View Full Version : [3.5] Ha-Naga's spells?

I'm confused, the Ha-Naga ( http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/haNaga.htm ) has Quicken Spell as one of its feats but it casts spells as a sorcerer. You can't quicken sorcerer spells, right?

It also mentions that it can cast spells from the Domain of Evil and Chaos as arcane spells, does it mean also as a 21st level sorcerer, or at will? I'm very confused as to how its spells work, if someone could help me out.

Speculation:
The Ha-Naga is from the Epic Level Handbook which is 3.0. In 3.0, the Quicken Spell feat hadn't the clarification

Special: This feat can’t be applied to any spell cast spontaneously
(including sorcerer spells, bard spells, and cleric or druid spells cast
spontaneously), since applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously
cast spell automatically increases the casting time to a full-round
action.

Thus, I think it's reasonable to assume the Ha-Naga-Designer thought that while metamagic usually lengthens casting time, quicken spell obviously doesn't, since it says so itself.

Edit:
Also, what Eldan said. Given the current rules, it can't normally quicken. If I were to annoy my players, though, I would give it 1 sorcerer level and let it trade its familiar for the metamagic specialist variant from PHBII, or to take Arcane Preparation :smalltongue:

You can indeed not quicken sorcerer spells normally, that's correct. I'd assume that whoever designed the Ha-Naga forgot that. Either give it another feat, or allow it to quicken sorcerer spells.

As for the cleric spells: they are added to the list of spells known.

No need for an extra level, just switch one of its feats to Rapid Metamagic from Complete Mage. It's an epic critter, it should be able to spare a feat somewhere (and get the required Spellcraft prerequisite).

That's a good idea. I didn't know there was a complete mage as well as a complete arcane. I'll have to look that one up.

I tell you, this is the most mature and helpful forums I've ever been on. Such a drastic comparison to any video game forums full of angry children.

This forum is more full of crazy, but nice children and frequently childish adults :smallwink:

This means it can have spells know from outside the regular sorcerer list, but stating that it can also select from the chaos and evil list sounds redundant, as the spells found in those domains are all on the standard cleric list. Edit: chaos hammer and unholy blight are unique to the domains...

Of course, you can always advance its HD, and give it practiced spellcaster, multispell+auto-quicken.
