Ok so im looking at running some L5R agan, i played and ran a lot of it back when it was in first edition and i still have 99% of the first ed book (lost way of the Crane some where a long the way:smallfurious:).

What i am asking of the playground is what major changes have occured up to the 4e.

If you never played first but played 3rd and 4th thats fine just give me general crunch impresions.

With regards to fluff have they moved the story a long and where is it at now?

Any comment would be much appreciated.

Where the L5R story is now, I couldn't say. I kind of gave up on that after the Day of Thunder, but you can find the more current fictions here (http://www.l5r.com/category/story/), and there's an archive maintained by a friend of mine here (http://lowfierce.com/kazenoshiro/).

Crunch wise, 4th edition is a long way from 1st. The dice mechanic is the same roll and keep one, but other than that, things are very different. You can get a sense of where the writers were coming as well as when the new mechanics are like from by reading theL5R 4th edition design diaries (http://www.enworld.org/forum/blogs/l5r-design-diaries/2217-designer-diary-1-anatomy-new-edition.html) at EnWorld.

Not sure how good they are though.

This is just secondhand, but I've heard that they've finally ditched the CCG-based metaplot. I have also heard very, very positive things about 4th Edition.

Got the 4e book right here. Never played any prior versions (new to the system, so can't compare, playing with friends who have much more history with it).

The timeline in the book goes up through the 12th century, with a large number of events listed in there, so it seems to be the main focus of recent in game events. Currently my group's playing a bunch of modules near the start of the twelfth century, leading up to the Clan War and second day of thunder.

Mechanics-wise, as a newbie I really can't compare, occasional comments of "oh yeah, that disadvantage isn't near as bad as it used to be."
