her a long tail in the pilot and having it cut down to where they wanted her char.model to be) but Rarity has no clue about this.
For comparison, you could say that someone giving half their paycheck to charity is no less generous if they win the lottery tomorrow (or even yesterday).

For comparison, you could say that someone giving half their paycheck to charity is no less generous if they win the lottery tomorrow (or even yesterday).

I'm not really talking about how "generous" the act was or not. I'm talking about the magnitude of the emotions the action generated.

If you give half your paycheck to charity, and then have to live off ramen for the next month, and your cable and internet get shut off because you can't pay the bill, and you're constantly confronted with things you want to buy but can't because of the act of generosity you performed, then I'm going to feel for you. I'm going to empathize with you. Your situation is going to evoke a lot of emotion in me.

If you give half your paycheck to charity, and then five minutes later, you win a billion dollars, then I don't care about you at all. Why would I? I might have cared about you for those five minutes, but now there's no reason for me to. You're fine.

Hell, same goes for if you only got the exact same amount of money that you gave away, which is more synonymous with what happened to Rarity. The net loss for you is nothing, and the repercussions were nothing, and the interest is nothing.

I do believe that people would also be happy for the generous person if good fortune had befallen him or her. Especially if that generous person still continues to be generous.

Rarity kind of implies that it will be for free at the beginning of the episode. I mean, she says she'll make dresses for Pinkie and Fluttershy without even asking them... maybe they just added the line 'cause it sounded nice?

Comet
2011-02-05, 03:41 PM
It didn't cost her friends anything, but Rarity herself had to get the material from somewhere, no? That all adds up and, since Rarity is loathe to go overboard unlike her insane friends, she has to consider how much she's willing to spend on each dress while still making them the best ever.

NOTICE: mcdonalds just gave me (via proxy) a Rarity and a Princess Celestia. They did not have these ponies before!

So anyone wanting an Applejack, RainbowDash or Twilight Sparkle would do well to get them now, while they still have some left-over stock from "last week". If my childhood understanding of happy meal toy rotation is still valid, that is.

Celestia does not spare. Had she seen the town and all the horror, Twilight & friends would've spent a month in the Fabulous Dungeons of Canterlot. Fluttershy's punishment for introducing the parasprites would be... well, let's just say that she'd be pitied even by Luna.

Interesting points:
- Falling heavy objects justified! Derpy sighting (with derpy eyes)
- Twilight gets up on an actual soap box to do a soapbox rant
- Twilight is the butt-monkey of this episode, poor twilight
- She also gets her share of Amusing Injuries. Shakes off that cast pretty quickly though.
- Fluttershy has gotten better about jumping over crevasse. She even referenced Hop Skip and Jump from Dragonshy
- "What would a brave pony like Rainbow Dash do? CHARGE!!!" Yup, that's what Rainbow would do all right.
- Pinkie twitching all over the place will make some interesting gifs
- The leap of faith was an actual leap.
- Someponies might raise an eyebrow at the moral. Hope it doesn't get out of hand.
- Celestia also has twitchy sense? Huh.

I guess it's hard to put a character in peril when she has magical tricks up the wazoo. I wish I knew the limits to what Twilight can and can not do. Either that, or she was too panicked to think to use it. Stressful situations can do that. Perhaps a weak justification, but it serves well enough.

That said, I enjoyed it. It skated on thin ice, and it can be easily misinterpreted to say something different than what I guess was intended, but overall it was innocuous enough to be enjoyable.

Funniest episode ever. This is more of slap-stick comedy instead of the normal pseudo-educational fun adventures in "Friendship is Magic", and I also like it very much. It's a nice change of the normal routine. Sure, Twilight Sparkle is perhaps a little bit more "Nu-uh, I'm a skeptic like Skully" than normal, and Pinkie Pie is... well, pinky-twitchy (and she has a pet alligator... with no teeth, hah). I doubt that we're going to see that twitchy-stuff again, but nonetheless, one heck of an entertaining episode for sure.
Also, "Derpy Hoves" with derpy eyes... It seems that she works at a moving firm. Hah...

And I think that when Twilight was exploding, she kinda looked like that fire pony pokémon (I think it's called Ponyta or something like that).

I'm all but certain that the people involved in making this have come into contact with Ponyta and/or Rapiddash before through one means or another. I believe the Powerpuff girls, while not a direct time-slot competitor with pokemon.... like, ever, was in the same era at the first incarnation of the show for American audiences... And it does seem like the thing to do when one is making children's programming to keep abreast of what other shows are doing/have done.

So I believe that even if it was not an active.. inspiration, it had some subconscious effect.

I think I vaguely remember a Pikachu like toy as part of the background in the Powerpuff Girls. They definitely owned a Nintendo 64, as did the Mayor - at one point he is clearly playing Ocarina of Time (he manages to skewer Navi). I certainly wouldn't put it past them to put a Ponyta reference into My Little Pony.
