This is the actual Roleplay for the Dark Heresy Game The Faceless Master

The wind howls outside the tightly shut metallic door. Sand can be seen at its edge but otherwise the outside world is completly cut off. The bunker your all in is sleek and minimalistic, the only wires or tubing there is to keep the air circulating and the lights on...the dim lights that still leave shadows clinging to the edges.
The bunker is reminisent of the prefabricated military bunkers dropped by shuttles on a planet for a quick would be defensible position. A black aquila spreads across the floor.

Within are five beds, spread out across the room upon which all of you are laying. You have no memories as to how you got here...only thoughts of what happened before. That large augmented Human....human? The raspy mechanical voice certainly didnt convey humanity.

(begin posting whenever your ready...please only post ounce...when all players have posted...I will post with the posting order.)

EDIT: perception checks have been made for glances around the room e.t.c not detailed searches PMing those who found particulars.

EDIT 2: everyone IS ARMED. your belongings basically being ontop of you or in there various pockets/holders.

Nicolo De Manchenko
Nicolo sat up, holding his head in one of his hands. He was one of those people for which that gesture came naturally; thin, bespectacled with rather thin, black rimmed glasses, and close cropped black hair. His head felt like a narco ganger high on obsura had taken to his head for use as a drum. He shook his head to clear it of thought, readjusted his glasses, and scanned the room.
Barren, standard issue bunker, his training said. Probably dropped in. Unlikely to be weakened by the impact. There were other people sprawled out across the floor, too, apparently in similar states of unconciousness.
After analyzing the room, Nicolo rifled through his coat for his weapons, knowing it was likely not to yield anything. Anyone taking him captive would certainly disarm him. A fool almost certainly couldn't -wouldn't- capture a noble of his standing. (Standing? Did he have standing to speak of anymore?)
Then he remembered the figure. The stylized I. He was in the Inquisition's clutches now. Emperor alone knew what they would do with him.
"Drusus," He muttered with a tinge of high gothic in his voice. "What have I gotten myself into?"
Finding his pistol in its familiar holster, Nicolo relaxed a bit. There was nothing like the relaxing feel of a gun in your hands to put your mind at ease. Perhaps his captors weren't too intelligent after all. He stood up, brushed himself off, and walked over to one of the beds, the one where it would be easiest to get behind it for use as cover if necessary.

It was strange, this forty-first millennium. Surrounded by the ruins of an age of unimaginable glory mad it seem even less brilliant, as if the whole galaxy had come in from the bright day and had not had time to let its eyes adjust to the new shadow.

It showed too, in the eyes of people. The trials of humanity were endless, and the life of any one, Well, perhaps there is ONE exception were worthless things to be spent as needed for a greater good.

We are a broken species, a broken people. Then again, am I the same as them? What allegiance do I owe such as these? They would not accept me as there own anymore then they would draw a serpent too their bosom.

Then again, when times are like this even the queen of the Nile embraced the viper. That was a lesson of the galaxy, either you must cope with the grim darkness or you must end.

I for one will not embrace oblivion. There is a higher purpose, a yearning in me for my birthright. The Golden Age of Technology is my right!

Enough grandstanding though; it did little good to preach to yourself. A receptive audience you may be, but equally so was the wall before him.

Ground myself in my environment. Seek the familiar and patterns will form. Make certain you possess the data before attempting to understand it. Make certain to understand it before attempting to act upon it.

With a stretching of his shoulders and a few audible cracks, whether from bone or metal pleasantly undiscerning. Uriel opened his eyes. Glancing around he saw several others in the room with him, along with several examples of technology. The place was spartan, the double headed eagle on the floor was a sign common to the pseudo cult of personality religion most common among the gentis.

He focused on the technology, likely standard issue; but perhaps a rare make, and thus containing another tantalizing secret.

The bunker is of munitorium design. Commonly used with the Imperial guard. The bunkers are designed to be carried by dropship and placed on the field of battle as a quickly constructed HQ. This module seems to have seen better days...approx age 10 years. This seems to be the barracks module...containing no communications equipment or indeed anything of importance at all bsides air filtration (vent in the cieling and an external solar array on the cieling to provide power for the doors and filtration system.

and your not really exceeding the skill besides you got a freaking 7

Uriah slowly slides out of unconsciousness, the stuffy vagueness of a drugged sleep familiar to him after his weeks in the able hands of the Medicae. Wait... This isn't the Medicae facility. This... With a start, the slightly short, powerfully built Guardsman rolls out of bed and lands on his feet with his combat knife already in hand, settling into a well-drilled knife-fighting stance. Dark of hair and light of eye, Uriah is a bulky figure in his standard-issue Imperial Flak Armour, which is camoflaged in a blend of dark colours. On his back is a heavy Camo-cloak, itself bearing a standard pattern of greens.
He looks around, and slowly relaxes. How did I get here? All I can remember is that somebody told me... I was needed by the Inquisition! With that thought forcing its way through his still foggy mind, Uriah sheaths his knife once more and looks around the room, taking stock of his situation and the bunker's cohabitants. After a few seconds, he bursts out, "Vera!" and quickly scoops up a long-barreled lasrifle with a hefty telescopic scope from its position near his bed, sits down and begins field-stripping the weapon.

Youve seen these before, there prefabricated bunkers the imperial guard drop in if building hardened positions is impossible.
You see the tech priest move and jostle but otherwise do little.
You see another man up (the assasin), but obviously having recenlty gotten out of the bed and has just double checked hes armed.

GRRREEEAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!

A sudden roar of rage erupts from the recumbent juggernaut as he suddenly bursts into a flurry of motion, leaping out of bed with a crash. He lands upon his feet, a trench combat spade swinging from his left hand, a knife slashing in his right, seeking to spill as much heretic blood as he could ere the mutant mob overwhel...

...and then he stops, stunned. Seeing the markings of the Imperium in the bearing of those around him, the very material of this building, and indeed, with the Aquila staring up at him from the floor, the massive mountain of muscle slowly relaxes his stance but doesn't drop his guard.

Charging the trenches on Sinclair, supporting the Cadians' flank... heavy losses, got cut off... mutant mob... then... a, uh, metal man? Aug'd healer? Wot in the bloody blazes...

...run his thoughts as he returns his knife to its boot-sheath then sets down the heavy-headed sharp-edged shovel against a nearby wall. He breathes in and with feel and with sight makes sure that he is unhurt, that his kit is still about him and that there is no immediate threat from the others in the room.

A single breath that seems somewhere between a growl and a grunt escapes his thick lips as he methodically checks his arms and armour. The standard issue combat blade he knows is in his right boot, the shoestrings still have enough pull for a strangle, in a pinch. Armour straps still itchy, flak plates still too small for his great mass...

He draws the bulky handcannon from its holster on his right thigh, hefting the brutal hunk of ill-crafted metal in one meaty fist. Iron sights, reinforced barrel, heavy body, five-chambered cylinder, hammer, trigger, grip, spare shots at his belt. He then slapped it back home then repeated the review by rote with the laspistol holstered at his left hip and an assault rifle and double-barreled shotgun backslung at either shoulder. All the while, he paces like a caged and nauseous tiger, keeping up a steady stream of muttered invectives and epithets from barracks the galaxy over.

Though his muscles move with practised ease, the mind behind those deep brown eyes churns furiously while still keeping up his guard, should these others pose an immediate threat... Sain' Barth's balls! Where the bloody hell am I? Are we...? Plascrete? Air raid shelter? Barracks? The mission! Is the squad alright? Wonder how the folks at home are doing... Agh, gaddammet, man, focus! Huh... lookit these other buggers... Guard, sniper... princeling with a pistol... iron man...

He finishes reassembling his autogun, then pats the scabbard at his side with a wistful smile... then blinks in surprise to find that the sword he had left home with was still there, whereas last he knew of it, it was hilt-deep stuck in the belly of a beast of the Warp. Snorting with satisfaction, the dark-skinned Guardsman in a camoflage cloak of shades of brown hefts his autogun, leans back against the nearest wall and smirks ever so slightly, settling back to wait for the others and see what can be seen, know what can be known before he makes his own move...

You recognise that the place is imperial design, there bunkers used by the military and youve seen them around before. Besides that you know little else about them.
as for awareness, you notice the other people in the room are all armed..but dont seem to appear hostile. You also notice the vent in the cieling can probably fit someone smaller up into and out of the bunker..if the grates can be removed.

Ethan was gradually waking up from his narcotic-induced sleep.
Regular breathing came with a strain in the first few minutes. The muscles and joints felt stiff and unresponsive. The mouth was dry and had a particular unpleasant aftertaste in it. And the headache... lets just leave it at that. Overall, he felt woozy and bruised, like after the full night of celebrating his first successful operation.

'Have I had one drink too many the day before?', - he wondered. But swept these thoughts aside, as, suddenly, several indistinct images started flooding into his mind: a hulking robed figure in the alley; a feeling of concealed threat coming from it; it uttering something with a grating voice, followed by a sharp nip of pain in the back of the neck; then oblivion.

'So it wasn't me getting drunk into unconsciousness after all. I've been drugged!' An unexpected idea popped up. He rose up a little from the bed and pinched himself.
'Aha! Fascinating.' Somehow, he was sure, all of the after-effects added up and fit M99 perfectly.

