As you leave your allies behind, Finnest and Acanthya assume their usual scouting role, ranging ahead of the smaller group.
Your ride to Winningham takes most of the day as you set a good pace and you increasing proximity to the large town is displayed in the number of people you pass on the road; merchants, farmers and travellers pass you; some nod, others ignore you, one group of farm workers stop and stare at you as you ride pass. There is nothing out of the ordinary, but you do detect something is not quite right in the air; a sense of despair, of people who are living under a tightening yolk. An increasing number of the people you pass glare at you suspiciously and with slight fear in their eyes as they see another group of heavily armed strangers heading towards a town which is practically ruled by criminals.

In your approach to Winningham’s Eastern Gate you see a large inn ahead, reading the sign you see it is called “The Duke’s Favour” and the sign is of a shadowy, diminutive figure carrying a long wicked looking knife!

Yurik

Yurik almost feels sorry when he goes to Finnest and reminds him to send Acanthya away. But the two can't be seen together anywhere near Winningham, and Finnest can travel on foot or on another's horse--Yurik is willing to walk--the last hour or so.

The halfling nods. Unseen and unheard words pass between warrior and spider, and the giant arachnid scurries off into the wilderness. She shall come in over the wall at night. Now, we must find a place to make our base of operations - and it must be different from those of our dwarven companions, Brother Yurik. Have you any ideas? I believe it was the Warleader who best knew this city. He's uncomfortable without Acanthya at his side, but he hides it well and takes the separation stoically.

As Acanthya scuttles off the four allies head their separate ways.
Yurik and Finnest
As you approach "The Duke's Favour" you dismount and a small boy runs out and takes the bridle of Yurik's horse. He grins and thrusts a wooden token into the half-orc's hand, I'll just take yer horse to the stables masters, when you want her back, just bring me that there token. The little figure then leads the horse off into the stables. As you look around you see that the inn is bustling and is doing a roaring trade judging from the coaches parked outside and the noises from in.
You push open the door and facing you is a long bar, with stools lining it, a number of tables are scattered around the rest of the floor and a set of stairs lead up to the first floor on the right. As you walk in, a tielfing srides up to you, Welcome, welcome sirs, and how may we help you here at The Duke's Favour? A table maybe, or perhaps some food?
Darrak and Chull
Parting from the halfling and half-orc you ride closer to the town and see the eastern gate looming above you. There is a subtle building of tension the closer you get to the town, people glare at you and a couple of armed figures look to step into your way but think better of challenging a pair of heavily armed dwarves. You reach the gate and as you are about to pass through it a pair of guards step out in front of you, blocking your path. Well now, I don't recognise you two strangers. What's your business here in Winningham?

Sure, we'll take a little food and a little drink. After he says it, he remembers that he's not supposed to act like a monk right now. And that after that we'll probably have more food and more drink.

We'd also like to know if you can suggest a place once we're ready to move into Winningham

At the same time, Yurik is trying to over hear conversations in case there are any discussions relevant to De Habre.

Of course sirs, please this way! The tiefling bows and escorts you to a table. The Duke's Favour is not only the first inn you meet on your way into Winningham from the capital, it is the best inn in the town, we are a few minutes ride from the town centre, why would you want to stay anywhere other than here? Now, our specialty is our roast venison but we do have some rather fine honey glazed pork. The tiefling beams at you, And what would sirs like to drink?
As you walk over to the table and listen to the tiefling sell the qualities of the inn, you scan the crowd. The majority of people there seem relaxed but just as you sit you spy a table at the back, near the stairs, where a number of figures are hunched round in deep discussion.

"Why nothing much, we've been on the road all day and are looking for a bit of food and drink, and maybe a place to spend the night that's a bit more comfortable than a bedroll in the open. The inn back there looked a bit too crowded for our tastes so we thought we'd see if we kind find somewhere else in town."

The halfling grins. The roast venison sounds excellent, says Finnest in his best sublimation of his elven accent. And what do you have in the way of drinks? The two guards eye you up and down. As if assessing you. Well, after a long day's travel, you could do much worse than stopping for a drink at The Chancer. Good food and ale there, eh? He nudges his companion. Oh definitely, great place! Head down towards the merchant district adn you can't miss it! Both guards step out of your way.
Finnest and Yurik
Ah, the venison an excellent choice sir and mead? Of course. He bustles away to get your food and drink, and both of you look around you.
The bar is long and runs the length of one wall. Serving staff weave between the tables and behind the bar fetching drinks and food. There are two roaring fires, one at either end of the room to drive away the winter chill. The table of more suspicious characters is at the end of the right hand side of the bar, just to the left of the stairs heading up, there are 3 or 4 tables between you and them, two of the tables are full of eating and drinking customers, the other, closest to the dodgy figures is empty.
Finnest's attempts to hear what is being said is thwarted by the noise in the bar, but he can read body language and for all the people round the table they are desparately trying to not be noticed- yet seem to be very angry

Nodding his thanks to the guards Darrak rides into the town. Darrak felt that there was something a bit off about the guards. For one thing they were almost certainly in the pay of De Habre. Still since they we're looking for De Habre's men anyway Darrak decides to head over to the Chancer and see what happens. So once they're out of sight of the guards he nudges Chull and says, "This seems like a good spot for an ambush. Be on your guard.."

Well, one of us ought to try to listen in to that table. You seem slightly more likely to bluff your way closer. But remember that we do not need the information to desperately. Mostly we want to know more about the places where De Habre's and his men live and work so we can sneak around them.

We must not be noticed.

Perhaps it would be enough to go up to the bar, near the end with that table if you can do it inconspicuously, in order to order us another round once you've knocked back your drink. Of course we have to wait for the food and drinks to arrive.

We don't want to wait too long unless they cease their conversation, but we can't approach too soon either. Still, if you drink quickly it may help us be less noteworthy, especially if you have to get a bit closer than the bar allows.

The halfling nods. I dislike lowlander drinks in general - mead is the most tolerable of the many that abound. But if the mission requires it, I shall drink the first with haste in order to request a second closer to the table, he affirms. Finnest and Yurik
Leaving the half-orc to his venison, Finnest weaves his way to the bar. The barman swiftly hands him another mead and as he drinks, turns his freakishly good hearing to the hushed yet animated conversation....
Well we've had enough of this. We did what you said and tried to fight, but it just made thing worse. Stephen had livestock killed, I've lost crops. Even the Jolin's have up an left, and that's something I though I'd never see, the first speaker you hear is clearly angry and frustrated. A second figure starts to speak,
That's right if Ben and Helen are prepared to leave their farm then times ARE bad. There are grumbles of agreement from the others round the table, all of whom have a haggard look and dress is warn, practical clothing.
The first speaker starts again,
What are you going to do about it? What is the Govenor going to do about it? More importantly, why won't he actually speak to anyone!
The only figure not to speak so far, dressed in fine clothes with an unhappy look on his face finally talks.
Please you must remain calm and quiet. ....
Calm and...
Please, he raises a hand imploringly and flicks a gaze around the room. De Habre has people everywhere, we must be below his radar or we will all be done for. Govenor Gray is trying to sort this believe me. We don't know who we can trust, and it is difficult. I rarely see him either. Please, a little more patience...
But how much more money will be taken from us?!You will be reimbursed, I promise you that, just continue to work with me... he tails off and the farmers grumble to themselves. There is a moments pause as all at the table gather their thoughts.
As he eats, Yurik studies the group but sees no evidence of the wolf tattoo.

Never. In fact, this cursed lowlander beverage may be the only reason you noticed my signals at all - normally, others cannot detect the signals I use. In any case, the riled up group in the corner... they are, in fact, our allies in this. They are the group of farmers who are resisting De Habre's control, and the fancifully dressed one is some manner of contact with the local authorities. A dark and dingy tavern, full of shadowy dealings and hidden nooks and crannies where many a dark deed has been planned. A few of the patrons flick a glance your way, but most are pre-occupied with their own business.
Although there are a tremendous amount of people drinking, talking plotting around you, through your reading of the ebb and flow of the busy bar, you notice that one figure seems to be controlling the orbit of a steady flow of people, comig and going, stopping by her table for a shorter or longer period of time, there appears to be no standard time. Sizing up the seated figure, you see that she is a genasi, her long legs stretched out infront of her. She has an air of authority about her.
You notice that three of the group who were shadowing you from the gate have slipped into The Chancer, two are lurking behind you, trying not to be noticed adn the third slips up to the genasi sitting at the table.

Recovering from his error, the halfling's speed along the rooftops and intuition allows him to follow the tiefling with no difficulty whatsoever, accurately predicting her movements as she heads towards the merchant quarter. Yurik stumbles out from the crowd he is using to mask his presence, standing exposed and awkard. However, he manages to dive for the shadows before the tiefling notices him. He perceptive eyes also manage to predict where she is going. The tiefling leaves the back street and heads onto a larger thoroughfare, weaving amongst street vendors and crowds towards a rather shabby looking inn. You hang back on the roof tops and in the shadows and read the sign hanging above the entrance, "The Chancer". She opens the door and strides inside.

Once he is sure he knows where the exits are, he finds a deserted alley and climbs up to the rooftops to discuss matters with the halfling.

Looking the man over again he then proceeds to kick him, "And that's for drinking my ale!"

Also if the man is obviously wearing heavy armor I don't do this as I will probably hurt my hand more than him.

One of the men leaps to his feet and shove the man back the way he came, Watch, where the hell you're walking fool! the twice beaten man staggers back towards Darrak, who kicks him hard And that's for drinking my ale!. The kick sends the man to the floor, who causes one of the three halflings making his way from the bar to the latrines to trip and chuck his drink into the face of the waitress who served you earlier. She spins and smacks the halfling in the face with her tray, causing him to stagger back into Darrak and Chull's table, spilling the warden's drink!
Hey! Don' hi' my friend.... one fo the halflings slurs and launches himself at the waitress!

On second thought, I think we can slip in unnoticed.

Yurik heads towards the inn, indicating for Finnest to follow him in a half minute later. He inwardly groans when he sees the dwarves now engaged in a bar brawl, and wonders why they think that's a good idea. It takes him a little while to realize that it's probably a good way to get in character, to look like a bunch of thieves liable to work for de Habre.

Yurik keeps his eyes away from either of his friends, careful not to make eye contact or otherwise act like he knows them. Glad that no pitchers are currently being thrown at him, or anything else that might make a normal farmer or merchant join in a brawl. Instead he sneaks around the edges and finds a table away from the brawl. He adopts a posture of annoyance and disgust. Gods, who needs a bar brawl? I just wanted a drink after a pitiful day of trading, he mutters.

In reality though, his mind and his senses are actives. He looks around for any hints that anyone here works for de Habre--especially any tattoos and he discreetly follows the tiefling woman with his eyes. He also has his ears open, but he doubts he can hear anything while his friends are making a ruckus.

As the fight spreads, the genasi moves to the edge of the tavern and watches, alert, it is almost as if she is judging the fight! You sneak to the door and as you jerk it open, the sight of your bared sword causes the figure in the door way to jump back, holding up his hands in defence. Wait, wait, wait, don’t hurt me; I want to talk to you! I saw you this afternoon in the The Duke’s Favour, you were watching me, you were very good but I’ve been spied on before! Following the Genasi is no mean trick and she nearly loses you once or twice but your height on the rooftops gives you an edge as you are able to spy her from a reasonable distance. From the way she moves you realise she is a consummate predator in this town, sublimely confident in her own reputation and skill. She is stopped by no one and indeed you notice several people get out of her way. As she exits from the last merchant she crosses the street to a market trader, speaks to him quickly and quietly and then heads back the way she came. You trail her and she makes her way back to the house and enters the door, you see nothing of Neen the tiefling.

You see no papers out, but there is a locked desk in front of the cupboard where she took the short swords from.
There is a gentle cough as the servant enters, My mistress asked if there was anything I could get to you as you wait? He stands patiently in the room waiting for your response, if you ask for nothing then he will wait attentively until Whinna returns.

She sits down at the desk and unlocks it, taking out a pen adn parchment she writes down the name and description of the man you are looking for. The man I want 'persuaded' is a councilman, called Jensen Puredean, he just is not getting the message. We've spoken, but he will not listen to words, an unpleasant smile crosses her features, maybe actions will be more to his taste. I want him out of this town and never to come back unless he can be more amenable to those who really control Winningham. He can be found most mornings conducting business at The Duke's Favour, an inn just outside the Eastern Gate.As she is talking, you hear the front door open and Neen the tiefling walks into the study. Nothing out there, thought there was, but probably just a bird or something!

Nodding again Darrak heads out and back to the Chaucer to get a room for the night. Then if it's not too late he'll head back to the Duke's favor and check it's layout for the confrontation with Jensen the next day.

The halfling nods. Apologies, Councilman, for my manners. I am still getting accustomed to Lowlander culture. Enter, please. Once the councilman has entered the room, Finnest closes the door. You spotted me, then, well done - but did you spot your more sinister observer, Councilman? And what sort of aid could my companion and I provide? We are but simple hunters come to the big city to stock up on supplies and catch the rumours of the day.

It seems that the tiefling and genasi may stay inside for a while, and it might be good to rendevouz with the dwarf. After looking around and making sure neither of the woman are coming out, and that no one else is paying attention, Yurik climbs down and hurries until he is walking a few yards in front of the dwarves. He doesn't start a conversation, immediately, but he does make sure the dwarves see who he is.

Nudging Chull with his elbow he proceeds to speak in a slightly louder than normal voice. "Aye aren't we the luckiest pair of dwarves eh. Less than a day in town and we've already got paying work lined up. And easy work too, This DeHabre fellow must be hard up for help if he can't deal with one skinny noble." Darrak laughs heartily, "Yes, this is far better than a war. One quick trip to the Duke's Favor tomorrow and we'll be set. A crowd starts to gather round the trio; some look a little worried, others quite excited by the prospect of a street brawl between two dwarves and large half-orc. One enterprising urchin starts to offer odds on who would win and begins to take bets as the three of you raise the stakes of your 'argument'.
The gathering attracts the attention of a couple of guards who look over, but seem reluctant to get involved. As your argument seems to come an amiable conclusion there is almost a sigh of disappointment from the crowd and the urchin vanishes into the back streets, leaving a string of angry bystanders out of pocket.
You begin to make your way through the streets and the guards breath a sigh of relief. Soon you find yourselves in the courtyard of The Duke's Favour, a bustling hubbub greets you and you notice that three merchants wagons have arrived and are pulled up next to the stable block.

Yurik hold up his hands. There's much to discuss here. We haven't reached a decision. I only got a brief report from Darrak and Chull, but they've been asked to scare the Councilman out of town in order to infiltrate de Habre's organization--so we can figure out how to undermine it. He takes a deep breath. And it seems that Jensen's continued presence can also help us undermine de Habre.

We certainly aren't going to hurt Jensen, but we can gain things by having him leave and other things by having him stay. Perhaps he can leave until the rest of our party return? Giving Darrak and Chull time to further infiltrate de Habre's organization. Then he can return once their deception is no longer necessary? Or, would your contacts be willing to accept you, Darrak and Chull, if you managed to convince him to stop working against de Habre? Again, just for a couple of days.

Or does someone else have another plan?

Agreeing to deal with the 'problem' of Jensen Puredean tomorrow, the councilman leaves quietly and unobtrusively, heading back to his own home to make arrangements to leave Winningham. The dwarves make their farewells to their allies and leave the inn, heading back into town, heading for The Chancer, while Yurik and Finnest bed down for the night.
You all have a restful night's sleep, although at one point Darrak and Chull were woken by someone singing loudly, and out of key.

Dawn breaks and begin your plan. Finnest and Yurik wake and are offered breakfast dowstairs in the main tavern room.
Shortly after they sit down Jensen walks in, ignoring them completely, and heads to the same table he was at yesterday; clearly his usual place of conducting buisiness. A member of staff brings him a cup of coffee and almost instantly he is confronted by a worried looking woman, who sits opposite him and begins to talk intently to him.
Darrak and Chull awake and are offered...beer...for breakfast, because cook didn't show up this morning. You make you way out of town and head to The Duke's Favour. You walk in to see Yurik and Finnest eating and your target in deep conversation with a woman at a table in the back of the inn.

*The night before*

Well, the best place to enquire for such things is an inn called The Chancer, I've seen many of his agents in there, especially the genasi Whinna and her twin brother Duggan. As for other locations, I don't know. I know he owns 2 or 3 town houses, bought through front men and women, making them respectable properties. He grimaces over the word respectable. Some of the guard are on his pay roll, but I'm not sure who. Some however, have remained loyal to the city. I would bet good money that a sargeant, Adamson by name, is honest...but it might be a trick. At least he seems outraged by what is happening here. I'm sorry I can't be more help.

There is a relatively large crowd of people heading into the town to conduct their daily business, but even through the hustle, you can detect the undercurrent of fear and discontent among the people. Passing through the gate and the two guards on duty, you soon find yourself near the route which took you towards The Chancer last night.
