I've been thinking on the whole scene that's going on right now, and I think that there is a strong possibility that Tarquins troops will crash the rescue.
Think about it, it would be an excellent dramatic way for Tarquin to bring suspicion down on Elan, making Ian and company not trust him {though the Oots would not buy it.}
In addition, we have already spent several strips forshadowing the arena battles, and it would be pointless to establish a enmity between the bounty hunters and Roy, if they were just going to get of jail free. Besides, you can't have a fantasy epic without at leasty one gladiator battle.

Thoughts, opinions.

I'm thinking all of the Order currently in the prison are somehow going to end up in the arena because of Tarquin sneakiness. Then Durkon, who will be watching with Malack will see them, and I have no idea where V will be. Maybe we're just about to get a strip of Durkon wondering where they are.

:vaarsuvius: Their overactive libidos are rarely in use for this long a period...
:durkon: <Incomprehensible dwarvish accent punctuated by swearing>

I have difficulty seeing Tarquin throwing his son into the Arena.

He's either gonna
A.) be hidden by Haley so Tarquin doesn't know, and then rush out of hiding in the arena
B.) be made to watch by Tarquin as a loving gesture

Eh, he might justify it as "training to overcome Xykon and eventually me. Also, it makes for an angst-y story." Plus, he knows that, from a dramatic viewpoint, he won't die. And he could easily resurrect him if anything.

I think seeing Tarquin burst in with 20 or so of his lackeys is too cliche even for this comic...never mind.

Puh-lease you think Tarquin would burst in with lackeys. No he would probably just find a way gas the chamber so everyone falls unconcious John Irenicus style considering how genre savvy he is.

Why wouldn't he just shoot him if he's so genre savvy?

Because then he'd probably end up toppled by some peasant smuck of no consequence rather than his own son, making him a legend, that's why.

Sure, Tarquin would be satisfied with merely dying having lived like a king crushing all opposition to his rule, but remember that he is playing for bigger stakes.

I don't think Tarquin will show up in the prison anytime soon.

Haley sent two guards to the coutshouse. Due to bureaucratic delays news of this may take time to reach him.

He does not know about Elans connection to the gladiatior he tried to recruit in #753 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0753.html), and missed Belkar's hints about a twenty years younger person.

He intrupted Elan in midsentence, when Elan was about to tell him about Haley's dad in #759 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0759.html), and dismissed Elans hint about a prisoner of Tyrinaria as unimportant. Their conversation dithered to other themes then, with the duel and all.

He may suspect Durkon to be a secret ally of Elan, but both Durkon and V haven't left the scene, so Elans and Haleys disapearance may be more a case of "crying at his girlfriend shoulders" than drastic measures.

Haley never revealed her last name.

Short point: Until he has connected all the dots, Haley and co will have resolved the prison business one way or the other.

Oh, I forgot. Even when he appears to think something that's wrong, Tarquin is omniscient.

Or maybe he doesn't care. Why would he crash the party in the first place? Does he even know they're in the prison right now?

Wasn't there a thread a while ago about Malack calling Haley Miss Starshine?

Woopsie. You are right, in #764 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0764.html). Must have been the passage papers in #726 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0726.html), where this particular information got through.

And the starshine name must have come up pretty often, considered Ian tried to escape two dozen times. Someone, either Tarquin or Malack, must have decided he was worth the trouble.

I stand corrected: Tarquin very likely knows of of this connection. So is he waiting before the prison or will he crash the party? Toss a coin, either way it's goning to be so much fun for him.