Then Ethan's eyes widened and a scowl formed on his face. 'Damn it, Mira! How did I let this happen to me and left her alone?!'
'No, wait, calm down - she had decided she needed some personal time the day that thing attacked me. She is a quick girl and, ultimately, the devil looks after his own. Heh, besides, the little fox knows about my stash in the wall crack... and will figure out how to open it, eventually.'

'Anyway, now I know the "how" of my capture. Need to think of the "why".'

With that Ethan scanned his immediate surroundings. 'At least there is light and I'm not behind the bars,' he thought chuckling. Beside the bed he found the backpack with all of the equipment intact, as well as his weapons: a sword sheathed at the left hip and a pistol holstered at the other.

Surprisingly, he was not alone. The room he was in housed another 4 people and so he began to study them.

'This must be other unfortunate lot noted by our mysterious captors. Still, doesn't tell much of their intentions.'

'"Drusus",' he mentally cringed. 'I sincerely hope there isn't anyone among them that will bother me with religious jabber.'

As Ethan heard someone exclaim "Vera", he turned his head and gave the man a quizzical look.

Eventually, overwhelmed by fatigue, he stretched on the bed again, arms folded behind his head.
'So, how you people had the luck to end up here?' Ethan asked, when finally decided to break the silence.

It is hard to judge Ethan's stature from the sitting position, roughly half a head below the average height. Trim body, as far as you can tell with the trench coat he is wearing, bronze skinned, with light-brown, curled, backswept hair; ruddy cheeks, hard brown eyes, straight nose and full lips on a face, unshaven for almost a week.

M99 is a type of drug that Ethan has succesfully discerned.

as for the door it is a sliding automatic thick metalic door with the Aquila painted across it in black. There appears to be no locking mechanism on it. ts the kind you expect to go whoosh then slam shut.

Nicolo De Machenko
Nicolo cast his gaze over the others in the room. A tech priest, some sort of insane man-mountain, a guardsman, and some man he couldn't identify off the top of his head. These were, he reflected, not the best of cell mates. Certainly not the worst, however.
"Calm down, will you? None of us are going to shoot you. I haven't been paid, the guardsman likely hasn't been ordered, but I can't be sure of the techpriest," or the other one, he added silently. He flicked the pistol out of it's holster, and checked the clip. Satisfied that the gun was loaded, he returned it to its holster.
More devout men than he might have been praying at this time, but Nicolo had never seen the use of it. On Malfi, people generally only started praying after they knew you were after them. It seemed the others were of similar opinion. One of them had almost snorted when he said Drusus. He might not be fond of the Ecclesiarchy, (It was hard to be fond of holy men after you knew they died just the same as everyone, but with considerably more pleading) but that might be taking it a bit far. The Ecclesiarchy doesn't do it for some people, He supposed.
"Would anyone who gets the Inquisition's attention actually answer that question?" He said to the fair-haired one. That's right, De Machenko, a small part of his mind said, keep secrets. It runs in the blood. Where else are the Machenko fortunes from?

"Far as I ken, this ain't nei'r tha halls of the ancestors nor the palace of the Emp'rer" drawls the juggernaut standing at one wingtip of the Aquila on the floor. His finger rests readily across the trigger guard, his left hand slowly caressing the barrel and the loaded curving magazine.

"I thought I'd bloody frakken died. Banite 44th, puttin' down a her'tic 'bellion on Sinclair's trenches. Last thing I 'member's gotten me blade hilt deep in some munte's ribs, then got swarmed by 'is buddies. Then there was a boom... gren'd er mor'r, I reckon" he continues, jaw drawing tight. "Unless ye count some sorta white light an' a man o' iron wi' a burnin' red eye..."

"...a frakken armoured aug'd CYCLOPS, wearin' a robe of WORDS an' totin' a bolter"

Baring his teeth at the oh-so-reconcilliatory princeling, the black juggernaut spits bitterly. "Y'eva 'ad years-long c'mrades go rabid-mad an' start shootin' up tha place...?"

Brother? No. I... have NO... brother.

"Interestingly, yes," Nicolo suspected that that that wasn't the answer the guardsman was looking for, but it was the truth. Besides the rigours of training, which some people apparently couldn't take, there had also been his ... the bodyguards. To be fair, he had probably caused that. He had done what he had to there, though.
Nicolo noted Ethan's response with some intrest. On Malfi, that was tantamount to a threat, by a person who didn't know conventions, no less. Here, he was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. The guardsmen seemed to be quite similar, enthused about killing heretics and lacking something in terms on intellect and social graces. Nicolo wasn't smart, but he was raised by people who were. The techpriest still seemed to be a mystery, though.

The stocky Guardsman continues stripping his weapon, his lips moving in a subvocalized chant, while the others talk and threaten. He looks up for a moment when the Feral roars and jumps out of bed, but quickly goes back to work. Finally, he finishes and lays the individual parts of the lasgun out in front of him, then turns back to the group. "I ain't got orders to shoot no-one. 'Course, command's pretty bad about tellin' me not to when the Emp'rer tells me I should... Erm. I'm Specialist Stane, 9th Abraxian Infantry Regiment, 11th Company, Sniper Division. Stationed on Gra... No, wh'ever this bunker is, I 'spose. Judgin' by the person who brought me here, now on special detach'ment to the Inquisition." Stane's Low Gothic is heavily accented with the twang remarkably common to farmers all across the galaxy. With this, a massive grin appears on his face. "The Inquisition! Reckon that means fightin' Heretics and Purgin' the Xeno-monsters! By Him on Terra, He must be smilin' on me today!" Finally, he pulls a small box of tools out of one of his pockets, and begins cleaning his weapon. "Let my hand wipe the grime from your perfect form, May you purify with your bolts of light." Unlike his Low Gothic, Stane's High Gothic wouldn't be out of place in the Courts of Terra itself, though it has the distinct archaic form of a memorized litany rather than fluent speech.

And so the "why" was revealed to him. 'As if things weren't bad enough, the Inquisition was involved. That is just freaking perfect. The only thing to top it off would be sending us on some kind of suicide mission as the proverbial cannon fodder.'

Noting his exclusion from the list of people with no potential murderous intent for whatever reasons, Ethan added: 'Ah, you lot have absolutely nothing to worry about on my part. I'm 100% harmless. Why would anyone want to capture me is beyond my understanding', with mirth in his voice.

'Well, at least I have no doubts for why you are here.'

From what he could tell, the giant man was the straightforward type, if loud, but not immediately dangerous. Neither Ethan had any reasons for feud with the hitman.
The other, more calm guardsman was too busy flirting with his loved one. Looking at the two, Ethan didn't want to imagine what transpired between them when they were alone.
But the techpriest filled Ethan with a sense of unease, as all his kind had given him was trouble.

'Nice to meet you, 'Specialist Stane'', stated Ethan, the slightest hint of parody in his voice when pronouncing the last part. Looking everyone over again he added pompously: 'You, can call me Ethan.'

The second remark was directed to Nicolo

All the princeling Nicolo gets from the sable savage is a long nod and even longer frown at his answer.

"RAH-hahahaha!" the juggernaut gives vent to a bellow of laughter at the words of he who calls himself 'Ethan'.

His mirth dies down to a low, hard-edged chuckle. "HEH. Heh. Heh. Eh single tiny mosquito can gives grown man fever 'nuff to kill with much pain. A mouse bites yer neck in the night or ****s in yer pott'ry, ye do nuthin' 'bout it an' yer dead. 'Ow 'bout sumfink all know of, say... a serpent. Is small, but kill ye good with teeny bite. Nicolo raised an eyebrow. Apparently the Feral wasn't as dumb as he had previously seemed.
Let's see, his training said, A guardsman infantry 'specialist', a feral who wasn't as stupid as he seemed, a techpriest and a liar with something to hide. Not who I would trust, De Machenko. I wouldn't turn your back to Ethan. The specialist he could probably trust, likely because he didn't seem to be too intelligent, or like the feral, was faking it well. As to the feral...well, if he stayed out of his way, he would be fine.
"As a matter of curiosty, does anyone here speak High Gothic?" Nicolo asked, in near-flawless Malifian High Gothic. It would be good to check. As the guardsman replies, Nicolo smirks. Apparently he wasn't the only one fluent in High Gothic.
"The Cameoline guy? Yeah, I saw him. He could navigate Malfi, too, and that's an achievement," Noticing the Stane's gaze, Nicolo keeps his face carefully blank, running off of years in Malfi's courts.

Stane continues his rituals of maintenance, but the subvocalized chanting stops and he continues the conversation. "Never heard a truer thing in m'life, Trooper. The moment y'think the enemy's weak'n harmless is the moment he sneaks up behind you and shoots you in th' head. Won't be makin' that mistake again." He doesn't take his eyes off of his work, his hands moving surely and mechanically to maintain his beloved weapon. "I doubt the Inquisition would make a mistake on somethin' like this, though. If'n we're here, I reckon there's a good reason for it." He is silent for a minute, then asks, "You said y'saw an aug'd cyclops? Did anyone else see th' other one? Shorter, visor'd and dressed in Chameleoline? I ain't never seen that much blend-cloth in one place before." He seems to just add this on at the end, but anyone paying close attention would notice that his gaze is now wandering about the room, settling on each of its occupants in return and watching for a reaction. Though he seems absorbed in his work, Stane has been paying close attention to the other occupants of the room since he woke.

Stane pauses shortly after Nicolo asks his question, looking up. After a few seconds of what seems to be deep thought, he replies, "To the Honor of the Emperor, I have been Granted the Holy Tongue to Speak to His Glories. Thine Words are not all Known to me, but I Comprehend Thy message." Again, his High Gothic is archaic and slow, but flawlessly perfect in timbre and pronunciation.

Having been quite for a time the Techpriest replies:

"Glory to the Emperor, and to all the Saints, for all mankind,
As it was in the beginning, both now and always, and to the ages of ages. Amen."

Strictly speaking, he did not know the language. It was performed in the singsong cant of a liturgy as opposed to unconcerned ease of fluency. However, he knew basic pieces, he didn't remember from where, but the language was interesting.

Binary was a much more practical tongue, but sadly had not become the lingua franca of mankind.

In low gothic, which sounded at once heavily accented as well as archaic and formalized, "Might I suggest we cease this haphazard way of doing things and proceed more logically?

We were gathered for our skill sets to perform a mission. I would suggest we familiarized ourselves with each other, one at a time and in full. We should then gather data about our environment. Then speculate on why we are here and what we are too do.

Else we shall be as blind men being led by the blind. Or the one eyed man as the case may be."

He almost seemed to chuckle at that.

While the unaware men were chatting away in the bunker about there odd predicament. Outside far more was going on. The harsh desert sands of the feral world Volonx blew unopposed, the grey metal bunker the only decernable landmark for miles. The heavy footsteps faded away as the wind covered the tracks. Standing at the door was the tall augmented figure, pressing the inquisitional I the door creeked and slide open suddenly.

Casual and uncaring the figure stepped into the room filled with tense cautious people. They had woken up exactly as planned...at least none of them had turned violent.
"my name is not for you all to know...my code name is Burnt Rose...call me as such" the disturbing voice echoed out for all to hear. It was synthesised, perhaps disguised? a menacing quality etched into it.

In This 'Burnt Rose's hand was a woman, fair in appearance as well as complection. She had dark hair and the scar across her eye was the only imperfection...that and the common rags covering her. She was tied up and gagged. Ounce the door closed behind Burnt rose the captive being dragged was promptly dropped on the floor, the women letting out a notable squeek. In Burnt Rose's off hand was what was immistakably a bolt pistol, more threatening however were the two barrel fed autoguns held onto her back beside some sort of backpack.

"im sure you all have questions....im here to tell you I dont care for them....My master is in need of a new team of inquisitional acolytes...and you have all been selected due to your skills...knowledge...or lack thereof. As i said..I am Burnt Rose..and I am your superior...now tell me...who here does not wish to serve the Emperor and his most holy Ordo's?" were the final words spoken before a great silence.

all players

OK techpriest, the 'backpack' Burnt rose is carrying is most CERTAINLY a power pack designed for use with power armor yet it is clear said figure is not wearing any. you also determine that the amount of augmentation on this individual is shocking, almost as if entirely augmetic.
Ethan you recognise the cheap type of fabric the captive is wearing (not mira) its definably what you see in most underhive locals.
to the feral Guardsmen, Burnt Rose is covered in what you recognise as Purity seals, youve seen them before on the preists that no doubt would have "checked your level of faith" when you joined up.
To the Sniper, the autoguns on her back have rediculously large drum magazines but are otherwise a standard issue autogun with a few minor adjustments to account for the drums.
To the assasin, you can tell that the boltpistol she has isnt the delicate showroom kind you see in glass cases in the upper parts of the spire..this thing is dirty and well worn in battle.

Crossing and flattening his finger, Uriel looked at the Inquisitor from just over his hands, a tone of board detachment present. His face would have been resting on his index fingers had it been any farther forward.

"In a philosophical sense, I don't desire anything. I am not even an entity which had prior existence, and even in the course of this statement a thing called I has been created and destroyed anew more times then can be counted.

Mistress Burnt Rose, you ask us the wrong question. If we wish or do not wish to serve the Emperor and the Orders of His Holy Inquisition doesn't matter. The question is if we are going to. That is the only choice left to us. We can no more chose what it is we wish then we may change the whole of our past with a thought.

Moreover, we do not even have that choice. Our existence in the past defines an object in the four dimensions of Materium time/space. Our future is also so defined. What we have done and what we will do represents a complete history already laid out. The illusion of choice exists only as a flaw in our perception.

To tell you what you wish to know, I will serve. Before even I began to speak the reality that I would say that was already an immutable fact. Only now that our perception has advanced to it does it appear to have happened.

Do not then attempt to intimidate us or give over to frustration. What will happen is already done.

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,"

In this there is much comfort, for the will of the Emperor is done, and his victory already complete. We carry out the motions which must proceed Him in full knowledge that our success or failure detracts from His plan not at all."

Despite the lecture like content there was no mocking or patronizing in his tone. He spoke like one who cares not for even what he is saying, but speaks because he is compelled or inclined.

Short moments before the door opens, Stane is finishing the Litany of Completion, bolting the barrel of his Long-Las in place. As the door slides open, the bulky Guardsman swiftly reaches out and rams one of his Power Packs into the weapon, readying it for use once more. Seeing the familiar augmented figure enter the room, the Specialist jumps to his feet and stands at attention, watching and listening carefully. The air of military discipline is entirely ruined by the grin that begins to creep across his face.
He listens raptly through the figure's short, disinterested speech, though his smile begins to fade as the Tech-priest's long, difficult and philosophically opaque lecture dominates the room. Finally, he speaks up, "I live for the Emperor, and will follow His Divine Will in all things." He speaks slowly and carefully, and some of his usual accent disappears from his voice with an obvious effort. Nonetheless, it remains quite noticable, especially to those who have been listening to his speech recently. "I will obey the orders of your master, 'Burnt Rose'."

He still somehow managed to have a snooze with all the trampling and bellowing of the mammoth-like guardsman.

Ethan woke up at the sound of the door sliding and grinding the sand in the process, then opened one eye to take a peek at who had come to pay them a visit.
'No rest for me today', he muttered, sighing loudly.

Ethan glanced at the gagged girl and said with ill-concealed distaste in his voice: 'You, inquisitors. .... ..'

He listened through the speech with a highly distrustful expression on his face.
'Pff, there goes the obvious. Captured by some obscure machine-people. Working for the Inquisition. Thinly veiled threats of termination otherwise. And running with a bunch of fanatics, no less.'
With disheartened submissiveness he voiced what was on his mind: 'I don't really have much of a choice, do I?'
'We'll have a talk later. With you, sadistic bucket-o-bolts and your pimp with a kidnapping fetish', Ethan convinced himself.

Commenting on the techpriest's long-winded speech, Ethan remarked: 'Wow, thats some blue streak you had there, man. First time I see metal-man hitting on metal-fem, but it looks like your skills aren't enough to melt this iron lady.'

'What is this?..', asked Ethan, pointing a finger at the girl sprawled on the floor. 'Doesn't look much more... skillful or knowledge...able than other common folk... peppering the streets', he finished, imitating the toneless voice of Burnt Rose.

As Nicolo said "Lord Burnt Rose", Ethan glanced over him, hemmed and shook his head. His expression clearly read: 'You, my friend, are hopeless.'

'I by no means wanted to insult our almighty 'employers',' elaborated Ethan.

'Simply pointed out the futility of the priest's weak-willed philosophic ramblings. He had to shoot his load, even if it was so very obvious anyway. He just had to. Oh, wait, he didn't have a choice, according to him.'

"You ask us, Lord Burnt Rose, as if we had a choice. You have been testing us since we have been here, and the presence of escape routes in this bunker confirms it. If I did not wish to serve the Inquisiton, you would likely find me dying out there," Or dead by your hand, Nicolo adds silently.
Everyone else seemed to be responding as could be expected, the tech priest gave a long, philosophical, if somewhat unnecessary speech, Stane once more proved enthusiastic for killing things, and the other one, who called himself Ethan, seemed to be taking pains to insult their new employer. Nicolo would have sighed.
In the back of his mind, Nicolo briefly wondered what happened to the last team, and decided not to ask.

fkshhh-kk!

Suddenly slide ope', doors of steel and steam
Speech within is stilled, the men's eyes turning
And there strides in, the figure from that dream
The red eye burns, bearer's great guns gleaming

Adti Urpna, the barbarian Guardsman
Swings swift the RATAT-spear ever-ready
No thought needed, one are man and weapon
Finger on the trigger, aim is steady

Aug'd cyclops and captive in his sights
Surprise's moment passed... and then he thinks
Recalls the doom un-met... and the dream's lights
Slowly lowers his gun and then he blinks

Fist rises in salute, then slams on chest
"My sword strikes only fer th'Emperor's best"

The figure in the doorway was well trained, Burnt Rose stood there and waited for the no doubt frustrated probably scared individuals in the room to say there lot. It was a pity the Tech priest and the underhiver had SO much to say.

"Im Afraid Mech-Write that your gibberish is best spent conversing with mechine Spirits....because while i owe them my life..my faith is based firmly in the Ecclisiarchy." The figure said before turning to the Soldiers.
"I never for a moment expected anything less from the Imperiums soldiers."
Then Burnt Rose turned to Ethan...who had been so...vocal.
"Understand quickly underhive scum...your humor is falling upon the wrong ears...and to insult the man who will likely unjam your weapons is dangerous if you ask me."
Burnt Rose then leant down to untie the women laying on the ground, no sooner had she done it that the girl took off and ran behind Nicolo. She was positivly frightened. clinging to the man in order to hide from Burnt Rose.

"Noble...i would have thought you to be thankful...when we collected you there was a rather large number of people wishing you dead."
When Burnt Rose was done adressing each of the new team a data slate was taken out from a side pocket and tossed into the Tech-Priests grasp.
"Upon that is a map of the sorrounding desert..marked is the next bunker...You are to take that women...and get her to the bunker safely....There are several other teams carrying rations out in the desert...and they have all been told to kll her...they will kill you if nessisary."
Burnt Rose begins to walk our of the bunker.
"Consider this your field test...good luck gentlemen" was all The figure said before leaving the bunker. The doors whooshed shut and the distinct sound of a hover craft whirring its engines could be heard...as could the sounds of it getting distant very quickly.

"OH by the emperor thank him its gone....i thought it was going to kill me like it did the others...." The women said regaining her composure and stepping away from the assasin with a gentle blush across her cheeks.
"We have to get to the bunker quickly...i saw the other teams...they will be heading this way..."

there are "teams" trying to kill her and you from the looks of it. From the looks of the map ( looks like a screen shot from orbit zoomed in) it will probably take a full day and night to get there...assuming you want to march the whole distance..and dont get slowed down by the rough terraign of the desert.

Nicolo silently looked behind him as the woman hid behind him, with his eyebrows nearly at his hairline.
Inside his head, he ran over Burnt Rose's remarks. It would appear that House Machenko was still after him. Apparently being kidnapped by the Inquisition didn't change his status as a man wanted by one of the sector's great houses. Not that he had expected it to. However, He would wish the assassins luck finding him, though. He was *this* close to going fully underground; new name (and papers), new past, new face.
Nicolo wasted no time in drawing his knife and prying open the grate he had seen earlier with it, after checking it for traps of some kind. The faster they got out of here, the better. He turned to the rest of the team.
Search (untrained perception), if possible. Should I roll that?
"Okay, we don't have much time. Adti, can you fit in there? The faster we get out of here the better. Tech-father, what does the map say? How close are we to our destination?" Nicolo quickly fires off the questions, using what he knew of team-based (and the team) operations to formulate a plan. He figured the guardsman, as burly as he was, should be able to survive an ambush if there was one after they left the building.
There was something about the woman that bothered him though. Resolving not to turn his back on her on the spot, Nicolo quickly ran his eyes over the rest of the team he was now paired with. Two, apparently trigger happy guardsmen, a techpriest that waxed philosophical and a man who insisted he was completely harmless. And him, a noble assassin that was possibly the most moral person in his family. This had so many opportunities to go bad.

Youll require a str test to open the grate.

i rolled for you to speed things up (hope you dont mind)
and you passed with 2 degrees of success...nice.

The grate pulls off its hinges rather easily having been pried open with the blade. There appears to be nothing blocking the vent system but a fan that collapsed when you tugged on the grating. It appears as if the vent goes all the way to the roof although you strapping lads will need to make a contortionist test (agillity test) or get stuck, the women could probably get in with ease.

"I could fit...i used to hide in the vents in the underhive...some tight squeezes.....i know how the door opens from the other side to...theres this thing..she pressed it" The women spoke out, no doubt in a hurry to leave this aweful place.

"Im sorry sirs...i probably shouldnt speak out of place...my names Ash by the way.." she continues meekily

"Far enough that we will have to deal with this other cortege. I can go longer without rest then you, but at standard human speed I estimate thirty six plus or minus twelve hours.

I suggest we forsake this position. Our opposition possesses supplies while we lack them. Based on this map data, I believe our best stratagem should be to eliminate this kill team and acquire their weapons and consumables.

What are the long range capabilities of all of you? I am not well armed. Due to our enemies target of this girl, I propose she and at least one bodyguard stay here. The others should prepare an ambush for our pursuers.

Stane listens to the hulking Inquisitorial agent quietly, but this time there is no smile, and as the mission is laid out his mouth droops downward into a heartfelt grimace. Damned escort mission, and not a heretic in sight? Nonetheless, as Burnt Rose makes to leave the Guardsman quickly salutes (it?her?eh). "Orders understood, Sir! We won't let y'down." After the doors close, Stane turns to the deathly frightened young woman. "Don't you worry, little miss. Just keep calm and be careful and we'll get you t'the bunker n'one piece." He pats her on the shoulder with one large gloved hand, then walks to the side of the Tech-priest and begins studying the map on the data-slate.

He turns his head shortly at Niccolo's comment, then looks back at the slate and replies, "I'm no expert on deserts, but it looks like we're at least a day away. Lots'a open ground 'tween here'n there, though. Might be best to take a roundabout route, find ourselves a good place to hunker down for a couple'a hours of sleep 'fore headin' out for the final approach." Seeing that the Noble has already pried open the ventilation shaft, Stane grins again. "That's smart thinkin', friend. We can send somebody up top to cover our exit. Anyhow, I reckon we've got two choices if'n we want to do this right. Up north is a big ol' rock outcroppin', looks like it could hide and shelter the lot of us. Or, we can head out west, looks like there's a fair bit of cover out that way too. Both routes are about the same distance." As he talks, Stane begins stripping off his camo-cloak, wadding it up into a tight package and tying it off with a rope. The grey-brown camo of his flak armour and uniform are a slightly better fit for the desert sands, though he's regretful to lose the extra covering the cloak provides.
In reply to the Tech-priest's question, Stane grins and pats his long-las. "Thirty-six confirmed fatalities, most of 'em never knowing 'till they found themselves meetin' the Emp'rer's Divine Judgement. If the enemy give me a target, Vera'n I will send them to meet the rest."

"I should like to point out that removing that grate as you have is a desecration. Its machine spirit may be small and quiescent, but it will still have to be propitiated for this.

I would also like to remind you that you should not take pleasure or any pride save professional in killing these opponents. They are humans just as we, and it is not given to us to restore life that has been taken.

The eastern route is to be avoided I think. The canyon would be an excellent place to be ambushed. Keep in mind that any deviation from a direct course will also lengthen the time required.

Now, if we are all done planning for the distant future, may we focus on the immediate? We must neutralize the threat posed to us by the nearby kill team. I propose ambush. Does anyone have a better plan or a relevant objection?

Moreover, in the future, can we try to keep conversations on point when matters of life and death are concerned? Speculation about what we will do later requires that there be a later."

i rolled a common lore (tech) test for you which you passed by 5. not degrees :P just 5

Anyway, you can tell that the door must be automatic from what you saw of it, only a few possibilities come to mind. 1) theres a sensor you cannot see?
2) Burnt Rose had some kind of specal proximity key that opens it. Though that would be over complicated for a machine with such a simple machine spirit.
or 3) the most likely, is that the key pad on this side of the bunker has been removed or replaced somewhere else.

You also passed a perception test, there is a small panel beside the door that has been bolted, its out of place with the other side of the door and there would be no reason for the small square patch to be there. You assume that behind it is no doubt circutry you can probably access.

Nicolo draws the ripper pistol, which looks vaguely like a long barreled, thick stub automatic with a red dot laser sight attached. It's matte black finish seems to radiate deadliness.
Nicolo briefly shows a vampiric smile, and his face reverts to it's former emotionlessness. Control, de Machenko. Control, He chided himself. There was no need to let his companions see to much of him. Hi...other people might become monsters. Nicolo didn't intend to.
"Okay, let's go. Stane, I'll cover you when I get up there," Nicolo says, preparing to squeeze up the duct once Stane has gotten up.

'Screw these metal-people, pretending to bicker, then standing by each other at the end of the day.'

This ****'s definitely hilarious. Earlier he had imagined the captors might pit them to fight against each other in some kind of arena for their amusement. But that was before they turned out to be Inquisition. Now, they're the Inqusition's pet gladiators, just on a larger scale and in a more complex game. What an irony!

Upon Rose's exit he spoke out: 'Finally, some action. Thought I was going to have a dreadfully dull debate with the techpriest on the fallacy of his beliefs.'

Then mentally commented on Nicolo's words. 'Looks like we got ourselves a self-nominated leader, he even sounds rather confident, maybe I should let him boss me around for now.'

He carefully considered the priest's words. Setting up an ambush is a decent tactic, but one that can be easily turned against the attackers. Our main weakness is the lack of knowledge of the surrounding terrain, disregarding several landmarks shown on the map. The weakness that our opponents don't have, as they had the opportunity to cross the desert to our bunker, at least.
Ethan then started reminisce about the time when he had to pay a visit to Dirty Gob and got carelessly caught in an ambush.

When Ash introduced herself, Ethan approached her and declared, with a reassuring smile: 'Oh, hello there. Ethan.' A hand outstretched, waiting for Ash to shake it.
'I assume you were a part of the previous team to take part in these games?'
Her answer made him wondering whether she was telling the truth.
'Why do you think the Inquisition would abduct such charming gal as yourself in the first place?'
'Sadly, I guess you are just an incentive, something to encourage us play our part of the game and the opposition's. But don't be afraid, we'll get you out safe. I will protect you personally.'
'Though, I'm almost definitely sure what the Inquisition will do to you after our merry little test is over.' he added to himself.
'Oh, and what others were you referring to, when mentioned Rose killing some people?'

After the introductions, whistling, Ethan proceeded to rummage through his backpack. Shortly, announced by an "Aha", he pulled out some kind of device. Still whistling merrily, he came up to the grate in the ceiling, fully ignoring the others gathered around.
One eye closed and the tip of his tongue pulled out, Ethan aimed the device into the opening. With a quiet clank, it shot a hook, that firmly attached itself in the wall of the duct, followed by a length of rope.
Then Ethan pressed a button on the grapnel and started ascending into the hole. After successful entry, he extracted the hook and stored the device in one of the pants' pockets.
'If I don't come back in 15 minutes - consider me croaked!' he said, while re-emerging from the ventilation duct, and moved on, laughing.

"They looked like any ordinary hivers...just with you know...guns and stuff." She said before Turning back to Ethan.

"Safer then without them i guess."

As Ethan and Stane crawl through the wires and coolant pipers within the vent they notice the bunker itself seems very worn..rather old. after dozen minutes of crawling they come across the purifier in the way of there exit. With a simple push and shove it falls out and onto the cieling. For miles you see only sand dunes and the growns of the wind passing through. The bunker indeed has parapits...if worn. The north side having a metal step ladder down onto the sand. The door being on the east side. The guardsmen stane readies his lasgun and peers down the sights.

Seeing a figure, he calls out softly to his companion on the roof. "Contact. Range; 700 metres. Armed and surveiling the bunker. Should I take the shot?" The Guardsman, normally expressive and active, is now utterly calm and virtually unmoving, his voice a drab monotone. He sights down his rifle with practiced ease, expertly settling his sights on the target and calculating distance and windspeed almost reflexively.

Sand sand everywhere and not a drop to drink. Comes to mind when describing the surroundings. Its hot the scorching rays already causing the two men on the top of the bunker to sweat. The bunker despite no doubt being very heavy, didnt appear to have sunken into the sand to much and appeared stable. You should be clear, Ethan, but I'll keep watch 'case anyone's still around." The sniper maintains a close watch over the surrounding area, moving around from time to time to get a better view and throw off the aim of anyone trying to zero in on him. Thanks, Vera. Having been chanting to himself in binary, the red robed figure finally raises his head. He stares at the guardsmen for a moment as if just noticing him before replying,

"I shall do as I am able."

Reaching into an inner pocket he pulls forth an arcane looking tool, set to work on the panel near the door. The tool itself appeared to be a simple screwdriver at on end, and some sort of light on the other. One shouldn't disregard whimsy.

"Domine in nomine Dei Imperator. Through the act of my humble contrition through the acknowledgment of my failing I beseech you not by the will of the Machine God, but in accordance with it. Through the contrition of humanity have all peoples come into accord with your function; which was, though yet unknown, since time began most perfect and pure.

I in the humility of wisdom request that you allow me permission to align you again with your function, without impairment, that you may again be as you are meant to be, unmixed and unmixing.

As the tech priest examines the world before him it quickly becomes apparent that the doorway is facing roughly east. The sand stretches out for miles with no specific land mark within sight. There are sand dunes surrounding them on all sides as the bunker appears to have been placed in a 'valley' of sorts.
Other then the large amount of sand..and a flamng corpse in the far distance..there is nothing of note.

"Excellent. I applaud your abilities, Tech Father. We should probably head for the bunker, then. I feel it might be best to avoid wasting any time," Nicolo says, scanning the area around them.
This team was proving to be less dysfuntional than he had originally thought, between himself and the 'competely harmless' Ethan, the alternately laconic and loquatious tech priest, and the two guardsmen, he had expected more personality clashes than had already occured.
"It occurs to me that I still haven't given my name. I am Nicolo De Machenko, of Great House Machenko," What was the use of giving your name if you couldn't overwhelm people with it? He though to himself. Besides, they already probably think I'm an arrogant *******.

Looks like the rest of the area's clear, though." A short time later, his helmeted head appears over the parapets. "Might be that we're in the clear for now. It was as the diligent guardsmen returned to his post that he saw it. The flaming corpse that he had recently added to his kill count was being dragged slowly backwards over the dune and edging out of sight.
Taking aim ounce more it was obvous what was occuring. The scouts friends were obviously there, hiding behind the thick sand. One of them had crawled up and grabbed hold of the mans leg and was ever so slowly dragging him back.
Although it was hard to tell..the long hair suggested the person trying to drag this body back into cover was a women.

DaedalusMkV
If you are to take the shot, most of her body is in cover. her arm and head are not. Normally cover is meant to have an AP however since this is THICK sand, and all you have is a lasgun..any shot not hitting the head or arm is discounted.

Stane grunts, then resumes his posture, relaxing and taking deep, long breaths. He doesn't bother warning his comrades this time; the engagement is begun, and there's no time to waste. God-Emperor, guide the flight, Watch the target, take the unworthy's life. Again, the prayer is short and concise. Finally, the Guardsman is ready and the distinctive *crack* of his Long-Las accompanies another destructive blast of weaponized light.

You know I'm taking this shot. Male or female, they're all enemies, and every one killed now is one that we won't get ambushed by later, and possible a whole bunch too terrified to actually try to engage us.
Full-round Aim, again, then Standard Aim and fire. I dunno if this target's unaware or not, so I'll just roll it up and let you decide. They shouldn't get outside of my range in those two rounds, but that's again your call.
[roll0] vs 38+20(full aim)+10(half aim)+10(Accurate)+10(Braced)-20(Called Shot:Head), possibly +30 (Surprised), that's your call. Target score is either 68 or 98, dependent on that Surprised status.

i.e youve delt 23 wounds which toughness and armor will be deducted from.

Afterwards the underhiver approached the door and began examining it by clearing the sand off the panel which held the keypad, to get a better look.
That was when, announced by a gritting sound, the door started sliding open again, which startled Ethan a little.
The techpriest's robed head showed up through the opening.

"Young lady, may I offer you some advice?

There is never a situation where worrying over a problem is beneficial. If the situation is beyond your power, then it is out of your control and you may do nothing. There is no need to worry, because you have done nothing, neither wrong nor right.

When a situation is within your power you either act, or you do not. In this case you made a choice. The choice you make is the best you can see at the time and so is, in that way, above reproach. Later, better information does not change the fact that it was the best choice apparent when it was made. In such a situation, worry not, for your choice is vindicated by situation.

Therefore, do not worry. It aids not, resolves not, comforts not. Seek to understand your situation so when the time comes you may make your choice in full knowledge of what you do."

'They are all like that.' - Ethan replied to her question in a grave voice.

He didn't answer her second question though, as his mind went wandering on the outcomes of their cruel test, related to Ash. Her fate was rather grim. No way the inquisitor is going to let her live if they succeed. She was a nobody, like countless others living and dying in the underhive, a stimulus for them to do it right, maybe an extra handicap. His heart sank as he found himself unable to come up with a way for her to get out of it alive.
But one day, this overconfident bastard of an inquisitor will get on his ass the retribution he deserves.
And maybe, just maybe, he was taking it too seriously and replaced the concern for one girl he cared greatly about with another in the absense of the former one. Ash could as well be an inqusitorial agent, perfectly playing the role of a simple scared underhive girl.
He should think this over and consider carefully, not get too attached and keep a sharp eye on her.

The beds themselves are obviously temporary set ups. There made of collapsable metal with a thin matress on them. The metal of them would provide Ap 4 to anything behind them due to there thin nature.
The walls of the bunker are hardened military constructions so thats AP 15 right there. the door is reinforced to discourage breaching so that is AP 18.
The parapits provide a AP of 15 on the cieling.

"I hear ye, St'n!" Adti barks up at the Specialist's report.

Finishing with his aid at constructing the barricade of beds, he hurdles the bed-block barrier and lands in a ready crouch outside the bunker. His smile is no longer that of a tribal warrior defending his homeland, no longer that of a man pursuing a maid, no longer that of a berserk fighting against hopeless odds...

...it is the smile of an Imperial Guardsman, doing his duty.

Urpna's fist knocks twice on the ceiling, or at least, on the bottom of the doorframe and calls out, "'Edds up! Watch 'em an' cover me, gunna try an' flank 'em an' flush 'em out fer ye!"

Baring his teeth at the desert heat, he takes off on a brisk run across the sand in a tangential angle from where he sees the burning husks of the heretics Stane had spotted... and scorched. Having spent his youth in the Banite badlands, he knows to stay in the cover of what dunes and eddies may present themselves, if not against the heat, then against inevitable incoming fire.

RRAADADADADADT!

Some distance down, and hopefully on their foes' flank, he braces himself and pulls the trigger and lets loose a withering volley. Spent casings patter down into the sand at his feet, hot lead screaming towards their pursuers' last known location.

Erm... run some ways towards the enemy and some to the side, in order to flank them. If we're ta graph it, uh... diagonal line away from bunker door, hopefully coming up horizontal with enemy's last known location, hopefully either getting a clear shot at them or driving them out of cover so't they be an even better shot for Stane.

The initial excitement as the large burly feral charged out from the bunker and over the dunes...only to find noone there.
No tracks..nothing...indeed nothing but the flaming burnt corpse of the first person Stane had killed. Upon inspection..his clothes had burnt..his meat sizzled to charcoal and nothing left recognisable on him.

"Fer theh Emp'rer!" comes Adti's warcry as he walks his fire in towards the where the heretics were last seen, where flames and smoke still lick up from the corpses Stane had made. He crests the dune and charges in, barrel blazing and blade bared...

...only to stop short in shock and consternation. There was a charred husk in the cover of the dune, yes, but enough for only one body. There was no trace of the second kill, nor of the third hand to drag them away.

The feral's brow furrows and he crouches low, bending his wisdom of the wilds towards finding these fiends that bedevil their path. With eye and ear and hand, he searches. Even his wide-nostriled nose flares and twitches as he seeks... and fails to find.

He turns... and stumbles back in shock, his jaw dropping. The body has disappeared, from the acrid scent of smoke to the faintest fleck of fused flesh and fabric. The only tracks he could find are his own. Thinking that they may have burrowed beneath the sand and could simply be lying in wait under the surface, he empties his magazine into the dune and into the sands around him.

When the smoke settles and he stops to reload, he realizes what was missing... he had so long been using autoguns that he does not at first ascertain what it is that is niggling at the back of his mind. And then it dawns on him--- the magazine in his hand should be lighter and empty of bullets, and yet its inside still gleams with its full complement of projectiles.

Urpna checks behind him along his trail and then goggles at the sight--- simply his own footprints in the sand, bereft of a breadcrumb trail of spent cartridges. "The Emperor protects... Emp'rer pertects... p'tects..." Makng the sign of the Aquila over his chest with a frenzied hand, he takes a single swig from his canteen, then jogs back to the bunker.

When he arrives there, he calls the others together and reports his findings. "Comma 'ere y'all an' hark well. There ain't nuthin' there. NUTHIN. No tracks, no killteam, no heretics, no corpses, nothin'. I went right there, did cunferm ONE very crispy burnt body--- too crispy, though. Couldn't loot NUTHIN. I turned ta look fer tracks of 'is teammates, but NUTHIN, an' then that husk of a corpse disappeared right unner me nose."

This report he caps off by showing the others his unspent magazine. "'Ere, y'all. Y'all all saw that I went a-shootin', earlier? Emptied this thing, I was SURE of it, then when I stopped ta reload, was 'sif this thing was fresh from the man'factorium's belts"

Slapping the magazine back in and pulling back the slide, Urpna mutters while crossing himself, "I be the last ta complain that I ain't usin' up 'ny bullets as I shoot, but that there? Warpcraft, methinks" Glaring, he spits virulently, "But sure as th'Emp'rer pertects, just lemme get a hand on them buggers an' there be sure a reck'ning"

Spotting Stane, he fixes him with a glare and asks, "'Ey shooter. Check yer 'cell. See if'n tis spent at all, eh?"

~~~~
Urpna passes the hours by lending his strength to helping the others however way he can... though every so often he casts suspicious stares at their charge, Ash. Maybe she's a witch and bringing her to where she is to be properly purged is what our test is? Or... Burnt Rose, Ash... and las-shot bodies that burn like they were hit by a Flamer or a Melta-blast? Sumfink ain't right here...
When the group gets up to leave their bunker, the feral growls at the others, "Prince Falls-on-Is-Ass, on point. I'll be twenny paces ahind o' ye, lefflank. Padre Uriel, take th'right. Ethan-King-of-Harmlessness, guard the girl. Maak ye certain no ill comes to her... or of her. Spesh'Tane, rearguard. Stay sharp y'all, don't frak nuthin' up. Emp'rer pertects"
---
Stane nods at Urpna's statement. "A good marchin' order. I'll watch your backs." He packs up all of his gear and his balled-up Camo Cloak, stowing it quickly around his person, then sets out after the rest. Warpcraft... What could that mean?
Through understanding faith is made stronger. It is written, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for."
To simply agree, without understanding is blasphemy against your God... Emperor given mind and sense. To have in your possession a human mind and faculty for reason and discernment, yet not to use it, it to possess a weapon and to give it over to your enemy."
All this was said on the march, which might not have been fair to the dry mouths of the others.
Ash had said very little while the rest of the group discussed and got ready for there journey.
When the topic of witch craft came up she seemed to withdraw obviously sheepish on the subject.
"I didn't see anything myself Ethan...i dont like this one bit though..." She said before smiling at the notion that it would be Ethan guarding her.
"I promise i wont be to much trouble." she said keeping close by.
Ok so were heading North, the total distance is 40km which is a full days journey at regular speed..due to the heat and rough terraign of the desert it will give everyone a single level of fatigue.
Am i to assume that Nicolo will be scouting ahead with Stane as was discussed? with Urpna leading point with everyone else?
Stane takes to his role as rearguard with alacrity, carafully watching the group's flanks and occasionally checking the rear. Roughly once an hour, but at random, hard to predict intervals he drops back and waits for a few minutes to see if any enemies are pursuing, then hustles back to his normal position.
Stane's response to the Tech-Priest comes slowly and reluctantly, the soldier clearly unwilling to criticize. "I don't undertand, Keeper of the Spirits. I follow the Creed, 'cause to do otherwise would be to deny all that the Emp'rer does for us. I do my best to follow His Will, but I don't see why I need to know 'bout philos'phy to do it. That's why we have the 'Cclesiarchy, and your own Holy Order, isn't it?"
Sable savage seeing prince unmoving
Growls at craven cur a-fidgeting
Takes vanguard. Striding first 'cross sand
Says naught. Beckons with his hand
Flags not, through waning might
Silent stalks the night
Come to great rock
Simp' sip, bit of bite
Prays to Emp'rer's starlight
From his belt whips out, stone strand
"Once was wielded by Ohk-Aam's hand
Slew my first-betrothed. He died screaming."
At one end of the outcrop sits, settling...
...saying to the others, "So... How y'all a-want ta do tha watches?"
Nicolo shrugs and follows the large and somewhat agressive feral, keeping an eye on the surrounding area. It would probably be better to allow the man-mountain to continue snorting and posturing. It wasn't any different from what everyone else seemed to be doing anyway.
"Lead on, Adti,"
Ethan had no clue what the **** the priest was talking about, so decided to ignore his speech.
'Right behind you.'
He kept observing the horizon with magnoculars periodically, until it was too dark to tell a thing.
Ethan will be keeping the pace with Ash and following Adti.
It was a long and hard journey. With the aid of the map and the direction of the scorching sun they made there way up and down the sandy slopes and dunes. Indeed the sand seemed to go on forever, yet still they marched.
They seemed to be alone, nothing to be seen for miles. Now and then they would pass strange tracks in the sand...tracks none could recognise.
After 10 long hard hours of marching the rock formation could be seen on the horizon. It was a large rocky mountain, bent around like a half circle. The natural formation seemed to break out of the sand itself.
It seemed to curve around providing a long shade from the blaring heat. A perfect place to rest.
The party made there way to the base, the top being unclimbable. Setting up behind a series of fallen crumbled rocks. It would be a fine defensive position should there be an attack....it was rather strange in fact. Could these rocks have been moved to these positions? they surrounded the site almost perfectly...could this be a well known stopping ground?...perhaps other tests had occured here?
"Does this strike anyone else as odd? A nice, defensible position out of the way of the sunlight, while we are being hunted through a throne-cursed dessert?" Nicolo's voice is curiously emotionless, as though the trek through the dessert drained any emotion from him, rather than any energy. His posture still seems the same: arrogant, proud and somewhat catlike, but the look in his eyes is different, like he was somewhere else.
This isn't safe, Nicolo, the voice in the back of his head said. Let the guardsman, that feral one go in first. Let him fall victim to any traps there.
That might reflect badly on me, Nicolo countered. If he dies, while I have assumed leadership of our little band, it could be blamed on me.
This is the inquisition, they don't care about casualties if they are sending you here, the voice in the back of his head whispered. It won't matter.
It will reflect better on me if they all live. Perhaps there is a future here. There's no telling how far I could go if I show competance here.
Nicolo smiled.
"Shall we make camp here for the night?"
"Might want to check it out first, friend. That looks like a very good place for the enemy to lay an ambush, and this'd be the time t'do it." Stane sounds tired, but he still moves quickly. This sort of long-distance trek is nothing new to him. "Ethan, maybe grab those Magnos of yours and take a look from a diff'rent angle. Can't be too careful." With that, the Specialist heads a few feet away from the group and drops to one knee, then uses his rifle's scope to survey the rock formation. This whole thing's been goin' too well. The hammer's gotta drop soon, and to the Warp if I won't be glad when it does... "Never was good at waitin'..." The Guardsman whispers under his breath as he continues to search for any hint of an enemy presence.
everyone
been looking over the marching distances....anyone with an AG bonus of 2 has a level of fatigue.
You see nothing in the clearing, in fact the 'proposed' camp site has a rock base rather then it being just sand. i.e theres sand blowing across it e.t.c...but its ultimatly part of teh rock face.
EDIT:
Upon closer inspection, there is a small ridge above the proposed campsite. big enough for one ..maybe two people. However getting to it is impossible without dedicated climbing equipment or experience. The heght of the ridge is 10 meters up. climb test is +20 to those who have equipment. you may make a full action climb test to scale half your moverate upwards. I.e takes on average 4 tests + 4 rounds to scale it.
argh :P climbing rules annoy me. if you have equipment you can climb it with no test needed assuming you take your time.
Specialist's proposal made sense. This whole place seemed unnatural, perhaps even too convenient.
Regardless, someone has to take a look at the encompassing territory. Though it might've been hilarious to watch one of them slip and plummet down, right now he needed all of them intact to survive himself. Plus, he could score a few bonus points for risking his own life and thus earning their trust.
Ethan threw back his head to observe what he was up against and whistled in uncertainty. That was one hazardous hell of a climb.
He fell prey to doubt and to instinct of self-preservation at once. This enterprise was probably too damn reckless even for someone like him. After all, he wasn't THAT suicidal.
Eventually, firm in his resolve, Ethan put an end to this quandary. 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained' - he had concluded.
The man took out the grapnel from the backpack, aimed it several meters above the ledge he was going to ascend to and proceeded to scale the ridge.
'Watch the girl in my absence.'
Missed a typo somehow.
He is going to climb up the ledge and observe their immediate surroundings first, the panorama with magnoculars second.
Ethan stays lying in position, observing the surrounding sands, cause the odd tracks they've seen earlier worry him.
He will leave the post when it becomes too dark to see anything.
Ethan moved past the various rock formations and fired his grapple up to the ridge. The ascent wasnt easy but with time he found himself on the small rock outcropping giving him a good view of the area. He couldnt spot anything out of the ordinary. Indeed when he passed and climbed over the rocky ground to get to the ridge he noticed little of importance either. Could this strange position simply be coincidence?
EDIT:
Also everyone, it is only JUST starting to get dark. consider this Twilight hour. It was fairly obvious as you were marchng that this planets day/night cycle must be a long one clearly not 24 hours long.
"The possibility that this environment was designed or converted into an Inquisitorial testing ground appear to be approaching one. If we are being appropriately paranoid there may be some form of trap or ambush to be expected during the night. I suggest we sleep with our weapons close at hand."
The feral Guardsman breathes easily through his wide nostrils, but already his uniform, though not as soaked as would that of someone from a temperate climate, is still rank with sweat. His long legs and sure stride carry him far on an easy gait, surging through the sand like some inexorable juggernaut.
On arriving at the northern outcropping, his legs throb from the exertion, but not to a too discomfiting a degree. To Uriel's pronouncement, Adti answers, "When do we not, Padre? Huh. An' a-speakin' o' weapons, do ye
have a piece? Got some spare guns if ye be needin'" And if the Tech-Adept does ask, he will hand over one of his secondary weapons, just so that nobody among them is unarmed.
As the others scout upward and inward, he calls out, "Makin' th' round, patrollin' the per'metre" Fitting deed to word, he strides out over sand and stone, scouring their prospective campsite from the outer reaches, slowly spiraling his course inwards, his scrabbling hands and feet recalling the rocks of his homeland and indeed, the mountain on which he had taken his vision-rite like all the tribal champions before him. There, at every stretch of sand, and every swerve of stone, he hones his hunter's senses, looking out for anything that should be out of the ordinary, anything that might point to any pursuers or ambushers, or anything at all of use that may have been left there by previous travelers.
Along the way to the summit, in the deepening darkness of the young night, he hears a sudden scraping on the stone. He flattens himself against the rock wall, readying his rifle...
...then relaxes when he realizes it is only Ethan.
And then he realizes something, concern and trepidation colouring his voice... "Hey Harmless. If yer here... who's guarding the girl?"
With that, he takes off down the ridge for where the Techpriest and the girl were left, rifle ready just in case there might not be enough of a defense around their charge.
After scouting out the rock outcropping, Stane rejoins the group and goes with them to take shelter in the defensible position. "Well, if you two are takin' first watch, I'll take the opportunity to get some shuteye." With that said, he approaches the robed Tech-Priest and bows, his weapon held out in two hands. "Keeper of the Spirits, would you do me the honour of reconsecratin' my weapon?"
Exthalion
"Indeed, I would be glad to, for the spirit of this weapon is potent."
Carefully he lifts the long laz and raised it level with his head. Before each phrase he utters it in Binary then translates into low gothic for the benifit of the specialist.
"Blessed be thy secret name, hidden from the eyes of the unworthy.
Revered be thy make and pattern which you have brought honor this day.
Hallowed be thy function, from the STC derived.
Honored be thy working, which you carry out without fail.
Venerated be thy purpose, service to mankind and its Emperor."
He looked down at Stane,
"Guard this weapon well, for it is your life.
Uphold this weapons honor and increase it.
Respect this weapons needs for they are your own.
In proper devotion to this weapon you show proper devotion to mankind.
Together strike down the enemies of mankind.
Together uphold the honor of mankind.
Together do your duty to mankind.
Together be exalted, or together you shall fall."
Carefully he places the rifle back on the guardsman's upraised hands.
"It is done."
everyone
You guys rock, im loving how everyone roleplays so well
The acolytes poured over the surrounding terraign carefully and well prepared. There fatigue did not stop them, nor keep them from keeping catious.
The Girl, Ash was indeed minding her own buisness when Adti came running back, halting and watching her closely. She did not feel welcomed here....they didnt trust her.
The tech priest consecrated the weapon, the Lasgun letting out a hum of approval when the rights were finished. Stane watching diligently over the entire procedure.
