View Full Version : Let's Play Worms Reloaded: Steam Thread Blood Bowl!

The Linker
2011-03-03, 10:42 AM
Eight teams of four worms have been named after Steam Thread denizens. What better way to foster a sense of competition than to watch your fellow GitPers engage in bloody, senseless battle?

The catch? Every worm is CPU-controlled. You can only watch, and hope your wormavatar makes you proud. :smallamused:

I'm limiting it to eight teams (which are all set already), at least for the moment. Who knows what'll happen in the future!

If you're here for the first time, I suggest Round 12 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hve1k-B3jKU) first, just to get you started.

Much thanks to:
Volatar, for learnin' me how to record and compress properly.
Skuzzball, for learnin' me how to record the talkin' properly.

I am filled with RAAAAAAEG. I got Skype Screen-Share to show Worms. Buuuuut then my computer started freezing up for a few seconds every ten seconds or so. Too much going on? I couldn't find any processes to close to free up memory...

Much credit goes to Fawkes for putting up with all this testing. It's a shame, too, those were some damn fine team introductions.

Edit: I believe the issue may have been that I had the resolution at 640 x 480 instead of the lowest, 600 x 400. Apparently that makes all the difference; I just recorded a match, and framerate issues plague it until I get the resolution down (at which point they still take a while to fizzle out.)

Best match ever, though.

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GV3cu7ZtuA) of Round 3 is up. Honestly, it's rather embarrassing by this point. I woulda thought by the fourth attempt at a video I'd have gotten it all straightened out. :smallfrown:

I hope you'll watch it through, though, despite the unpleasant bouts of 1 FPS. When I get Part 2 up, the finale is awesome. Though I may be biased.

An FYI, you spelled my name wrong in the list and game.
It's alright if you can't say it. Nobody can. Even I can't.

"Did I put the wrong teams? ... I did. I am so professional!"

Can't wait for further installments.

Edit: Oh god I just noticed the third video.
I enjoy the fact that I sadistically killed drager0. There's no kill like overkill.
Blackfox danced like a fairy when she killed Alterform. A bit of awesomeness there.
Dr. Girlfriend resurrecting Drolkcal does not surprise me in the slightest. Atheist God using a super bunker buster on Drolkcal immediately after also does not surprise me.
Imposter killing me with a suicidal dynamite strike? I can accept that. MANLY COMBAT.
I even bombed myself! Suicidal tactics are my forte. Have you seen me with a ullapool caber?

OH GOD FERRETS

BlackFox's victory dance reminds me of Kirby.

Atheist God does not need to attack people. He has minions for that.

Hmm! This is true.

Wouldn't have to run as many programs, and then I just have to layer the audio from the second clip onto the video from the first... Jibar, you mad genius.

I wonder if I can configure Fraps to just record the sound?

The only fault I can find is that I wouldn't get to manipulate the camera, but it's still worth a shot.

Mute your microphone before you start recording, or, even better, disable the recording of it in the Fraps settings so its only recording Windows' sound.

Oh, well, I meant for the second part, where Fawkes/Jibar/Dis/whoever and I observe the recording, and I of course have to record our audio. I don't have the space on my computer to record footage of the same 15-minute Worms match twice. :smalltongue:

Im pretty sure there is software out there that just records audio by itself, so that shouldn't be much of an issue. (Can't even windows itself do that in some versions?)
You just need to figure out how to splice it back together afterwards. (Virtualdub?)

It also allows for louder commentary... right now it's impossible to understand you in ep3. >_>

You'll be able to spectate and cheer your guy on as it happens! It'll probably be at like 6 or something. I'll update with more specifics as the date closes in.

And as a side note, I'll also be streaming a movie night right after; Twilight: New Moon w/ Rifftrax. There will be blood, and then there will be... more blood.

Unfortunately it's rather congested right now. I'd rather not go over eight teams, at least not right now -- it fits neatly in an amount that two games can encompass, any more would sort of throw things off. :smallfrown:

How big are the video files which you share?
Could be easier just to upload it, get on Skype, then press start on the video at the same time.
I actually watched a GTA IV LP on the Penny Arcade forums which did this and it took me 20 episodes to realise they weren't doing it live.

I can't help but go "Just as planned!" while laughing evilly and doing a thing with my fingers in the first few minutes. I was especially happy when I was the only one who showed any competence at all in the round. Except for moving into clearly visible terrain. Honestly, who does that?

Tarbrush really really hates kpenguin.

I was quite amused to see that airstrikes follow Halo physics, wherein a rocket can be deflected by another explosion. More games should do that. It makes rocket baseball something fun, and possible.

Can I call commentating on a round if I'm available?

You should see it when someone tries to airstrike an active deflecting electromagnet. All five missiles spread out and fly off like a peacock's feathers.

Which makes me sad that these worms don't use their awesome electromagnets, you know? If I could get into the code, understand it, and replace every instance of 'this is a good time to skip my turn!' with 'this is a good time to place a random electromagnet!', I would.

We're close to tournament time, though. Just a few more after 11 and everyone should have had at least three games against everyone else.

I plan for this to be a strict elimination-style tournament. If a worm dies, he dies. If Jibar dies and Linker dies, but Blackfox and Athiest God defeat the Bloggers, Blackfox and Athiest God will, all alone, go up against whoever emerged from the bloody Doktors-Chiapets fight. Quality is poorish, yeah. The good news is, I have a swanky 500 gb external hard drive now, so I will no longer be deleting any raw footage until the video is firmly on the Youtubes! Oh, and it seemed to let Fraps record my latest Audiosurf run without even a hiccup. My framerate issues may be phasing out.

If you were getting hiccups before when recording on your almost full hard drive it was probably because of all the fragmentation required to fit it on the gaps.

Nice work, Fluff. :smallcool:

Now that we've reached a milestone, I'd love to hear some feedback. What worked? What didn't? Survey time!

1) How do the solo rounds -- where it's just me talking -- compare to the duo rounds -- where it's me and a co-commentator?
a) Kinda boring. Prefer duos.
b) They're about the same. The current solo-vid-to-duo-vid ratio is fine.
c) They're not bad. You should do more! But some duo vids should still be present.
d) I kinda like solos better, actually.
e) Uh, depends who the other person is in the duo.

2) How do you feel about the pre- and post-game chatter when it's a duo-commentator round?
a) It's kind of too long. I'd like if you spent just a bit more time on Worms than talking.
b) It's fine. It's lighthearted and sets the mood!
c) You should talk more, really. It's always kind of amusing.
d) Just put in a marker that says "Skip to 5:34 for Worms," and I'll be happy.
e) Just put something else up other than the dang opening/closing frame and I'll be happy.

3) Which landscapes have you seen as more fun? (Pick all that apply!)
a) Anything in a cave. Airstrikes are boring anyways.
b) Islands and open skies! Love 'em!
c) I like islands, but not when they're small or thin. Too many water deaths sucks.
d) I like it when the worms are tightly packed and everything kind of explodes.
e) I like it when the worms are spread out and the tension rises.

4) Any weapons or otherwise you're tired of seeing? Poison strikes, teleports, super bunker buster bombs?

5) What was your favorite moment?

6) Any other sort of feedback is also welcome. Annnything you can think of, stuff that's been bugging you, or things you'd like to see more of.

I'd also like to ask which commentators you liked and disliked, but it might be awkward to say in a post in front of them; I'm always up for a steam message or a PM.

1: d, 2: b 3: other. As long as you keep changing the lands, anything is fine. 4: Reduce the number of teleports, grenades and petrol bombs. Basically everything that they use a lot.

Everything is pretty good though.

I'd be tempted to remove absolutely everything except.. oh, petrol bombs and jetpacks. Because the worms are demonstrably terrible with both, but not quite as predictably so as they are with bazookas. Just for one round, you know.

Edit: Or maybe only animal-based weaponry.

B, B, C/E. (Phase is awesome)

I would be in favour of limiting the spammy things, but I'm afraid that'd just lead to a lot more skipped turns. Stupid AI. :smallmad:
Maybe you could set up a game with a quirker weapon load and try it just to see how the AI behaves? No need to fraps and upload it, of course.

Also, I'll chime in with saying the banana bombs (and holy handgrenades) in 15 were all great moments.

The Linker
2011-03-25, 02:31 PM
Well, I have lots of ideas where I'm not sure how they'd work -- I figure I'd record 'em, and decide after the fact if it's funny enough to upload. Maybe I'll make a video later with a collection of failed weapon sets.

Case in point: a game where the AI has one of every weapon may just last half a turn, if everyone uses Armageddon. :smalleek:

factotum
2011-03-25, 03:12 PM
1. B
2. A--don't mind a couple of minutes of pre-game chatter, but when it gets into the 4-5 minute range I think it's too much.
3. C. Since water deaths are always a one-hit kill it makes the games too fast and dull if there are lots of them, which there always is on tall thin maps.
4. No, weaponry is fine--there seems to be a good ratio between weapons the worms can use and weapons they can't!
5. The worm who got stuck in the skipping animation a few rounds back.

As for commentators, I didn't dislike any of them, but I think Phase's second commentary (where he was basically doing a skit on wrestling commentary) was by far the best one.

Shoot. I just realized half of the teams have had eight games -- the other half has had seven. I can't in good conscience let a such a misbalance occur when it would be so simple to just let those four teams fight out another game. :smalleek:

Only two things are irremovable: Skip Rope, and Surrender. The latter hasn't been abused yet, of course, as amusing as it would make the end of a match. Maybe when we do that match where they have nothing but what comes out of crates. :smalltongue:

Round 16 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAWgIVEVuQU) is up!

I bumped the resolution up in the conversion from compressed AVI to DivX video -- it's at 1024 x 768 or something. Don't think it was worth it, especially since, well, the compressed AVI was as 720 x whatever -- letting the DivX output be larger doesn't really make it prettier. And I had an hour and a half upload time this way. Probably won't be doing that again. :smallcool:

What you think of the weapon set? Thinking of bumping grenades down to one, though bazookas would remain at two. A nicely-aimed bazooka is always kind of spectacular. And the, um, the game-winner? A keeper?

Exhibition Results

If a win is 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0...

Links: 4 points
Bloggers: 7 points
Doktors: 8 points
Chiapets: 8 points
Soulless: 12 points
Ragemakers: 2 points
Butt Ponies: 5 points
Bandwagon: 6 points

Which means:

First place: The Soulless
Second place: The Doktors*
Third place: The Chiapets
Fourth place: The Bloggers
Fifth place: The Bandwagon
Sixth place: The Butt Ponies
Seventh place: The Links
Eighth place: The Ragemakers

And therefore:

Tournament Round 1: Soulless V Doktors
Tournament Round 2: Chiapets V Bloggers
Tournament Round 3: Bandwagon V Butt Ponies
Tournament Round 4: Links V Ragemakers

And semifinals and finals after that.

IT'S GAME TIME.

I'm having difficulties getting a good fight out of these worms for the tournament.

I give them concrete donkeys and poison strikes, they never move and the game ends really fast.

I take those away, and they skip half their turns. :smallconfused:

I tried turning their difficulty to hard. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kod8Jhs_25g) happened.

I think I'm going with the second option. Just remember that the competition is in which team mans up enough to start actually fighting.

I'd definitely take out the donkey for the tournament. It's just too... Executiony. Perhaps they'd behave better if they got a one or two more bazookas (yeah, right), grenades and teleports? I don't think them moving around a lot is necessarily a bad thing as such. Even if they go after crates first, at least they seem to mostly end up trying to fight each other through teleporting. Beyond that, round 16 was quite entertaining, especially with early Lightning Strikes keeping the game going.

Speaking of round 16, the banana bomb execution of you... r worm self was stone cold. Wow. :smalleek:

I think having such severe limits on long-range weapons like Bazookas is having a bad effect on the Fort game--that's why all the worms kept skipping turns toward the end there, they didn't have any weapons they could use!

It recently occurred to me that it might make a better show to take ALL the worms that survived their corresponding prelim rounds and pit 'em against each other, team battle royale style. But then it wouldn't be fort style (you can do that with more than two teams, but team #3 would be allied with team #1 etc.), and I couldn't guarantee any sort of fair worm distribution. Hmmm.

I like how with every round, the co-commentator's team won, but their worm did not survive.

How does that bode for the Links V Ragemakers game? :smallconfused: :smalleek:

Mhm... i could get behind that idea.

(What format should these .bmp be in? People may be able to upload some things if need be.)

Well... the resolution to aim for would be around 2500 x 1500, as that's just below the maximum. If you encode the .bmp as 24-bit, then anything black is removed when you import it into Worms. If you encode it as 32-bit, then anything with an alpha value below 254 is removed. I couldn't really figure out how to do that, though, so I went the 24-bit route.

Basically, I took my original Illustrator file, put a black background behind it, made sure* the ponyscout's outlines were dark grey rather than black, then rezised it to some 2500 x something before exporting so as to avoid stretching. However, it resulted in the thinnest of white lines around some of the edges -- imperceptible when viewing the .bmp, but enough to create a little thin wall that grenades bounced off of, etc. I fixed that by taking the .bmp into Photoshop and cropping the edges a smidgen. Give yourself a tiny bit of breather space around the image to crop out in case that happens.

...Yeah, it was a lot more complicated than it should have been. :smallconfused: I can't really blame anyone if that sounds like too much to bother with. Send me a working Illustrator or Inkscape file, though, and I can do it myself.

*This is a lie. It just worked out that way. Convenient!

As I've said before, I'm convinced Tarbrush was skipping all the time because that side simply ran out of weapons! The limits were OK when you had 4 teams all shooting at each other from close range, but I think they need upping slightly when you have two teams with a wide gap between them.

The Linker
2011-04-03, 03:49 AM
The problem is, they have enough weapons -- they just don't seem to use them, after a certain point. There's no way Tarbrush didn't have at least one bazooka, or grenade, or holy hand grenade, or homing missile, or banana bomb... this game wasn't very long. I know he had something. It's beyond me why these guys give up after a certain point.

Remember that 'Worms start with no weapons, have to collect from crates' game mode? Yeeeeah, that doesn't work. I can barely get these Worms to even go after crates, and when they do, they hardly use the weapons. There's a loooooot of skipping. :smalleek: I even turned the difficulty up to max. It's like they decide at the beginning of their turn what they want to use (based on where they are), and then check if they have it. "I could totally use a grenade here! What? I don't have one? What's this Holy Hand something doing here? Screw this, I'm crawling into a corner."

Edit: Additionally, the amount of crates that are dropped on the highest setting is puny. Maybe 66% of the time, one crate drops. The rest of the time nothing drops. I was expecting a lot more, since the 'Crazy Crates' scenario that comes with the game has three crates dropping per turn. That would have been great.

Ah, well. There's other scenarios.

(saw no real reason this should be under spoiler.)

While probably true in a human match, at least in that it gives that single worm much greater efficiency and a chance to even the numbers by (ab)using the turn order to pick on worms that won't be shooting back for a while.. in this Blood Bowl, it just gives that worm more turns to skip and/or kill himself.
