Hey folks.

This idea has been floating around my head these last few days: Has anyone seen/created a point buy system for class features in DnD 3.5? That way one could create any class they wanted. Think Generic Classes from Unearthed Arcana, but going all the way to determine HD, skills, saves etc.

Cheers,

R.P.

I have, in fact, created a point-buy system for the 3.X system, though I don't know how compatible it'd be with D&D. I've spent quite a long time refining feats, recrafting the economy, completely redefining magic, etc. The game is no longer D&D, and as it's based on my own homebrew setting, it is its own game.

I'm sure there are other systems out there, however, like "Buy The Numbers" though, to be honest, I don't know how old this is (not that old, I think). It's way too restrictive to my taste, but it's much, much more freeform than normal classes.

Hope this helps.

There's always "Buy the Numbers" - (Google it for download pages and reviews, or there's a hardcopy version).
It uses XP as the method for purchasing everything, from BAB and saves to spells known and wildshape.
You get a starting XP pool to create your character, but from there it's classless and levelless.

Unfortunately, the layout of the book isn't good. Most of the text is taken up with the theroy, when all we really want is the juicy numbers.

BESM d20 did this as well. It also has the advantage of not being restricted to purely fantasy settings.

Dreamscarred Press has Complete Control (http://dreamscarredpress.com/dragonfly/Store/product/pid=47.html), I've used it on occassion and it works very well since it takes into account types of class features as well as providing for the core abilities and those made by them, most of which can be found on their SRD (http://dsp-d20-srd.wikidot.com/home).

You might also want to consider the UA Generic Classes variant.

Or, if you are prepared to use a different system, GURPS is based around point-buy for everything. It also has the advantage of being universal, meaning you are not restricted to fantasy.