Ethan stayed on the ridge looking out over the entire perimeter...nothing to be seen....
"I think ill get some rest...im awefully tired..." the girl said before finding a spot away from the others, nestling down and trying to rest on the harsh rockface.
Stane bows again and respectfully takes back the Long-Las. "Thank you, Keeper. I'll do my best to honor this Trust." Stane slowly backs away from Uriel, bows a third time, and turns around. Now that he's cared for his weapon, Stane turns to his own needs. "When it's my turn to take up the Watch, wake me up. 'Till then, I'll take what sleep I can get." With that, the Specialist finds a crack or hollow in one of the rocks to shelter in, then wedges himself in and wraps himself in his camo-cloak, cradling his weapon in his arms. Within five minutes he closes his eyes and falls asleep almost instantly, a remarkably common skill in the Imperial Guard.
Urpna bows his head and holds his peace while the priest performs the blessing.
Emp'rer's balls, dass sum good prayerin', that there is, right there...
When the others drift off to sleep, he, however settles into the sentinel's stride, keeping a close watch upon his sleeping comrades. Adti paces the perimeter of the camp, making the rounds at the outer edge of the ring of rocks that is their place of rest and respite, senses keen to any untoward rustle or flash or scent.
This he alternates with some good sitting down first at one boulder at the foot of the ridge, and then the other, all the while keeping watch on both the outside and the inside of their camp. By now, he has his rifle's strap cinched a tad tighter and his laspistol drawn, so that in case some intruders come a-raiding in the night, he can use the latter as a sort of shock tracer which he can follow up with his... miraculous [or is it accursed?] slug-spitter.
The third stage of his patrol is a good long sit-down at a rock near the sleeping Ash-girl. Urpna breathes the cold night air easily, but scowls deeply as he considers their charge... on the one hand how she had become shy and withdrawn when the subject of warpcraft was brought up earlier... and on the other hand how she is, [or appears to be] just a frightened girl, a lamb between the wolves' fangs and the shepherd's knives.
Young like... the... thing that was... my brother... Young like Udma, huh, wonder how they are, back home? Yet, could be a witch... or not? HAVE ta get 'er, alive to that other place... but...? If she's guilty, why would she hide, and indeed, have been brought to us so bound? But if she's not guilty, and is merely, indeed, a test... Ah, Emp'rer damn it all...
Succumbing to a moment of weakness, he swiftly doffs his trenchcoat--- still stained in some spots with mutant blood from his last engagement, but is still a large and thick garment nevertheless--- and with surprising gentleness, uses it as a blanket for their scared charge with it. [IF and IF she wakes while he does this, he growls at her ever so quietly, "Do. Not. Die. Of. Cold."]
Shaking his head at his lapse, he goes back to his vigilant patrolling. The walk... the wait... the watch... outer to inner then back again and around again he quietly walks the beat.
Taking one more glance at the surrounding panorama set alight by the last, miserly rays of crimson sun, Ethan started to scale down.
Unfortunately he had spotted absolutely nothing: the dunes were calm, the whole place looked uninhabited by fauna even. Or thankfully, depending on how one looked at it. Their ignorance of the past mysterious happenings annoyed him. Regardless, there will be time for contemplation later.
He picked a decent looking stone with a flat summit near their camp, providing the best field of vision, and sat on top of it. As hiver had concluded, someone or something could manage to pass unheeded and that is where he might be able to spot it before it reaches the camp.
Upon noticing an unexpected show of compassion on the feral's side Ethan realized that, of all of them, he can actually trust to this man.
The weak cold looking women did not wake when the large feral warrior placed the warm cloak around her, instead clinging to its blessed warmth. Time passed and the acolytes sleep seemed uninterupted. Nothing could be seen for miles.
It was time to change watches.
Eventually, though, by the walking of the shadows and the slow stride of the stars and moon across the sky--- and the growing heaviness of his own eyelids and limbs--- Urpna feels the passing of the hour. Hours? Minutes? Emperor alone knows...
With a yawn, Adti proceeds about his patrol of the camp for about the twelveth time, yet with his old hunter's--- and trooper's--- senses still keen as they ever were, despite the fatigue. By that selfsame sense, born on the march and honed on countless battlefields, he walks up to the base of the rocky promontory that Ethan has taken to be his watchtower...
Whuuuu-eeet-eeeet!
...purses his lips and whistles low enough to not wake the others, but loud enough to call his attention. [And when that doesn't do the trick, some tossed pebbles assuredly will(?)]
When Ethan turns to look upon this disturbance, Adti jabs a finger up at him, then swipes his hand down to the ground. He then inclines his head towards his folded hands in a pantomime of sleep and then jabs a finger again up at him.
Once that is done, he stalks over to where Uriel lies and shakes the elderly cogboy... the cogfather? the elderdritch? ... and whispers, "Padre. Y'watch's up."
Ethan slided off the lump of rock and gesticulated back with a silent question: "What?!".
Then, finally guessing what the guardsman meant, simply nodded, looked around for a cozy enough spot to crash at and lay down there, putting his backpack as a makeshift pillow under his head.
I assume I'm still fast asleep? Nicolo fell asleep quicky as soon as he sat down. He was more exhausted than he had looked.
The surprisingly young techpriest moves but doesn't stir for a few moments.
"You were eight point three seconds early. The Canticle Spiritus Invictus corresponds exactly to the watch cycle length.
Thank you though, I appreciate your thought in coming to wake me."
"OH FRAK! I saw one I SAW ONE!"
"OH you moron..now they have definably heard us!" cut clear and hard through the dimming night sky. The sound having came from a pack of men wearing sand coloured cloaks, crawling on there stomachs and inching closer to the protective rocks for the last hour or so.
Praise be Sol our ancestral home, in its light does mankind thrive.
Praise be Terra under Sol, mother of Mankind and its Emperor's throne.
Praise be Luna of Terra born, cradle of his Primarchs and Space Marines.
Praise be Mars the Primeval Forge, where the Emperor was revealed anew.
It was a simple children's catechism, to remind them of the importance of Holy Terra and Solsys. It was strange though, of the many formal and ornate tech prayers he knew that Uriel should recite so basic a portion of the Imperial Creed.
Those dregs had to disturb him just only as he relaxed and was ready to take a nap!
Ethan jumped to his feet and glanced around, trying to pick up the direction the shouting was coming from.
Behind him, Ash was in the relative safety of being at the rear and hugging the ground. So, he reasoned that the optimum way to protect her would be getting rid of the hostiles ASAP.
The man broke into a sprint to a protruding piece of rock across the camp and took cover behind it.
His usual merry enthusiasm gone in a flash, replaced with grim determination and will to smash these despicable foes.
"TO ARMS!" Adti roars, whirling about to face the foe. Beady black eyes squint into the distance, spotting the telltale flutter of cloth and glint of guns against the darkness of the night.
He briefly considers resorting to the silent hand-signs of the Guard so as not to betray their movements to the enemy, but decides against it since they're already here, practically within spitting distance. Spitting distance of slugs an' bolts, at any rate... "Padre, rearguard, with the girl! St'ne, flank-an'-frak! Prince, cut off they's south! Harmless... hold that rock!"
With adrenaline and hot blood, relief and fervour pounding in his veins, Urpna himself charges in, skidding to a stop behind one of the rocky outcrops oh-so-handily strewn about. Thinking to buy some time for their flankers... he calls out questions and taunts to the heretics in hiding, "Ah, relleh now? Nicolo paused behind the boulder, and began considering his options. HE could either charge them, or stay here, where, although their ability to shoot him was nearly negligable, so was his ability to hit them.
He glanced behind him, at the other members of his party, and sighed. Be great if everyone had micro-bead, he thought.
Uriel had decided fairly early on in this battle that shooting the enemy as anything but a last resort would be a bad idea. He was not a particularly good shot, his weapon was not calibrated for the engagement range, and it was dark and they were under cover. In short actual combat in these circumstances would be best considered as a very dangerous pastime in which his life was worth far more then he had the potential to gain.
As such moral support was a much better role to play. He spoke loudly, loud enough their opponents could hear him. With any luck they would try to shoot him and he, being completely behind a rock would be fine.
"Take heart my friends, for within the vastness of the firmament we are not forsaken among the uncountable stars.
Even now the light of Terra under Sol is upon us. For we serve the Lord of Mankind and upon us his favor rests. Stand firm in this test, and rejoice in it. For we are given the chance to prove our faith where others must profess only with words.
Let our deeds be like a fragrant offering, rising before the sight of the Emperor.
Oh Lord of Earth, if it be your will this night, have mercy on these poor children who oppose your servant.
In service of mankind it becomes necessary that some men must die.
If these are faithful and sacrifice required of them, then let their souls be gathered to your bosom.
If they serve heretics and evil men then let them be destroyed utterly and not the smallest fragment remain to continue service to the ruinous powers.
For the deaths of the righteous is cause for rejoicing for they are called home to your throne yet the blood of the wicked is a testament that their foul memory endures.
Oh Lord of Mankind in your name we endure, in your light we are sheltered, in your strength we are supported, in your eyes we are known."
If, as he suspected this was all some elaborate Inquisitorial test then hearing him proclaim the Emperor so loudly and in what, he hoped, was so pious a fashion that they might consider negotiation. It need not be that they all must die this night.
Then again, if they did stop shooting the situation would most likely only last long enough for his companions to get more favorable targeting solutions.
Either way he came off looking pious and he might come off as clever in battle.
Either way, it would be all according to plan.
Nicolo's face barely registered the grenade's explosions, reasoning that it was unlikely that he would be damaged by the blast, parked as he was behind cover. As soon as the cloud of smoke emerged, Nicolo almost cracked a smile.
What do you know? He thought. Perhaps the Emperor smiled on people like him. It was exactly the cover he needed.
After glancing briefly around, Nicolo charged forward, trusting that the smoke would cover his sprint. If only it could cover their shots if they noticed him. Years of training to dodge blindfolded should help with that, though.
Nicolo calmly levelled the ripper at the nearest enemy,doing his best to slow down from his run. He briefly sighted at the man's head, though he hardly expected to hit it, and fired.
Unlike the guardsman, Nicolo didn't scream a battlecry. If he had tried that sort of stunt on Malfi, then he would have quickly been a lump of recently animate flesh on the floor. On the other hand, this was a battlefield, not a ballroom.
Half-Move to BY25 (If I'm reading the map correctly) and fire, single shot at CA24
BS 33+ 10 RDS (BS43) [roll0]
Damage [roll1] I or
Tearing [roll2] I
PEN 7
If that damages the man, then he has a toughness test to make, at -5 per point of damage taken.
Seeing the shot glance the man, Nicolo smiled, pehaps with a little too much joy to be entirely healthy. Somewhere in the back of his head, a portion of his subconcious purred with contentment.
The hail of shots poured down onto the attackers before they had a chance to react.
The hail of bullets from Urpna tore a man to shreds, his blood splattering over the rock face and collapsing in a gorey heap. The Blind man dropped to the ground screaming as the extra shots whizzed past his head and tore at the leg and chest of another. Indeed they were not dead, but the blood dripping from there wounds spoke volumes.
As if that wasnt enough The Assasin's toxic weapon fired with an exotic shredding sound, tearing into the back of the only surviver of Urpna's attack. With his back oozing congeled blood, the barb sticking in deep it was a surprise he lived long enough for the poisen to reach his heart. Indeed he coughed up blood but ounce before falling face first on the rocks...clearly dead all to the sounds of curses and screams from the men now clearly caught in a pincer...and suffering its effects.
"Hush child, in so much as it is in our power we will protect you. There there now, calm yourself, it is nearly over.
Cry all you need to. Let it all out. Your heart is too full of fear and pain. Let it out, and be free of it. That's why we cry, because our hearts are too full. Tears are the hearts way of letting out what it can't hold onto any longer.
It okay now, the Emperor is with you, right here and right now. He is watching over you, and no force in the galaxy can harm you while he protects you."
Raise his voice so the others can here him at the distant fight Uriel called out, "Preserve at least one. What they know may be needful to us."
