I remember this way to "save the game" that someone taught me that involved an amulet that recorded your memories. Does anyone know what the item is called?

Sounds like the Thought Bottle from Complete Arcane. Can be used to store thoughts, memories, or prepared spells. Most importantly, however, it can also be used to restore your XP total to whatever it was the last time you used the bottle. Needless to say, people have found all kinds of ways to exploit that last function, generally involving paying XP for things and then using the bottle to regain the XP. On a less gamebreaking note, you can also use it to do things like, say, spend the night with a succubus and regain all of your lost levels in the morning.:smallbiggrin:
