(This is a new, fairly high procedure thread; please read the entire instructions carefully before posting. Thanks.)

Ever have a simple, straight-forward rules question that you can’t figure out the answer to? Ask it here. No question is too simple. No more worrying about whether your question is “worth” starting a thread. Ask here and receive an answer. You are, of course, welcome to start a thread for your question, and if you think your question is subject to many interpretations or will start a debate, you are encouraged to start a new thread for it.

This thread will serve as a catch-all for simple, discreet questions that can be answered quickly according to the RAW (Rules As Written).

If your question is about real world weapons and armor ask it here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1149238581 ;start=0#0).
If your question is about homebrew rulings start a thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=homebrew).
If you are looking for the meaning of an acronym or abbreviation look here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1121064702 ;start=0#0).
You may want to skim the post below to see if your question has already been asked and answered.

The Procedure:

Do:
Label your questions with bold Q#s.
Label your answers with the bold Q# that you are responding to and/or quote the question.
Be sure that your answer is correct before you post it; if you are the least bit uncertain, just let it pass and get the next one.
Try to give your answers in as clear and straightforward terms as possible.
Feel free to quote or link to relevant rules in the SRD, Errata, or FAQ that supports your answer. (You may want to give your answer and then modify it to add support – otherwise someone else may answer while you’re assembling yours.)
Specify if your question is for a system other than D&D (the default for this thread).

Don’t:
Ask Homebrew rules questions here.
Ask trick questions or attempt to “stump the panel,” so to speak.
Answer a question that’s already been answered.
Offer contradictions, clarifications, exceptions, or extensions of prior answers unless, in your opinion the answer give is plainly and completely wrong.
Post to debate the answers given.
Post to carry on other conversations whether tangentially related or wholly unrelated.

Dispute Resolution Procedure:
If you dispute someone’s answer – meaning that they got it wrong in a critical fashion – post your answer and suggest that the original questioner start a thread to discuss it further if they want it hashed out.
If someone disputes your answer, don’t respond. Just wait to see if the original questioner starts a new thread to discuss it.
If your question leads to a disputed answer, start a new thread if you’d like it discussed further.

Here are some sample questions. “Bad” questions just mean they should be asked in their own thread where you can get many answers and opinions. “Good” questions just mean that these are the types of questions that are amenable to a quick straightforward answer (probably).

Sample “Bad” Questions:
How do I play D&D? (Great question, but not for this thread.)
What is a good 10 level TWF build? (Far too broad and requires much opinion)
What +2 LA race should I take for my sorcerer build? (Again, an opinion question)

Sample “Good” Questions:
Q.1. Are there any Large +0 LA races?
Q.2. As a sorcerer/rogue, do I get to add sneak attack damage to my attack spells?
Q.3 What effect would Dispel Magic have on a golem or similar construct?
Q.4. Is there a feat that allows me to get a familiar?
Q.5. Where can I find this “Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil” everyone is talking about?

{Feel free to have at these sample questions as a test run. If you have any comments about how this thread could be improved please PM me.}

Q.1. Are there any Large +0 LA races?
No (At least in the PHB, DMG, MMs, Complete line, Races of line, BoED, UA, FRCS, MoF, LoD, RoF, SM, Und, PGF, or EbCS)

Q.2. As a sorcerer/rogue, do I get to add sneak attack damage to my attack spells?
Yes. Well, it depends. The spell has to have an attack roll, and deal damage - the sneak attack damage is of the same type as the spell.

Q.3. What effect would Dispel Magic have on a golem or similar construct? There are no special effects upon the Construct Type - it functions exactly as a Dispel Magic upon any other creature. "You can use dispel magic to end ongoing spells that have been cast on a creature or object, to temporarily suppress the magical abilities of a magic item, to end ongoing spells (or at least their effects) within an area, or to counter another spellcaster’s spell."

Q.4. Is there a feat that allows me to get a familiar?Yup. Item Familiar (UA170) and Obtain Familiar (CArc81). Note that Item Familiar only gives, well, item familiars, and Obtain Familiar has a prerequisite of 3 levels of arcane spellcasting, and know arcana.

Q.5. Where can I find this “Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil” everyone is talking about?CArc44

Q.7. All sources stack. At least all, damage reduction of the same type (x/-).

See this example at the end of the srd entry,

Finally, a frost giant has a +9 natural armor bonus, so it gains DR 1/- from natural armor. The chain shirt it wears gives it an additional DR 2/-. If the frost giant were a 7th-level barbarian, the barbarian class levels would give it DR 1/-. These three values add up to DR 4/-. The giant’s AC would be 20 (10, +8 natural armor bonus, +2 chain shirt)

Q9

Yes, you can quicken eldrich blast, but you cannot qualify for the quicken spell-like ability feat for eldrich blast until level 26. You can only quicken a spell-like ability with a spell level equal to your effective caster level divided by two minus four, and since eldrich blast increases in caster level every other level until it's a 9th level spell you will be unable to apply the quicken spell-like ability feat to it until after it's a 9th level spell (it's impossible to meet the prereqs for its current spell level before it advances to a new spell level.)

In light of errata I was not aware of...

Yes, you could quicken eldrich blast, you would have to be level 6 to take the feat. However if you apply a blast shape or eldrich essence invocation that changes the spell level of the blast you'd have to recalculate to see if you are a high enough level to quicken the eldrich blast with it's new spell level.

Using hideous blow is part of the standard action you use to make the melee attack vs your foe thus you cannot take a 5 foot step between casting hideous blow and making your melee attack. However you can still make a 5ft step before or after the standard action it takes to use hideous blow+attack following the normal rules for making 5ft steps.

Errata makes the Eldritch Blast always the equivalent of a first-level spell (then modified by blast invocations, etc).

Let's see what I can come up with...

Q11: What kind of bonuses stack togheter?

Directly from the SRD

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm

"In most cases, modifiers to a given check or roll stack (combine for a cumulative effect) if they come from different sources and have different types (or no type at all), but do not stack if they have the same type or come from the same source (such as the same spell cast twice in succession). If the modifiers to a particular roll do not stack, only the best bonus and worst penalty applies. Dodge bonuses and circumstance bonuses however, do stack with one another unless otherwise specified."

I and some other people answered it here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1151550535 ;start=11#11).

Apparently the "+2" bonuses from good save progressions still stack with these rules. I thought they would not but I never held a copy of Unearthed Arcana in my hands.

In short, a way of actually breaking the game involving a kobold, Serpent Kingdoms, and various cheese. It was never meant as an actual character and should not be used as such.

Q. 15 answer: The racial hit dice are equivalent to a level each and then there is a LA on top of that, +2 for an afflicted and +3 for natural. According to Races of Fearun, it's 1 less than that, so be aware that there are contradictory sources.

Q.16.
Not to debate this, but the MM 3.5 states (pg 178 );

"Level Adjustment: Same as the base creature +2 (afflicted) or +3 (natural). In addition, a lycanthrope's character level is increased by the number of racial Hit Dice the base animal has."

So that would make a were-bear a total of +9 to character level (+3 for being a lycanthrope & +6 for the bears HD).

I'm guessing this is to balance out a lycanthrope, because different animals are stronger than others.

After having a debate with some friends… My question is,

Q.13.What rolls or checks have a natural 20 and a fail 1.
Attacks and saves automatically succeed on a natural 20, and automatically fail on a natural 1. Skills and ability checks count these numbers as normal.

Note that in the case of attacks, a 20 automatically hits, but does not automatically crit. It is, however, a threat, and will trigger a confirmation roll on any valid target, which will succeed automatically on a 20 or fail automatically on a 1.

Further note that weapons with threat ranges greater than 1 (19-20, 18-20, etc.) still only hit automatically on a 20. It is possible to roll a critical threat with these weapons and still miss the target (eg. a character using a scimitar rolls a natural 18, which is a threat, but it only modifies out to a 19, and the opponent has AC 20, meaning the character still misses).

It's mostly DM fiat at this point, but I'd say that you could "milk" about one use per day out of a snake, and it wouldn't be able to use its venom for the rest of the day. In addition, the venom would probably have a decay rate. I'd say it stayed potent for about three days at most.

From the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#maximizeSpell):

"An empowered, maximized spell gains the separate benefits of each feat: the maximum result plus one-half the normally rolled result."

So an empowered, maximized fireball would deal 1/2 * (10d6) + 60 damage.

I'm not exactly sure if the distribution would work out such that 1/2 * (10d6) is statistically identical to 5d6 (as per your example), though. I doubt they are, but I'd like to confirm it.

Any creature with an Int score of 3 or higher can gain class levels, but for any creature whose advancement is not listed as being by class level, it is of course the exception rather than the rule.

But under CR it states

Combat Reflexes [General]
Benefit
You may make a number of additional attacks of opportunity equal to your Dexterity bonus.

With this feat, you may also make attacks of opportunity while flat-footed.

A character without this feat can make only one attack of opportunity per round and can’t make attacks of opportunity while flat-footed.

Assuming that the character had his weapon in hand and was aware of the creature before the attack, then yes. Though he would be considered flat-footed for the attack, Combat Reflexes does allow him to make attacks of opportunity as normal.

Note that a character cannot make attacks of opportunity on a creature that has total concealment in relation to him (ie. an invisible creature, or any creature if the character is question has been blinded). Also, if the character is completely unaware of the attacker before the attack resolves (eg. he failed an opposed Spot check to notice the attacker, who made a Hide check with a -20 modifier), then the character does not get an attack of opportunity (you don't threaten things you aren't aware of).

On a final note, in this example the character would only get one attack of opportunity, assuming that the attack made was a normal one. A creature can only provoke one attack of opportunity per round from another character due to leaving a space threatened by that character (even if that character has Combat Reflexes).

EDIT: By the way, if the attacker in the above example is moving and attacking, then it isn't acting in a surprise round, since you may only take one standard action in a surprise round.

Partial charge into a grapple.
In that case, the attacker technically could have provoked two attacks of opportunity - it depends on whether or not the character with Combat Reflexes is using a spiked chain (And if not, why not? It is by far the best weapon for such builds.).

If the character with Combat Reflexes threatens the squares immediately adjacent to himself (many reach weapons do not, creating a sort of "donut" effect in regards to threatened area), then he would get two attacks of opportunity - one for the attacker leaving a threatened square during its partial charge, and one for initiating a grapple (also assuming the creature didn't have Improved Grapple or Improved Grab).

I made one more assumption, that the character has at least a +1 Dexterity modifier, which I would expect for any character built around reach weapons.

The lowest I am aware of is the half-ogre, which has LA +2 and no racial hit die. The 3.5 version can be found in Races of Destiny.

Just in case you are only concerned with weapon use, the goliaths (Races of Stone) have a +1 adjustment, no racial hit dice, powerful build (count as large for wielding weapons), and some ability modifiers that may count as mimicking an enlarge person effect. They don't get reach, unfortunately.

A. 34: Duskblades get to cast 2nd level spells at level 5, so you need at least 5 levels of Duskblade. Assuming an Intelligence of 14 (not unreasonable), you can get Know (Arcana), Know (History), and Know (Religion) at 2 ranks a piece at first level and still put 4 into Concentration. By the time you hit Duskblade 5, you can have Concentration 8, 1 short.

Next, 1 level of Warblade will get you three maneuvers (more than you need for the Jade Phoenix Mage), and one Stance (just enough). Take Sapphire Nightmare Blade, Moment of Perfect Mind, Leading the Attack, and Stonefoot Stance. Plus, Concentration is a class skill, so drop one of your (assumed) six skill points into it.

A.39 Only for bard music. Via feats such as (insert feat that lets music affect undead) and "Music of the Gods[Epic]" which lets bardic music ignore all mental immunities.

"I'm not exactly sure if the distribution would work out such that 1/2 * (10d6) is statistically identical to 5d6 (as per your example), though. I doubt they are, but I'd like to confirm it."
To confirm, in order to be technically accurate, you must roll 10d6 and divide by 2: the variance is much smaller than 5d6 (just as 2d6/2 does not distribute evenly, whereas 1d6 does). However, it would not be inappropriate to approximate this to 5d6, as the mean and the bounds are the same. The only catch is that rounding error will leave the 60+5d6 fireball very slightly better off if rounding down.

Q40: If a weapon's material gives it X HP per inch of thickness, how many hitpoints does it have? (how thick are weapons for that purpose?)

A40: The table Common Armor, Weapon, and Shield Hardness and Hit Points (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm#tableCommonArmorWeaponAndShieldHar dnessAndHitPoints) gives us some values to start with.

For example, a medium one handed blade has hardness 10 and 5 hp. The common one handed blade is made of either iron or steel, both of which have hardness 10, and 30hp per inch of thickness.

So it looks like you divide by 6.
Admantine is explicitly stated to have 1/3rd more hp than normal. Which means an admantine one handed blade would have hardness 20, and 6hp (or rather, 6.6 repeating). This is exactly the same as 40/6, interestingly enough.

A heavy steel shield is hardness 10, 20hp. Which translates into 2/3rds of an inch of thickness. Admantine heavy shields have 26hp (26.6 repeating). 2/3rds of 40 is in fact 26.6, which means this means of extrapolation holds for those two materials and items. As the other materials don't mention HP specifically, I would theorize that this method of extrapolation works for all the listed common items.

Other metals and items can be likewise extrapolated.

Melee combat while mounted is the same as non-mounted where movement is concerned (move action + 1 attack, etc.), ranged combat is different, you can shoot or thow from a horse independently from its movement. If I read the Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values table correctly, anything other than 'at will' has a price modifier, so 'at will' is the default you'd get out of the table.

It must be noted however, that these are purely guidelines and that one could create very powerful items way too cheap.

Well, what I was missing was the base cost for "at will" but I found it (by crossreferencing Hand of the mage (900 gp) with the table). The base price is under "command word".

As the feat cannot raise your effective druid level above your character level, this feat is in my opinion meant for multiclassing druids, like Practiced Spellcaster.

This is explicitly what the wording of the feat was designed to prevent.

You cant get higher than your ECL for your effective druid level via this feat.

When you get an advanced animal companion such as a dire bear, you only treat your druid level as lower for the purposes of finding benefits, It does not actualy get any lower.

PinkysBrain
2006-08-25, 07:10 PM
A47: Natural weapons when used as secondary attacks occur at your full attack bonus with a -5 penalty (or -2 with multiattack) and do not interfere with your primary attack(s). They do 1/2 strength damage and they don't grant additional attacks for high BAB. The rules for natural weapons are all over the place, but they are mainly found in the MM glossary entries for natural weapons and manufactured weapons.

So you would get one extra attack at your highest attack bonus with a -5 penalty which would deal 1d6 + 1/2 strength.

Q48 How does two weapon fighting stack with rapid shot?

A PC of mine wants to dual weild hand crossbows. With two weapon fighting you get an attack from each hand at -2. If you rapid shot with one of those hands, you'd get an additional -2. The player says that that would leave him at -2/-4/-4 but I think the rapid shot rules say that all attacks suffer a penalty, which leads me to think its -4/-4/-4.

It seems like this would depend on whether you gain attacks for rapid shot or TWF first. I'm not aware of any rules for figuring out what order your feats come in, though it makes sense to me intuitively that TWF would apply before rapid shot, as TWF is a fighting style while rapid shot is a single maneuver.

The SRD (http://d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#crossbowHand) Wrote:
Crossbow, Hand

You can draw a hand crossbow back by hand. Loading a hand crossbow is a move action that provokes attacks of opportunity.

You can shoot, but not load, a hand crossbow with one hand at no penalty. You can shoot a hand crossbow with each hand, but you take a penalty on attack rolls as if attacking with two light weapons.
Emphasis mine. Since rapid reload does not mention wether you need more or less hands while reloading, you use the original rules for the weapon.
You could use TWF and rapid shot with a Repeating Crossbow, but not with two regular hand crossbows.

Addition:
If your player were to use two repeating hand crossbows, he would get three attacks at -4,-4,-4 because:

Rapid Shot (http://d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#rapidShot) says:
...The attack is at your highest base attack bonus, but each attack you make in that round (the extra one and the normal ones) takes a -2 penalty...
emphasis mine; and
Two-Weapon Fighting (http://d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#twoWeaponFighting) says:
...You suffer a -6 penalty with your regular [/i]attack or attacks[/i] with your primary hand and a -10 penalty to the attack with your off hand when you fight this way...

In other words, both TWF and Rapid Shot say that the penalty applies to all attacks made that round.

Crossbow, Repeating

The repeating crossbow (whether heavy or light) holds 5 crossbow bolts. As long as it holds bolts, you can reload it by pulling the reloading lever (a free action). ...

You can fire a repeating crossbow with one hand or fire a repeating crossbow in each hand in the same manner as you would a normal crossbow of the same size. However, you must fire the weapon with two hands in order to .use the reloading lever, and you must use two hands to load a new case of bolts.

Emphasis mine. It doesn't work. Period. From a theoretical standpoint ^ is correct. All the penalties apply. IF it worked.

Q50 When you apply templates, they each have certian creature types that they can be applied to, hereafter refered to as the 'base creature'. If that creature type changes, does the template also stay? I.e. If a vampire makes it to monk20, he no longer is a valid target for the vampire template. Does it stay, or does it fall off? I can't see where it says it.

Usually when a creature's type changes, it acquires the "augmented [previous type]" subtype. This keeps them eligable for templates and such. (This is also what happens to the creatures you summon via Summon Nature's Ally if you have the Augment Summoning feat and also the druid's Animal Companion.)

Your specific example is different, the Perfect Self (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/monk.htm#perfectSelf) class feature does not actually change the monk's type, the monk is only considered an outsider for the purpose of spells and magical effects.

But if something happened to a creature with a template that would change that creatures' type to something that can not qualify for that template, I don't know what happens then RAW, but this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#sizeandType) is some interesting reading anyway.

Yes they can: Improving Monsters - Monsters and Class Levels (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#monstersAndClassLevels). This entry does not mention the minimal intelligenge of 3 for taking class levels, a limit I am quite sure exists. But that won't be a problem for an awakened animal.

I do smell some druid cheese though; if you are intending to use such a creature as an animal companion, you'd have to go back and read the Animal Companion class feature again.

I'm not sure if it's published elsewhere, but Savage Species established an heirarchy of creature types. When applying templates, one type would trump another. Using this heirarchy, a Dragon could undergo a process that normally turns a creature into a Fey, but since the Dragon creature type is above the Fey creature type, it would remain a Dragon.

Your example of the Vampire Monk is a bit tricky, since Undead and Outsider both occupy the same level in the heirarchy. From the wording of the description, though, I think it would remain undead. It could certainly gain the DR from Perfect Self, though.

As to the Augmented Subtype, it just says that an Augmented creature has the features (HD, BAB, Saves, and Skills) of the former type, and the traits (everything else) of the current type. It doesn't state that augmented cratures retain their elegibility for templates or anything else of the sort. It seems to me to largely be a way of saying that the Outsider (augmented humanoid) doesn't get darkvision just because he turned into an outsider—the effect that transformed him has to grant that seperately.

Force damage, such as from the magic missile spell is not affected by damage reduction of any type. As a general rule, all spell damage is unaffected by DR unless the spell specifically says the spell deals physical damage and/or slashing, piercing, or blugeoning damage.

In fact, force damage is known to be one of the hardest damage types to avoid, as it works fully on incorporeal and etheral targets in addition to the fact that there is energy resistance for force (as force isn't an energy type), and force effects usually do not allow saving throws (though they often allow Spell Resistance).

The_Logic_Ninja
2006-08-30, 04:02 AM
A63: No. Enhancement bonuses, as their name implies, enhance other bonuses: fullplate with a +1 enhancement bonus has its +8 Armor bonus enhanced to +9. Both bracers of armor and regular armor provide armor bonuses, and only the largest armor bonus applies (the bonuses don't stack); the enhancement bonus of the armor just modifies the armor's total armor bonus to AC. A character wearing +3 Fullplate would have a +11 armor bonus to AC, regardless of whether or not he is also wearing Bracers of Armor +8. There is a list of bonus types here (http://d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#modifierTypes); it specifies which types stack (most don't--only dodge bonuses, untyped bonuses, and circumstance bonuses from different sources).

You can purchase items which give you different kinds of bonuses to AC, such as a Ring of Protection (deflection bonus) and an Amulet of Natural Armor (Natural Armor bonus). Those will stack with the Bracers of Armor.
You can also try to purchase (or craft, with the right feats) items that give different kinds of bonuses to AC (circumstance, competence, luck, et cetera) via the magic item creation guidelines that can be found here (http://d20srd.org/indexes/magicItems.htm), but these are guidelines only, and DMs are much more likely to veto such items (since the guidelines can be abused) than normal gear you want to purchase or craft.

Without any further penalties, I would count the DC for hearing a spell being cast as -10. (Same as for hearing a battle, reason behind that here (http://d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#components).)
As a +1 modifier to the listen DC is added for every 10 feet, a creature with no ranks in Listen and a wisdom of 10 or 11 can hear the spell being cast up to 300 feet away. (But would need to roll a 20, so it is not very likely.)

Spell Trigger and Spell Completion items have very specific class and / or skill requirements. The various activation types can be found here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#spellTrigger).

Q.8. - How do favored classes, experience penalties, etc. work with gestalt characters?A.8 Gestalt classes are from UA... I'm not sure if we're allowed to talk about it.

However... the simple answer is, UA does not cover favoured classes or experience penalties regarding gestalts at all.

I personally believe that when you're using this high powered variant, it becomes more or less meaningless.

A 67: Yes, he adds elemental damage and the +2 arrow enhancement bonus to all arrows that hit. But keep in mind that the highest abilities between the bow and the arrows apply, so if you fired those +2 arrows with a +2 bow there would still only be an +2 enhancement on those arrows.

Q.68 Is there anywhere other than the monster entry in the Monster Manual (or other critter book) that I can divine what armors and weapons a monster is proficient with? For example, if they list javelins (a simple weapon) under the Goblin entry, but I want to arm my goblins with short bows (a martial weapon) is this possible without the goblins taking a nonproficiency penalty?

Q.69 ("69 dude!") If a horse and rider charge a target, can both horse and rider make an attack each against the target, assuming the rider makes the "Fight with Warhorse" Ride roll?

Q.70 If two goblins are fighting a man on a horse, can they flank the man if they are on opposite sides of him? Or does the man count as being in a square 5' off the ground?

Q.71 Is there any common or low level ability that allows people or creatures to see through standard, magical Darkness? Darkness says that darkvision doesn't penetrate. Most undead, demons, devils and other creatures who have innate abilities to create darkness (as per the Darkness spell) generally have darkvision, meaning they can't see if they use their own innate ability. This seems very odd to me.

Q.72 What is the maximum distance the average person can see large objects/creatures? If a rampaging gargantuan dragon is flying through the air on a clear day with plenty of light, at what point do people see it? The Spot skill imposes a -1 penalty per 10', which would imply the ridiculous - that people wouldn't see it until it was a few hundred feet away. Can people see the sky, stars or clouds?

A68: You can determine it by their racial HD, or class levels if they have no racial HD; for example, Outsider HD provide martial weapon proficiency. You can easily arm your goblins with shortbows even if they're not proficient via HD or class levels by ruling that this particular tribe is proficient with them, as is your right.

Mounted characters count as occupying their mounts' entire space. This also means that both goblins could hit the mounted man, even without reach weapons.

A. 71

Keep in mind that Darkness no longer creates a sphere of utter opacity, and neither does Deeper Darkness. In 3.5, they create areas where shadow does strange things, granting concealment to those who want it and a 20% miss chance. So, casting Darkness in the middle of the day would grant anyone in its area a 20% miss chance against people with normal vision. However, Darkness extinguishes all magical and nonmagical light sources in its area of effect with an effective spell level of two or lower. So if you cast Darkness at a party using torches underground, those characters in the party without darkvision would have a full 50% miss chance for being completely blind, and those with darkvision would have 20% miss chance. The only RAW creatures with sight that are immune to the effects of Darkness are Ba'atezu, a subset of the Devils. Perversely, no Devil has Darkness as a spell-like ability...

The only methods I know of for characters to see through Darkness are non-RAW.

A68 Since you're the DM, anything goes. However, according to rules as written, a creature is proficient with any weapon presented in its entry.

However, the goblin is an interesting case. Since it has no racial hit dice (instead having one level of warrior), it is proficient with all simple and martial weapons.

A72. Remember, large and larger creatures get a penalty to hide checks. It wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to apply their penalty to hide checks as a bonus to spot checks instead.

That, however, doesn't exactly solve your problem, since it only increases the range of vision about 40' for a dragon. But it's what the rules say.

Q76When using a metamagic feat as spontanuous caster, a standard action spell will take a full round action, a spell that normally takes longer than a standard action takes an extra full round action.

Now if I use two meta-magic feats on a standard action spell, how long will it take? Does the first feat make it a full-round action, so the second one adds a second full round action? Or does it still take just one full round action?

Q76. You're thinking of the wrong wording, and that's what's confusing you.

The rules don't say "when using a metamagic feat", they read "when casting a metamagic spell...". One mm feat, or ten, that spell is "a metamagic spell".

One full round (unless the spell itself takes longer to cast.)

Q 78.

The D&D skill roll mechanic is d20 + modifiers vs. DC, total score determines success or failure.

The D&D combat attack roll mechanic is d20 + modifiers vs. AC, total score determines success or failure unless you roll a 1 or a 20. One and twenty on the die are automatic failure/success for attacks.

If I recall correctly the D&D saving throw mechanic is the same as the skill roll mechanic. Meaning that the actual number on the die is irrelevant, only the total score determines success or failure. However, I have been seeing people referring to the saving throws and stating in thier posts that a natural 1 on the die is automatic failure. I'm pretty sure this is incorrect, paticularly since you can't crit on a save.

So, question. By which mechanic do saving throws function. (Yes, I'm being lazy here.)

A79 To break the quote down for you...
First it states "Your initiative result becomes the count on which you took the delayed action." So if you take an action in the round you delayed in (at init 1 in your example) your inititiative is now (and for subsequent rounds) the initiative you acted on.

It continues to say " If you come to your next action and have not yet performed an action, you don’t get to take a delayed action (though you can delay again)." Which basically says, if you didn't act before your initiative comes back around you have the choice of continuing to delay or taking aome other action on your normal initiative. At this point you've lost an action, not gained one.

A75. Indeed, you are correct. However, as far as I can tell you need two hands and a full round action to throw a Spear, so it cannot be used in combination with a Shield.

SRD
Thrown Weapons
Daggers, clubs, shortspears, spears, darts, javelins, throwing axes, light hammers, tridents, shuriken, and nets are thrown weapons. The wielder applies his or her Strength modifier to damage dealt by thrown weapons (except for splash weapons). It is possible to throw a weapon that isn’t designed to be thrown (that is, a melee weapon that doesn’t have a numeric entry in the Range Increment column on Table: Weapons), but a character who does so takes a -4 penalty on the attack roll. Throwing a light or one-handed weapon is a standard action, while throwing a two-handed weapon is a full-round action. Regardless of the type of weapon, such an attack scores a threat only on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. Such a weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

Thrown Weapons (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#thrownWeapons)

A spear is a two handed weapon for a wielder of its size, whether thrown or used in melee. It cannot be used with a shield as it is a two-handed weapon (exception: See Improved Buckler Defence).

Halfling Rogue Substitution level - Ranged Sneak Attack ability states that they get an extra 1d6 damage for sneak attacking with thrown weapons or slings, but melee SA is reduced by 1d6. This says to me that when using Sling/Thrown at 1st lvl, a Halfing Rogue will do 2d6 SA, but cannot SA with a melee weapon. However, on the table it lists Ranged SA as 1d6.

You can use spell trigger to activate any spell on your spell lise. You don't have to know the spell, but it must be on your list. A36. Page 16 of Complete Warrior has a rule that states that you lose all prestige class features if you no longer meet the prerequisites, retaining only hit dice, BAB increase, and save bonuses from the class. This is an explicit answer to your question. That said, this rule is controversial because later WotC books ignore it entirely: the Ur-Priest in Complete Divine, for example, clearly cannot exist if this rule is followed.

A61. Clarification: The armor bonus from Bracers of Armor won't stack with numeric armor bonuses from other sources. However, armor enhancements other than straight armor bonuses can be added to Bracers of Armor. The Arms and Equipment Guide has the rules for this on page 130. As an example, Bracers of Armor +8 with Heavy Fortification are listed at a cost of 169,000 gp.

Take a look at the Monster Manual III statblock for the voidmind grimlock:

Attack: Battleaxe +6 melee (1d8+6/×3) or tentacle +6 melee (1d6+4)
Full Attack: Battleaxe +6 melee (1d8+6/×3) and tentacle +6 melee (1d6+4)

It's pretty clear that the tentacle is not treated as a secondary natural attack, but an additional primary attack, which is taken at your full melee attack bonus and full Strength bonus to damage.

Furthermore, the MM3 errata changes the Attack line to the following:

Attack: Battleaxe +6 melee (1d8+6/×3) and tentacle +6 melee (1d6+4)

This means the tentacle attacks even if you only use the attack action rather than the full attack action. So, in this example, the voidmind grimlock can move and then attack with both his battleaxe and tentacle.

If the attack qualifies for sneak attack, you get sneak attack. If the attack doesn't qualify, you don't get it. This goes for any attack from any source.

Except for multiple attacks when only one would normally be allowed. Exceptions I can think of right now are Multi-Shot (although Imp Multi-Shot lacks this drawback), a two-weapon feat that allows two swings as a standard action, the Master Thrower ability to throw two weapons as one...I'm sure there are many more.

A61 Correction: The Arms and Equipment Guide was never updated to 3.5, all content of the book is null, void, and moot. Bracers of Armor cannot be fitted with with armor enhancements because they are not armor.

Correction of the erroneous correction: Quoting from page 4 of the 3.5 DMG (the primary source for information about magic items):

This is an upgrade of the d20 System, not a new edition of the game. This revision is compatible with existing products, and these products can be used with the revision with only minor adjustments.

Re: A 89

According to the FAQ (pg. 7), you can cast spells with the buckler hand just find. No weapon shifting required.

A buckler doesn't really occupy your hand. It's just strapped to your forearm. So you can do just about anything with a buckler on your arm as you could without one. It's just the weight of the buckler causes a penalty to attack rolls made with that hand (and potentially other types of rolls depending on the DM).

A.89/90. Unless the buckler was mithril you'd take a 5% arcane spell failure chance, but there would be no other penalty (no penalty at all if the buckler is mithril. The only action that takes a penalty with a buckler is attack rolls, which gives a -1 to attacks rolls and denies the bucklers shield bonus to AC for one round (without improved buckler defense that is).

A93. If the rock didn't have any hardness (like if it was a loaf of bread or something) yes it would take damage, but I can't see it taking more than 8 points of damage since a commoner can be thrown through a window and survive and they usually don't have mroe than 8 hit points. So I say yes, it does take damage but the damage is negated by its hardness. Anytime something or someone is thrown through a window or is hit by shards of glass, I usually make them take 1d3 or 1d4 of damage.

NullAshton
2006-09-10, 01:36 PM
Realistically, punching through a glass window or tossing someone through a glass window wouldn't do that much slashing damage. The force is from breaking the glass, which would probally be 1d6. Once you break through the window, the relative motion of the glass is the same as your body, so it wouldn't do any slashing there.

A 96 Aha! But if the target is "You" are there any spells that specify "You" has to be a humanoid? None I can think of... so many other creatures besides humanoids cast spells that if it has a target of "You" it has no race-type distinction. So the answer I guess would be yes.

Q.97 Firing into Melee

The PHB states that a person takes a -4 penalty for shooting or throwing into melee (which can be negated by precise shot). If an ally is directly inbetween the shooter and the target, does that provide the target with cover (in the form of the ally's body)? If so, do these penalties stack, and does the rule about striking cover when you miss by the penalty fit here? As in, can you strike your ally, regardless of that ally's Armor Class, by simply having your modifiers fall within the "missed due to cover" range?

Although commonly treated otherwise, cover grants a bonus to AC rather than a penalty to attack (see the AC modifier table (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/combatModifiers.html) in the SRD). Meanwhile, firing into melee is indeed a penalty to attack. As such, these stack with no problem.

I am having trouble finding where the rules describe determining if you strike what is granting cover, but I believe you have to hit your Ally's AC as well as miss your enemy by 4 to actually hurt your ally.
