Is there a way buy which a character might transform themselves into an object rather than a creature, for instance could a wizard cast a spell to turn one of his party into a sword so that another could weild him and then back again at the end of the battle.

Flesh to Stone (or Salt, or Ice, or Glass Strike), then Shrink item.
I wouldn't know of anything that turns someone into a sword, though.

Well the sword is just an example, in this example any weapon the weilder was proficient in would suffice

Polymorph Any Object is the only spell I know of in core that can transform a person into an object. Metamorphosis works for psionics, but it's self-only.

I don't think there's any lower level version of polymorph any object. Also, you should remember that if you turn a creature (such as a PC) into an object, he/she/it loses all their mental stats, and is an average, run-of-the-mill version of that object.

Step 1: Be a Warforged
Step 2: Use Alter Self
Step 3: Profit!

There's also the Morph Ball trick (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128988). Add the Morphing property, turn the party's monk into something *useful* for a change.

As said before me: The easist is to do this:
1. Play a construct.
2. Then use alter self.
3. Choose animated item as your form.
4. Choose item.

DM fiat works just fine too. :smallcool:

A group I was DM'ing found a magic staff that seemed to take actions by itself sometimes and eventually started talking to them. They didn't find out til later that it was a polymorphed Couatl who was keeping an eye on them and eventually recruited them to help stop BBEG.

If you have the ability to gain the Ex abilities of creatures you change into such as from Master of Many forms, Master Transmogrifist or the Shapechange spell, you could always change into a Mimic (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/mimic.htm)

It would only work for the character that had it, but there's an urban druid variant that gains the ability to wild shape into animated objects.
