This is a thread to commemorate everyone affected by the floods, to talk about them, and to collect our best wishes for everyone.

I, personally, live in Toowoomba- which is where this all started. But from there, it's gotten much further, to the point of 3/4ths of Queensland being declared natural disaster areas...

This is a thread where we can give condolences to those who've lost so much.

I'd like to give my condolences and best wishes to those affected by this tradegy. First fires in Victoria, now floods in Queensland. It's just horrible. :smallfrown:

I love this country some times, ten years of drought, then half of it burns down, then the next year, it all floods.

Heeeeeey, it's Shadow!

The guy I went out with in high school and his parents are apparently trapped on a hill-island somewhere around Maryborough. Not too bad, I think, just stuck. I think my cousin's gotten warnings that indicate her house is set to get flooded, too...

Yeah, it's me.

While I don't post much any more, stuff like this demands it from me, I think. A disaster like this needs to be commented on, and to be known.

And it's still on fire. Western Australia. Started a few days ago to boot.

Anyway, I actually went grocery shopping two days ago. The floods haven't ruined my electricity or my internet. So I'm pretty happy. The bad news is, I can't leave my house. All roads out of my house are flooded and I can't leave. Times like these I wish I had a 4x4.

I have a friend (and fellow roleplayer) who's due to fly into Brisbane for a 6 month exchange program on the 13th of Jan. I'm not sure what's going to happen with that.

I just read that the river has flooded the business district of Brisbane and is supposed to match or exceed the record levels.

I hope all of you are safe and sound! My thoughts are with you and I hope that the situation improves quickly.

As I said in the first post- I live in Toowoomba, so that's my city.

It's not near my home, but wow. That kind of stuff shocks you.

And it's still on fire. Western Australia. Started a few days ago to boot.

The fire around Lake Clifton is pretty much all out now - though I believe it was deliberately lit and the images of the amount of land that was destroyed was just nasty. There have been fires cropping up in that area and surrounds since the start of summer, it's hot and flat and the wind can just race across it, it's prone to going up in flames.

:smalleek: I didn't watch the whole thing, but I hope those guys had the sense to put down the video camera and get out before they got stuck in the building!

Peregrine contacted his father & father's family, who live in Rockhampton - they're all fine. Apparently their part of Rockhampton didn't flood - although his father has been running around like a mad person apparently since he's the district manager for the pathology labs in the area and the one in Emerald got flooded.

I was watching the news last night and actually couldn't help laughing a bit at the tone one guy was using as he watched a pretty darn big metal storage container go floating down the street "Wow, that'll leave a pretty big dent when it hits something". It was just the - well, casual way he said it that struck me - sort of 'it's just another flood, we'll pick up the way we always do and move on - even if there is a giant metal container floating down the street currently'.

Speaking of flooding - has anyone heard anything recent about the flood in Carnarvon? That was the worst flood they've had on record, but the news readers seem to have forgotten all about it...

At the moment, I'm most worried for Brisbane. The river's overflowing- and the water is STILL RISING. It's not gonna hit its peak until Thursday.

Just...wow. How can you react to this?

And then I read a story like this (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503543_162-20028375-503543.html?tag=cbsContent;cbsCarousel).

All I can say is what a horrible sequence of events...I hope proper chains of support are set up to get everyone back on their feet quickly...

@Serp -- That video *was* incredibly intense! I have a river flowing right next to our house -- I could not imagine it rising so fast!

Water is scary :smalleek:

I read that someone spotted a shark swimming in the streets of Brisbane. Normal, sharkless flooding too tame for you, Australia? :smalleek:

I've come to the conclusion that Australia has figured out that merely making everything poisonous isn't enough to get rid of those pesky humans and have decided to bring out the big guns.

Anyway, my sincere condoleances to those who have lost property, friends or family.

Well my friend has left for the airport, so in about 24h he'll be arriving in Brisbane. He decided not to change his travel arrangements, and will be staying 6 months there. He says he's going to volunteer time for the cleanup, since he'll be there anyway.

Wow, that footage was amazing! And terrifying!

But I would also like to show you all this (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8195243/frog-hitches-ride-with-snake-to-flee-floods), sometimes, I really do love my country, sometimes it tries really really hard to kill us all and other times it does that.

That just broke my heart. His picture was on the front of the West Australian newspaper yesterday but I never had a chance to read the article.

I have to say, this made me smile though

There is a picture of Brisbane city on the front of the paper this morning - it's - not looking good. But at the same time I was facsinated to see that the water seemed to have overflowed the banks on one side of the river but not the other.

For anyone interested, here are some interactive before-and-after photos (http://www.abc.net.au/news/infographics/qld-floods/beforeafter.htm) showing the extent of the flooding.

According to The Cronicle two bull sharks (http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2011/01/14/ipswich-bull-sharks-spotted-flood-affected-streets/) were spotted swimming past the McDonald's in Goodna... I do not envy the people there :smallfrown:

This is a thread where we can give condolences to those who've lost so much.

What's happened is very impressive and terrifying... :smallfrown:
Where I live, we have problems with floods; some years ago, my town suffered for a debris flow from a mountain creek, that wiped away a house, killing two men.
So yeah, y'all have my sincere condolences.
