Races

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the first of Halna's Homebrew Compendium's (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187561) Voting thread! This week, we'll be doing Races, the building blocks of characters. This is not a homebrew contest in the traditional sense- races aren't being made for this thread, rather races from other homebrews-whether they be individual or inside of other projects- and then, the Playground votes! In one week from now, on Sunday, March 6th, at 3pm EST (GMT-5) this thread closes, and no more votes are allowed.

Each person has three votes. You may split up your votes, or keep them together.
This week was the first nomination week, so it was kind of slow, so, lucky for you, choices are limited!
There are two kinds of awards given out at HHC- "Best Homebrew of the Week" award, which is awarded to first, second, and third place winners, and is given out to the 'brews with the most votes. The other award is the "Judge's Panel Pick" which is given out to the most balanced and playable of the homebrews.
If you wish, you can give justifications as to your choices, but it's not necessary.

And, now, ladies and gentlemen, your contestants!

Oh, joy!

I'm voting for...

Glöi. It is by far the most interesting and unique race I have ever seen.

Tawaki. As you put it, "Penguin People. What more do you need?"

The last one, it was a tough pick between the Charcharodons and the Virtues. The Charcharodons are really cool and have a lot of awesome things to go along with them. Personally, however, I think Jarrick's work (as always) is interesting, balanced, and fun to use, so I'll have to vote for the Virtues.

The Kilzecru are pretty awesome, as well... I don't think I'll change my votes, though.

It'll take me a bit to read through all of these. Is there any special procedure for Judges voting?

Edit: I guess not? So I'll pick three as well.

Tawaki - Pirate Penguins. And balanced races without a LA are always nice. And we could use more semi-aquatic races.

Children of Fharlanghn - Good Nomadic race, a gap which I've noticed in the standard races. The -4 in Cha helps make up for its various bonuses. I especially like the Waking Sleep ability. I can certainly see that being useful. And hilarious when someone tries to ambush the "Sleeping nomads"

And last but not least...

Glöi - A balanced and certainly unique class. The LA balances out the ability pretty evenly, in conjunction with them being somewhat circumstantial.

So... yeah.

2 votes for Gloi, 1 for Virtues.

Gloi are a really interesting and flavourful race.

Virtues are very well done, and I think we need more angelic races.

Carcharodons are complely overpowered for 0 LA;
+2 STR, +2 WIS for -2 DEX, -2 CHA, Monstrous Humanoid type, swim speed, darkvision, indefinite water breathing, a d8 natural weapon and 2 good favoured classes.

I don't think you can vote for a race twice, but I'll let Halna decide that.

Yeah, you can. I believe that was part of the rules. If not, I'll put it up. One of the reasons I gave out three votes.

Call it arrogance if you want, but I'm going to cast all of my votes for the Tawaki.

I really wanted to like the other entries, and I HAD a thorough review for each of them ready, but my computer ate it. Overall, I found that either the mechanics or the fluff let them down.
Gloi has awesome fluff, but it's way too weak for LA +1. Plus, I think abberation would be much, much more appropriate than monstrous humanoid.
Oaves are quite complete, and clearly involved quite a bit of work. However, even ignoring the page and a half of unnecessary spacing, I found them to be much, much too weak for LA +2, possibly even LA+1, and I thought the stat mods weren't impressive enough to fit the fluff described.
I like the golmoids, there's nothing really wrong with them, but it seemed like neither fluff or mechanics really did anything novel or unique.

It may be too late for the contest, but any suggestions are welcome. :smallwink:
