Problems with Maptool

Hey, I'm doing a Dawn of the Worlds campaign on the forums and I'm having some problems making my map. I tried using maptool to make a few continents but its alot harder than I thought.

I can't figure out how to bring the grid to the front of the image, I draw the continents and they are just laying ontop of the grid.

And I dont know how to draw something without it automatically connecting the lines to make it a polygon.

Im sure these are simple fixes so please help me out as soon as possible

I don't remember having this problem... though you might want to switch the drawing layer to the background?
