Random Banter

Ladies and Gentlemen, I bid you welcome to this most glorious of threads, Random Banter! Do kindly read the rules, for the preservation of all that is good in those posts which are yet to come is of a supreme, if understated importance...
Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

but then why was she happy when she got tanged, but terrified when rei/lillith rose through central dogma
Who wouldn't be terrified when something specially in that state rose through your workplace.
And I guess she came to terms at the end.

yeah, the ending was dissapointing,
Asuka: i feel terrible
END.
*white*

Well, for one, that isn't Asuka...

As for what was said/why?

6: I recently finished 'End of Evangelion.' The ending didn't make any sense. What did Asuka mean when she said "Disgusting." It's all very confusing to me. Could you please fill me in a little if you don't mind?

I'll try... The most widely circulated translation of the last line of EoE is "I feel sick", but Amanda Winn Lee (voice of Rei Ayanami, who also directed EoE) said she asked several translators, and she felt "disgusting" was the most accurate adaptation. You could say she is disgusted with/sick of the situation or wih Shinji himself. My favorite explanation though, is this one: My husband, Matt Greenfield, directed the TV series and is very familiar with the whole Eva franchise. Matt has said that although (Eva creator) Hideaki Anno seems to change his mind frequently about what various things mean in Eva, Anno once said that Asuka's comment about feeling "sick" was a reference to morning sickness. Now THAT gives ya something to think about, doesn't it! Of course, Anno is quite passionate about the idea that every person should decide for him or herself what Eva means to them.

I have to turn in a photography assignment tomorrow. I went out to print the pictures and already glued them to sheets of white paper. Having done that, since I'm in the dorm's common room, I had to go to my room to get my stapler.

So I get up, go to my room, open the door. And enter.

"....What was I gonna do again?" :smallconfused: Unable to remember, I returned to the common room. Sat down, watching TV. "Right! The assignment. Now I need... a stapler, right."

I get up and go again. Open the door. And stood in the middle of the room. "What was I gonna do...?" :smallconfused: Couldn't remember. I started to walk out. Luckily, I remembered right before I did. "STAPLER!"

I am now successfully stapling my assignment. Hooray.

If silence is defined as the absence of noise, and people are constantly making noise, no matter how subtle, does that mean that silence is impossible? Yes, but it's still rather unhelpful to point this out.

The final line has been quoted by several works such as Megatokyo.[15] During the english translation of the film, Manga Entertainment originally translated Asuka's closing line, "気持ち悪い。" ("Kimochi warui."), as "How disgusting." It can also be ambiguously translated as "really disgusting",[16] simply "disgusting",[17] "I feel unwell/terrible/sick," "gross",[18][19] "feeling is bad",[20] or "unpleasant feeling"[21] According to an episode of the Japanese anime show Anime Yawa aired March 31, 2005 on NHK's satellite TV, the final line was initially written as "I'd never want to be killed by you of all men, absolutely not!" or "I'll never let you kill me." ("Anta nankani korosareru nowa mappira yo!") but Anno was dissatisfied with Miyamura's renditions of this line.[22] Eventually Anno asked her a question which described what he was going for with this scene:
"Concerning the final line we adopted, I'm not sure whether I should say about it in fact. At last Anno asked me 'Miyamura, just imagine you are sleeping in your bed and a stranger sneaks into your room. He can rape you anytime as you are asleep but he doesn't. Instead, he masturbates looking at you, when you wake up and know what he did to you. What do you think you would say?' I had been thinking he was a strange man, but at that moment I felt disgusting. So I told him that I thought 'Disgusting.' And then he sighed and said, 'I thought as much.'" [23]

Only Asuka could have known of Shinji's presence in that room and what he did.

For that matter, whether she is Asuka or an amalgam, how does it change the answer to number 6?

Who she is and the meaning of what she said are two different things.

There is no indication she is an amalgam of anyone unless you consider the bandages a part of Rei, and nothing indicates Ritsuko., I thought you were using the point that since it was Rei's seiyu the one who spoke it meant she was an amalgam. Rei voice actress directed EoE, Asuka's voice actress delivered the line. The poster of what you provided was Asuka's voice actress for the English dub.

My point stands though, there is no evidence, except, maybe [as in improbable] the bandages that she is an amalgam.

