You stand in a small room, within the same room stands two others. Nether of which you are familiar with. The door on the far side opens, a man wearing formal clothing stands in the doorway. His voice booms towards you all in a bored tone.
"She shall see you when the three of you are ready. Simply step through this door."

With that, the door swings shut from the other side. You carefully remember where you are.. Within the walls of Guvernul, about to meet a quite powerful woman.. Alantie, a nercomancer to be feared by all, for simply a job.

He nods to each of his companions before striding through the open door

Scrittle didn’t feel comfortable here. The walls closed in on her and the ceiling seemed too low close overhead. She had never been claustrophobic but could easily imagine right now how those who were felt. The oppression didn’t feel natural to her, and though she had no proof, was certain that some sort of magic was at work. Scops seemed to agree with her assessment; he paces restlessly between her shoulders, his head darting this way and that, keeping a constant vigil on the room.

She yearned to return to her camp in the woods, to fish in the nearby pond as Scops went hunting for his own meals, to spy curiously upon the human settlement that had recently established itself on the outskirts. Once this task was done perhaps she could return, spruce the place up a bit. Perhaps she would even feel perky enough to establish trade with the town. Time would tell, and the sooner the better.

A door opened through which stepped a stately man who seemed to lack the least bit of interest in his doings. "She shall see you when the three of you are ready. Simply step through this door."

Scops gave low-pitch hoot. The meaning would be lost on most everybody else, but the barely perceptible warbling formed clear words to Scrittle: “About damn time."

Without uttering a word of her own she stood from her bow-legged crouch as the others shuffled past the attendant and through the door. Perhaps it was her paranoia but Scrittle didn’t particularly like either of them. The human was frail and had a stressed, turbulent air about him, but there was no denying his force of personality. The other human she was completely unsure about. He looked like a warrior through and through, but she had trouble reading past his red eyes. In their tall wakes she proceeded, stealthily watching the attendant as she passed.

On the other side of the door, the well dressed man is gone. The room appears to be a personal study. Sitting behind the desk, is a female elf. Her ears, quite long even by elven standards, shoot out of her mess of brown hair. Wearing a leather corset, she appears very, very attractive. As you all enter, she speaks loudly across the room, as to make sure you all hear.

"You three most be my new helpers. I've been expecting you. Now I have an important mission in need of doing. A small town just within the Gresan border of Szent has been taken over by a new warlord. Normally Szent would step in and handle this problem but, they seem to be dragging their feet. I have a good friend within that city, who is likely to be targeted by this new warlord. Sadly, an extraction would have negative results, so instead I need you three to kill the new warlord. Understand? Good. Now be gone.

With that, she gets back to work. The formal man from earlier opens the door, this time from the other side. He motions for you all to follow. He leads to another door, which he opens. It leads to the outside, as sunlight streams in. You all step out onto the streets of Eastin, a large city in Szent. The town she spoke of, is about a days travel northwards.

Damien looks to his companions once they get outside. He looks noticeably frustrated at the events that have just transpired

"Walking into a battle unprepared would be tantamount to suicide. She gave us our mission but no information on what obsticals we will be facing. Its odd she gave us no information on our enemy, and suspicious. It leads me to believe she doesn't care if we succeed or fail. IN any case, we should spend some time trying to find out who we are fighting."

Ill ask around the churches.

You learn that the new warlord who was taken control is almost well known.. He is lawless and a detriment to society. He kills without care or thought. The churches bear little information on him. However, you do learn that in combat, he can summon weapons from thin air.

As Damien chose a dark corner to disguise himself Scrittle kept a stealthy eye on him. A quick, quiet series of hoots and whistles escaped her beak and Scops immediately departed from her shoulder, silently roosting atop a nearby building. She felt uneasy around this man. Perhaps if she kept an eye on him by proxy than her worries would be lessened.

