All - [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant's Camp]

It's raining.

It's been raining for three days. It's not a hard rain but three days of rain will cause trouble no matter how hard it is.

You've arrived at small merchant camp at the base of a mountain trail which leads to the small mountain town of Brixham. You know of Brixham, everyone around here does, if you haven't formally been informed you've been informally informed. Rumours speak of both terrible and great things happening there lately, many travellers have whispered rumours of a vast treasure and horrible dark consequences.

The camp is in a panic right now, looking up the mountain path you can see that a small caravan heading up to the town has been crushed by a landslide. Merchants and travellers alike attempt to pry the victems free while others moan how the pass MUST be cursed.

Introduce yourself how you wish and go about how you believe your character would react to this situation. If you have an idea how you'd like to use a roll 'ie: Could I use History to...' or ideas on an action you'd like to take but don't know the roll go for it and I'll assist where I can.

Matrim shouts, "Quickly, we must get the survivors free!" and immediately rushes toward the scene of the landslide to lend his rather impressive strength to the rescue efforts.

Dia, Elven Druid

Dia rushes to the scene, quickly finding those who can be healed and administering aid. Once that is complete (and I expect it to take a while), she will utilize her Nature skill to figure out how to avoid more landslides happening here (ie - do we just need to trigger a few more landslides or can we just fortify it in a few select spots).

Heal check: [roll0]
Nature check: [roll1]

I went ahead and posted both just to be faster about it, but obviously the Heal check comes first, then after everyone else goes, my Nature check will go.

"Quickly everyone - if some of you can help pull them out, I'll tend to their wounds!"

Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

Taking in the scene in front of him, Illyrion could do nothing but stare. However, he does not stare for long as he instantly moves to lend a helping hand wherever he can. While he might not be as strong as the elven fighter, any help is better than none at all.

Ravinna, Human Bard

From under a dry overhang in the merchant's camp, Ravinna looked at the caravan, half buried in grey mud, then she looked up at the rain falling. Then back at the caravan. On the one hand, she did feel sorry for the people, but on the other, she really didn't want to get her hair wet. It took forever to dry. Besides, she wasn't about to haul people out of the rubble; she didn't have the muscle for it. Or the inclination, if she was being honest with herself. Let the nice elf with the strong arms handle that.

She had just about convinced herself that there was nothing she could do to help anyway when she noticed another elf. This one looked very much as if it needed the shower it was currently getting. However, it also looked like it needed help healing the wounded, something Ravinna excelled at, if she did say so herself. She sighed, pulled her hood up as best she could to protect her hair, and ran out into the rain.

"You there," she said when she arrived at the scene, "Elf woman. Let me help you with that." She carefully checked the wounds of the poor fools who had gotten themselves caught in a landslide and did what she could to help them. As long as it didn't involve getting mud on her pants, mind you.

I'm going to try a cooperation with Dia's Heal check.

[roll0]

EDIT: OK, looks like I succeed, so Dia gets a +2, right?

These imbeciles got their selves buried under an earth slide and even if she didn't like it she had to help them, if only to keep up the deception.
She began to dig and called over to the people that where not helping:

Matrim --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

The scene unfolds as Matrim rushes in to assist, the mud sloshing into his boots as he dashes forward. Showing off his impressive strength he lifts several of the larger boulders out of the way which others were having trouble with.

Soon Matrim and the workers he's with come across a particularily large boulder which has crushed half a carriage and buried the other half. Within cries for help emenate. It will take more than a few men to move this out of the way.

Dia & Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

Dia arrives on scene, taking to the survivors which have been pulled out already. She splints and bandages injuries performing flawless jobs to even some of the toughest cases. Soon she have others assisting her, realising the virtue of your healing skills.

Ravinna joins to assist minutes later and helps stem the flow of injured bodies, making sure those in need of aid get it in time. Rain pours down on you as men run about setting up blankets as temporary healing stations. A couple others nearby set up a canvas as well.

"Miss! Miss!" someone shouts as two men drag a screaming woman in. She's got a spear run through her abdomen which has broken in half, splintering within the skin.

Correct, you assisted and granted a +2 to her heal checks

Illyrion --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

You stare at the scene for what feels like minutes as everything happens at once before finally snapping out of it. People are hurt everywhere and even more are buried, all sites are covered with dozens of people trying to lend aid.

You take note of one job which only has one other man on it, clearing the pass. Maybe there's something you can do to help here? The avalanche is a thick mix of mud and rock and is about 10 feet high blocking the pass from end to end. Maybe there's something you can do here?

Since you're looking for places to assist I've given you this but if you deem your abilities to be more beneficial to someone elses situation you can choose to assist one of the other characters however you wish.

Syn --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

Seeing as the other avenues for help have been adequately attended to Syn decides she's going to play up her disguise and see if she can get those idling about to act.

Several of the merchants who can only watch look ashamed as you tout your speech and soon they rush in to assist in several of the needed places, leaving only a few lone gawkers.

"You can't seriously believe that!" one of the left overs retorts. "We've all heard the rumours and now this avalanche attacks the caravan unprovoked. This entire mountain is cursed!"

Dia, Elven Druid

Hearing Matrim's call, yet seeing the screaming woman with the spear through her, Dia appears torn. She desperately wants to go help move the bolder, yet there's this nagging feeling that "it will take more than a few men to move this out of the way." If mere men cannot do it, surely a female Penguin can.

But Dia has more pressing worries. Deciding that the screaming woman takes immediate precedence, she sets off to work on her.

Dia calls out, "Can anyone magically heal?"

Looking down at the woman, she attempts to comfort her while pulling out the spear and tending to the wound. "Tell me how this happened. No, don't yell. That won't help any. Who stabbed you?" This is said while bandaging the wounds.

If I need another heal check, here it is:
[roll0]
I don't think I'd need a charisma check to get the woman to talk to her doctor, but if I do then I'll just wait for someone else to interrogate her.

Dia yells out, "If you men can't get that bolder moved by the time I finish with this patient, I'll come help. She needs my immediate attention."

Just as Illyrion makes the first step towards the sole man trying to clear away the avalanche, he hears the urgent call of the elven warrior. This time, he does not waste any time and hastens over to the help move the boulder. Saving the trapped clearly has priority than trying to clear the avalanche. Lives might be at stake too, after all, since the trapped people could be hurt as well.

"I'll help as well!" the halfling calls out as he joins the other men's endeavor to move the huge boulder, partially hearing the call for a magical healer from somewhere else. Knowing that he cannot help, Illyrion ignores the call. Let the professional deal with the wounded.

Ravinna, Human Bard

Dia calls out, "Can anyone magically heal?"

"I can," Ravinna answers, "and it's just as well, because I think your berries and bandages aren't going to help a spear through the gut." She looks up and motions toward the boulders. "Go help your kinsman or whatever, I've got this."

She stands up and produces her flute from its sheath hanging from her belt, as if it were a blade itself. She moves it towards her lips, pauses, and begins to play.

Medicinal Serenade in G Minor, to start with. Fairly typical stuff, but she can't bear to regurgitate Rachmaniov without some variation. Eventually, she segues into Rubert's Panacea Symphony No. 8--the woodwind melody, naturally. She doesn't have a bassoon on her.

Using Majestic Word; she can spend a healing surge and gets an extra 1d6+5, plus 5 temporary hit points.

Matrim & Illyrion --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

Illyrion joins to aid with the large boulder along with a couple of other merchants but the fight is against more than just the weight of the rock. It seems to have wedged itself nicely into the ground.

The rain continues to pour around you making it difficult to keep stable footing in the mud.

Dia & Ravinna --- [Mount Pass Base - Marchant Camp]

Dia successfully removes the spear and cleans out the wound while the woman sputters and gasps. Ravinna pulls out her flute and uses the magic she's learned through song to mend the wound before allowing Dia to bandage it up.

During the performance the woman explains what happened.

"W-we were leading the caravan...my h-husband and I." she coughs up a bit of blood and takes a moment to regain control over her breathing. "Th-that's when I saw movement off the s-side of the pass. I...tried to sh-shout a warning but a dark figure r-revealed itself from cover a-and the next th-thing I knew I had been hit..."

Afterwards it seems the woman is going to make it and while there are still injured coming in none of them are nearly as severe as the spear case.

Matrim --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

You rush off in search of useful items amongst the wreckage and are unable to find anything which is still strong enough to act as a lever. You do however find a tarp which was originally fitted over one of the carriages which might help with traction issues.

Syn --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

Ignoring those still blind to your pleas you decide to try a different avenue in aiding with the boulder situation. You power your energies into your attack and while you do manage to chip away a bit it's less than you had expected.

"Oh, a dark figure!" Ravinna mutters to herself as she leaves the woman to recuperate in peace. "Well, that really clears up what's been going on around here. It's not a curse, it's just a mysterious dark figure going around stabbing people! Much better." She sighs. "I just hope this isn't their favorite spear, so they don't come looking for it."

The rain continues to pour around you making it difficult to keep stable footing in the mud.

Since she has her flute out and is already soaked to the bone in this infernal rain--Mental note, "Infernal Rain" would make a great name for a song--it occurs to her that maybe she can help with the boulder after all. She puts her flute to her lips one more time, walking a little closer to where the menfolk are struggling. The first few notes of the Manual Labour Rag erupt from her instrument, filling the air with a jaunty tune.

I'm going move over to where the boulder people are and play Inspire Competence to give all allies a +2 on their next skill check with one designated skill. I'm assuming the skill in question is Athletics, but if not, I'll use Acrobatics so they keep their balance while pushing. Whatever will help, really.

Ravinna & Matrim --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

After her mild rant, possibly aided by the weather conditions, Ravinna trudges over to the large boulder which has a cart pinned and blocked off with survivors inside.

The boulder has half the cart crushed and is buried in the mud about 2 feet, jutting out about 6 above the dirt. It's currently supported by the framework of the cart and several other boulders around the cart which have been deemed by merchants as too risky to move, lest the large boulder crush the cart completely.

Ravinna starts her song while Matrim removes a chunk of the boulder with his sturdy, pole-like spear.

Athletics is a good choice for moving a boulder. Also, those who are attacking the boulder, you're effectively removing mass to make it easier to move. Is there a time limit on that skill bonus or is it just 'the next athletics check?'

Matrim deals 6 damage to the boulder after DR. Boulder has taken 8 damage.

Also, attack rolls are only really relevant on a 1 which means your blow deflected off wrong or maybe you accidentally dropped your weapon or slipped.

Dia, Elven Druid of Penguin-ness.

Dia nods to Ravinna in appreciation. Looking around, she realizes the best use of her talents is with the bolder. While Dia is not strong, maybe she can use her mind to make the task easier. Moving up to the bolder, she looks to see if there is a place to get leverage on it. Then, she looks for something sturdy enough to use as a lever against it.

I'm not sure which of these are required, so I'll just do a roll for everything and let the DM sort it out.

To find a spot to place a lever, Perception [roll0]
To find something sturdy enough to use as a lever, Perception or Nature [roll1]

While looking around, Dia notices that the avalanche is not natural. She calls out a warning for everyone, "Be ware! This avalanche was not naturally occurring and people were attacked. While the culprits may be gone, they may not be far away, either."

Matrim looks at the weapon in his hands and says, "How silly of me to have overlooked my weapon when looking for a lever. Give me a hand with this, will you?" he says to the tiefling next to him. With that, he puts the spear in a likely spot and heaves with all his might.

Dia, Matrim, Syn, Illyrion, Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass Base - Merchant Camp]

Dia joins the struggle in freeing the trapped survivors, finding the ideal place to insert a lever. Following Dia's guidance, Matrim inserts his spear into the optimal location and levers the boulder with all his might. Syn joins Matrim shortly and adds her strength to his.

The boulder jolts for a moment and lazily rolls forward and off the carriage as a combined effort of many. The survivors inside, a father and his apprentice son, are dragged out and immediately looked after.

Five strangers brought their abilities together out of need on the base of the mountain pass that day. Stories of their efforts would spread quickly.

The rain trickles steadily as the merchants around you begin to take the treated wounded back to camp while others begin the sombre duty of burying their dead. All that's really left is the pass now, blocked from end to end. No cart could get through here but individuals could probably climb the blockage if needed.

Matrim's athletics check: 19 + 2 (tarp) + 4 (lever) + 1 (reduced boulder mass) + 2 (prime lever placement) + 2 (aid another) +2 (aid another for Illyrion if he does so)
30-32 total

Matrim, Syn and Ravina assist with the clean up efforts in their own ways, the rain slowing to a mild drizzle as they work through a good hour of the day.

After a good hour you've managed to collapse some of the barrier blocking the way, making it easier to climb over but still unpassable by carriages.

Part of the problem seems to be the lack of assistance you're getting from the merchants who don't seem to feel the need to take care of this problem right now, especially in these conditions.

One by one Dia, Ravinna, Syn, Illyrion and Matrim make their way to the large tent, either on their own or by being led.

Inside the rain drums softly on the canvas while the smell of roasting duck wafts through the tent. A steepled hole in the roof allows a fire to be built on the inside, providing a great deal of warmth.

Several merchants sit inside on makeshift benches and assembled stools, two of which are the man and his son from earlier who had been trapped in the carriage under the large boulder.

"And here are our heroes of the day!" the man exclaims after you each make your way in. "Sit down, grab a plate of duck! We have a pot of potatoes staying warmed near the fire as well, grab some! Please."

After the heroes situate themselves the merchant decides it's time for business, regardless whether or not someones mouth may be full of potato.

"Thank you all for accepting my invitation, it's the very least I could do to repay you all for saving our lives." he begins, gesturing to his son and himself. "Unfortunately I must ask you for more help..."

He paces away from his seat a few steps, stroking his short trimmed beard.

"...my wife is in Brixham, and she's pregnant. The baby is due to come any day now and I'm afraid I can't wait for the pass to clear and become safe. I heard of your efforts out there and you five are the most able bodied individuals here."

Without pausing for his answer, she continues, "And what sort of compensation for our time are you offering? We are all very busy men and women; I, for one, am expected at a music festival several days from now for which I will be paid quite well."

"Yes, the young lady has it right. My son and I would like to request your aid in escorting us to town, it goes without saying that there will be a sizable reward."

The merchant leader wanders over to the side of the tent where a long package wrapped in leather is sitting on a tarp. He brings the package over and removes the ties, letting it fall open before your eyes.

Contained within is a beautiful longsword, shimmering with magic. It has a few gems fitted into the handle and the entire thing is masterfully crafted. A symbol of some sort adorns the handle as well.

"Some of you may have heard the rumours of treasure in Brixham and to this, I can attest. This blade is just one of many pieces my operations in town have unsurfaced and is worth more gold than many of us have ever seen. I can't find anything about appraising in the PHB, would a Thievery check help me guess? My Insight is +3, my Thievery is +11.

You can all climb over the blockage easily enough that since there's no hurry to do so I won't require rolls.

Ravinna, Human Bard

With companions now more built for the rough-and-tumble than she, Ravinna is happy to stick to the middle of the pack, near the merchant and his son. "I stay with you and let them do the hard work," she confides to the youth with a wink. "That's called middle management." What she doesn't mention is that brigands sometimes kidnap children of the wealthy for ransom, and that she's decided to stick by him to ensure that it doesn't happen on her watch.

She draws her new songblade from its scabbard and gives a few practice swings with it towards the rocks, just to make sure it's in tune. She sings a note with each swing: "Do." Slash! "Ray." Thrust! "Me." Parry! After a few moments, she's confident that either the sword is on-pitch, or she's so far off pitch that she can't tell anymore. Either one will have to do.

She sheathes the blade, ready to depart.

Ravinna will stay with the boy and the merchant, but within reach of the boy, helping him up the rocks, that sort of thing. Keeping an eye out for lurkers with Perception, but nothing specific besides that.

You hear some clamoring about on the other side of the rockslide. After a moment, a dwarf comes climbing up a rock. He's a little short for most dwarves, but he appears very stout, with his unkept beard going down to the middle of his chest. Seeing everyone, he immediately heads toward the merchant. "Ye were right ta suspect foul doin's here. Forgive me fer comin' ahead to check it out. See that ledge there", pointing toward the left side of the pass, "that's where tha boulder came from. It was way too heavy to 'of fallen down on its own, even with tha rain. No doubt, it was moved by somethin'. Tha rain has washed out any evidence of whether it was pushed or magicked outta place, tho'."

Seeing the rest of the group, he turns toward them while vainly attempting to wipe the mud off his hands. It's hard to tell where the mud stops and his skin begins, as appears to have wallered all in the mud before you arrived. "Greetin's, the name's Goresh. "Indeed, we have no more time to waste." the merchant replies in response to Ravinna's question. "If anyone else is coming they'll have to catch up. Besides, I'm sure you're all capable enough."

"Oh! I've completely forgotten my manners!" The merchant pipes in again, just before you head out. "My name is Elric and this is my son, Peter."

Peter, the teenage merchant's apprentice to his father, is busy flushing furiously and sticking near Ravinna. He can barely fluster out a "How do you do?"

With that the four of you and your charges head over the blockage with little difficulty.

Rain drums on the muddy ground as a chorus of squashing boots heads up the mountain pass to Brixham, only the highest quality cloaks would keep travelers completely dry for more than an hour in this weather.

On the journey, Elric speaks about his lovely wife, Iris, who's due to give birth any day now. He hopes he hasn't already missed it and worries a bit because he hasn't gotten word from the town in a couple weeks.

After about an hour of trekking up the path you're presented with an interesting decision.

Ahead are two paths, a thin path on the left heads a bit inward towards the center of the mountain with a steep slope while a wider path on the right follows the rim of the mountain on a more gradual slope.

"The left path is for travellers." Elric explains as you approach the fork. "Last I had heard it had been blocked off by an earlier avalanche though. The path on the right is usually meant for carts and can be a bit precarious."

Peter has been casually wielding his sword in an amateur fashion and is obviously trying to look competant. He also keeps stealing looks at Ravinna but hasn't actually said anything.

"Well, if time is fleeting, I don't think we should waste it with a path that may well be blocked anyway. I'm sure everyone here can handle the cart path, right?" she says, knowing that the boy will agree so as to appear brave.

Casually moving a step ahead from the group, she whispers to Matrim, "And there's someone following us—or more accurately, waiting for us, up ahead on the mountain. A person, but I can't make them out. If we're going to get ambushed, I'd rather we be on as wide a path as possible, lest one of us go tumbling down the mountain unexpectedly."

She waits for a response before returning to her place in the middle of the pack.

If I get a chance to tell Illyrion without the civilians hearing me, I will. I'd also like to make a Bluff check to make my movements seem natural, so it doesn't look like I'm consciously alerting people of something.

"I was thinking the same thing." Elric replies to the group decision. "But I figured you, as experienced fighters, and would know what's best."

Peter, as expected, says nothing but nods furiously in flushed agreement.

With that the six of you head down the path on the right, walking along what used to be well worn cart tracks. The path is about thirty feet wide from wall to ledge and sturdy protective fencing is placed to prevent carts from accidentally veering off the side of the mountain. It's squishy under your boots but the years of heavy load travel have packed it tight enough to prevent it from hampering your movement.

During the next hour of travel Elric lets on a bit more about the treasure he had presented earlier.

"It's actually a pretty interesting story. See." he begins as the rain spatters his cloak. "It all goes back to when Brixham was founded..."

Elric goes on to explain how Brixham is built on solid rock except, it seems, his house, which had the living room collapse ten years ago. Nobody was hurt but the family discovered that their home had been built over top a cave system and the ceiling had finally caved in from the weight of the house.

After a couple days of exploration he, and some other villagers, stumbled upon a temple of sorts buried within the mountain and marked with marvelous symbols. The stone is apparently speckled with deep onyx and the ceilings are lined with luminous moss. Within that temple they found priceless artifacts.

It wasn't long before they had routed the unused temple and each taken a share of the grand wealth obtained from it's excavation. It's actually how Elric started his life as a merchant. A few months ago he decided to send another team into the mountain, now having the wealth and stability to explore deeper for any other possible treasure.

At about this point you come to a large, wooden bridge which looks fairly sturdy and bridges a large gap in the ascension up the mountain.

"Only another hour from this point!" Elric pipes in, excited to see home again.

Come here and take a look at it, will you?" She leans on Matrim's shoulder and waits for the halfling to come over.

Once both of her original companions are near her, she leans down and begins unlacing her boot. Her dark hair falls down in front of her face as she does so, hiding the fact that she begins whispering quietly in the pounding rain: "There are at least two people waiting at that bridge to ambush us: someone in a cloak above us, and a fuzzy monster-type at the end of the bridge. Plus, I think someone's going to push that boulder up there on us, just like they did with the caravan. Tell the dwarf if you can, too." She pulls her foot from her boot and rubs it. In my experience, most times the party is outnumbered like this at least a few of the enemies will be minions, meaning that they have normal defenses and damage for a creature of their level, but they are killed by anything that's not auto-hit. This may just be a particularly difficult fight without minions too though, so it's a good idea not to assume any of them are.

Goresh Ironforge, Dwarven Barbarian

Goresh growls and draws his axe.

Initiative Check: [roll0]
NOTE: I may be wrong on the modifier, but I wanted to roll so I didn't hold anything up. I'll edit this post in a 2-3 hours when I can get to my sheet.

Edit: I was wrong, it's +5, so my result is a whopping 7!

A moderately sized and very furry man slides down the slope and jumps to land on the south side of the bridge, and fires off two shots from his bow at the hyenas.

Surprise Round

Acrobatics (Balance) to land on Q13
(1d20+14)[26]

Burn Action Point to Attack
Twin Shot on P1 and S1
Attack (vs AC): (1d20+11)[27], (1d20+11)[26]
Hit: (1d12+4)[8] cold damage, (1d12+4)[12] cold damage

Initiative: (1d20+9)[14]

He lands in front of the party, very near to the Halfling. There is a beast holding a large and ornate bow (hand-craved, if I may boast) with claws, fur, pointed ears and all. "Don't just stand there, kill the harpies!"

Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

Illyrion ignores the arrival of the furry man and his remark, preparing his Staff of Ruin and Rhythm Dagger, already feeling the chaotic-arcane energies in his veins sing to be unleashed upon his foes.

Initiative: [roll0]

Also, I believe I need to roll my Wild Soul damage type...I think I should have rolled that at the begin of the game since somewhere before the game started it is save to assume Illyrion had "extended rest" to active Wild Soul's effect: [roll1]
[EDIT]: According to the chart (PHB II, p. 137), I gain resist 5 to Cold damage until the end of my next extended rest. My arcane powers ignore any target's resistance to that damage type up to the value of my resistance.

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

A stranger reveals himself from hiding and slides down the side of the mountain to aid the party, much to everyone's surprise. He sinks two expertly timed shots into the bear sized Hyenas as he lands.

A hyena approaches Matrim and laughs nervously, failing to put Matrim and Goresh on edge before lunging at Matrim, chomping down on a vulnerable spot in his armor. Acid coats the beast's mouth and begins to burn Matrim. These are no ordinary hyenas.

The three rock dwarves begin to bombard the bridge with hefty boulders, causing fragments to splinter away. Already the bridge begins to buckle and crack under the assault. It won't last long to a beating of this magnitude.

The harpies swoop in, one landing next to Matrim and taking advantage of the distaction the hyena's give, clawing at him, the other lands on a barrier near Illyrion and the new comer, Kalek. She begins singing a beautiful song which lures several of the allies close to her and roots them on the spot.

Ravinna's Turn

Comments:

I realise Action Points aren't usually allowed during a surprise round but it was for dramatic purposes so I let it slide.

Question for you all. Would you prefer to all go at once (ie: I lump the monsters together) or staggered initiative like this?

As per SPoD's request when she originally started this game, you have a day to post your turn, upon failure to do so it will be taken for you.

Since I can't access your sheets today, you'll have to confirm hits for me please (I confirmed what I could). You can just post whether you resist/dodge/block the attack if applicable.

SPoD. You're immobilised (assuming I didn't guess your Will wrong). This simply means you cannot move from that square. You can still make attacks as normal and draw items/weapons and you still get a move action (which you could exchange for a minor action to do more minor action stuff). At the end of your turn, make a saving throw (roll a d20), if you roll 10 or higher you save against the effect.

Ravinna, Human Bard

Ravinna had thought she was prepared for battle, but the sudden appearance of a beast-man who was barking orders distracted her just long enough that she didn't notice the tune that the harpy was singing. Was that in G Minor? No, wait...were those chords she was singing? And why is the harpy getting bigger?

By the time she realized she was supposed to be fighting, her legs had carried her right next to the blasted thing. She drew her songblade, hoping that it was up to the task at hand. "You like music? Here, see how you like this little ditty, bitch!" The songblade swung through the air, trailing a jaunty tune of mayhem as it did.

OK, let's see if I've got this:

Minor action: Declare the stupid harpy my Hunter's Quarry.
Minor action: Draw my sword.
Standard action: Attack with Guiding Strike, +14 vs. AC, 1d6+7 damage, +1d6 for Hunter's Quarry.

[roll0] to see if I hit. (EDIT: Whoops, that should be +14, for a total of 20)
[roll1] for damage if I did hit
[roll2] for saving throw against Immobilization.

If I hit, Guiding Strike will give it a -2 to its AC until the end of my next turn.

EDIT: I messed up the die roll for the attack, I put +7 and it should be +14, so that's not a 13, that's a 20.

Hit, harpy takes 15 damage and -2 to AC until end of your next turn.

Harpy is also marked by you via Hunter's Quarry.

Matrim spins his spear in a flurry of activity jabbing at two of his enemies. He then takes a step back and lets out a roar of fury, letting his opponents see and hear the promise of retribution he is making to them.

Minor: Kirre's Roar - Hy2 and Ha2 are marked until my EONT, and I gain resist 2 to all damage until my EONT

Your flurry strikes the Hyena but misses the Harpy by a small margin who ducks and screeches at you. Neither beast takes kindly to your challenge which infuriates them both.

Move Action - Shift to R2
Standard Action - Rage Drake's Frenzy

Kalek is dazzled by the tune, closing his eyes and listening to the melody. When he opens his eyes, he sees a horrid demon screaching in front of him. Without hesitation, Kalek pulls from his quiver a barbed arrow. "This is just for you, sweetcakes!" He yells mockingly at the Harpy. Kalek fires right at her heart, hoping to weaken it's prowess over himself and the lovely looking bard next to him.

Minor: Hunter's Quarry on Ha1

Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

The halfling watches as their enemies reveal themselves and attack just as fast in what seemed only mere seconds just as his attention is suddenly drawn to an alluring song which seems to promise everything. But Illyrion is not one tempted so easily, the arcane powers running through his veins like a song of its own promises much more than the harpy could ever give him. "Better have tried," he sneers at the beast-woman.

For a moment, the halfling sorcerer contemplates attacking the harpy just as the bridge is being hit with boulders. "They're trying to destroy the bridge," he exclaims, lifting a glowing staff in the direction of the dwarves as a multi-colored bolt of arcane light erupts from it, racing towards the one within the range of his spell. "I'll try to hinder them," he calls to Kalek and Ravinna in hopes they will keep the harpy off his back.

Standard Action: Chaos Bolt at Rock Dwarf (I9)

Primary Attack: Charisma vs. Will: [roll0]
Damage: [roll1] psychic damage.

...the new damage result is 21

Additionally, I'm going to roll in case the Primary Attack comes up as an even number. If this is the case, the secondary attack will go to the Rock Dwarf (H7)

Secondary Attack: Charisma vs. Will: [roll2]
Damage: [roll3] psychic damage

IF the Secondary Attack roll is an even number too, the next attack targets the Drow (F3)

"I'll try to hinder them," he calls to Kalek and Ravinna in hopes they will keep the harpy off his back.

"Yes, go! Dog-Boy and I can handle her," Ravinna yells. Turning to her sudden ally, she says in a lower voice, "Don't make me more of a liar than usual, Rover."

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Illyrion's bolt of arcane light connects with the rock dwarf's head and wreaks havoc on it's mind. Those experienced in battle will know that even though it has no external wounds it is still suffering greatly.

The first hyena turns it's focus from Goresh to Matrim, cackling fiendishly, only managing to put Matrim on edge. It lunges at Matrim and bites him, not managing to get through his thick armor, in the process it leaves itself open to attack from Goresh.

The drow shouts orders in elven down on the field as it fires an arrow at Goresh which grazes his thick armor.

<Press the attack! Don't give up!> he shouts, bolstering his allies. His cries egg one of the hyenas to throw a quick attack in, biting Goresh on the arm and leaving acid behind. Matrim takes the opening presented by the attack and strikes true, granting him further accuracy against the Hyena but causing acidic blood to spurt out and burn everyone nearby.

Meanwhile the merchant's son shakes off the effect of the harpy's song and shakes his dazed father. "Father! Shake it off, she's a beast not a woman!" he shouts in desperation, unable to get through.

Round 2

One of the hyenas tries to break through Matrim's defenses but is unable to make a scratch, snapping futiliy as Matrim wards it off.

Two of the Rock Dwarves continue to pelt the bridge with stones while the third, distracted by Illyrion, throws a group of rocks his way, hitting both Ravinna and him and making the area around them difficult to traverse in the process. He then dives into the earth like a mole.

The harpy near Ravinna continues to sing, attracting the merchant who still hasn't been able to free himself from her spell, she then screeches a horrible screech before beginning to take flight. Her screech is painful to the ears harming and dazing the merchant, his son and Kalek (Rover?) who are unable to weather the attack but is unable to fully harm them due to Kalek's attack earlier. Illyrion and Ravinna manage to resist.

The harpy across the bridge realises it's not going to be very effective against the flurry of spear work which is Matrim and tries to fly off, unaware that even the careful move it's taking leaves itself open to assault from the experienced warrior.

Ravinna/Kalek/Matrim/Illyrion/Goresh

Comments:

Just realised the first attack made on Matrim wasn't a crit (not sure why I thought it was). Adjusted the attack and damage accordingly.

Goresh gets a free OA on Hy1 because it could not shift out of the brush and had to move, Matrim can use combat superiority on Ha2 if he wishes.

As the harpy tries to fly away, Matrim's spear comes seemingly out of nowhere in an attempt to skewer the foul creature. He then begins an impressive display of footwork and movement. Although he ends up in the same spot he started, he gives the impression that he momentarily became a whirlwind.

Forgot, Hack and Hew granted Matrim 2 THP due to Invigorating

Combat Challenge attack (not Superiority, difference is MBA vs OA so no +Wis to hit and doesn't stop movement but I can make it when a marked enemy shifts) vs Ha2 [roll0]
[roll1] and shift to T-2 due to Mobile Challenge feat.

Minor: Enter Rain of Steel stance - any enemy that I can see that starts its turn adjacent to me takes 2d4 damage as long as I'm able to make OAs.
Standard: Footwork Lure vs Ha2, mark it
[roll2]
[roll3] and shift to S-2, sliding Ha2 to U-3 then T-2 and knocking it prone.
Move: If Footwork Lure missed, shift to S-2, otherwise unused.
AP: Come and Get It - Pull every enemy within Burst 3 adjacent to Matrim, then attack them all, marking all 3
[roll4]
[roll5]
[roll6] - add +2 for CA if Footwork Lure hit since Ha2 will be prone
[roll7]

For next turn, Matrim will use Combat Challenge versus either Hyena if it makes an attack that doesn't include him, and if neither does so he'll use it against Ha2 if it attempts to shift or makes an attack that doesn't include him.

Matrim --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You just hit the harpy as it begins to fly away and you pull it back in and knock it to the ground where you intended it to be in the whirlwind of spear activity. Your whirlwind of action keeps the enemies adjacent to you and you manage to jab one of the Hyenas in a significant way, only managing to harass the harpy and other hyena into paying attention to you.

Combat Challenge missed.

edit: Forgot the -4 the harpy took to defenses while flying. Updating to a hit.

Footwork Lure hits, adding +2d4 damage effect to all adjacent enemies to receive at the start of their turns.

Come and Get It hits Hy1 as expected.

All 3 marked. Temp HP taken into account now.

Ravinna swears furiously as the harpy's song keeps her rooted to the spot. She swings her sword at the beast again...but notices that the new dog-man does not have the same problem moving around. He does seem a little dazed though. "You look better at this fighting thing than the boy does," she says, then sings a few bars of Grandel's Resignation Dirge. The new guy's mind clears, while Peter's cloudens. Well, cloudens more. She feels a little bad about it, but hey, this way it will keep him out of trouble, right?

First, Guiding Strike on harpy again.

[roll0] to hit
[roll1] damage, and re-up the -2 to AC if I hit.

Then, as a Minor Action, use Ode to Sacrifice to transfer one effect that a save can end to myself or another ally. I'll move Kalek's Dazed condition to Peter, who will now save at +3 against it.

Then, I'll save on my own Immobilization:

Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You slash the fleeing harpy, taking advantage of her clumsy flight and your previous guiding strike bonus to land the blow.

Peter is momentarily dazed as you remove the condition from Kalek and transfer it to him through your magically influenced song. Kalek is able to think clearly now.

You find that you're still rooted on the spot though, your damned legs just don't want to respond.

Hit the harpy, guiding strike is reinstated. Also, good idea with the dazed thing.

He does seem a little dazed though. "You look better at this fighting thing than the boy does," she says,

"I have a few years of experience with this stuff," Kalek says, winking quickly at Ravinna, "Watch this."
He jumps, flipping backwards and firing an arrow in mid-air, then skids to a stop. Kalek knocks two more arrows, aiming them at the Harpy. "And Rover, cute." He smiles, although it looks quite goofy, as he has the head of a wolf.

Cursing the rock dwarf for hiding beneath the ground, Illyrion shifts his attention to the other one close to the drow. Walking over the ground after the rock dwarf's attack is difficult and forces the halfling to pay some more attention to where he is going but he quickly reaches the right position for his next attack.

He feels the chaotic energy pulse within his body as it shifts towards his staff, being unleashed as another bolt of arcane light. The bolt races with a silent but bone-chilling scream towards the rock dwarf.

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Goresh takes a swing at the Hyena when it presents an opening but is swatted away, forcing him to back off before he can connect the blow. He retaliates by slamming into the creature, forcing it back 10 feet and causing it to lose it's footing. In the melee he also manages to land a sizable blow against the second hyena as he shakes the acid off his armor.

Kalek performs a feat of acrobatics and puts some distance between himself and the Harpy, landing a decent shot before he knocks a few more arrows.

Illyrion stumbles over the rocky ground and gets another of the rock dwarves in range, blasting it with psychic energy, much in the same way he harmed the first.

The hyena stands up, bloody and hurt, but is pushed on by bloodlust and charges Goresh, attempting to push him onto the bridge. Possibly so if it collapses the dwarf will go with it. Goresh manages to hold his ground with Matrim assisting, who harrasses the beast with his spear but is unable to get a solid blow in.

Another arrow comes from the mountainside, striking Goresh in the side and staining his armor with blood. The Drow leader shouts out to the beasts <Kill the dwarf!> which encourages the hyena to take another futile snap at Goresh, missing him by a wide margin. Afterwards the drow dives into the bushes nearby to gain cover from retaliation.

Elric, the merchant, fails to overcome his ailments, while Peter retreats a bit of the way and dives behind some rocks for cover.

Round 3

The Hyena and Harpy surrounding Matrim try their best to assault the warrior with the Harpy standing to her feet first. However, the two beasts are unable to land a blow through Matrim's superior armor.

A single rock dwarf continues to pelt the bridge with stones and the bridge begins to creak and crack ominously. Parts of the bridge begin to fall off and tumble down the gap. Illyrion has managed to distract the other two rock dwarves, one revealing itself from underground, who begin to pelt the group with stones, landing some solid blows and gashing Elric's head open in the process. One of the rock dwarves dives under after his assault.

The harpy assaulting Ravinna takes to the sky (already flying), leaving itself open to attack. It's heading away from the path in hopes to lure Ravinna and Elric off the side of the cliff to their deaths.

Ravinna/Kalek/Matrim/Illyrion/Goresh

Comments:

I forgot Goresh was a dwarf so bull rush wouldn't work on him anyways. Not that the hyenas would know that so it was still attempted. I updated status accordingly and included Elric and Peter's HP values.

Ravinna, Human Bard

Ravinna is pleased to see the harpy turn tail and run...until she feels her feet following her off the edge of the bridge! Her blade won't do her much good as a weapon, but it can still channel her music. She beings singing, and magical force starts to pull the harpy back towards Kalek. She just hopes it will be enough...

Using Impelling Force on the harpy. +10 vs. Fort, 1d10+7 damage, and if successful, I can slide her up to 5 squares next to an ally (Kalek).

Matrim & Goresh --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

As Goresh backs away the hyena crashes to Matrim's feet, fading but still conscious enough to fight. Goresh follows up, making quick work of the beast and regaining vigor as it draws it's last breath.

First roll hit, elven accuracy not used. Goresh kills Hyena 1 and gains temp HP.

Both marks wear off on Hyena 2 and Harpy 2

Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You blast the harpy with the force of music sending it crashing to the ground nearby. It's not getting up after that.

His target in sight, Illyrion channels his arcane energy into his staff as yet another bolt erupts from it, flying straight at the rock dwarf closest to the halfling.

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Illyrion takes cover by a boulder and blasts the nearest dwarf with another beam of psychic energy, sending it reeling. Mud-like blood starts to drip from the orifices in it's head.

Kalek fires two shots up at the Drow he calls 'Pirrett', his aim cutting through the mild cover the drow has. He manages to land one in the Drow's shoulder while the other embeds itself in the mountainside.

"Wolf man doesn't give up!" Pirrett replies in broken common before sliding down the mountain side to a better vantage point. He retaliates in kind, striking Kalek with a well placed arrow before barking more orders to the assault on Matrim. The harpy claws out and grazes Matrim, causing minimal damage.

Peter prepares himself for anything while his father stumbles into cover and wakes himself up.

Round 4

The remaining Hyena approaches Goresh and attempts to break through his defenses but is unable. Meanwhile the three rock dwarves shower heavy stones upon Illyrion, only hitting Kalek and knocking him unconscious in the process, all the while ducking in and out of the ground like some demented game of whack-a-mole.

The remaining Harpy has begun to realise where the battle is heading and tries to put some distance between itself and Matrim after being swiped. Matrim trips it up though and lands a sturdy blow with his spear, spraying it's blood on the worn path and knocking it down next to the dead hyena. It manages to get back to it's feet though.

Ravinna/Kalek/Matrim/Illyrion/Goresh

Comments:

Realised Hy1 died in the wrong spot, updated that section of the map to be accurate.

Kalek took a lot of damage this round and is Dying. In order to revive he must either stabilize with a natural 20 on his turn which will let him spend his second wind for a healing surge immediately OR if someone uses the heal skill on him as a standard action (DC 15 I believe?) he'll also get to spend his second wind. In addition he can be fed a potion (standard action again I believe) OR finally, any healing power will also revive him, no check required. He will heal HP as if he was at 0HP. Kalek will die if he fails 3 saving throw rolls (less than 10) or takes a total of -26 damage.

I factored cover in for Illyrion so he's fine.

I took the OA for Matrim as Footwork Lure, feel free to move about where you like and then I'll take the Harpy's final action. If you wanted to use a different attack (or just a basic attack) that's fine too, we'll just use the rolls I took and adjust bonuses/effects as needed.

Ravinna feels her legs come back to life, and it couldn't have come at a better time, unless it had come, say, earlier. With all the time spent rooted to the ground, she seems to have saved up all of her energy. She avoids the difficult terrain and runs around to hide behind a boulder while she begins her music.

A soothing lullaby for the fallen dog-man: "Up, boy, up! You're the only one who seems to know what the hell is going on."

Then, she levels her songblade at the one dwarf she can see and hums a dismal sounding tune. Dark necrotic energy springs forth toward the dwarf.

Finally, she puts what she knows of the drow to use: "HEY! Pirret! Do you have a plan or something? Don't worry if you don't. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

OK, Action Point spent.

Move Action: Move west then north to P15, to get that cover bonus.

Minor Action: Majestic Word on Kalek. That will let him spend his healing surge and also heal an additional 1d6+5 hp, AND grant another 5 temporary hit points.
[roll0] <--this much healed extra.

Standard Action: Unluck on the only dwarf I can see. +10 vs. Reflex, 1d8+7 necrotic damage, and if it hits, it replaces one attack roll he makes before EOMNT with a new roll (which we can just assume I will use on anything he does that hits someone).
[roll1] attack vs. Reflex
[roll2] necrotic damage
Also, whether I hit or not, one ally can reroll one attack roll they make before the EOMNT; I choose Illyrion.

Action Point Standard Action: Vicious Mockery on the drow.
[roll3] vs. Will
[roll4] psychic damage, plus -2 to his attack rolls if I hit.

Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Your lullaby re-invigorates the dog-man as you dive for cover. The necrotic energy strikes the Dwarf and your magic pulls at the abstract strings of fortune for your new allies.

Pirrett, the drow the dog-man seems to be aquainted with, chuckles and brushes off your insult.

Don't have time to post a detailed response but it will be here when I do post it. Here's a summary of what worked/didn't.

You gain the cover bonus.

Kalek heals to 19 HP and regains consciousness and gains 5 temp HP. He is still prone obviously but no longer helpless.

Rock Dwarf is hit by the attack and takes some damage. You grant the re-roll chance to Illyrion.

Vicious Mockery misses the drow sadly :(

Kalek, after being knocked out by the crashing boulder, stands up. "Hey, you're pretty good at this thing too, Bard." Kalek shakes his head, getting the dizziness away. He then realized he was in a fight. Kalek reels around and lets out a furious roar! "Damn it, Pirrett! Today is the end! DIE!" Kalek starts shooting arrows at a furious rate, swearing as he shoots each one. For his last arrow in this barrage, Kalek imbues the shot with magical cold energy from Melora.

Move: Stand up

Minor: Hunter's Quarry on L5

Standard: Sure Shot on L5. If I don't like the damage result for Sure Shot, Ill re roll after the initial post so I know whether I want to or not.

Free Action: Frost Greatbow (Daily): The target takes an extra 1d8 cold damage and is slowed until the end of your next turn.
The Power must hit for the ability to be used.

Attack vs AC: [roll0]
If first misses: [roll1]

Kalek --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Your barrage of arrows showers Pirrett, striking him multiple times.

You described it as a barrage so I went with it.

Second roll hits, Pirrett takes 34 damage.

In addition, you can't mark Pirrett because he's not the closest enemy you can see. Rock Dwarf 2 takes that prize so I didn't include your quarry damage in the above calculations.

Finally, my apologies again, but you've already used a daily item power today so you can't trigger your bow's power as well unless you hit a milestone (typically, at the end of the second battle for the day). So I took that damage out too.

Still a great roll though.

"Wolf boy will die here!" Pirrett returns in broken common as he fires an arrow at Kalek who easily dodges the shot. He drops prone to gain better cover and yells out to his allies in elven <They're on the bridge! Take them out!> goading the harpy into attempting a strike towards Goresh.

"What's going on?! Watch out!" Elric shouts from cover as he and his son stay out of the way.

Round 5

The hyena takes a blow from Matrim's stance and spurts acidic blood over Matrim, Goresh and the Harpy, burning all three of them. It cackles fiendishly, putting Matrim on edge and snaps at his spear, determined to block his way off the bridge.

The three Rock Dwarves dive in and out of the mountain side and at their commander's orders, immediately begin to pelt the bridge with stones again. The bridge takes heavy damage, pieces splintering off and falling down the side of the mountain. It wobbles unsteadily and won't survive another round like that.

Matrim strikes the Harpy a final time and acid burns away at it's flesh as it screeches and dies on the bridge.

Goresh lets out a grunt as the harpy is impaled by Matrim. He growls at the remaining hyena, casually walking around to position himself better, letting the beast take a free swipe at him. He keeps his eyes locked on the hyena's eyes, staring it down before taking another swing with his deadly axe.

Bah, messed up the roll stuff. See below.

Goresh --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You navigate around the beast with Matrim's help in warding it's attack off. From behind it can't keep track of you accurately and you manage to strike a deep blow with your axe.

Acidic blood continues to burn away at your thick dwarven skin.

Save vs Acid (http://4e.orokos.com/roll/38022): 6, Failed

Matrim can also use Combat Challenge vs the Hyena. Since it's not a pressing thing which'll block others turns I'll let Rahl choose how he does it.

Opportunity attack missed, hit Hyena for 19 damage.

As the acid from the hyena's blood sprays on him, Matrim lets out a grunt of pain. He says, "If any of you know healing magic I am in need of some. We need to end this soon." With that he jabs his spear at the hyena and spins, using his spear as a lever to send the hyena flying onto the shaky bridge.

Matrim --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

In a frenzy of incredible spearwork and footwork you successfully strike the Hyena twice, making it off the bridge and knocking the beast prone in your place.

Combat Challenge hits Hyena for 12 damage. You shift to (S4)

You shift to (R3).

Footwork lure hits with Elven Accuracy roll for 11 damage.
Matrim shifts to (R2)
Hyena shifts to (R3,S3,R4,S4) and is knocked prone
Hyena's mark is renewed.

Save vs Acid (http://4e.orokos.com/roll/38030): 1d20 13 Saved.

Ravinna hears Matrim's need, but there's no way she can get there before these damn dwarves destroy the bridge, or kill one of them. The rickety bridge is just too damaged for her to run across. She needs to take care of them first.

She ducks out from behind the boulder and rushes up to the next one before belting out the highest, shrillest note she can muster. Her blade amplifies it like a tuning fork, creating a thunderous cacophony.

Sorry, Rahl, there's no way I can get to you with healing. I only have a range of 5 squares, and you're 13 squares of difficult terrain away.

Move Action: Move up to M13, so I still should be getting the cover bonus.

Standard Action: Shout of Triumph on both rock dwarves.
[roll0] vs. Fortitude
[roll1] thunder damage

If I hit, I push them 3 squares back.

Also, if I hit either one of them, I'll activate my Harsh Songblade power as a free action, dazing all those hit until the EOMNT.

Kalek Emris

Seeing the drow hit cover, Kalek decides not to take the chance of missing shots on his cowardice. He turns his attention to the two dwarf-like being pelting the bridge. "Take them out, or we wont be able to get across!" Kalek states quickly, pointing at the creatures.

Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You move closer and blast both rock dwarves with your note, their sturdy bodies ripple under the impact of the sound and absorb the force, leaving them unaffected.

Shout of Triumph vs Rock Dwarf 3 (http://4e.orokos.com/roll/38081): 1d20+10 20

Wow, go figure.

Moved to M13, still have cover as expected.

Unfortunately both attacks miss. Daily weapon power not used.

Kalek --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You fire upon the short rock dwarves, infusing your shots with cold energy but your arrows are harmlessly deflected off their tough skin and spin off into the mountain side, freezing a couple random patches of mud instead.

Hunter's Quarry on Gd1

More missing, ouch.

Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

While Illyrion can hear the elven's request, he can't really help him. He is no healer. Swiftly moving to get a better view of his enemies, the sorcerer unleashes another bolt of psychic light. The image of the bridge shattering under the dwarven's attacks make Illyrion channel more of his arcane power into his staff as a second blast erupts from it. They both race at the rock dwarves who keep attaching the bridge.

Hmmm...going to use an Action Point...

Move Action: Shift to P15

Standard Action: Chaos Bolt at Rock Dwarf (K11)

Primary Attack: Charisma vs. Will: [roll0]

Illyrion --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You launch bolts of psychic energy at the rock dwarves but each bolt is met with impressive resistance. The two creatures laugh at your attempts and prepare to take out the bridge.

Ouch, no hits on primary attacks, sorry.

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

Pirrett slides down the slope and leaps onto the bridge. He looks to each group of heroes and flashes a nasty smile.

"Good bye for now." he replies with an acidic tone to his voice like he has something up his sleeve. He proceeds to shout more orders in elven. <Kill them if they try to cross!> before throwing a sphere of some sort onto the ground which shatters and leaks a thick black cloud which obscures the drow from view.

Round 5

The hyena panicks, desperately scrambling to get off the bridge but is knocked back by Matrim in it's desperate attempt to get some stable footing. Matrim is merciful enough to end it's life before it has to endure the pain of the fall.

Rocks rain down on the bridge, careful to avoid the cloud of darkness, the bridge snaps loudly in several places and Pirrett can be heard laughing from cover. Then, all at once, the bridge falls through, plummeting down the mountain, taking Pirrett and the panicked hyena with it.

The final Rock Dwarf reveals itself from the ground, lifting a sizable boulder in a threatening matter, ready to strike. It laughs a cruel, guttoral laugh.

Ravinna/Kalek/Matrim/Illyrion/Goresh

Comments:

Matrim gets a free shift action if he wants to use it.

In addition, the bridge is out. Thankfully not with you on it.

edit: TO THOSE WITHIN RANGE OF THE ROCK DWARF.

You can make a bluff roll vs his insight or a stealth roll vs his perception to get your attack in before he retaliates.

I'll also accept any cunning plans although I don't guarantee they'll work, that's what rolling is for.

Goresh starts to swing at the hyena when the bridge collapses, causing it to fall off the ledge. Aggravated by the inability to finish his foe, he starts heading up the hill toward the rock dwarves, having paid scant attention to them up to this point.

Ravinna --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

You manage to spring into action before the dwarf can read your body language and launch your insult at it, shaking it's resolve. It retaliates a moment too late, stones ricocheting off your cover while you remain safe.

I moved you to the wrong place, my bad. Also, 28 bluff? The thing had no chance.

Vicious Mockery hits it for 9 damage. Gd2 takes -2 to attack rolls until EoNT (Ravinna)

Hurl Stones vs Ravinna AC (21) (http://4e.orokos.com/roll/38150): 22 - 2 = 20 MISS. (-2 penalty from Mockery taken into account, forgot your cover bonus though so I posted that in there which brought it down to a miss)

Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

If Illyrion were a dragon sorcerer, he'd be literally fuming like a volcano shortly before eruption. He finds it quite insulting, actually, that the dwarves were able to resist his attack. Maybe venting his frustration on the dwarf, who had just failed to hit Ravinna with his attack, would help him feel better. At least a little. Bringing up his Staff of Ruin, glowing already with the chaotic arcane light of his attack, he fires a Chaos Bolt at cause of his ire.

Standard Action: Chaos Bolt at Rock Dwarf (M17)

The rock dwarves burrow off in separate directions, emerging in different places. One emerges next to Goresh and stomps hard on the ground, sending a shockwave out from it's position. Goresh's dwarven build easily resists the attack.
The second emerges on a cliff above Illyrion in a location which gives it cover from ranged attack from below but allows it to bypass Illyrion's cover. It showers him with stones, striking a hefty blow.

Goresh lifts his axe high above his head, ready to bring it down on his foe when he hears the cries of surrender. Slowly, the rage dissipates from him. After a moment, he regains his senses about him. He blinks at the rock dwarf for a moment before growling. Aggrevated, he brings his axe down, burying it beside the dwarf, near his head. He reaches down, picking up his axe in one hand and the dwarf in another. Speaking in dwarven, he yells in the rock dwarf's face, "ye coward! Ye don't fight like a dwarf, the least ye could do is die like one! Bah!" He tosses the dwarf to the ground, disgusted.

Goresh turns to his companions and says in common, "this 'un here is surrenderin'." Glancing back at the dwarf, he mutters, "don't ye doin' none o' that burrowin'. It'll be ye grave."

"Amazing work, absolutely amazing!" Elric applauds as he and Peter come out of hiding, covered in mud. "I think I might need a short break before we continue though. Are we to cross over the slope?" he adds, checking his wounds as he re-joins the group.

Kalek seems to have wandered over to the broken bridge and is staring down the gap where it fell.

Short rest unless anyone objects (do so IC). Short rest allows you to regain use of all Encounter powers (including both charges of Ravinna's Majestic Word power). It also allows you to use healing surges freely to recover HP and Ravinna also has the song of rest she can use during this time.

He resists, knowing that they need to learn what this creature knows, even if it means keeping their word and letting him go free.

"Not amazing enough to save the bridge, I'm afraid," Ravinnaa answers. "And a short break sounds absolutely perfect." She swings her songblade and sticks it into the rocky ground, point-first, leaving it to hum a soothing series of ambient tones while they rest.

Song of Rest: Everyone, if you spent a healing surge, get an additional +5 hp per surge spent.

Sipex, that used HS was a typo, I haven't used any. But I'm using one now to heal 19 hp, bringing me to 52.

Ravinna notices the dog-man shaking their captive and immediately steps in. "Hey, Rover--I've got as many questions for you as for the dwarf," she snaps. "Who are you? Who is 'he'? Why did they attack the bridge? And if you knew they were going to attack, why didn't you warn us ahead of time?"

He lets go of the dwarf and steps back, adjusting the gear on his body. "Firstly," he said almost hesitantly, "I go by Kalek. As for the dwarf-creature, I am not quite sure." Kalek begins to shrink about 3 or 4 inches, his wolf-like features disappear, leaving him looking like an elf. And a charming looking one too, of course depending on who's looking. After he finishes, he winks at the Bard. "Now, I am not quite sure who these things are, or why they attacked THIS bridge. But I do know who the Drow is. And he has been my business for quite some time now, I wouldn't want to get you involved." He scratches his head, "As for the warning, I needed to time it well so you wouldn't attack me, and so the Drow wouldn't escape- of course I failed in that." Kalek brushes the silver-blonde hair from his face and looks at the elf fighter, "As for your question, you're welcome. And brigands they might be, but more like dispensable mercenaries. The Drow uses anyone and anything like a tool.

Ravinna calms down once the shapechanger begins answering her questions. She had expected him to resist, but she was willing to give him a chance now that he was showing a little respect.

"I'm Ravinna, this is Matrim, Goresh, and Illyrion," offers Ravinna, pointing to each in turn. "The two back there are Elric and his son, Peter. We're going to Brixham to see Elric's wife, who is due with their second child any day now. "So, master wolf...Kalek." Elric starts after being secured for the crossing. "While I didn't hire you for our crossing you came to aid us, nevertheless. Even if it was for personal reasons I'd like to see if I can reward you and maybe you can catch some rest in town. We're only about an hour away now, what do you say?"

Ravinna searches the bodies on this side of the crossing and finds nothing of value on them, all of them being beasts. She does, however, find a small vial wedged between a couple of rocks right at the edge of the cliff and is able to reach it without putting herself at risk. The drow must've dropped it when he slid down to the bridge.

She regonises it as residuum, a golden powder which is said to be crystalised magic. It can be used to cast rituals but is also widely accepted as money. There's about a gram of the stuff in there but that's easily worth around 1000 gold.

Of course, this is copper compared to the reward which would await the party in Brixham.

Once she returns to the group, Elric asks "Are we ready to go?"

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham]

After the group is roped together (for safety) you all make the crossing along the cliffs to get around the large gap where the bridge used to be. The mud makes things a bit difficult but the group's overall experience and skill allows you to make the crossing without any hangups.

The sun begins to set as you walk the final stretch of your journey up the mountain pass, Elric is becoming increasingly worried and Peter seems to be intimidated by Kalek's arrival.

"Not far now, we should be able to see the town in a minute." Elric pipes in as you reach the home stretch.

Here the ground evens out and heads forward about 40 feet before running into a rocky wall with the gates to a town, you assume Brixham, on top about 60 feet up.

It looks like the town had built wooden ramps to allow carts and travellers to ascend up the wall without the need to climb. Unfortunately the ramps have been destroyed, leaving splintered wood littering the area. Several large boulders litter the area too along with a myriad of smaller ones.

Elric looks to be in a mild state of shock, unsure what to say.

While not everyone said they were formally ready to go it sounds like you all are. If I'm wrong, intervene somehow like:
"Wait! I need to do X" said the adventurer who I ninjaed.

Handing his spear off Matrim lands with a squelch, burying his ankles in soft mud. It takes a moment for him to get them free but it's no worry for someone of his experience.

Beside Matrim, Goresh jumps in, slipping and landing on his back, the mud absorbing the force of the fall.

Matrim's spear is tossed down and he uses his keen elven sight to have a look around.

Matrim & Goresh Perception:

You see no sign of spiders but instead a tunnel-like cave which leads deep into the mountain. It gets dark pretty quickly so you'll probably need additional light sources.

You also notice a good variety of assorted left over bones scattered randomly. no full skeletons though nor anything of signifance which would indicate what species the bones are from.

Matrim Only Perception:

Your eyes can see some distance into the cave and you note how there are many smaller tunnels (from the size of your hand to something large enough for you to crawl into) branching off the main tunnel in many different ways.

Kalek leaps in and lands on the soft mud with Ravinna following soon after. She ends up landing on her hands and knees but finds that the mud reduces the harshness of the fall.

Elric and Peter follow shortly after, leaving only Illyrion up top by himself.

"Things get a bit windey from what I'm told." Elric explains, not bothering to wipe off the excess mud from his clothes. "But as long as we avoid caverns marked with daggers we should be fine. One of the exploration groups had the courtesy of doing that for us at the very least."

Ravinna & Kalek Perception
You can't see far off into the caves due to your restricted vision (no low light vision for Ravinna) but you do see the little tunnels Matrim mentioned. They're everywhere, lining the walls, floor and ceiling like little highways. Some are large enough that you could squeeze into them while others are barely large enough to put your hand in.

You also notice a variety of spare bones scattered all around, but nothing more than leftovers and no sign of what species the bones belonged to. Probably the odd unlucky animal who's wandered this way.

Neither of you see any sign of spiders.

Ravinna only.
You smell the faintest trace of baking bread coming from the cave, like the sort of trace you'd find when the breeze catches a fresh loaf just right and carries it across the city.

When Matrim lights his sunrod you notice a large spider scuttle out of sight far down the tunnel as you just happened to be looking at just the right time. This one is about the size of a medium dog.

Matrim lights up his sun rod which floods the tunnel letting you see deep inside. The light is surreal and makes this place seem less daunting.

It's not long before you come to an obvious fork in the path with one tunnel leading straight and another leading off to the right. The straight tunnel has a dagger embedded in the wall by the fork.

"That's what they must've meant." Elric pipes in, seeing the dagger. "The dangerous paths are marked by daggers."

Kalek Nature
Your feel for the caves lets you know that this is a large system of tunnels, all connecting in a tangled pattern. Most of these tunnels are too small for you to worry about though.

You also know that a lot of different plant life lives down here, like sprigs of deep grass which make good spices for stew and shadow moss which looks like normal moss except that it has some discerning feature you can never remember.

Matrim/Kalek/Ravinna Perception
You begin to notice small webs in some of the crevaces which, when hit by light, seem to look red.

Ravinna Perception
You notice the smell of baking bread again, although this time it's hard to pin the source.

Using your experience and intuition you search the other wall and reveal an old dagger mark underneath a patch of moss.

"Clever thinking" Elric replies as you show the group your discovery. "Dwarven intuition I take it?"

Your modifier is +4, not +5. Otherwise, it's still enough to see the dagger mark.

"Actually," Ravinna says, looking thoughtfully, "Future travelers will look at the other tunnel and see the mark from where it is now, and conclude that someone must have moved it to fool them. So they'll go down the right path, thinking that they need to go the opposite way of the dagger." She pauses. "Of course, they may have someone with them who thinks of that, like I just did, and concludes that someone may have already moved the dagger back to its original position. But then, they may think that future travelers in the further future might think of that, and move it back to keep them from thinking that the previous future travelers had moved it, when in fact it had been the past travelers that moved it after the previous past travelers."

She looks at her companions. "What?"

This is bloodweb, made by Bloodweb Spiders (the little black ones I mentioned). It's sticky and enough of it can actually affect the movement of a full sized human but in this quantity it's not enough.

"Peter, plug up that fake mark with some mud." Elric asks as the mark is scratched out and the dagger is moved to the side cave. Peter complies and plugs it up with some mud he's easily able to scoop off his clothes.

After everything is reset the party moves forward down the tunnel believed to the the right route.

Everyone starts to see the 'red tinted webbing' Matrim mentioned earlier as it's now lining some of the walls and in several crevaces. Side tunnels have started to grow in size, with some large enough to walk into if you're bent double. Plants remain sparse although the moss seems to get thicker the further you go.

You all pass a longsword which has been embedded into the rock. Next to it are the following words carved into the stone.

In memory of our friend Harrow who sacrificed himself as a meal to the hell spoken spider queen to save our hides. May his daggers prevent you from meeting the same fate.

Kalek Perception
Now that you've seen one Bloodweb Spider you start seeing more, scurring from webs and into small cracks as the light touches them.

You also catch a glimpse of long...sharp...spider legs dissapearing down a larger hole in one of the walls as Matrim's light approaches. It almost looks like the spider had blades for legs. It's easily as large as a big dog, maybe bigger.

Ravinna Perception
You start to pay attention behind the group after catching a glimpse of a much larger spider, near the size of the one you had mentioned seeing caged up. It keeps it's distance though, staying out of the torchlight and slinking back into cover after a moment.

Before it dissapears you notice it has fine legs, pointed, although it's hard for you to make out with the limited exposure.

The tunnel starts branching off itself only to loop back onto the main feed and eventually opens up into a small cavern which Matrim's light floods quickly. You all hear the gentle tap of legs scurrying from the light. The walls are covered with webbing and more holes. From here you can see three obvious paths branching off the far side of the cavern, none which seem marked.

Matrim leads the group through the small cavern, you can hear small legs scurrying around inside the cave walls.

In a flash the floor below Matrim cracks sharply and falls away causing the elf to plummet down before he can react. He falls a good 20 feet, landing hard in a small crevace which is covered in red webbing, soon being swarmed by little black spiders who bite him all over his body, getting underneath his armor. He quickly begins to bleed as the spiders swarm him.

As if waiting for a signal the walls erupt with squeals. A giant spider with blade-like legs approaches from the rear of the group and charges Ravinna, striking the wall as she deftly evades.

Several terrier sized spiders leap from the walls at the party, one landing on Peter and another landing on Kalek.

Comments:

Sorry about the battle spam guys, I rolled init and grouped the monster init (in an attempt to make those of you who get higher init a better chance) and rolled really well for both sides so monsters won :(.

Also, I'm really sorry Rahl, I just played it out how it would honestly play out. Bad luck there. For those of you concerned, Matrim is 20 feet down which is 4 squares if you're standing next to the hole. If you choose to jump into the hole and are trained in acrobatics you may reduce falling damage by making an acrobatics check. If you reduce the damage to 0 you land on your feet, otherwise you land prone. To reduce falling damage take your total damage (roll 2d10) and your acrobatics check. Divide the acrobatics check by 2 and reduce the damage by that amount.

edit: Forgot to mention landing spots. If you jump down the landing area is (E4/F4/E5/F5), 4 squares identical to the pit. As you might guess, jumping down a certain square lands you at a certain spot.

Also, if anyone is wondering where the massive damage is coming from, this is officially the first battle where I restatted the monsters to not be bags of hitpoints. 33% less health, 33% more damage.

Excel sheet will go up tonight.