I always understood it as Shinji and Asuka separating themselves from the collective of humanity because they are so screwed up. Rei herself would turn into Yui I think, as for Misato, there is no evidence she is art of that being or she is anywhere for that fact.

It's a non-pop piano version of Cruel Angel Thesis.
If one would try to play Cruel Angel Thesis in piano, the result would be that, so I guess all of the Cruel Angel Thesis piano videos are the same as the Good or Don't be videos (of course until someone decides to play it on something else).

Evangelion, mindraping you through it's soundtrack titling.

Well, various compositions use recurring themes throughout their length. This is an example of such.
For example, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V35jN5y8_Tw) (Only the Beginning of the Adventure) is structurally similar to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDtEtI1QDxc&feature=related) (Evacuating London); and they're two separate pieces.

Recurring themes is one thing, 90% identical is another. I approve of sampling and re-utilizing themes, it bugs me when peoples concept of remix becomes running it through another set of instruments and it annoys me when it is done in a OST and the piece didn't even crop up in the series. It's exactly the same in this case, only it's a piano instrumental version, they should call it like that.

On another note, Epic Narnia music, had forgotten how awesome the music, had two female sociopaths (AKA my sisters) screeming at my sides at every sight of a male lead or lucy, for the three movies.

The Wiki article admits a connecting genesis, but goes on to say "both are considerably different in feel from the more hard driving techno-dance original".

I think this is what they mean by separation from the origin.

Wholly agreed. The music of Narnia is epic. I'm partial to The Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBt5D7DPFtw&feature=related), but they could've cut it short, the final few minutes weren't really needed.

I doubt its only a "connecting genesis" they are the same, only one is a piano instrumental, the harmony and the melody line are the same.

Played side by side, the first seconds are exact match, then timing get weird but they remain the same in melody and harmony, not just structure, mind that the "Cruel Angel Thesis" is the complete version, so it's longer than the OP (referred normally as "TV sized") which is does end simultaneously with Be Good.

I think the first seconds on the begging feel like they belong somewhere else along with the last seconds, they would have made another song, and it would have been awesome, in "The Battle" they just seem out of place.

Flout as in to show disregard for commonly accepted behaviour, but also flaunt.
Lectures in no particular order:
Approaches to Middle English
Language and Gender
Standardisation and the History of English
Shakespearean Tragedy
Shakespeare and the Medieval
The Identity of Post-Conquest Writing (fascinating, seriously)
Medieval Romance
" Drama
Older Scots Poetry
Troilus and Criseyde
Body and Belief: Devotional Literature in the Late Middle Ages
Middle English Literature: Reading the Manuscripts
From Old to Middle English
Chastelaine de Vergy (lang) and (text) separately
Medieval French Translation Classes
Translating Medieval French
Literary Commentary on Medieval French Texts
Beroul's Tristan
Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso
Dante: Lecture
And probably some others, I definitely haven't got down all the Shakespeare ones I'd like to go to
Doi -
Angevin England
History of French
Maybe
History of Italian
It's now just a case of sorting out clashes and times to get from one place to the other.

I'm perversely glad I'm making you want to go back to uni for an English degree, that shows that I can get some of my enthusiasm and joy through the internet. Not to mention that chances are you'd either heard of what I was expounding upon or had read said text/similar ones recreationally.
If nothing else, if you've got absolutely nothing else on you could nick up your uni and sit in on some lectures right?

The tutorial was excellent though. Surprisingly so. My essay was on whether there was any consolation for the frail individual in the face of overwhelming perfection in the poems of Gawain-MS with reference to at least two poems.
We managed to discuss Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Robin Hood: Men In Tights as legitimate similes and analogies for the representation of Arthur's court as shown in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Result: awesome.
Next essay's looking promising too. Middle English Romances. Probably going to focus on verse ones.
And my tute partner this term's great as well.
Truly an excellent start to the term.

Only Asuka could have known of Shinji's presence in that room and what he did.

You're forgetting many things, including the whole human instrumentality project thing which could have lead to anyone knowing about it. You're forgetting that if the person is an amalgam, she could very well (probably would actually) know everything Asuka knew. You're also forgetting that maybe she didn't know (and that question asked to the voice actress was just to get the acting response, but not is not canon character knowledge).

I never mentioned Ritsuko, I mentioned Misato. Have you listened to the commentary in the English language version of the DVD? The theory of the amalgam is presented there. They mention the bandages and how they mirror Rei, while also mentioning the injuries (which were never treated with bandages) from the S1 units. I believe the Misato part of it comes from the eyes, but that I'm not so sure. The Asuka part of course comes from the majority of the body and the voice actress delivering the line.

