Ok I will have a need to send my drow researchers up to the surface surreptitiously. The only ways I have thought of, was a platform of telekinesis with an armored canopy, And translucent front panel to be flown through. OR Digging a tunnel straight up. Obviously, the platform seems easier. But the tunnel seems more reliable.

They can't just use some illusion spells and teleport to the surface? What exactly are they planning to research?

Teleports can go horribly wrong. Faerzress is annoying like that.

And they are researching creatures, plants, everything that could beget a useful poison or body part.

why not get them to walk it like many of the patrols and raids from Menzo do.

Because the underdark is a dangerous place. I can't send the amount of troops a raid would consist and so would lose the safety in numbers advantage.

what they don't have in numbers they could possibly make up for with stealth... especially if they have a priestess of Llolth with them

We have no priestess. Part of the reason why we are sneaking around.

The closest we have to a priestess is a dread necromancer. And she is not good for stealth.

The dwarven solution is, of course, to dig until you either get where you want to go or run into something horribly, horribly, wrong. Have Fun!

What about insinuating yourselves, piecemeal or not, into actual raiding parties from the city heading towards the surface, and then conveniently slipping off to a rendezvous point once out of the chaos that the Faerzress plays on transportation magic?
