Electronic rpg mapping tool

Fellow play grounders I have recently acquired a new TV with a vga hook up. IM looking to move beyond my plastic gaming mat and move to a more efficient electronic version.

Does anyone know any good free gaming tools for either square or hex board.

I believe most use Maptools, I'm a pen and mat guy myself though - but might be worth checking out.
