Totems of the First High Shaman
The totems of the first high shaman are a set of sacred items that enhance the spellcasting ability of the wearer, allowing you to defeat magical resistant creatures, provide aid to your companions, and increasing the versatility and endurance of your power.

The totems of the first high shaman are most useful to arcane spellcasters that have a limited knowledge of spells or limited spells per day, typically sorcerers, wizards, and wu jens. Other arcane spellcasters, such as beguilers or warmage, can not use the runestaff, but the other pieces of the set are still valuable to them.

Lore: Characters who have ranks in Knowledge (arcana), or who have the bardic knowledge ability, can research the totems of the grand shaman to learn more about these items. When a character succeeds on a check, the following lore is revealed, including the information from lower DC's.

DC 15: Tales of the totems of the first high shaman reach far back into the history of the barbaric tribes. Each tribe had their own witch man or woman, a shaman, that provided for the supernatural and spiritual needs of the tribes. Ages ago one shaman grew to such power that he left his tribe and named himself High Shaman of all the tribes, devoting his life to the protection of all the tribes instead of a single one. The first high shaman created his totems to help him in dealing with the dangerous beasts the tribes fought and to aid in his dealings with the tribes.

DC 20: The name of the first high shaman is lost to history, but it is known that he was a powerful sorcerer and that he created each totem himself. He hunted down and defeated a rakshasha in order to preserve it's eye, but the high shaman did not know that the rakshash lived after the battle. Hurt and angered over the loss of his eye the rakshasha planned a trap for the high shaman, spreading rumors of a powerful animal in the jungle whose bones the high shaman could use to carve the staff he desired. The rakshasha ambused the high shaman and killed him while the high shaman was hunting the beast.

DC 25: The rakshasha did not know that the high shaman was not hunting alone. The high shaman's apprentice watched from hiding and did not go to aid his master, because the apprentice secretly desired the death of the high shaman. When the rakshasha had killed the high shaman the apprentice struck, killing the wounded rakshasha. The apprentice took the totems from the dead high shaman and carved the thigh bone of the dead rakshasha into the staff that his dead master had desired.

The totems of the first high shaman have been passed down from high shaman to apprentice for years, sometimes through violence, others through retirement. Others have copied the totems and given them as gifts to lesser shamans. The totems are said to hold the spirits of all the past grand shamans and they whisper secrets and tales at night to whoever possess a complete set.

Collection Benefits: Possessing multiple pieces of the totems of the first high shaman allows you to surpass magical defenses, enhance your own spells and grants you wisdom from the whispered tales of the dead high mages.

2 pieces: The magic of the totems infuses your own spells with additional power. Once per day when you fail to penetrate a creatures spell resistance you may reroll the spell resistance check with an additional +2 bonus.
3 pieces: You can use the Sudden Extend metamagic feat once per day.
4 pieces: The spirits of the past grand shamans within the totems whisper to you at night in your dreams. These tales and stories allow you to make any Knowledge check untrained and allow you to make a bardic knowledge check three times per day, using your character level in place of bard levels.