In the meantime she would get to know her other companion. The human, or what appeared to be human, towered above her dressed for war. This one seemed somewhat easier to deal with, his personality less complicated, less likely to lead her on a conversational goose chase.

”So,” she began, trying to break the ice. ”What’s your take on this assignment?”

Drakon shrugs. "Just find and kill a warlord. I wish we got a name, or a face to work with though. As it is, we'd probably not know it's him if we walk past him. Heck, it might even be a her..."

"I'm no good with people though, so I can't help there. Wonder if we can annoy the butler for more information? I'd hesitate to disturb the Lady though..."

Scrittle strokes the underside of her beak momentarily in thought. Indeed the lady had appeared neck-deep in work, but Drakon’s suggestion about the butler might be doable. “Sounds like a plan. The butler might have a bit more to say.”

She turns around and turns the knob on the door, intent upon asking the butler within if he could give them some hints.

Scrittle glanced blankly at the butler for a moment as she composed her statement. “I’m sorry to bother you. Your master was somewhat vague about the nature of our mission. We don’t know the reputation of this warlord nor his capabilities. We don’t know the name of your master’s friend. We don’t even know the name of the town. What information do you have that could aid us?”

mrcarter11

A small chuckle is heard.

"When she is researching, she tends to be scatterbrained. Thee warlord she wishes you to kill is named Kraven Jipner. He's the son of a Szent noble, which is why Szent hasn't done something about his takeover yet. As for what he is capable of, well I can only say be careful. Her friend is named Mauve. She's a local woman, and a pacifist. Hence my Mistresses concern for her well being. The town is named Haven. That's most of what I personally know, a last thought, be very careful of Kraven's right man. His name is Bethos, and one of the few men I find reason to fear. Kraven himself, is quite dangerous due to what he can become.. A monstrous beast of sorts. Bethos meanwhile, well his power lies in blood, as it is his power. Another group of helpers won't be along for a while I fear, so your group is most useful. With that in my mind, take this. It will allow you to send me a telepathic message once a day. It could prove useful. Now if you excuse me, I must assist my Mistresses.

With that, he flicks a simple gray ring towards you, and then he departs.

Soilborn
2011-02-04, 01:46 PM
With a deft swipe of her hand Scrittle catches the ring, thanking the butler as he departed before doing the same. Too loose, too loose, perfect! The ring slipped comfortably over her middle finger she strolled back outside. Drakon had kept his vigil outside throughout Scrittle's conversation.

She passed on the information she had received to Drakon. "Now we just have to wait for the skinny one to return." Throughout the entire episode she had passively kept a feel on her input from Scops. The skinny human, she still didn't know his name, had so far done nothing suspicious as far as Scops was concerned. If anything he was aggravated about being sent on his mission. Scrittle could feel that her winged companion wasn't far off; its mark must be returning.

Such things always cause complications. He Practices his foreign accent several times before heading out of the dark alley where he was changing. He strolls confidently toward the church and enters as if it was his own home.

After some time of travel your group arrives in Haven. The town itself seems, scared. You see groups of men in the same military styled outfit positioned in several places. All of them seem rather unkind and quite angry. Now your must decide how to precede.

A quick scan of the town told Scrittle all she needed to know. It reeked of a principality held in the grip of tyranny. Few citizens seemed comfortable outside of their homes and passed as frightened shadows though the streets. The guards stood out like self-imposed sore thumbs, exuding an air of fascist authority. Scrittle felt that running afoul of one wasn’t so much a matter of her actions as their whim, and she kept a broad distance from any of them. She would have to tread lightly during her stay.

“Butler-man?” she spoke within her own head, focusing on the ring. Scrittle wasn’t entirely sure how the device worked and had neglected to ask her benefactor in the Mistress’s charge his name. “We’ve arrived in Haven. Do you have any tips on finding Mauve from here?”

As the three of you stand about doing nothing, guards begin to leer at you with morbid curiosity.. A few of them, with weapons proudly displayed walk over to you..

The guard seems intrigued by Scittle. With a glare he speaks again.
"This town is no longer part of Szent, so if you wish to enter, you must have the proper paperwork. If you don't have the papers, come with me. "

Scrittle stood her ground against the imposing guards, though she showed no outward signs of stubbornness. “I honestly don’t see how this affects us. I can’t speak for my companions but I’m not citizens of Szent, and I’m rather positive that they aren’t either. Are these so-called papers really necessary for a group of travelers to simply pass through while providing your town with commerce?”

As she spoke Scrittle gauged the guards, trying to get a feel for their intentions and potential threat. She was in this town for a reason, and if necessary she and her companions would have to put them down. But not here. She would rather be escorted out of the city before putting her knife to their throats.

The guard seems upset at the lack of respect that newcomers show. His orders next set of orders seem harsher though.

"Lay down your weapons now, all three of you, or we will attack."

All three of you can tell however that he is quite lax, as if he isn't even aware that you may do something besides what he ordered

Alright, you made the guards unhappy.. Stressful jobs and all. So, they are still flatfooted, as they aren't aware of a threat since they assume you're just gonna listen

Damien reaches into his pocket, and pulls out a small dull knife, little more than an eating utensil, and throws it to the ground in front of him:

"So hard to find good cutlery these days too. I am a mere missionary. I have no need for weapons."

Soilborn
2011-02-21, 02:48 PM
Without a word Scrittle tossed her hunting knife to the ground, making Damien's single contribution into an official pile. As opposed to the human’s her small blade was well made and taken care of, but a knowledgeable eye could easily discern from its construction that it was made for cutting ropes instead of throats. Her own claws were as effective at that as any knife, and she would murder a guard before letting one take the bow hidden beneath her cloak.

Her attention flitted about. She kept coming back to the guards, attempting to judge their reactions and armaments, but she also examined her surroundings using mostly her peripherals. The guards weren’t going escort them out of the city as she had hoped, and her adrenaline began pumping with what she felt was an inevitable conflict. A nearby building or any wall of some sort would be ideal. Her boots would allow her to walk easily up to higher ground from which she figured she could fire upon the guards with near impunity.

mrcarter11
2011-02-21, 04:51 PM
As the weapons hit the ground, the guards seem quite happy. Almost relaxed some. The leader of the guards flicks his hand at three others, who approach you all, with cuffs in hand.

The 3 of you are standing each with a guard behind you, who has yet to lock on the cuffs. The leading guard and one other both stand infront of you..

As damien speaks the words his body fades as another being forms where he was standing. A massive feline monster with claws and teeth the size of daggers phades into existence, red glowing patched hair flows like embers around its body. Her skinny companion’s dark chuckle caught Scrittle off-guard just as she guessed it did the guards. She had been somewhat untrusting of this Damien character, but over the past few days she had found her opinion founded on increasingly shaky ground and had allowed it to relax. Obviously there was more to him that met the eye.

She would have to consider the situation later. Damien’s transformation, body exchange, whatever he had done would no doubt instigate violence from the guards. All the better; there was no way she would allow these men to put her in cuffs anyway.

With the first inch of astonished muscle movement from the guards she bolted from the crowd to the nearest single-story wall. The transition from horizontal to vertical was nearly flawless; whoever happened to be watching her saw a small avian humanoid run towards and then literally up the wall. Reaching the top she flung herself over and dropped to one knee, eyeing the entire scene from just above the lip of the wall.

With a flop her backpack dropped to the rooftop beside her, unhitched from her thanks to the quick-release tabs she had installed on the shoulder straps. Her bow was immediately drawn to her left hand and two piercing arrows grasped in her right. Scops, who had somehow held on through her flight, took wing in response to a quiet whistle to survey the battleground.

Among the men waving their swords around stood two targets that drew Scrittle’s attention: the spear-bearing captain and the lightly-armored archer. She couldn’t seem to choose between them. The captain obviously held authority over the mob, and bringing him low would be a formidable hit against the patrol’s moral. The archer on the other hand was more of a threat to Scrittle herself. She felt confident in her ability to outrun nearly any of these monkeys, but this marksman with his magical bow and flying daggers would still pose a threat.

Scrittle settled upon the archer. She sprinted back down the wall and circumnavigated the battle to the best of her ability, positioning herself for a good shot while notching an arrow in her bow. She did her best to stay just within thirty feet of the archer and as far away from the rest as possible.

Scrittle slid the last few feet as she lined up her sights and cleared her mind. The sound of the battle grew muffled in her ears, replaced with an odd combination of zen-like clarity and the pulsing of her own blood. She swore that she could smell the arcane power wafting from the archer and focused the resultant hatred that boiling with her to sharpen her concentration into a diamond point. A deep breath held, her aim steadied, and the arrow was loosed.

A moment of worry from Scops high above was all that Scrittle needed to prepare herself for the attack. She hadn’t expected any sort of teleportation or whatever the guard had done to appear before her, but was more than ready for the strikes that followed.

The dagger slashed high in an arc that would have slit the throat of a larger creature, but passed well over her feathered head. The fist required a bit more finesse to avoid, coming straight down from above. She wormed herself just barely out of the iced gauntlet’s way and watched it pass a mere couple of inches from her beak. She got a prime view of her arrow on the underside of that arm, having pierced itself deep within the guard’s armpit which was now grouting torrents of blood. Scrittle could tell from that momentary glance that her single arrow had definitely severed a major artery, and likely damaged some internal organs as well. She on the other hand remained so far untouched.

Silly spellcaster. Be they fists of ice or arrows of light, his arcane tricks were no match for her pure skill. Not only had he failed in his attempts to strike her but Scrittle was now in an opportune position to strike back. The twisting of his body as he attacked with both arms had left his head exposed with only his glare as a defense. With lightning speed her bow was raised, an arrow aimed point-blank at the pupil of that eye. The world stood still for a quarter second as the arrow was loosed.

Not waiting to see the result of her assault Scrittle ducked and rolled immediately backwards away from the threat, recovering with a quick skip and pulling two more arrows from the quiver on her right leg as she took stock of the situation.

Scrittle's arrow seems as if it shall strike true, but then mere inches from her opponents neck, a suit of fullplate appears on her opponent and blocks the arrow, and then disappears. As she tumbles out and takes stock of the situation around her, she sees her opponent has found a new target.

Drakoh's attack seems as if has left the guard near his end. However, he still stands for now, and while he stands, he attacks. His spear once again comes for you, as if hunting your head. The guard swings one last time putting his best attack forward. At that moment Drakoh's realizes he has another enemy now. His new enemy, grew bored with the archer it seemed. He summons forth a bolt of lightning, which he quickly launches it as well.

Sorry for the... OP powers and manuevers. As far as I can see, Drakoh will soon die without it, so...

Thanks to his training, he manages to dodge the spear by instinct, even when he was not prepared for it. It helps that it wasn't very well aimed. However, the lightning bolt was too accurate for him to dodge.

Feeling threatened, he manifests something that causes his form to waver and change. A burning creature with blood red skin stands in his place. It spends a moment focusing and a moment later, it slashes the spearman twice with his glowing sword, flames trailing behind it.

Scrittle hadn’t seen her arrow blocked but the guard still stood, now encased in a suit of full-plate. Arcane trickery; the arrow’s flight was true and his neck fully exposed. Her blood boiled over the robbed kill, and came to a steam with the disdain with which he seemed to dismiss her in favor of her traveling companions. Another arrow was nocked and pulled almost on instinct, but just then her senses cleared enough to take full stock of her surroundings.

Her companions fared much worse than she. The fiendish tiger that had taken Damien’s place had scored a kill, but was now in a dire state. A summoned creature she concluded, nothing to be worried about. Drakoh was another story. He bled profusely as his form wavered and morphed. The crimson creature that resulted assailed the ailing spearman mercilessly with a flaming sword. In a bolt of movement the tiger flashed passed her, leaving the new form of Drakoh alone against the remaining swordsmen.

Now it seemed all the guards were using magic. A wry grin spread across Scrittle’s avian face as she carefully strafed the frenzy. Hopefully Drakoh would last long enough for Damien to pull himself back together. Another guard was attacking him with a bolt of lightning, another arcanist in need of smiting. Her aim shifted to her new target and after a moment of concentration her shot was fired.

((Not trying to ignore your character’s shout Machina, but Scrittle’s in a bit of a blood frenzy at the moment))

Damien, still controlling the virtually tiger was really hoping the one of the archers would have tried to finish him offso he could return. Damien is stuck until the creature dies. Reentering combat would only put damienwithin arms reach of the casters. He had to keep his distance.

With a thought he gave the tiger its orders. It had no fear since its death would only return it unharmed to its home plane. It raised its fierce claw slowly to its own throat, before tearing down with a shower of blood. The creature dropped quickly and slowly faded leaving damien to fade into existence atop the pool of glowing blood.

Damien surveys the scene, allowing the magical energy to well up inside of him. He raises his casting arm preparing to bring his powers to bare on the guards.

The guards were catching on to her elusiveness and were coming after her. Fortunately, though their attacks were concentrated their efforts weren’t nearly enough for a single hit to land true. The spiked chain that emerged from nowhere slammed harmlessly into the ground not far from her feet, requiring hardly the least bit of effort to dodge on her part. The longswords flew about from her flank, yet even with their tactical advantage the guards’ attempts were for naught. With fluid grace she slipped herself between their blows and attempted to roll away from the middle of their little group.

A hop and a skip from the tumble and her second held arrow found itself notched in her bow as she scampered a short distance away, moving backward to keep an eye on her foes. Their defenses were unusually formidable, more than she had expected. Still, as long as she could keep from being struck she was sure that they would eventually fall to her arrows.

The bow was brought up to her eye and the world came to a crawl for a heartbeat as she lined up her sights. The lackeys may score a wound, but the arcanist with her arrow in his side was clearly the greatest threat. His attacks held training and malice, and Scrittle could sense the magic that gleamed from them. Her focus shifted to him, searching for a weak spot, before firing another arrow.

Tumbling past the arcanist and moving 30ft away. Unless the other soldiers have a way of moving more than 30 feet I’ll be just outside of melee range. Attacking arcanist with longbow.

Were these guards seriously offering a cease to combat? Now their potential captors were trying to merely escort them out of the city as opposed to throw them into a jail cell even though Scrittle and her party had been the first to draw blood. It smelled of desperation, especially considering the gusto with which they had previously jumped into combat. Still, the terms of their exile were not quite acceptable.

“An escort out would be dandy, but I’m sure as hell not leaving you with...” Her retort was cut short as a grey blob appeared in the midst of the guards, quickly taking a large lupine appearance. She had seen Damien dart behind a nearby wall moments before; obviously the human wasn’t quite ready to lay down his arms.

Words spilled from her mouth in a low mumble. “Son of a Catoblepas!! Fasta i' goth!” The urgency of the situation demanded that she cut her string of curses short in favor of her incantation. With a few simple hand motions and a simple phrase, weeds shot up from the pavement beneath the guards’ feet, winding around and holding fast anything they come into contact with.

Not waiting to see the outcome of her spell she ducks behind the wall where she finds Damian finishing an incantation of his own. “We have a mission to complete here, and a higher body count isn’t exactly part of it.” Her statement wasn’t a reprimand but a simple clarification of a fact; these guards made her blood boil, and the urge to strike them down flowed through her veins despite the logic behind her arguement. Even now she gripped two more arrows in preparation for more aggression. Still, Damien had his disguises and she had her stealth, so wandering the city incognito was no problem for them, but what of Drakoh? How would he be able to contribute?

With the morning light Scrittle awoke, rubbing the gunk from her dark eyes. From her vantage point low in the solitary tree she could see for a good mile around, not to mention her two companions who still snoozed below. The city loomed not too far in the distance, a toll both of some sort controlling entrance. Her gaze scanned the rest of the metropolis searching for an alternate entrance. A few quiet hoots and Scops took flight, seeking a better angle.

After he has settled himself he goes with his compainions to survey the toll booth.

"Well yesterday they were arresting us for approaching the city, now they sell entry to anyone. Whoever is in charge of this operation is making no sense to me. Shall we go try to get in? Did any guards survive the attack last night to be able to identify us? I think were better off sneaking in under the cover of darkness."

Soilborn

Scrittle nods as Damien makes his points. "Waiting until night sounds like a good idea, but really limits what we could discover. Also the guards are not likely to bother us during the day when we're just members of a crowd, but if we stalk the streets alone at night they can easily single us out. I think you two should disguise yourself and we all go in now." She was sure not to mention disguising herself; no amount of makeup could cover up short body of feathers and a beak.

Scrittle gathered her things hanging from the low branch and hopped down from the tree as Damien made his points. “Remaining unseen is my specialty, I don’t think it’ll be too much of a problem.” She kneeled down for a moment to gather the green air bramble she had planted in the ground the night before, quickly counting the berries along its length. 14 ripe, with 8 more still growing. She carefully uprooted the vine and wrapped it loosely around her neck.

“I’ll keep pace with you two to the best of my ability. In the off-chance the need arises for me to get sidetracked I’ll leave Scops in your care. Please, keep your invisibility spell for now. It may come in use later.”

As Damien put the finishing touches on Drakoh’s disguise Scrittle was already scanning the town. Scops had long ago been sent to survey the wall and find an ideal point to walk over and was now just returning from his quest. His report came in a flurry of squeaks, chirps and hoots. With her companions already making their way Scrittle dismissed Scops to keep an eye out from above. A few incantations later her gear, clothes, and even feathers and beak shifted hues, making her appear to blend right into the grasslands. She set of stalking quietly through the grass and avoiding the sparse guard patrols by the widest of margins.

Reaching the stone wall she took a quick glance around her to ensure that she wasn’t being watched, then upwards to judge the wall’s height. With a short running jump her feet met the wall and up she ran as though on level ground. Her eyes kept glued to Scops’s position in the sky high above, acting as an inconspicuous visual guide to any guards that may occupy the ramparts.

With a few final feet she reached the top. Slowly and carefully she looked over the edge as though staring over the edge of a great precipice before hoping atop the wall. Her journey was half-over; she still had to manage the descent. With a careful glanced over the wall’s edge, looking for a handy rooftop that intersects the wall or a quiet alley that she could inconspicuously emerge into the crowd from.

Judging from the movements and visible conversations of her companions Scrittle surmised that they were getting straight to the point. Their travels eventually brought them to a modestly-sized building deep within the city. Her skills at reading lips weren’t the best, and she could only make out snippets of their conversation, but from what she could gather the two were ready to raise a ruckus. Damien began to step away into the shadows and Drakoh’s hand went to his belt.

She wasn’t willing to blow her cover just yet. So far Scrittle had done an amazing job of navigating the city, unheard and unseen by a single soul. Yet she had some input to give. Using a piece of charcoal and a small strip of parchment she scribbled out a quick message: “How are we even sure he’s in there?”

With a tiny length of linen she tied the note hastily to the leg of Scops and sent him off. The small owl flew as inconspicuously as possible down into the square, landing with false clumsiness at Drakoh’s feet.