Also, I said nothing about who delivered the line in so far as to why the theory of the amalgam is possible, only to show that the theory of the meaning of "disgusting/I feel sick" was presented by an insider, not an internet theory crackpot. (Which, again, is a separate issue to the amalgam theory.)

You are in fact right as for the actress response not necessarily being cannon, but it is impossible to discuss the working of Instrumentality as there is no explanation about it and why the end result shown to us looked like that.

Ritsuko was a lapsus, one for which I'm sorry.

I lack the English language version of the DVD, I prefer the Omake to understanding what's being said, as that can be found subbed online.
But in respect to the Amalgam theory, I don't think those are Misato's eyes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PXJ73Wsi3UA#t=229s), and how she could be an amalgam, and more importantly why are beyond my reach. I would like to invoke Occam's Razor or lex parsimoniae, and say that assuming she is 100% Asuka is by far less convoluted and makes the least number of new assumptions than assuming the Amalgam theory.

One point of debate regarding the final scene is whether or not Asuka is actually Asuka, as she is drawn with brown eyes rather than blue, and her left eye and right arm are bandaged, a mirror image of the bandages that Rei had when Shinji first met her. This has led some to argue that the Asuka that is with Shinji is an amalgam of Asuka, Rei, and Misato. Others believe that these resemblances are merely figurative or coincidental, since souls can't combine now that the Third Impact has ended. This argument posits that Asuka's eyes are still blue, only appearing brown like Misato's because of the notably red lighting of the environment, and that the bandages simply coincide with the injuries she suffered while battling the mass produced Evas and have no more significance than a call back to Rei's previous injuries. This argument is backed up by color analysis of the cel of that scene, which was later published as a card.

I like Asuka for being German, Gendo for being Insane and torturing Shinji and Ritsuko because she's the least insane of the main cast for the first half of the original run.
I don't loathe Shinji, I just want him to suffer, I know his angst is justified, but I don't want to see him crying 50% of the time.

The very fact that it is not explained makes everything after that unexplainable... Let me explain, there are a number of possibilities for what could have happened, including "bleed over" from one person's knowledge to another.

Also, I've heard someone say that Asuka knew about the incident because she mentioned it in Shinji's internal sequence. That Asuka is part of Shinji's mind/imagination, so that Asuka's knowledge is not the same as the real Asuka.

Without trying to push this as the "correct" theory, only one that is indeed possible: If you look at it through Freud's "Id, Ego, Super Ego" glasses, an amalgam of at least Rei and Asuka makes a bit more sense. If you look at it through Shinji's ideal woman glasses, an amalgam of either Rei and Asuka or Rei, Asuka and Misato also makes a fair bit of sense.

Edit: You edited your reply...

If the colour of the eyes is indeed just because of the tint and Misato has been ruled out, that still doesn't rule out an amalgam of Rei and Asuka.

In Rebuild it becomes more manageable.

Hurrah! As it is I'm already delaying working on my essay to make veggie enchiladas and have a movie night.

Well the former is perfectly reasonable of course. You have to eat.
Movie night is unambiguous procrastination assuming it was impromptu (But not if it was pre-planned), but you're far from being the only person do such things. What are you watching?

If it fits it fits. I mean, the stories are influential enough.

Does this refer to Once and Future King or Noggin the Nog? Or still Monty Python and Robin Hood: Men in Tights?
Wait, I missed that point before, how is Robin Hood: Men in Tights an analogy/simile for Arthur's court? (Bear in mind I have yet to see it)

Yes, it's still in the beginning stages, but I have twelve varieties of tea and a total over over two hundred bags. Which I'm told is a lot.

I own a grand total of one variety of tea. My dad, on the other hand, has a considerable variety, but I don't know if I'm allowed to drink it.

I totally agree. I do like to have a bit of onion in there as well, though.

Not only is it cheaper than buying food from the canteen at work, it's likely more healthy as well.

I have two varieties here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they comprise 200 bags. :smalltongue:

My boxes are two of fifty (but depleted), one brand new of forty, two brand new of twenty, and four boxes of depleted twenty.

