Not sure if this should be posted here or in the general Roleplaying game forum. Oh well.

Is it possible to make a system like Ars Magica spellcasting work with D&D 4E? I can't see a way to make it work well. Anyone have a clue?

Thanks in advance!

You could make the Ars Magica type system only function with long casting times, thereby taking out of combat. Then you wouldn't even have to link it specifically with any specific classes or power sources. This is the way that you can avoid messing with class balance. You could give all of characters a shot at the some of the ars magica style power outside of combat and avoid creating any other balance issues.

Just to be clear you're talking about an emasculated, curtailed ars magica system without mystery initiation, original research, or many of the different laboratory activities right? What's beautiful about 4th ed to me is the complex interactions of character abilities. If you add all of the wonderful freedom of Ars magic system you'd take this away. If you want to have the freedom of Ars magica with its exquisitely detailed character advancement and laboratory rules you're much better off making tweaks to Ars magica to get what you want than you are importing Ars bits into a foreign game.
