The recent redesign to the Gawker media (Gawker, Lifehacker, Gizmodo, io9, Kotaku) is ridiculously hard for me to read and navigate. I'm not sure if it's because I'm old (33) and like my series of tubes arranged the way they were when I was growing up, or if it's because I have a 17 inch monitor at work, or if I'm just really lazy. (Probably all three). But I essentially can't use it any more. Even the "classic" layout (which they don't link to on the front page - I had to guess the url) seems to be filled with twice as many ads. And now that I'm thinking about the format as I try to read - I find my eye constantly drawn to the ads and the ubiquitous widgets and menus and web 2.0 garbage - crowding out everything good about the sites.

So, what alternatives are there, and why do you like them? I want to read about games, video games, sci-fi, gadgets, and generally nerdy news. Must be safe for work.

Have you tried Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/)? That's the first that comes to mind. You also might want to check out the Escapist (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/).

Seconding the Escapist, their news is phenomenal and the videos are very entertaining. They tend to focus primarily on video games though, so you'll want other places for more general geekiness.
