I will be playing in a mid-low optimization game, but I rather dislike most of the tier 3-4 classes. So, what I would like to do is build a Wizard that dabbles in many roles rather than specializing. I would like to be a gish that can function as a Batman-lite. I will post my spell list any I would greatly apreicate any siggestions, I will put in bold the spells I definately want to keep. This is the character. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10218734&postcount=39) The only difference is that I have exchanged 2 levels of Warblade for 2 levels of JPM, getting me a CL of 17 rather than 16.

I am a Focused Specialist Transmuter banning Evocation, Echantment, and Necromancy.

LEVEL 1 18 Int+2 Racial = 20 Int = 5 bonus level 1 spells.

Ectoplasmic Armor: Gain armor bonus against incorporeal touch attacks.
Enlarge Person: Humanoid creature doubles in size.
Feather Fall: Objects or creatures fall slowly.
Fist of Stone: Gain +6 Str and natural slam attack.
Nerveskitter: Subject gains +5 bonus on initiative checks.
Shield: Invisible disc gives +4 to AC, blocks magic missiles.
Silent Image: Creates minor illusion of your design.
True Strike: +20 on your next attack roll.
Expeditious Retreat, Swift: Your speed increases by 30 ft. for 1 round.
Protection from Evil: +2 to AC and saves, counter mind control

LEVEL 2

Mirror Image: Creates decoy duplicates of you (1d4 +1 per three levels, max 8).
Wraithstrike: Your melee attacks strike as touch attacks for 1 round.
Alter Self: Assume form of a similar creature.
Web: Fills 20-ft.-radius spread with sticky spiderwebs.

LEVEL 3

Displacement: Attacks miss subject 50%.
Haste: One creature/level moves faster, +1 on attack rolls, AC, and Reflex saves.
Dispel Magic: Cancels magical spells and effects.
Protection from Energy: Absorb 12 points/level of damage from one kind of energy.

LEVEL 4

Evard’s Black Tentacles: Tentacles grapple all within 15 ft. spread.
Polymorph: Gives one willing subject a new form.
Mirror Image, Greater: As mirror image, but gain an additional image each round.
Solid Fog: Blocks vision and slows movement.

LEVEL 5

Draconic Polymorph: You change into a dragon’s form.
Teleport: Instantly transports you as far as 100 miles/level.
Break Enchantment: Frees subjects from enchantment/alteration/curses/petrification.
Summon Monster IV: Calls extraplanar creature to fight for you.

LEVEL 6

Brilliant Blade: Weapon or projectiles shed light, ignore armor.
Resistance, Superior: Subject gains +6 on saving throws.
Acid Fog: Fog deals acid damage.
Summon Monster VI: Calls extraplanar creature to fight for you.

LEVEL 7

Elemental Body: You take on the qualities of a type of elemental.
Summon Monster VII: Calls extraplanar creature to fight for you.
Spell Turning: Reflect 1d4+6 spell levels back at caster.
Teleport, Greater: As teleport, but no range limit and no off-target arrival.

LEVEL 8

Maze: Traps subject in extradimensional maze.
Polymorph Any Object: Changes any subject into anything else.
Mind Blank: Subject is immune to mental/emotional magic and scrying.
Summon Monster VIII: Calls extraplanar creature to fight for you.

LEVEL 9

Shapechange: Transforms you into any creature, and change forms once per round.
Time Stop: You act freely for 1d4+1 rounds.

I will also be using (Greater) Luminous Armor. From what I read, I can prepare it without actually choosing to learn ir or scribe it into my spellbook. Is this correct?

I would also like to receive some clarification of Polymorph+Buff Spells. Specifically Elemental Body; it doesn't actually transform me, but it grants me bonuses and immunities. Do I keep these while polymorphed?

Doesn't anyone have any advice?

Specifically I would like some suggestions for things that work better than Summon Monster.

I suggest you keep the Summon Monster ones, they provide a great deal of utility as you decide which monster to summon, when you cast the spell, need a grappler? summon a fiendish snake, need some BFC? summon an Ice devil. Versatility is the key for a batman wizard.

Also I see a distinct lack of movement spells, dimension door, benign transposition, and Dimension Jumper (CMag) are quite good.

Perhaps some damage dealing spells would also be a good option, Orb of fire/force or sound for single damage (even without metamagic shenanigans they are quite good).

We ahve another guy that tends to like summonings, so I didn't want to encroach on his territory. But I didn't see anything else better.

Dimension Door and Benign Transposition are probobly good options. I'll probobly drop Expeditious Retreat for Transposition, but I can't rely on finding all the scrolls I need at Magic Wal-Mart. Which 4th level spell would you recommend I exchange for D Door?

What advantage does Brilliant Blade give over wraithstrike aside from the ability to cast it on someone other than yourself?

I would drop tentacles for DD. Might also consider wall of stone/force for 5th level. Force is short duration, but impenetrable. Stone is permanent, but breakable. Strong creatures will be through it in a few rounds.

hmmm all 4th level spells are solid choices... I would loose Black tentacles; but that due personal lissues and my lack of intention to use the grapple rules. But I think you could loose eithe Black tentacles or solid fog without much troubles.

Tentacles seems like the best choice to replace with DDoor. My character is technically Good-aligned (a rare change for me) and I guess those don't really fit.

I Brilliant Blade is round/level duration, so it will allow me to cast it at the beginning of combat then use my swifts for other things. Although I suppose that since I can persist Wraithstrike as a 7th level spell with Metamagic School Focus I can probobly ditch it.

You figured out the bonus spells wrong. See: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#abilityModifiers

Your level 5+ spells need more things that affect multiple targets. Barriers, area/multi debuffs, etc. Summon monster tends to be weak, so I wouldn't get anything outside of summon monster I for fodder unless you have some specific plans for certain monsters and/or summoning optimization. At higher levels you're going to need alternate low level spells. You can't possibly cast 32 spells in combat most days, so the lower level spells should be dedicated to all day buffs or immediate / swift action spells. i.e., the level 2 spells you cast at level 4 are very different from the ones you cast at level 14.

As this is a common question you can google "spell list" for more option, possible including "site:www.giantitp.com" or "D&D" in the search terms. But IMO you should pick your favorite spells, whatever they may be, and have fun with them. As long as they're decent spells, and most of yours are, it should work out fine. Just address the multi-target / buff concerns and you're good to go.

Well, Wizards get an additional 1st level spell in their spellbook at level 1 for each point of Int Mod. I didn't mean that I get extra spells/day.

That's good advice.

As for not being able to cast as many spells in combat, I do have Arcane Strike to eat the excess.
