Hey playgrounders,

I'm a psychology major in need of some volunteers to fill out a couple of forms for my research I'm doing. I was hoping there were some people on these forums with some time to kill. :belkar:

There are two forms(not including the form that explains the research): one that relates to your personality type, and the other relates to your belief in superstitions.

If any of ya'll would like to help me out, either post here or PM me. I can either email you the stuff or make it work via private message. Either or.

Thanks in advance and I hope to see some of you game for this.

Edit: I'll probably be collecting data until around mid-March. So if you have an interest, there's plenty of time

Eh, I'll be a guinea pig...I'll try anything twice! What's your time frame?

I like your style! :smallwink: I would like to take care of this stuff asap, but ultimately I have until about mid-March to collect data(absolute latest really--I need to time to play with the data.

So...yep. Thanks for the interest. I can send you the stuff whenever. PM me an email address and I'll send you the details, or I can see about copying all the forms into a private message(admittedly, the private message method may be pretty sloppy).

Wow, I hoped I would get some interest from this, but the amount of responses I've gotten thus far is a pleasant surprise!

Everyone who has asked to be a part of this thus far should have been contacted by me now(I've sent PMs and emails to everyone who expressed interest here). I'm still on the lookout for more volunteers to participate though, so if you have an interest, just get in touch with me. I'll probably be collecting data until mid-March or so (probably something I should've mentioned).

As a Psych major myself, I'll be glad to be of aid! (And this right after a class on social solidarity versus selfishness... timing! :smalltongue:)

You can just PM it to me here. If you include your e-mail address, I can just e-mail the stuff back to you, whichever you would prefer yourself (I know that some networks might not allow access to sites like GitP, and since you asked for e-mail adresses first, you seem to prefer that).

A question though: where are you from exactly? I know for a fact that Psychology books have some differences between material used depending on location, like US&Canada vs The Rest Of The World.

Protecar
2011-02-16, 09:27 AM
@ Morph: I like the email approach, but go ahead and just PM the stuff back to me. I'm working a system now so PM is actually about as efficient as email by this point.

And to your second question--I'm in the U.S. so take that for what you will. I'm enjoying the amount of international input I've been getting in this research. Even though this research is a little mundane and simple, it's currently garnering a broader range of cultural input than, arguably, the majority of research done over here in the states.

So, thanks to everyone who has expressed interest and offered input thus far. (And apologies to anyone who has noticed some of the typos )

Don Julio Anejo

PM me. Former psych major here

PS: different cultural input in this case is actually a _bad_ thing. Not only do you get sampling bias because it 1. is an online forum, 2. is an online gaming forum and 3. is a self-report questionnaire that requires one to actually want to participate so it's not a represantative sample.

But because of different cultural input, a lot of things you may be able to find, you can't correct for culture. If your study really is about superstition and you're not blinding us, you may not be able to tell if a person X is more superstitious because they're personality Y rather than because they live in rural Estonia where _everyone_ is superstitious.

Oh, By the way, in case you're taking gender into account for some odd reason, I'm male. I'm just participating in Gender Bender Week.

If he is taking demographics into account, February makes it a really bad time to be surveying us. I think it would be interesting to compare superstitiousness with religious/philosophical beliefs with personality, but that's just me. I'll add it to MY list of potential research subjects.

Out of curiosity, Protecar, what sort of sampling are you using? Stratified or quota by personality type would make sense to me, but probably be harder to organise. Or are you just doing a quick and dirty convenience or snowball sampling? :smalltongue:

Again I am overwhelmed by how much support the playground is giving me in helping my research endeavors! I think I've contacted everybody who has requested to be a part of this now. I have read the questions pertaining to my research and would like to give them all their answer when I get a chance. However, today is my crazy day and I still have much to do. Know that I will try and get back to everyone's questions when I get a chance.

Thanks again all!

is it really necessary?

It's a consent form saying you're okay with taking part in a study. It's usually mandatory when conducting a study in North America.

The Don has it right: The first form is just legal mumbo. If you want to disregard it, that's your prerogative. I do have to provide certain information about the research before accepting you as a participant however. :smallwink:

So, yeah: the first form I just want you all to read. Then it is an assumption that you accept the premise of my research enough to participate by continuing on and filling the forms out.

Also, I've finally caught up and everyone who has requested to participate has been contacted. Again: thank you for the help!

Everyone should have received either email or PM contact with me.

I would like to take this opportunity to answer one among many of the questions and concerns that have reached me(however briefly--and I do apologize for not addressing more of these in a prompter manner).

Many have mentioned some questions or criticisms in regards to the superstition scales. I would like to say that I do agree some of the questions are not worded as well as I would like and also that I'm not an especially big fan of some of the questions.

That said, those were not my first choice for scales. Me and my academic adviser, while not exactly butted heads, had slight disagreements on which ones to use. In the end, I went along with his suggestions. As I recall(without referring back), my scale may have been more indirect. It's hard to say for certain what with how long it took to set this up.

For those who are not aware, none of these scales are mine: they are adopted from other researches who have used and validated them. To have constructed my own would have been another trial more ample, perhaps, than the research itself.

In short: there's not much I can do about the scales except give them as they are(the typos are my fault in transcribing them, though ).

Not as brief as I thought....but there you have it. Hope that answers some people's questions and let's you all know that I'm around and I am reading everyone's comments and replies--I just haven't necessarily found the time to address them all.

Thanks again, and keep the interest coming!
