View Full Version : The great search for household fey

Looking for random illustrations/photo manipulations of fairies, sprites, spirits, small gods, whatever you wanna call it peaking out from things, sweeping, playing pranks, attacking, sneaking etc.

Yes, I know of the domovoi and the house elves. Only ones I can find. Something besides them preferably.

Google image and deviantart aren't being very helpful with my keywords :smallfrown:

The definition of the term "brownie" seems a bit muddled on exactly what they are/do but all versions I've heard at least refer to them as some kind of fairy that has some tying into your home. You may try searching with that name (though probably phrase it along the lines of "brownie fairy" to avoid getting pictures of baked goods) and see if you get any useful results.

Slightly off-topic but do you mind if I ask what you're gathering these pictures for?

So you're searching for any pictures, not just supposedly real stuff, yes?

I've found something like that:

Also, tried kikimora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kikimora)?

Has interesting picture.

Inspiration for a class I've entered in the monthly PrC contest in the homebrew forums.

Can see it here: The Goodwife (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10002550#post10002550)

Either one would be fine by me. It's funny, but I found that pic myself years ago when I ran a monster-making competition :smallwink:

The things is that while indeed there's about ton of words for such creatures in any language ever, it's hard to find many interesting pictures... :smalleek:

Pasting "bannik" into google provided me that:

Supposed to be creature that was haunting the bathing places, obviously...

Does anyone recognize the runes in the top left? They look like Dwarf runes from LotR... just wondering :smalltongue:

Well, it doesn't seem to be Futhark, unless I've forgotten several of them.

Edit:
Also not Tolkien's Cirth. Closest:

On a related topic, trying to recall a quote. Something about how to call forth elves or somesuch.

Something like, 'By ash, yew and oak'. Ring a bell?

Also looking for sayings of that sort.

Three magical woods, so probably Germanic mytholgy somewhere. However, I thought those served to banish them, at least ash.

Edit: my only google/Wikipedia result is a book series called "The Oak, Yew, Ash and Rowan Cycle", by Andre Norton. Probably not helpful.

Though Rowan has a lot to do with spirits: staffs are made out of it, and it keeps spirits away.

Found some little site.

2,3,4 will be 'household' I guess.

Pictures are kinda small.

Ah, you just don't know the magic words. Try searching for 'Brian Froud' and you will find all you need and more.

For example:

"By oak, ash, and thorn," perhaps?

Yup, that was it. Actually already worked that into an ability :smallwink:
