This is the IC for Gnoll Bait!

Since everything is in place through the OOC (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10428377#post10428377), I'm going to go ahead and start off.

You are in a small outpost near the edge of the swamp, you have been briefed by the officials who left earlier today. They urged you to stay together and be ready for ambushes at any time. They also included to not get caught, as getting caught, means being eaten, you think to yourself "That was not on the recruitment poster"

(All but Sazai are present) You all arrived with the authorities earlier today, with the exception of Laurent who walked/flew/whatever'd in on his own.

**Please get to know each other IC and make some basic plans.*

Details about your surroundings:

The outpost can comfortably hold 4 and rather uncomfortably hold 8.
It looks like this

http://www.ageofempires.co.nz/images/aoe2/buildings/outpost.jpg

Its ladder can be retracted and you can see out toward the swamp through a window that two could be able to shoot from at the same time. Your horses are all tied to the outpost(Those 6 of you that came with the gov. were provided with horses). Under the outpost in a cellar are some basic necessities. These include some flour, sugar, more than enough oats for the horses(or oatmeal if the urge hits you), dried fruits(raisins), smoked fish and beef, and a huge supply of normal arrows and bolts. You have been given access to this store if you must, but it is recommended for emergency use only; the more times you open it, the less concealed it becomes.

The two days journey back to civilization as you know it spawns off to the west behind you. The swamp lies about a mile ahead. Marking the edge of the swamp is a crude fence and gate that no longer functions. Occasionally, when the wind is just right, you can hear the doggish yips of gnolls in the swamp ahead.

Armest looks around at his companions, sizing them up for how useful they'd be in a fight. After studying the group in front of him, he grumbles about having to go out into the swamp, then addresses the group. "So, who's ready to get this job over and done with? I for one want to do this as quickly as possible and get back to civilization. He then moves over to the window, keeping an eye out for gnolls.

Seems to me like we should just head out as soon as possible. I'll be keeping watch.

I'll move out and climb onto the roof if it's made of a strong enough material. Otherwise I'll be out on the ladder and climb down it a few feet.

Sazai Airdancer

"What's so great about Civilization? I could stay out indefinitely. For one, it's quiet.." She left the other reasons up to her companions imagination. She started to size up the rest of the gang for herself, noticing a large number in this motley bunch. Everyone was willing to get a piece of this cash, even if it meant the wholesale slaughter of a group of creatures. But what did she care? She'd never been a bleeding heart.

I'll move out and climb onto the roof if it's made of a strong enough material.

The roof creaks and moans as you attempt to climb up onto it against (Climb DC5 No roll needed). You easily make the climb and find the roof to be easy place to hide and snipe. On the roof you find the base of what appears to be either a flag pole or a signal light. Either way, the top is broken and nowhere in sight. On the front edge of the tower you find an unlit and oil-less brazier used to hold burning oil and to light arrows aflame. Sketched into the roof is a crude set of tally marks. It reads 17, presumably dead somethings.

Brazier

EDIT-It showed up in the preview, so if you actually care; here (http://stronghold2.heavengames.com/cpix/brazier.jpg)

The brazier is usable to quickly light arrows on fire as a swift action, assuming you add oil.

Laurent

The drow dressed in black robes marked with a simple flame design over the heart watched the wild elf climb into the roof, smirking. He stepped outside and with a command his boots glowed briefly and he rose off the ground, Levitating up to the position of the wild elf. The wizard looked about and nodded. "Indeed, a good vantage point. I could lob some decent fireballs from up here. And spot enemies for a decent distance at night. I am Laurent, what is your name hunter?"

Physical description: Dominik is a tall man considering the time period, standing at five feet, nine inches, with a fairly athletic build, brown hair and eyes. He keeps a beard, and it appears he cuts his hair with his dagger. He wears the outfit of a woodsman, with a buckler around his shoulder with a strap that allows him to quickly sling it about in place, his tunic overlayed by a fine chain shirt. His cloak is clasped with an emblem of Hextor, and across his back is a composite bow with a small gem set within the wood which crackles with energy. At his hip is a scabbard accompanied by a sword and there is a sheathe in his boot for a dagger. Being that he is a divine warrior of an Evil deity, he has an unsettling presence, an aura about his person that puts those nearby ill at ease.

As for his current actions, Dominik sits near another of the outpost's windows, looking out towards the swamp. He then looks upward, towards where the elf sits atop the roof. "Agreed. We should move, soon; gnolls are aggressive. This is a servicable defensive position, but we are at a disadvantage sitting still."

"Aye, we don't want to get stuck out in that swamp in the dark if we can avoid it. We need to make use of all the light we have." The statement is soft, but there is confidence behind it. The elf is shortish, but fairly well muscled, and if his clothing is any indication, no stranger to spending extended amounts of time outdoors.

Mo is as slight as a kobold gets. His scales have a green hue. His clothes are dark gray-green, with many pockets. Around his neck is a necklace with several teeth and it the center of it is a disc with many colors on it. He has a backpack he never takes off, same goes for his goggles.

He speaks with Armest, since he is a reptilian brother and just as Mo he, apparently, wishes to get in, kill the gnolls and get out. I highly approve his plan.

I agree with you, but still I advise caution. Also it may prove prudent to secure this building. If we need somewhere to fall back to, with a few gnolls chasing us, we should know that we are safe here.

I turn around and tell the Air mephling to face the telescope and say: You seem like a competent creature. How about you and I go and scout a bit around the outpost? We will not go further than 300ft. I just want to know, if I'm running, where the quicksand is, where to set up an ambush and where to hide. I don't enjoy the thought of being inside a wooden humanmade building if a gnoll army comes here. If there is someone here that knows how to track you are most welcome to follow.

Look at this dandy telescope here, let's see what can I see through it.

theos911
2011-02-24, 06:34 AM
The outpost itself is not a very defensible building. It appears to be more of a scouting building. The legs could be easily pulled out by someone of a bit higher than average strength. The walls will probably stop arrows, but that is about it. See OOC for repairing the tower.

Moranica

Buzz looks around at his comrades. Being a light skinned air mephling with white hair and blue eyes usually made him stand out in crowds, but not so much with this group.

Quite the merry bunch, where did they find such a wide collection?? Well, I suppose that could mean they are each exceptional in their own right.

"Scouting sounds good, me and Stinky (small air elemental) over here don't like staying inside. It's not exactly a good idea to use my powers of wind and lightning in a confined space. I am a good spotter, if I may say so myself, and used to observing over large distances. I'll be above the roof most of the time. I'll send stinky back to you if we find any gnolls close by."

Buzz and Stinky then fly out of the window, have a good look around and wait for any other scouts.

Just having a good look around.

I have a feeling I'm gonna regret this... Why do you call it Stinky?

Moranica
2011-02-24, 08:12 AM
Fear not! It is only a name to tease him. He wants to become a stinking cloud elemental, but knows no way of becoming one. He heard stories about such an elemental, and how it could win battle with just it's presence.

Basicly, by reminding him about his ambitions he both keeps his focus and remembers that he'll need me to get there.

Kaww
2011-02-24, 08:19 AM
That is a relief. I thought it had something to do with the story of it's origin. Is it intelligent, can it perform tricks? Does it make a good scout and does it understand me?

Moranica
2011-02-24, 08:32 AM
It does know some kind of language, but I don't speak it. I do share an emotional connection to it though.

It's scouting ability isn't that great, as it's not very smart and doesn't care much for detail. Stinky is better suited as a very fast, mind you, not lightning fast, scout. At full speed it can fly u to 45 miles / hour (100 ft fly speed), which is about 10 times faster then I am.

Kaww
2011-02-24, 08:37 AM
Can it speak loudly in it's language? Can it mimic other voices? I apologize for being this inquisitive. It's just that, even tho I have heard the tales of elemental creatures, I haven't seen any except for few water elementals in the swamps. He says this, thinking: "It could cover our tracks and infiltrate enemy camps with ease... I should remember to use this little critter."

Well, he sounds like an astmathic patient with lots of hisses and such. I doubt he has the physiology to actually sound normal. It could serve as a distraction, but it's rather frail and I am rather fond of him.

Kaww
2011-02-24, 09:06 AM
Yes, yes, it is only natural for you to worry about your little stinky. He is as valuable to me as any member of a kobold tribe. I shall keep an eye on both of you as if you were of my kind, have no worries. Best of luck with your scouting attempt. I should really look into this here dandy telescope and try to improve it.

"I'm not going to sit here - at the very least, I'm going to do some scouting. I'll alert you all if I see any gnolls. I will not provoke them, yet." So my dear comrades how do you feel about making this place sturdier? Since the brave warriors are out hunting/gathering, we should make a nice safe outpost here. The drow stays at roof height, levitating around and examinging the roof of the tower. While he does so he answers Daelren's question. "I wish to increase my arcane power to rival any other practicioner of the school of evocation. I want to find new ways to call energy from nothing to freeze, burn, and electrify. I'll be the best evoker in the world someday, and this seemed like a good chance to prove my powers. For example, as long as I don't use all of my fire spells up I can produce a gout of flame as often as I like. It's not as strong as regular spells but it is good to prevent me from running out of magic in aprlonged battle."

Chuckling he descends a bit, smirking as he speaks, These ears aren't just for show. For your information I had plenty of my share in tunnels and frankly find them good for only funneling the enemy into one area to burn them all. If some fellow guards get caught in the blast it is their own fault for getting in the way of my spell. I don't see what I could possibly help you with anyway, I'm likely the least physically capable one here, so unless you have some task I can accomplish I will do as I please."

"I will be more than useful when the fighting starts. Just besure you don't get too close to any clusters, I like to target them with my fireballs first." He then replies in undercommon, his tone different than his common speech, "To be honest I am exiled. I not here for the funds from this mission which can help me search for more knowledge to increase my power. And frankly I like to burn things." He only had one 0 level spell readied that would be of any help, so he began to see if there was any damage to the supports or any other part of the outpost that he can fix with it.

All that I can say from the info you provided is that they are most likely kobolds native to this swamp. Since you described the fins, they may be more native to the waters of the swamp rather than the land. Still I don't know what they could hope to mine here.

After a few miles you come across a mule train. This foolhardy expedition has met with disaster. The 8 mules are unladen, bearing little more than saddlebags. The caravan master and his four guards are visibly frightened, leaping in fear at your approach and forming a small knot of swords and shields.

The surrounding terrain clearly shows evidence of recent and heavy gnoll traffic, and the men’s fear is utterly genuine. As you glance in the direction the gnolls obviously took, the caravan master shakes his head in dismay and says, “It’s too late for those poor fellows. The gnolls will eat them by sundown.”

If you are reckoning on catching those beasts I suggest you move fast. The longer you dawdle here, the more ambushes they set up.

"After Moving his pony away from the gnolls Mo finishes his spell. An area of mud briefly bubbles before taking on a slightly shiny gleam as his spell completes."

"The gnolls (having not seen the spell being cast) run forward through the mud, straight into an extra slippery patch where every one of them comes crashing down in a grubby mess of flailing gnolls and mud."

"Armest moves to the front left of the group and lets out a cone of flame hitting the 4 leftmost gnolls. The closest ones take heavy damage while those further away seems less affected.

"Buzz lets off an arrow at the most burned of the gnolls. The arrow hits its mark true; the gnoll cries out, but does not fall silent"

"Daelran also lets off an arrow, true to its mark, it kills a burning gnoll instantly."

"Dominik moves forward and strikes at the gnoll buzz shot. His strike lands soft, but ends the gnoll nonetheless."

"Aedryll moves slightly forward and lashes out with his chain. It wraps around the gnoll as though it has a life of its own. The spikes cut deep(max damage-NICE) leaving the gnoll inches from death."

Aedryll lets out a small yelp and drops his chain to avoid being pulled into the trap himself."

"This was only a scouting party. Does anyone have an idea on how to approach them? I believe that Daelren and I could easily snipe them from the treetops. "I do so enjoy burning things... As it were I could circle around, perhaps use levitation and pull myself from tree to tree to get to one side, then set fire to one side of their camp. Being up in the trees will help conceal me, and then if our ranged fighters snipe from opposite where I set the fires we can get them confused. While they try to rally defenses against the ranged fighters our fire breating friend here can hit them from the side."

Laurent traces his finger in the dirt, making a small layout of what he assumes their camp will be like and showing where he will start the fires on one side while the ranged fighters attack from the other, then marking where the melee fighters will charge into the gnolls.

Before the gnolls have a chance to move, Buzz makes his way forward and with a drop of his hand lets out the most unbearably-loud, god-awful sound you could ever imagine. It knocks 5 of the 7 gnolls straight on their backs. The wave continues on through the forest, tearing the leaves from branches and sending birds into the sky by the hundreds. As one gnoll begins to stand, Mo sends an arrow clean through its chest, just missing its heart. It falls back to the ground in a muted thud, its mouth foaming and chest bleeding.(0 hp) As the rest of the world begins to catch up with what just happened, Jergmo sends an arrow through the shoulder of the nearest standing gnoll. It yelps in pain, but does not fall. Aedryll quickly springs to action, running toward a gnoll at a lightning pace and poising to strike. Finally, after a few moments of concentration Laurent shifts his eyes, chooses a target and lets forth a stream of burning fire from his fingertips at one of the downed gnolls. The gnoll is left engulfed in flames, its arm flailing and its pelt incinerating.

With a now clear path, Jergmo quickly makes his way forward in pursuit of the gnolls. Laurent seems still for a second, until all of a sudden a burst of flame materializes about thirty foot off. The burst cremates the already burned gnoll. However, the other gnoll manages to roll behind the tree far enough to sustain only minor injuries.
