View Full Version : King of the Mountain - the Orcjaw II

Leewei
2011-02-14, 08:22 PM
Crossing the bitterly cold water, you pass an arc of white stalagmites rising from the water at fairly even intervals, eerily reminiscent of an orc's lower jaw. After several minutes, you find yourself at the top of a 10' sheer drop with water trickling down. You can stand or sit uncomfortably on the ledge over the seep. Below, a shallow stream runs down an enormously tall, narrow subterranean gorge. In the distance, occasional drips and splashes echo from what must be a large body of water.

Climb DC15 (natural wall, slippery, corner) to go up or down, or else simply drop for 1d6 damage (Jump or Tumble DC15 will negate this).

Jag gets ready to piggyback his friends down the gorge.

"Aight den boys, no playin' roun' dis time. Who needs a lift?"

Learning from the last time, Balthazar grumbles:
"Let's get this over with then."

The hit to his dignity is less than the hit to his short shin-bones, and grumpily accepts the piggyback.

After Jag helps his companions down the seepfall, the dwarves tromp to the edge of a large, subterranean lake. Some blind cave fish are visible in the water, including some larger pike-sized varieties. As scarce as fish have become, this might be important.

All PCs roll Spot and Survival (WIS is untrained).

Balthazar appears suddenly unsettled.
"Lads, there's something out there. Looks like cinders or embers glowing orange; and the rooves of some sort of structures. Doesn't look dwarven to me. The glow's probably a torch in smoke. Whatever it is, be careful."

"That's burning coke," explains Dal, also betraying a hint of unease, Not a foundry, we'd hear the hammering, so it's some sort of kiln or oven. But aye, we'll have to be careful. If there's something here with that sort of infrastructure and is not dwarven, we must hope it does not notice us."

Dakost contemplates the implications of nondwarven life in the depths: "Why, we certainly must take care, but I wonder - If there is other life down here, life which has not attacked our settlement yet, wouldn't it be righteous to try and extend our hand in friendship? After all, those are potential allies... And that may be their fish supply..."

"I'm inclined to agree on principal," says Balthazar, "But if things turn nasty, they'd probably over-run us easily. We'd best go carefully - after all, if we don't go meet them, they might find out about us and not be so friendly. We've nothing to lose, but that's no call to throw caution to the wind"

"We have nearly a hundred dwarves to lose. Not to mention our greater goal to return to our native halls and evict the goblins," says Dal, "And we still have found no trace of the Waterfinders. Let's move on."

All:Given the largely stone composition of the shoreline, I'll allow Stonecunning to apply to Search checks. Rather than making you roll, it'll become clear to all after a bit that some chains have obviously been dragged into the water to the West near the wall. Swimming this direction several hundred feet leads to a low jet mine with some picked-clean bone fragments and further signs of chains dragged into the mine.

A Heal (untrained Wisdom) check might reveal more regarding the bones.

It seems that you've found the fate of the Waterfinders. Four recently reanimated skeletons flank the North doors. The bloodied bones are recognizably dwarven. They are wearing chain shirts and wielding dwarven waraxes. The figures face the double doors to the North and do not respond to your presence ...for now.

"Look, why don't we just carry on to the South," says Balthazar, "If we find that there's something worthwhile down here, we can come back with reinforcements. If we find nothing of interest, we can avoid the risk altogether."

He scratches his beard, embarrasedly, almost as if to check that there is still hair on his chin. But he feels rather vulnerable standing there without armour, and is sure that avoidance is the best policy - or that if they must, fighting one at a time coming through a doorway is a better bet.

Subconsciously wiping jet-grimed hands on his tattered rags, a vicious smile starts to play across Jag's broad face. Moving back to the collapsed area, he takes only a moment to pick out and heft a fist-sized chunk of stone suitable for throwing (no attack penalty, 1d3+STR damage, range increment 10').Others can follow Jag's lead.