Did you find it boring? All of my friends that read it seemed to reach that general consensus.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it was entirely boring, parts of it were exceedingly dull, and very intense. Let's just say that it didn't really grab my attention although it was an acceptable read for a half day.

200 teabags isn't particularly impressive, they come in boxes of 50 or more. It's just a supply to last for a reasonable amount of time.

As you can see above, mine are pretty small boxes, but I've a good variety. Earl Grey; chai; masala chai tea; masala chai cinnamon; masala chai ginger; masala chai cloves; masala chai black pepper; masala chai cardamom; green tea with apples and pear;; peppermint; raspberry, strawberry and loganberry; camomile and spiced apple; camomile, honey and vanilla and finally, orange, cinnamon and valerian tea.
I like varying my tea intake, so I collect flavours.

Well the former is perfectly reasonable of course. You have to eat.
Movie night is unambiguous procrastination assuming it was impromptu (But not if it was pre-planned), but you're far from being the only person do such things. What are you watching?

It was all unplanned. Everything I do with Lawyer Friend is unplanned. Our veggie enchiladas morphed into a kind of enchilada lasagne with added peppers and mushrooms and an entire block of cheese.
Plus we made this mess for dessert. Melt butter and sugar in a saucepan, add fruit (strawberries and blackberries), add more sugar and butter; then add milk and flour. Then add crushed up biscuits somewhere along the way
Very sweet, very yummy. Takes a while to eat though because of the metric tonne of sugar and sweet things involved.
Then we watched the first episode of The Dresden Files followed by the 2007 version of Pride and Prejudice.
Very heavy food. Long day.
Bed after tea.

All of them, but especially Noggin the Nog and The Once and Future King.
Men in Tights can be seen as an analogy for Arthur's court as shown in Sir Gawain and the green Knight because it's very exaggerated, lots of laughter (think legs akimbo, booming jolly laughs (or the actors from Blackadder the Third)) and it seems to be almost a satire on the expectations of Arthur's court, even though this court is implicitly an immature one, much given to games and frivolities despite the seriousness of what has happened.
It's the tone of the film that reminded my tutor of the court as seen in Gawain and the Green Knight.

Holy mother of pearls, my download speed is rocking tonight. It peaked at 580 kb/s.
Normally, I'm lucky if I break 100 kb/s.
Finishing an 820 MB download in half an hour is a good feeling.

That's some blitzing speeds right there.
My internet averages a respectable 520 kb/s, but alas can rarely exceed that; it's actually not bad for a broadband infrastructure that is lacking in most areas.
Occasionally and very randomly, the speed would spike to 700 kb/s.

Same here. In the UK, the broadband infrastructure is pretty appalling. They're just now starting to convert to fiber optics, and that's still only in a few select places, whereas the rest of the country will have to settle for the old copper wires for another 5-7 years.

I think my download speeds maxed out at about 320kbps once. And that was very much an anomaly. Usually it hovers about 80-90kbps.

It was delicious, but not really complicated at all. Lawyer Friend and I follow a very simple cooking method: put things in a pot. And no recipes What we set out to make is never what we end up with.
Sugar-bread? Sounds a bit icky. Why make it?

That was pretty much my cooking method after a while. Originally I followed recipes, but then I got into the habit of just using up whatever ingredients my housemates had left, so I developed a more improvisational approach.
Sugar-bread is delicious. I'd make it because I had to put that melted sugar on something because once it cooled down it'd just stick.

Yes, she was very tired. Went to bed at the dazzlingly early time of about one o'clock!
Today's been a nice day. It was actually sunny. In January. Boggled I was, boggled me mehds.

I should probably put on my retainer at some point in the near future.
It's been a while since the last time.
About as long as it's been since I went to the orthodontist.
And they said to keep doing what I was doing! Which I've been doing.
Go, me!

Actually, I might be getting slapped more, but that's always funny, so I tend to forget about it when considering problems.

Well, I've had my Braces off for like a year now, so I don't need Invisalign. (But my Retainer was clear. I'm bummed though because I only needed to where it at home.)

why did you have it in a place the dog could get at it?
I didn't. Some friends were over (we were playing D&D). It was around 6 so we decided to head over to Wendy's. I took out my retainer and knocked it off the table. I went upstairs to get some cash and when I came down, I heard my dog chewing on something. I thought it was a friends rather pricey mini, so I ran to pull it out of her mouth. (I would've pulled anything out of her mouth though.) Sadly, it turned out to be my retainer.

