Hi there, swarms of friendly banter people.

A friend of mine is currently trying to secure himself an interview for a scholarship for his first choice university (BPP (http://www.bpp.com/) for those interested). For some odd reason (which I really cannot understand), they decided that the best way to decide who gets the interview is to have a vote on it.

If any of you could spare a few minutes to vote for him Id really appreciate it (and Im sure he would ask well).

Thanks a bunch.

Hope he gets in! I wonder why they're having a vote though. What if the person trying to get in his a popular webcomic or something?

That vote thing is a bit weird... still, I suppose it is a democratic way of doing things. It just, unfortunately, seems more like a high-stakes popularity contest.

Voted.

Seems a bit weird, as said. But hey, at least they had an e-mail verification system in place, which makes the whole thing a bit less of a eyebrow raiser.
Still weird, though. Still, whatever it takes, right?

I suppose the vote thing makes sense if you look at it like this: business people thrive on good reputations. The better and more widely you're known the better your business will do, which is why marketing is valuable. So I suppose what the vote is determining is, how well can you make yourself noticed and how good is your reputation.

Though it should be noted that all I know of this school is looking at their website and the wikipedia page, but it seems to be a business school so I think the idea is to gague your skill at gaining a good reputation.

Oh, I'd call it more of a networking-skill contest than a popularity contest. :smalltongue:
"Who can get the most people to vote for him?" isn't a bad criterion for law school scholarships. It's a good proxy for persuasiveness and likability, both important traits for lawyers. Deciding who gets a scholarship via online vote is certainly untraditional, fairly arbitrary, and vulnerable to abuse (like, say, having a third party ask random strangers on the Internet to vote for a contestant), but I can see why someone would think it was a good idea.

Anyway, I voted for him.

Voted, but with my adress that I use to collect spambots. The privacy policy says exactly nothing, other than that they can do anything they want with every piece of data they collect.

I wonder what verified e-mail adresses of would-be-layers cost today?

Thanks to all of you.

Im not entirely sure about how or why the voting works, but they did it last year as well and it worked ok then.

The system seems to be, in my opinion, fairly stupid. But that's no slight against your friend, so I voted anyway :)

More thanks to all you lovely people. He's third at the moment, needs to be in the top 5 in 8 hours time, so we're optimistic.

I remember the problems I had getting to uni here in England (am there now - Bradford FTW).

Thanks to all of you - he ended up in the top 5 so gets the interview he wanted. Odd system, but it worked in his favour.
