View Full Version : Idea for "Death"

One idea I had for a "Death" type character was going disciple of dispater, somehow getting 6th level spells and hitting epic for Permanent Emanation: Anti-Magic Field. He would obviously use a scythe and wear a badass cloak type thing. Permanent AMF is pretty much the scariest thing I could think of to give Death that horrifying feel. The only problem is getting both 6th level spells and the 8th level disciple ability. I would go 12 levels sorcerer (I like sorcerers better than wizards) that gets you 6 bab, and 6th level spells. The problem is picking feats and spells to flesh this out. Probably focusing on no save debuffs in the same vein of AMF.

As well as getting advice for this, what is your take on Death?
How would you personify Death in your games, both in style and substance?

Give him a rat familiar and a horse named Binky. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_(Discworld)) :smalltongue:

Considering that you'll be in the center of a permanent antimagic field, I don't think it matters how many spells you get. Probably better to go with somebody who can actually fight.

As for how I usually portray Death (as an NPC) in my games, I usually go with this

Nerull

Or this if I'm feeling nice about it

For Permanent Emanation:

Permanent Emanation [Epic]
Prerequisites

Spellcraft 25 ranks, ability to cast the spell to be made permanent.
Benefit

Designate any one of your spells whose area is an emanation centered on you. This spell’s effect is permanent (though you can dismiss or restart it as a free action). Effects that would normally dispel this spell instead suppress it for 2d4 rounds.
Special

You can gain this feat multiple times. Each time, select a different spell to become permanent.

Since you can dismiss it as a free action, I'd say working on some spells for additional shenanigans would be reasonable.

Also, I've never built a "gish" type before. I don't know all the tricks and prestige classes to get bab and spells and all that stuff.
I thought this was a neat take on Death, and a cool general idea.
I would like to work on it more just for those reasons. Stuff that fits a Death theme would be even better.

As far as a "fighting character with a permanent AMF", my gut instinct says Barbarian, but really any Extraordinary abilities would be awesome. Plus, a sorcerer barbarian would be HILARIOUS.

ROTTEN POSERS THE LOT OF THEM.

You make me happy.

However, I feel it necessary to offer the obligatory Abjurant Champion. Full BAB and a d10 HD will help your gish-ness, as well as advance casting all the way. Plus its my new favorite PrC.

^ Cannot love that enough. Seriously. Use Terry Pratchett's concept for Death; people with terminal illnesses have written him letters saying that they hope he's right about Death. In his words, "I tend to stare at the wall for a long time when I get those."

How about packing him Cheater of Mystra? AMF? No problem.

How would you fit both Abjurant Champion and 8 levels of Disciple of Dispater in this build?

What other gish classes would be good for this?

Yeah, I don't really like cheater of mystra. If I wanted to do that, I would just blatantly break the rules and not bother with having a class feature do it for me (rule 0). I would much rather find an inventive way that is rules-sound.
Permanent Emanation is a lot easier to pass off anyways, and is specifically what I wanted to work with in this concept.

Could always use Castlevania's Death. This has the bonus of A) Have him not being the Biggest Bad. He's serving Dracula. B) He can FUUUSSIIOOOON with Dracula to make Draculeath, who's a real nasty to fight.

Just don't use the one from the most recent 'Castlevania' (and yes, those are airquotes to denote I don't accept it as part of the actual Castlevania series) game. He looked dumb.