Wow, people have slow internet. I'm also UK, and on (admittedly rare) occasions, my download speed has broken 1Mb/s.

Know what you mean, Ku, it's only just now that the Australian government, having bowed to public pressure, are starting to roll out the fibre-optic cabling that will undoubtedly form the backbone of the national broadband network.
While I applaud their initiative, this infrastructure and "nation-building" project is scheduled for at least ten years (possibly more given the Australian laid-back approach to just about anything) and an unprecedentedly high budget.

I think I'm on a rather unstable internet connection and some distance from the nearest exchange. I'm on ADSL2+, but the speeds I get tend to be erratic; I usually hover around 500 kb/s. And drop-outs tend to be a regular occurrence.
Nature also seems to have an impact on speeds; I managed slower speeds than usual the past few days due to the pervasive flooding.

Oh, it's an orthodontic device to be worn at night to secure one's teeth after having braces removed. It's to prevent drifting and realignment of teeth into their original positions.

BT had a competition a while ago, where people were encouraged to go in and register for their town to be the first ones to be connected to the fibre-optics network, and they just released the name of about five towns the other day that will get it.

It appears that there are only a few main switches in Scotland left to upgrade to this, then it's a matter of getting the local switches upgraded as well.
Apparently 'super fast broadband at up to 40Mbps' will be available.

Yeah, distance from the switch, other people's internet use and the weather all influence the speed of which you can connect.

Not really. The main reason for me oversleeping was that I didn't get to bed until about 3AM. The secondary reason was that I was stupid enough to try to set my alarms to a bit earlier, so i could get up and do some stuff I needed to do before I headed off to work.

I never understood this GPA you Americans talk about.... 4 is perfect score right?

How does it work on an out of 100 scale?
We have various grades and different values for each grade.
A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69) and F (0-59).
A is valued at 4, B at 3, C at 2 and D at 1. Fs have no value. Totally worthless.
Each class also has a value of units. If you get a B in a 3 unit class, you get a value of 3 for each of those units.
You then add up all the numbers and divide by the number of units.
For example, if you have a C in a 5-unit class, B in a 3-unit class and B in a 2-unit class, you have a 2.5 GPA. If the 5-unit class was instead an A, you'd have a 3.5 GPA.
Honestly, I don't understand how this scale was thought up. It's pretty arbitrary.

Apparently 'super fast broadband at up to 40Mbps' will be available.

That's pretty excellent, here's hoping BT manage a sterling and quick job of it! And do not raise current or subsequent prices to fund it.
Countries really should have planned for fast internet access, or at least considered its benefits and challenges to nation-building. Though, such considerations might have been left in disarray by the GFC.

Our government placed a tender for the admittedly few major ISP companies to develop the network, and then unceremoniously snubbed the main telco, Telstra (which was originally called Telecom; as you can see, Australians are a bastion of creativity :P). Although it could be a part-government, part-private company affair, the government prefers having oversight.
Despite Telstra and its peers being major corporations, they provide the absolute worst download-to-speed ratio, price and service. However, they have near monopolisation over the phone and ISP market, indeed, Telstra has a stranglehold over the exchanges and network already in place.

The vastness of the continent probably should've been considered, large patches of Australia are just emptiness.

Well, here's also hoping that fibre-optics doesn't become obsolete in a few years.

Sounds as if it'll be a good day to spend playing StarCraft 2. in an air conditioned room.

ION, might we be the first Martian immigrants, the first Martian explorers? The origins of life might have arisen from a single rock catapulted across the vast tapestry of stars.
Or might our beginnings extend beyond our own solar system or exist outside the solar system entirely?

Link svp? This sounds pretty darn out there...

Midterms sent me from a 2.9 or so to a 3.4.

Also, my GPA was 3.14 for a while. Which is the best GPA ever.

How the HECK did Mid-Terms HELP you?

Hey, if he slacked off all year, but then aced all the tests and exams and such, that would help him!

I did that once (back in 8th grade). Got caught, felt horrible, not doing it again.

I did the opposite... Not bright kids, not bright!

That's basically the story. I'm taking pretty easy classes ('cept for AP Calc... >.<) but I'm using most of 'em for naps, so finals are important. :smalltongue:

I do that on everything but Math and French. I'm really good at math and French, I just suck at taking tests in them.

Complicated. Thanks for explaining, though.

