So, a friend of mine who knows nothing of D&D brought up this picture. Now, I recognize the style typical of D&D illustrations, but I'm unfamiliar with the beast itself. Does anyone know what this thing is/where it can be found? It's driving me nuts.

It starts with a D, and I want to say "Dreloch" or something like that. It's a half-drow/half-demon. Because, you know, elves are just too friggin' special to get the half-fiend template. Blame Forgotten Realms.

Yeah, specifically they're half-drow half-glabrezu, hence the four arms. As kind've a 'graduation' ritual for gifted priestesses, a glabrezu is summoned, the demon and priestess call in the stork, and if the priestess is blessed, she gets a draegloth.

They're given a monster class in Champions of Ruin, as well as being statted up in Monsters of Faerun, and Drow of the Underdark (IIRC).

I dunno, the rast seems strong on paper, with multiple natural attacks and a paralysing gaze attack, though it does have a fairly high cr for its HD. I suppose a group of 3-4 rasts might be able to surprise a 8-9th lv party. Roll enough DC13 fort saves and some should punch through eventually. :smalltongue:

Back in my early days of DMing, when I had no reserve, a player of mine once thought it a good idea to check under his bed in an inn.

Of course my brain then thought it logical that half a dozen vampiric creatures from the plane of elemental fire were lurking in The Dirty Flagon's bed chambers...

They make for a very fun encounter though, in the same way Stirges do.

Serious deja vu, here... Looks like this image has been misidentified as a wendigo several times.

I realize I am responding to way back at the beginning of the thread, but I think this image has been misused often not by mistake but by deliberate re-purposing. Although it bears little resemblance to a traditional folklore Wendigo (the DnD monster is also not very close, but in a different way) the image of the demon-drow does look a lot like common pop-culture / horror-movie Wendigo renditions, so I think what happens is someone needs a picture of a Wendigo for their D20 modern / call of cthulhu / homebrew DnD campaign and they grab this one cause it fits pretty good.

The rast has got to be the least used monster in the MM1. I swear, I don't think that I've ever seen one in play. That thing just doesn't fit in anywhere. Poor guy, I'm using him in my next game, no matter how inappropriate.

Funny enough, Pathfinder like the rast enough to put it in Bestiary 2. They've reskinned them as these kind of giant flying tick things, but still.

Your third on the set before is none other than Malar, Faerunian Dark God of Savagery and Beasts! The last two on the new set are Faerunian, too. The middle is an... Othydra? I know the 3 books it's in. I'm almost certain it's in Magic of Incarnum, but it might be in Complete Psionic, or failing that, Expanded Psionics handbook. It's an ooze. Not well liked, but it's somewhere in there.

Wait wait wait, it's a CR 28 creature, that summons belches up 1d4 demons of CR 10 or less? And if the demons seem easier prey than the opponent, it might eat them instead?
