STOP: HAMMERTIME

so lets talk about bludgeoning weapons. can you think of a moment more awesome than bashing a goblin's brains in? no? i didnt think so.

i am torn between my favorite two bludgeoning weapons. i normally go for the good ol' fashioned warhammer (what can i say, i like the style?), but i also like throwing down the weapons and punching someone in the face.

what is your favorite bludgeoning weapon?

The God Hammer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149336). 1d6, 19-20/x2, exotic. Why did I select it you ask? Because it's a giant d20 you beat someone down with! It's also homebrew, so it may not count.

For real WotC material, the Greathorn Minotaur Greathammer takes the cake. :smallcool: MMIV version, natch (1d12, 19-20/x4? Sure, why not!). An exotic weapon worth the cost, just because of the absurd critical range it's got.

If that one's off the table (and it frequently is), then Imma roll with... the Lucerne Hammer (Dragon Compendium/Arms and Equipment Guide) for the reach and power of a 2d4, 20/x4 weapon or the Vulcanian Thunder Club (Dragon Compendium) cause it's AWESOME.

DMG, it has a decent weight to it, and it can function as a thrown weapon also... after that a good old heavy mace does the job.

Morningstar. Fighting something that is immune to bludgeoning damage? That's okay, it does piercing damage too.

Unless you're counting the morning star (which is not a true bludgeoning weapon in my opinion, what with all the spikes and bludgeoning/piercing), give me a good ole' warhammer any day, either as represented in the PHB or in reality...

Heavy Flail and Quarterstaff. Both for style, not for actual mechanical advantages (although the staff can be made to work well using Tome of Battle).

for true bludgeoning weapons (so excluding morningstars) which has the best mechanical advantage?

Good old fashioned Warhammer, just big enough to go two-handed with it. Stick it on a Dwarf and Power Attack.

If I'm feeling exotic then Dire Flail because it's just so silly, or the Nunchaku because... hey, it's freaking nunchucks.

I'm playing an actual Greathorn Minotaur IRL using that weapon. It's... awesome. The character's catchphrase?

"These," *grabs horns* "aren't the horn."http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2010-12-09-CaptainHammer.jpg
"The horn is my penis."

No doubt. Take the Improved Trip and Improved Disarm lines of feats for extra fun.

Favorite in DnD? Probably the quarterstaff. Anyone can use it, and for a simple weapon, it does decent damage. Also, I feel awesome when I can use the weapons that my PCs use.

Favorite IRL? the Sai. They are horribly done in the PHB, and I have yet to see a fix that does fixes it well. You can catch any weapon with a sai if you know what your doing, and not only disarm it with a pull, but with a blade, often you can break it. I have actually seen my former sensei break a sword blade with his sai.

The Orc Shotput and Barbed Chain are fun, both of which are exotic.

Imagine the first made of glassteel with a skull inside it, kind of like the bowler from Mystery Men. Then "dribble" it with the Kinetic Boomerang power.

* The first takes 2 hands to throw, and deals 2d6 with 19-20/x3.

* The latter deals (2d6 x2 bludgeoning and peircing) as a one handed weapon.

However, both are 3.0, coming from Arms and Equipment Guide, and Savage Species respectively, and may be altered by errata.

I don't recall which book either, or the name, but I remember which one you are talking about. It was sort of an AoE weapon and the description talks about how it's meant to break up formations.

The Meteor Hammer.

For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a historical Chinese weapon; essentially a 10' chain with a metal ball at one or both ends.

As far as I know there is none in WotC material, but Pathfinder has one in the Adventurer's Armory. That actually is a little uber, and of course it's Exotic. It's a Heavy Flail and a Spiked Chain rolled into one: damage/threat like a Heavy Flail and other properties (reach, trip, disarm) like a Spiked Chain. Oh and you get a +1 Shield AC in this mode.
As written, you can also use it without reach as a double weapon, so add a Dire Flail into the equation. But I never use that.

If a DM won't allow that, I just ask for a Meteor Hammer in the form of a Spiked Chain that does B instead of P damage. The properties are the important part; who cares if the damage die is an average 5 or 5,5.

The Meteor Hammer.

As far as I know there is none in WotC materialOne of the dragon magazines has the meteor hammer and it's piercing cousin, the whip-dagger.

They've both got 15' reach with the ability to hit near.

Holy Bejeezus, 15'? Happen to know what issue it was in?

nvm, I found it. #319.

Like Spike Chain, except only 1d4 damage (sic) and up to 15' reach; available in Piercing (Rope Dart) or Bludgeoning (Meteor Hammer) varieties.

Sword & Fist, iirc, had the Orcish Shotput, which basically seems to be a metal slug that for some reason can be thrown for heavy flail damage, or similar. Bludgeoning, of course. There's not even any mention of a catapult or anything.

Or, failing that, the maul. My sword-swinging paladin has a Large maul just because I want a hammer.

It's a tossup between the maul and the heavy flail.

The greathorn minotaur greathammer is also awesome, but due to it looking a lot like the weaker goliath greathammer, it's kind of less likely to fly depending on the DM.

I am partial to re-fluffing the Greatclub into a Warstaff (from the Diablo 2 Diablerie) for much better mental image of the same stats
