Looking for a movie. Can't remember title.

The premise of the movie was that this kid was severely injured and left for dead in a sewer or drainage system or something. For a while he thinks he's completely dead, then a bird of some sort is in the same situation and he finds out he isn't quite without hope. I seem to recall him trying to later kill himself a couple times, and the song "I will follow you into the dark" playing at some point.

Can anybody tell me what this movie is?
