Some DMs like to make the players feel the ambiance of the scene they're setting, and music can be a useful tool for doing this. What kind of songs have you used or would you use for peaceful situations, like traveling, entering a village, drinking at the local tavern, etc?

Here's one that I came across recently and was thinking of trying out the next time the PCs enter a rural village: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1p09LxI_c0

The soundtrack of Arcanum I found to be especially good for a variety of places and atmospheres, not so much for traveling, I think, but the Dernholm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSpXTrVfbe8)soundtrack in particular was pretty good for decayed areas that are still inhabited or an oppressed population center.

Mostly a slightly mournful or at least... downplayed sort of mood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKab5yO-2Ug&feature=related). Possibly more easily fit in with a more somber interpretation of Eberron than more high adventure games, but even so I'm sure there are places where it'd have something appropriate.

I only used Le Repos du Guerrier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1nQu2Tt9Ds) from Code Geass once, during a lunch break. :P It still sounds like pretty good tavern music, though.

Tristram (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8) from Diablo I was great for my horror game set in Sharn (Eberron), during an extended fire in the industrial sector that blackened the skies and caused blackened snow to fall onto the city.

Yeah, I can see that working, depending of course on the atmosphere of the tavern; to me it almost sounds more like 'boisterous marketplace' :smalltongue:.

Tristram is just classic, but I could never bear to use it myself because everyone I play with would instantly know where it was from and spoil the mood with quotes like: "stay awhile and listen!" :smallsigh:

For taverns though, I really feel you can't go wrong with The Witcher's songs, like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzaDb5wFLH8&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfCzTcydsX0&feature=related, depending, of course, on the mood you're going for.

Your taverns might be sometimes visited by the very master of the flute Ian Anderson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URMmUpqt-Pc&feature=related). That or works of Basil Poledouris (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-paRZr51zw) (relevant fragment starts at 2:30) or another piece (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aak6N9yvKd0) by the same composer. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdbAuCgxARo), this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54Yb-2clt-s) or that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQalq5QvsEE) might be good as well.

Obviously you can pick something out of early Clannad: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlIBYtodrUI), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87x8R0BjgJk&feature=related), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9VhNlfhMKs&feature=related).

For slightly more middle-eastern or mystical feel I'd take Loreena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvPu2PGzcSg&feature=related) McKennitt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1AcESk7JBA&feature=related).

If you travel really far, then John Barry did a great job of showing vast distances and endless plains through music: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5R5lALXwJU&feature=related), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AOlrOqjVxU).

Dunno if its what was asked, but:

always gave me the feel of a small, peaceful village. The other Age Of Wonder tracks are also very good for distinct moods and I think they soung really nice.