In the end, I guess we're doing the same thing, only we skip a bunch of steps. All grades here are averaged by percentages.

Oh man. So, in Ontario, we only have a percentage. Buuuut, in IB we have a number out of 7. A 7 is a 95-100, a 6 is a 90-95, other than that it goes down by 10, until you reach 1=fail.

Oh, I was just pondering on the origins and meaning of life; and perhaps unduly waxing lyrical :). Though our knowledge and understanding is as yet lacking, we've already gathered that life does not require the sun or photosynthesis or indeed any terrestrial environment to thrive.

Yeah, one of the my friends did IB, and those were the scores they got. I think he pulled a few 7s, which was nice.
It makes for an interesting conversation.
A: "Good news, everyone, I got *insert high score*!"
B: "I got *insert moderately average but impressive nonetheless score"
C: "I got *insert low score* in IB"
A: "Uh"
C: "It translates into a 99.95 (highest possible score)"
A: ...
B: Well done!

In unrelated news, I'm part of someone's background. I believe on her cell phone.
I've met said girl once.
One of my best friends saw the picture and didn't believe that it could be me.
Nope. It's me. On Halloween.
The girl is wearing a black dress and has fake wounds on her arm and neck, her boyfriend was wearing dress pants, a dress shirt and a vest, my adopted little sister is wearing a leather bodice and I believe a skirt and another friend is wearing a dress. Apparently I'd taken off at least part of my costume, though. Dunno why :smallconfused:
That was the day I got hit by a hatchet!
Yeah... The friend who informed me of this was greatly confused. I was greatly amused.

In related news, the above friend went to a party a while back and my little sister was there. They hadn't been introduced. I asked my friend to lick my sister. My sister's reaction to being licked was, apparently, "HI, [absolmorph]!"

ION:
Brr... :smalleek:
it's really cold! (was just outside.)

It feels like -20 with wind according to my brother. Some of my friends are hopeful for a day off. I on the other hand, assume I'll still have to wake up at 4 to go to swimming morning practice. Oh joy...

note: That's a few hours from now and it's supposed to get A LOT colder.

I once read that to be wise requires that you recognize how little you truly know.
I'm likely butchering it, but I don't feel like looking through my copies of the Lost Years of Merlin series to find the exact quote.

More along that line:
The more I know, the more I know I don't know.
Being mature means knowing that it's ok to be immature some of the time.
I knew almost everything, but then I learned more, and now I know almost nothing.

(OK, I made that last one up, but having only two lines made it seem so empty.)

The last one is related to Pratchett:
Universities are places to store knowledge. Students come to university knowing everything. When they graduate, they realise that they know almost nothing. Clearly that knowledge must have gone somewhere; thus it is stored in the university, probably in the walls.

IRN: How do you beat the "I can never learn this in time so there's no point in trying" revision panic?

Well, here's also hoping that fibre-optics doesn't become obsolete in a few years.

The BT homepage for the infinity project claims that fibre-optics are 'future proof'. So apparently, the future won't be able to get to it.

If only I had that game :)

You should totally get it.

Was it good for you? :smallamused:

It wasn't bad. I only almost passed out or almost threw up twice during the 2 hour session.
First 35-40 minutes was a run-through of the different exercises, and after that, I was breathing heavy and sweating profusely (brain bleach provided at the exit) and that's when my team leader said:

"Right, time for warm-ups!"

After the warm-ups, it was 5 minutes on the rowing machine with alternating 1 minute slow pace and one minute sprint pace (or as long I could manage the sprint pace, which yesterday was about 10-15 seconds each).
Then weight session after that, with a bunch of exercises. I believe there's about 6 stations with doing 6, 8, then 10 reps of each station with no break in between, only dropping the weight.
So first 6 reps at say 45kg bench press, then after those 6 reps, drop the weight to 40 kg, then do 8 reps, then drop to 30 kg and do 10 reps.
That's brutal, I'm telling you.

Actually, I've linked to the training program that my team leader made for me in the Deth Muncher exercise thread.

Heh, like you I'm feeling pain as well; I'm freaking sore all over. I spent yesterday at the gym and worked for 2 hours. Although all that hard work might have been wrecked by my consumption of fish and chips and pizza and fizzy soft drink.

I think I wrecked my hard work by having a couple of grilled chicken fillets when I got back home after the training. Well, I ended up having three. Way too many to be good for me.
