So, one of the characters, Hrothgar, died at level 2. He was killed, decapitated, his head was flown 20 miles away via harpy, and finally buried. However at level 4, one of my other players decided that he wanted to try and raise Hrothgar as a deity by collecting enough worshipers to turn him into "Hrothgar the Whiskey Fairy, god of whiskey." A third player has stated that if his paladin/cleric (killed in the same manner as Hrothgar) was to be resurrected, he would switch his faith over and become the first cleric of The Whiskey Fairy.

So my question to you is, how should i handle the ascension to godhood, and how long should it take? (the party is level 4) I've already stated that they need at least 30,000 fanatic followers to do it, what else?

It should take a while. Without miracles in a world where gods do perform miracles, people are gonna take a lot of convincing before they begin praying to him. And do make sure you've a reason for it. Why pray to the god of Whiskey when the god of fertility makes sure that you will get a good harvest of oats?

Finally, your cleric will be a cleric of a god without much power, hence he probably won't be able to cast divine spells for quite a while.

The rules do say that you can be a "cleric of a cause" rather then a deity, so it is feasible to do it.

Man, your players are awesome:smallbiggrin: maybe look at converting brewers and other peaple who work in the beer making industry, if anyone should be worshiping the Whiskey fairy its them.

It should take about as long as the characters need to raise enough money to get 30,000 or so people drunk. Then convert them with the promise of more whiskey!

Also: Other than drunks/booze-lovers, you should try converting distillers, (specifically whiskey-makers) not so much beer-makers.

And yeah, this sounds awesome, very silly, but awesome.

Additional:

What domains would the resultant god have? His portfolio would be obvious: Whiskey, Whiskey-Making, Drunkeness, maybe distilling if whiskey is the only common distilled alchohol in your world... but I can't think of many domains that would fit...

Maybe the pleasure domain from the BoED (if the guy is Good Aligned?) Or the Gluttony Domain from BoVD (if he's Evil, drunkeness is technically considered a form of gluttony...) You may have to make up a new domain or two.

You need a proper cleric to start spreading the word about Hrothgar and create a series of rituals and prayers that people can start doing to worship him.

First of all, bards need to be identified to sing the glorious song of Hrothgar and the kindnesses and blessings he gives out to people who are drinking. Hrothgar's portfolio needs to be solidified so that he takes up an important niche that he can be responsible for, while not stepping on the toes of any other gods and their portfolios. If he's the god of drinking (especially hard liquor), drinking songs and protector of the inebriated, then this can work out well.

The bards can also sing songs of his divine intervention in saving drunks from certain deaths. If his position as protector of the inebriated is made concrete in the minds of mortals, then he will get plenty of prayers every night from men who utter a prayer before shambling home drunk and the sobre friends and family of the inebriated who pray that Hrothgar watch over the inebriated and get them home safe. (Whether or not Hrothgar actually does these things at first is immaterial.)

A number of catchy drinking songs about Hrothgar need to be created in worship of him. The more people who start singing these songs, the more he will be worshiped. You don't necessarily need people to become devout worshipers who focus on him all the time as much as you need a niche category where they focus on him at a specific time and place.

Quick prayers that can be uttered in recognition of him during different times can also be very useful. Your adventuring group can be the ones to start them. A quick prayer included at the end of a toast could be said before the the group begins a night of drinking. This could easily become a tradition in taverns across the kingdoms. A slightly longer prayer of protection could be established that can be said to protect those who are drunk and have to make their way home.

All definately true. So, you'll first have to get that dead cleric friend of yours back to life, or find someone else willing to become his first cleric. You could also have a PC take levels in the Evangelist PrC from complete divine.
Lastly, you don't want any of your rituals to be too complicated, since they'll often be performed by drunks.

What about the Druken Master PrC from CW, monks whose abilities are fueled by alcohol could definately be part of Hrothgar's portfolio.

What an exotic method of execution...

Also, bartenders.
