View Full Version : Cards As Weapons

There are quite a number of youtube videos of people attacking helpless fruit with regular playing cards.

So inspiration struck. How would you stat up a playing card as a weapon? What range would this have? What feats would you allow to be used with playing cards as weapons? Can an effective build be made of this?

Videos below so that you may get an idea of how this works.

Shuriken stats, re-flavored.

At least, that's what I'd do.

Are we talking something like Gambit from X-Men with exploding cards? Just Cards which act as Shurikens? Or a class which utilises the playing card aspect to create a Gambler kind of class?

The former two could probably be reflavoured from existing classes quite easily. The latter? That'd be pretty interesting. I doubt it'd be terribly optimised, but it'd be interesting to see. Though the majority of the game was utterly terrible. FFX-2's Lady Luck dress sphere comes to mind as something to consider when building it.

Deck of Many Things?

Throwing weapons, 1 slashing damage, 20/x2 crit, +5 bonus to Sleight of hand to conceal, 10 foot range increment (you're not throwing them much further with any force), negligible weight.

That's how I'd rule.

As for price, let's say 1 sp for 54.

Simple, elegant, I approve.

In addition to being exotic though, even a monk/ninja would need a feat to be proficient imo.

I wonder what attacking with a Deck of Many Things would entail?

Doom for the wielder. You still have to 'draw' a card to throw it. ;p

Not if you throw the entire deck at once.

But yes, I'd do the shuriken as well. Maybe throw in some of the whip stuff, cause you know.. you can hurt someone in full plat armor with a shurikin, but not with a whip.

Depends on what game you are playing, of course. For Mutants & Masterminds, you just have to take enough ranks in Throwing Mastery, and you can use anything as a deadly thrown weapon (take enough, and you can rival tanks in sheer destructive power).

It could be the basis of a PrC. After all, there's a divine one (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040502a) built around attacking with a Sphere of Annihilation, so an arcane one built around attacking with the Deck wouldn't be too farfetched - they are both minor artifacts.

While I was at work today I had an additional thought to all this.

Would it be possible for a bard to have Perform (Card Tricks) and say that his attack is part of a card trick so that it goes along with Bardic Music?

I have seen alot of third party content that uses Shuriken stats for thrown cards.
